This is my second time ate at Tokyo Shokudo. I ordered the 12 pieces sushi dinner plate. The fish they used were not fresh and kinda fishy. The avocado was still raw and hard in the California rolls. So, it wasn't a good dinner overall this time. It wasn't tasty and they're kinda expensive for what you got. I like the chicken Bento box I ordered on my first visit. I should order the Bento box instead, but sushi is supposed what they're specialized for and the owner recommended... I wish they have more cooked Japanese dinner selections on their menu. read more

Decided to hop over to a small little sushi place off Peachtree Industrial Blvd. Actually, I just popped in to grab a menu and everything smelled so good that I decided to stay for a bite. The fish was super fresh, and everything I had was carefully crafted and prepared. Prices are reasonable and the server was very friendly. Duluth sushi lovers will fall in love with Tokyo Shokudo, a small family run Japanese restaurant right in the heart of Duluth. The local Japanese community are frequent supporters as well, from what I can observe. Do not judge this place on the exterior or location. Once you walk in you will be amazed at how nice it is. There are less than 10 tables inside, but there are more spots to sit at the bar. This can make a nice place for a date as it was pretty quiet and can be intimate if you get the table in the corner. The service was great and the food came out very fast. Sushi is serious business at Tokyo Shokudo. For rolls, we had the Spicy Salmon, Spicy Tuna, and Volcano. The rolls were so fresh and had the right hint of all the flavors needed for a roll to come together. I melted with every bite. FRESH, flavorful, beautiful and OMG I want another one of those rolls. So darn good. The miso soup was extremely good...on point! It had great flavors! This is not your typical miso soup. The edamame was free. Overall, I loved this place and I will definitely come back! The food is fresh and sushi is outstanding, their rolls are the best in the area but depending on your own tastes you will decide to try others, but know it will be fresh. The service is outstanding and the people that work here know what people like and will recommend it to you. You will not be disappointed and you should try this place out. Looking for a Great sushi bar with fresh fish, Asahi on tap, and OTP on Gwinnett county? Well this is the place you have been looking for. Located in a not so known plaza (however one plaza away from some great Korean restaurants like Harue), Tokyo Shokudo is a tiny little hole in the wall that serves excellent sushi. There is nothing really to go wrong with ordering here, but if you're strapped for recommendations any of the Bento Boxes or Sushi over rice (recommend Unagi) is a good choice. They are open for lunch and closed after, opening again in the evening. It is a quaint and quiet little place with JPOP in the background and limited staff to attend to the small amount of tables. If you are ordering individual sushi pieces, you owe it to yourself to try the fatty sushi pieces (price is depending on Market). All in all, if you are looking for a good sushi bar in Duluth area this is a pretty good location. read more

This is the go-to place in the area for authentic Japanese food. The couple that operates this restaurant are originally from Japan and I can say with certainty that they get things right! It's just the two of them, so it's not the fastest dining experience, but their food is excellent, the tea is perfect, and they are very hospitable. I spent two years in Japan and as a result I became a bit of a Japanese food snob. I can usually tell when the cooks don't natively understand how Japanese food should taste, and it leave me disappointed. That's never the case here, and I'll keep coming back. read more

Came here alone on a Monday evening as I've been trying many new Japanese restaurants around my area I haven't been to. I honestly would have never known about this place if I never searched up "Japanese restaurants near me" into a google search. It just goes to show how much of a hidden gem this place is. It's located in a small strip right next to a Jimmy John's and it's easily missed as the sign and restaurant are both very small. As soon as I walked in, the waitress and chef both instantly greeted me and it honestly felt like I had just walked into their home with the warm vibe they and their restaurant gave off. The waitress was very sweet and attentive, seating me very quickly and letting me know all the menu combinations available. I was very hungry so I skipped straight to their dinner options with the bento boxes standing out the