Our second was ok, the food was slow to come and the sushi was lacking...I've had better at Publix. Thinking that it could of been a bad day for them, we tried it a third time. The Spam was ok, not bad, just ok. We were two of the four customers in the entire place and the service was slooooow. My noodle were a bit greasy but tasty, the gyoza was well fried to perfection. A small and cozy Japanese restaurant. Not many tables, especially for a big party, it's very difficult. We came here for a friend's birthday and had to split up because they didn't have a table large enough to fit all of us together. I had their spam Masubi (2 pices which were cut into 4 smaller pieces). It's basically spam grilled in pan on top of rice then wrapped with dried seaweed. Delicious but I still like Waikikie's better. Broth from Udon was bit salty but had lot of toppings like veggies, imitation crab meats, and fish Tofu. I had the Udon and 2 rolls combo for $19.99. An excellent deal. Restaurant was really busy with 2 servers running around. They were very nice. Food, however was bit slow. Overall, I was quiet impressed by the food and if we didn't have to wait really long for the food, I could have given them 5 stars. I've been to Flying Roll dozens of times but never wrote a review so here it is. Flying Roll is a tiny little restaurant on Peachtree Industrial. Parking is kind of limited since the lot is shared with everything else around it. My friend and I ordered 2 Spicy Salmon Hand Roll ($4 each) Shrimp Tempura Roll ($6) Chicken Fried Rice ($9) .. my prices are approx from what I remember. The Spicy Salmon hand roll was delicious. Very simple, very fresh. Same goes for the Shrimp Tempura Roll. The avocado was very ripe which is always a plus. Ripe avocados are the best. Lastly the Chicken Fried Rice... Would've given them 5 stars if it wasn't for this. Their fried rice is premade. So they only cooked the chicken and put it on top. It didn't lack flavor, but the rice itself wasn't very hot. It was just warm. It was also really greasy from all the butter they used to make it. So after you scoop some up to share you can see the grease on the plate beaming on you. Service is great. Well, what do you know, number of decent sushi places in Duluth area has been going up in last few years. While I live in Atlanta, my partner lives in Duluth area and we stay at either location back and forth. And yesterday when I opened up my yelp to see what's new around, this sushi place with near perfect reviews came up! We aren't going to pass that up. And this joins the ranks of Blue Fin, Tokyo Shokudo and less popular Osaka, as my favorite Japanese places in and around Duluth. Flying Roll is in the strip mall right next to the one that has Udipi(favorite South Indian vegetarian restaurant). The restaurant itself is right next to the laundromat, that has been around for so many years at this location. When we entered the restaurant, two C word popped up in my mind - Colorful and Cozy! It's not a big restaurant but tastefully furnished by all means. The booths has specials written on each side, above the back support, so everyone can read it. I thought it was clever. And each booth has see through screen hanging down, giving a semi-private feeling. There are lot of bar stools at the counter near sushi master but these are more for drinks than for sushi bar because between seated customers and the sushi master there is big wall of beer and sake bottles; there is no way a sushi master is going to be able to deliver sushi over it. They had a big menu, with usual suspects like fried appetizers and sushi appetizers, yakitori dishes and ala carte sushi and sashimi, sushi/sahimi combos and rolls, lots of rolls. We ordered the following, 1) Miso soup 2) Handrolls - one each of Tuna and salmon 3) Somewhere over the 'Rainbow' roll. 4) Sushi Deluxe platter 5) Fried oreo cookies and bananaa roll 6) Fuji volcano roll Miso soup was like nothing I have tasted before anywhere else and I say that as a compliment. It had fried onions and mushroom in it and I think these addition brought in more flavor and taste to already flavorful miso. Handrolls were good but not the best we have ever had(best was at Sushi house Hayakawa). We liked spicy tuna handrolls better than salmon one. But I think it would depend on the individual. The Nori was quiet chewy than we are used to from other places. Somewhere over rainbow was just the rainbow roll with fancy name. At just $8.99(and they had yelp check-in offer of 30% off of a signature roll) it was cheaper and delicious. It has crab in the middle and pieces of tuna, salmon and eel on top. We liked it overall. Sushi Deluxe came with 12 pieces of nigiri sushi and 8 pieces of california roll and spicy tuna roll each. We were impressed by how delicious both spicy tuna roll and california roll was. At most restaurants, rolls accompanying sushi deluxe is treated as second class citizens compared to the nigiri sushi, which will be the star. Here it was kind of other way around - while we were so impressed with the rolls and liked the quality of fishes on nigiri sushi(except for tuna, which was tougher than tuna I have tasted in any sushi place), the suhsi was falling apart so easily. The rice with wasabi part would break from sushi before it could reach our mouth. It was bit annoying. MUST TRY - in our recent visits we have come to appreciate Fuji volcano roll - basically California roll served with cooked small scallops and cheese based gravy on top. It was savory, nice and absolutely tasty. And they don't skimp on the small scallops either. We order this every. Single. Time. I highly recommend this for sushi roll beginners and veterans. Not authentic by any means, but tasty as hell. In fried oreo cookies and banana