most. I ended up going with a grilled salmon bento box which included rice, a salad, miso soup, sashimi, assorted tempura, and 3 pieces of sushi all for $22! The wait time for my food was small, granted I was the only one inside at the moment, but the waitress always made sure to deliver my food as quickly as possible whenever the bell rang. I honestly can't stress how nice the service here was, I have never had a waitress be so sweet and attentive before and the chef was always eager to hear my opinion of the meal. The tempura was all very good, with the shrimp tempura being one of the best I've had. The grilled salmon was the highlight of my meal as the texture was still nice and soft. I've had it at other places where it's sometimes a little too crunchy and leaves a small burnt aftertaste. I just wish it was bigger portion since it only comes as one small piece but I guess that's fine considering all the other food that was included. The sushi was good too, it wasn't anything out of this world but I still enjoyed every bite nonetheless. I'm really glad I came here as I've never experienced this type of warm home vibe the restaurant gave me. The service was impeccable and only complimented the delicious meal I enjoyed here. Wow. My taste buds were so pleased leaving this authentic and delicious Japanese spot! If you're looking for fresh, melt-in-your mouth sashimi, this is a place for you. The fatty tuna (toro) was OUTSTANDING, almost like cotton candy. All the sashimi we ordered tasted so fresh and juicy, not too fishy at all. This is hands-down the most authentic place we've been to. The variety of rolls is a bit small, however, you can tell that their main focus as a Japanese restaurant is the authenticity. You won't find much fried or Americanized food here. Tokyo SHOKUDO is a hidden Japanese gem in Duluth that can satisfy your craves. This is one of the very few authentic place that know what they're doing. Owned by husband and wife, but their quality is top notch. Often had Japanese chefs and natives came in for food. If that doesn't tell you, I don't know what. The fried dishes are super good: Chicken Karaage is my fav. Also, all the a-la-cart sushi is mouth watering. Splurged ourselves with the Toro....omg, i'm craving as I'm writing this review. Recently tried a bit of my friend's curry katsu don last night - they made it as a special request and I am super grateful for Tomoko-san for the extra effort. The katsu kare was amazingly delicious and the closest thing that I have found to what I ate in Japan 6-7 years ago. We got here around 8:50PM on a Tuesday night. A friend mentioned it in passing saying it was solid sushi for a decent price and my friend and I happened to be in the neighborhood. Upon arrival, there were 2 other tables eating and we were told that there was no more sushi rice. If we wanted any rolls or nigiri, we might have to wait. Whatttt. Ok. We ordered salmon, tamago, sweet shrimp, uni, and toro (all nigiri), a spicy scallop roll, and assorted tempura. Everything was really good. Tempura was nice and crispy and hot/warm upon arrival to our table. They gave us each our own sauce to dip in (thankyouuuu). Sushi tasted decently fresh and the uni was so unexpectedly good that we got another order for the each of us. Toro was just ok. Meh. Sweet shrimp was also on point. They give you the shrimp head tempura battered and fried (no extra charge, I know some places do that). Service was excellent and they did not rush us at all to leave. Definitely will return and definitely will recommend to others. I'm a little bit reluctant to recommend to my friends only because I don't want it to get super busy (jk) but of course I will. Only reason to give a 3 star is the service. It's very slooooow! There's only 1 lady who does all the serving, cleaning tables, seating, and ordering. She gets really busy. We had a toddler with us who has very little patience. Took a long time for the food to arrive. I never got the fork I asked for. We wanted to order more food but decided not to because it was taking forever. Food was decent. Ramen is better at Umaido for sure. Sashimi tasted good. Actually, I really don't know how to describe my night here. One word for everything... HORRIBLE! I've tried better rolls at other sushi restaurants.. this is by far the worst I've ever tasted! I was really bummed, too, because all the reviews I read for this place really impressed me! I guess people don't know the real taste of sashimi (raw fish) and sushi. This place made me really really mad!! First of all, my parents had ordered the Sakura (sashimi section of the menu $30.00). Our waitress, Demi didn't even mention the "special sashimi" until after we got our meals which was just horrible. The fish tasted horrible.. it had a very fishy taste and fresh sashimi isn't suppose to taste like that. It's suppose to taste like clean, ocean taste and very refreshing. But the sashimi was a BIG disappointment!! We told Demi that not only the sashimi had a fishy taste but also the Spider Roll that my siblings had ordered. I tried one roll and I felt like I was going to puke (YES! It was THAT BAD!!)