roll, everything was batter fried. We loved the oreo cookies but it was a stretch to call it a roll. It was just fried banana and oreo cookies arranged in order. Service at the Flying roll was very good - we found our waitress very attentive, engaging and extremely friendly. Overall, I think this is a more of a maki roll place than a nigiri sushi or sashimi place. If you keep that expectation right, you will love this place. We will be going back for more rolls. NOTE: since my first visit, I have visited this place at least thirty more times with my partner. I have added and recommended Fuji volcano roll to my review since then. I still stand by my 4 star review because of their nigiri sushi - all that I have said about it is still true. But I would say this, flying roll is still the best maki roll place I have ever been to. I'm completely addicted to the sushi at Flying Roll. I would eat here 5 nights a week if I could afford to and mercury poisoning wasn't a concern. It's the best sushi I've ever tasted; bar none. I would have reviewed this place sooner, but I wanted to think about how to word it. I'm sure tastes and experiences will and do vary, but you're doing yourself a serious disservice if you like sushi and don't try this place. Now for some details. I definitely lean toward American-style sushi so I'm not as well-versed with nigiri or sashimi, but if you like rolls, I defy you to be disappointed. The menu is huge and in addition to plenty of traditional rolls, they have a plethora of specialty rolls that are actually unique; not to mention anywhere from 4 to 8 featured rolls that aren't on the menu. They're just written on chalkboards around the small restaurant. It's the true differentiation and inclusion of so many unexpected ingredients that sets the tone, but ingredients can't just be thrown together and expected to work. The rolls are an amalgam of delicious weirdness. Example: my favorite roll is the tropical eel: BBQ eel, cucumber, spicy mayo, and mango sauce. It's crunchy, sweet perfection. Speaking of which, if you like eel, you're in luck because the menu is a little eel heavy. They know how to prepare it too - clean cuts, no bones, captured flavor. They take their time with the rolls. The wait is a little longer than the average sushi place and it's been worth it every time. The prices are above average too in my estimation. This is no discount sushi, but I've paid more for lousy sushi. Here, I feel like it's worth every penny and more. The ambiance is fun too. It's definitely intimate - not more than 10 or 15 tables. The decor and design is reminiscent of Japan, but somehow this feels more authentic than the generic pan-Asian decor in most sushi places. They even have Japanese game shows on TV. Don't ask. I have no clue what I'm watching. The staff is very nice. We get complementary soup every time and they remember us there, but don't push us or expect us to order the same thing. In truth, I have favorite items, but I order something different every time and I'm always rewarded! We've taken friends there and I'll drive way out of the way for a dinner at Flying Roll whenever I can. I want to write more because I am so taken with this food, but I need to get over there for some sushi. Just kidding. It's the middle of the night and I don't think they're open... are they? "Not if you open a sushi bar. All you need is some raw fish and a knife." -- Firstborn (1984) What a fun experience - and well executed. I was worried when we were descending upon this small sushi shop on a Saturday evening with 15 yelpers in tow, but the staff handled us like pros. Normally, I would not have opted in to such an event (allergic to most seafood), but when I looked at the menu and the photos on Yelp, I saw they had other non-seafood items that I could enjoy. Woo Hoo! When I showed up, they had already set aside tables for our group (Jang C. had called in a reservation for us) and they were well prepared. I looked over the menu and was excited by a few different appetizers, but knew I wanted to get the steak teriyaki, so I landed on just getting the tempura to start. Wow, they really provide a lot of food. So to start, I ordered the Tempura appetizer. This comes with some veggies and 3 shrimp - you can get all shrimp if you want to pay extra. Personally, I wanted the veggies as well. It came with a large onion ring, a large bias slice of zucchini and a large wedge of acorn squash - all crispy on the outside (super light tempura batter) and still with a bite on the inside. There was a small ramekin of teriyaki sauce on the side for dipping. The shrimp were like sticks - long and lanky, and totally delicious. Not at all over cooked. Next up, my steak teriyaki. A huge portion of meat, cooked perfectly (not well done) and an equal portion of veggies - carrots, broccoli, onions, zucchini - also cooked perfectly. Not mushy at all. They were topped with black and white sesame seeds and served in a very hot iron plate with a wood base. I didn't realize how hot it was at first and burned my finger - oops. I should listen more closely. The entree came with a small ginger salad to start (typical) that was good - iceberg lettuce and ginger dressing and fried rice (I think I paid a small up charge for fried instead of steamed). Everything was really flavorful and I enjoyed it thoroughly - I ate all of the meat, most of the veggies and maybe 1/3 of the rice? I was so full by the end that I could not eat another bite. Overall, it was quote the bargain for as much food as I was served. I would definitely come here again. Service never lacked for the table - my water glass was constantly being refilled and the food all came out hot (for me - mostly everyone else had sushi rolls). Reading the menu, it seemed like