!! And then, my Ikura (Salmon Roe) nigiri sushi (2 pieces : $4.50 each) and Tuna nigiri sushi came out. They tasted ok.. much better tasting than my parents' sashimi. I really thought that that wasn't fair of the Sushi Chef to use different sashimi meat. He should've used the same fresh sashimi for our other orders as well. This was not right. But the Takoyaki (appetizer: Octopus Balls which is basically tiny pieces of octopus in a batter that they deep fry in a circular frying baking dish and it comes out looking like small balls.) tasted much tastier than the other food we ordered. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, because the sashimi, sushi and rolls... ICK!! All of them tasted bad.. had a very bad fishy taste! read more

I have said this before in one of my earlier reviews of a Japanese restaurant - I have never been to Japanese restaurants before I met my partner! He introduced me to Japanese cuisine and first one was 'Blue fin Sushi' in Duluth and Tokyo Shokudo was the second. And no wonder I have taken to Japanese food like fish takes water. We have been to Tokyo Shokudo for both lunch and dinner many times. My first time was for their lunch and till this day I keep going back for it. I have written reviews for number of Japanese restaurants, but I am not quite sure why I haven't written a review for this gem so far. Especially given that I have 15 check-ins over last year & half and I have been going there even before I was on yelp. Nevertheless, this review is long over due and lets get to it. Tokyo shokudo is a small sushi restaurant in a shopping complex next to Bank of America. There is always plenty places to park and the restaurant is never overly busy(I am surprised about his, given the quality of food here). They have about 7 or 8 tables and some chairs at the sushi bar. The decor is decidedly simple but in a tasteful way. There is always one sushi chef who prepares your sushi order, only one waitress to bring food to the table and one cook inside the kitchen for hot food orders. Just three to run the restaurant and their is a simplicity to it. Oh and if you ever go in the evenings, you might see a kid watching shows in iPad or doing homework - if you are regular, you probably know what I am talking about. :) As for the food, they have hot, cold and sushi appetizers, tempura options, sushi-sashimi options, bento box and hot food options. They also have special low priced lunch menu served between 11 am to 2.30 pm. I highly recommend their BENTO BOX options for LUNCH. It's only about $10 for pick 2 and $12 for pick three - options includes 4 piece nigiri sushi, sashimi, grilled salmon, chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, tempura(2 pieces shrimp and 4 pieces vegetables) and gyoza. My usual picks, as waitress remembers it every time, are nigiri sushi, tempura and Salmon(or sashimi). The bento box lunch comes with potato salad, complimentary salad and bowl of miso soup. GET THIS!! Other than that, they also have ramen, tempura udon, grilled fishes, fried rice and oh many number of rolls. While the ramen is not as good as Umaidos, their udon is definitely up to the par. And we always order TAKO YAKI, when we go here for dinner - try this you will definitely fall in love with this place. But be careful, those balls are usually served right out of fryer and it can really hot. GET THIS! I have also tried their chef choice dinner and also few rolls on their menu. I like their dynamite and rainbow roll. Nothing fancy like 'Flying roll' rolls but it's still pretty good. Above all, their service is always the best. Always ever polite and sushi chef always watching you from counter to gauge how much you liked his creation. Overall, I love this quiet little restaurant and I would dine here anytime in a heartbeat! I think I am in love ::heart eyes::. The fact that I live so close to this place is dangerous! I wanted a healthyish light dinner before hitting the gym with some protein and carbs so Ricky and I checked this place out. We got the sashimi appetizer and omg! The quality and portion from grandpa sushi chef were delicious, fresh, and generous! We are talking like an inch thick slice! I was kind of sad I got 3 rolls (should