every sushi roll they had was another version of a California roll. I thought about leaving until the owner showed me the "Flying Roll Free Style" menu. Both were good on water refills and remembering who ordered what, as the food came out staggered; depending on who ordered first. She also remembered our seating arrangement and as we paid by card for the check. As she called out our first names, while passing the guest book to the correct person. Nice. [Food Highlights]: Spam Musubi - ($3.99) Two thick slices of spam atop a bed of quite a bit of rice, then wrapped with seaweed. Though the salmon portions were good, it didn't taste fresh. More frozen and just thawed. I didn't taste the buttery, tender cuts that other higher quality sushi places offer such as Sushi Mito. [Total Bill w/ Tip & Tax]: Even with our large party, the server did not charge us a mandatory gratuity fee. Before tip, my total came out to $27 with tax. {Summary}: As for food quality goes, I think Sushi Mito would be a better choice. This is absolutely the cutest sushi restaurant I've ever been in.. And I've had my share of sushi! As soon as you walk in, the vibe is completely homey and quaint. They did a great job of utilizing their space by giving an intimate setting yet homey enough to bring the whole family. Tonight is New Year's Eve so we decided to just do a pick up order with the family. Calling in, the server/hostess was extremely quick and knew the menu of the top of their head and that made me feel confident in picking up food. There were 3 of them working (2 chefs and 1 server) so it wasn't quick quick but I think it was the quickest server they could've done with that many workers and customers. My husband and I really enjoyed watching the chefs preparing the food from the sushi bar area. You can tell their skills are excellent and it made me feel comfortable to try their food knowing how precise they were. (Hiro dreams of Sushi.. The documentary I totally recommend) I think it's the perfect place to go on a first date where you can spend the evening just enjoying food in a cute place. A friend and I made the lunchtime trek from Alpharetta based on the Yelp reviews alone. The restaurant is fairly small - I'd guess less than 20 tables - but service was prompt and friendly, even with only two waitresses working. There were a steady stream of patrons in and out during our visit. We split two appetizers (edamame and the Flying Tower) and two rolls (Oh My Flying Roll and Tropical Eel) between two people, and there was more than enough food to go around. APPETIZERS Edamame ($3.99): you guessed it, steamed and salted edamame served with soy sauce. Standard but always good, and portion size was more than enough for two people. Flying Tower ($10.99): chunk tuna, sesame oil, crab meat, avocado, sushi rice, creamy wasabi sauce, hot sauce, eel sauce, green onion, red tobiko. This one is absolutely recommended. The sushi rice here is perfect - cooked with rice vinegar or some other sweetner, and it's perfectly sticky. This app is something I'd order again and again. SUSHI ROLLS Oh My Flying Roll ($13.49): tempura shrimp and avocado topped with crab, tuna, salmon, tilapia, avocado, citrus soy sauce and hot sauce. Essentially a rainbow roll with battered and fried shrimp inside. Fairly standard but the crunchy consistency paired well with the flavors. Tropical Eel ($8.99): BBQ eel, cucumber, crab meat, spicy mayo, eel sauce, mango sauce. To be perfectly honest, I'm completely biased here because eel / unagi is my favorite kind of sushi, but this roll was fantastic. The eel is cooked (broiled, perhaps) in addition to being coated in a sweet BBQ sauce, which heightens the flavor that much more. The cucumber is also a nice addition because while it doesn't change the flavor greatly, it helps lend some more meatiness to the dish. Four stars; we'll be back! read more

Thank goodness, because after eating myself full I can drive back 10 minutes and contently drift into my food coma. The inside decor is very cute, slightly quirky, but not noisy and cluttered. Pay attention to the little chalkboards above each booth seat, I think there's specialty rolls on there that aren't on the menu. The little booths itself have adorable drapes that make your table seem a little private. Other than that, it's a small restaurant that's more long than it is wide, so it might be a little difficult to see your waitress unless you stick your head out of your little booth. On to the food! Super good. They have cutesy names for their rolls as well such as: Pink Lady, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, etc. The prices aren't overly expensive, but they aren't dirt cheap either. I'd consider them reasonable, and after seeing the quality of the ingredients, I'd say its well worth it. There was only one server when I went, and I've been a few times. I recognize her at this point, and I almost think she's the only server. She's very sweet and kind, though since shes often the only server, it can be hard to flag her down when she's busy in the kitchen, taking orders, refilling drinks, etc. That's the only downfall, but the charm of the place and its personality is enough to pull this up to 5 stars. read more

I know it not fresh catch lol. When I start with the sashimi salmon it was good, then I try the sashimi white fish omg!! it was so fishy that i had to spit out in a napkin. I know white fish can be a little fishy but this was horrible fishingness!!! the taste was lingering in my mouth the whole day. Volcano Roll was DRENCHED in spicy mayo, DEFINITELY wayy too unauthentic. Spider roll is mediocre. Sashimi was overpriced 2 pieces of salmon sashimi for $5... and it was not that good. Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more