have just gotten hamachi and sashimi) but hamachi was not in my macros left and I was scared to only to eat sashimi before hitting the gym.....But there sashimi is sooooo gooooddddd! I cant wait to go back this weekend when we have time. But due to needing to get some carbs in be4 the gym we got 3 rolls to "split between us" aka, ricky ate most of it. We got a shrimp tempura/eel/cream cheese roll, the fatty tuna one, and salmon skin (ricky weakness besides fish cheeks). They were all delicious! totally felt like a white person ordering these type of rolls but whatever! it was delicious! Rolled perfect, fast, fresh, etc. Great preworkout food. The customer service also is great! I felt very welcomed, a family feel, and nice and quiet with easy parking. Wow, surprisingly good sushi in a very inconspicuous hole-in the wall next to a hookah joint. Who knew! I had the tuna tataki and yellowtail jalepeno as appetizers. While the tuna was good, the yellowtail was succulently excellent. Service was attentive; there's only 1 server as far as I can see. It's a very small place with about 12 table--top, so the food will come out a bit slow. I understand that so I'm not going to dock a star for it. The rolls are smaller than what I am used to but the quality is very good. I was with my nephew and sister and had mostly cooked rolls. The Rock-n-Roll, Spider, and Spicy Tuna were good but I wish they were a bit bigger. I will definitely try out the sashimi next time since the quality of raw meats seemed fresh from the appetizers. read more

People who work here are so nice, I really tried to like this place, but their food has hits and misses. Their sushi... As much as other Yelpers say their sushi is fresh and delicious, mine wasn't. I ordered a combo sushi that has nigiris and makis. Their raw fish was dry, stale, chewy, and not shiny. Their makis weren't properly rolled, and they fell apart at the seams of nori when I poked on them with chopsticks. If I had sushi like these, I wouldn't order anymore for more disappointments. Their general food... Their miso soup and salad with ginger dressing are good and refreshing. Ginger pork was good... It's a hit, But katsu curry don was a miss. Curry sauce even didn't have any meat chunks or veggies in it, and it was poured over the chewy flat katsu as if curry sauce came out from a pre-made pouch. Sorry, this is not a substantial nor satisfactory katsu curry in my book. Some Yelper mentioned that the kitchen food comes after the sushi if you order a combo, so maybe they are short on cooking staff. Ambient: it's a small joint and set up like a Japanese dinner or so, so it's not a spacious, relaxing, and enjoyable ambient. I can't relax sitting at the seat right by the hallway where people constantly walk back and forth for the bathrooms and waitress pass by from the kitchen to drop off food. But it's probably good for people who want a quick lunch and go. I don't think they have wi-fi. Service: Again, people who work here are so nice. It can be worth a try or explorer their new dishes I haven't discovered. But generally, I become a regular of restaurants who can serve all great dishes at any given time. Upgraded to 5 stars. This is officially my favorite sushi place in the area. We got most of the same rolls as last time, with one exception -- we swapped the spicy scallop for the spicy tuna. We also got a side of spicy mayo and an order of vegetable tempura. The rolls were just as good as last time, if not better. The spicy tuna roll wasn't nearly as spicy as the spicy scallop roll, but it went really well with the spicy mayo we had on the side. The vegetable tempura was amazing. My sister and I were in the area today and needed a sushi fix. Yelp pointed us in the direction of Tokyo Shokudo. We were the only ones there for most of our visit, so the service wasn't as slow as other people have pointed out. I had a small sashimi plate and a piece of toro nigiri, and my sister had a couple of rolls and some toro as well. I tried a piece of the spider roll and it was fantastic. The toro was a generous portion and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The sashimi had huge pieces of yellowtail, tuna, and salmon. The wasabi was not the spiciest I've had, but the ginger was. I went on a Saturday night and there was only 1 sushi chef and 1 waitress working entire restaurant. Needless to say, the service was slower than what I'm used to, hence the 1 point deduction. However, the quality and freshness of sushi is very good and the nigri portions are larger than other sushi restaurants so this this place deserves nothing short of 4 stars. p.s. - For large groups, prepare to wait for your entrees!
