I truly love this place. It was my first restaurant hot pot and I loved having the option of both hot pot and Korean bbq. The ambiance is really nice and elevated, and my servers have been great every time!! I shy away from the drinks at the bar, my first time I really didn't like mine because they were so syrup tasting. Plenty of options, although I wish they had more broths that were not pork based. However the reason why the rating is a 3/5 is due to the food. The choices were broad and some food are vegan friendly. But for the beef (both brisket and premium) and vegetables (lettuce) had black spots on it. I googled it and for the meat, its due to micro-organisms and the vegetables were due to mold. The hot pot at Gom is more akin to Chinese or Taiwanese hot pot (like Mini Hot Pot) rather than authentic shabu-shabu. Traditional shabu-shabu includes ingredients such as chrysanthemum leaves, seaweed, carrots, and shiitake and enokitake mushrooms. You won't find any of that here, so don't be misled. If you're not specifically seeking out shabu-shabu, however, Gom Shabu-Shabu is a solid hot pot restaurant. Nicely decorated in traditional Korean style with woods, curtains, and private booths, each diner gets his/her very own hot pot. The hot pots are built into the tables. This place even has a bar and each patron sitting at the bar gets his/her own hot pot. Large groups can reserve a private room in the back, which has a table that can seat up to 10. The ordering process is simple. You order one of 16 items off the main menu, generally consisting of meat and seafood, and then add any additional items off the side menu. The meat and seafood consists of beef, pork, lamb, fish cake, tripe, shrimp, mussels, and squid. You can order additional meat and seafood off the side menu as well as a variety of vegetables. Each order from the main menu comes with a plateful of veggies, egg, tofu, seaweed, fish cake, sausage, and a clump of noodles. The veggies include Napa cabbage, red cabbage, mini corn-on-the-cob, broccoli, bok choy, and pumpkin. Definitely shell out the extra dollar for the "premium" beef. I think the quality of all the meat and seafood is good and fresh. The beef and pork are thinly sliced and are tender and savory. Consider ordering an extra side of meat because the portions are not generous (though what hot pot place is?). What can really make the meal is the dipping sauce. The restaurant has two dipping sauce stations where you can make your own sauce. The servers can also help you make your sauce if you have no idea what you're doing. I recommend having the servers make it. You can request different levels of spiciness. I like my sauce with extra garlic, cilantro, and chili pepper. It's addictive. Since there are individual hot pots, each person cooks his/her own food. Just boil the ingredients you think are good and eat away. Everyone has different preferences. Some people like to cook certain ingredients (e.g. meat, noodles) longer than others. Some people like to crack their egg while others don't. It's all up to you. One of my only minor gripes with Gom Shabu-Shabu is their lack of wire ladles. Instead, they just give you regular soup spoons. This makes it difficult to scoop up some of the ingredients from inside the pot, especially noodles. Come on, Gom, even Mini Hot Pot has ladles. Service is typically very good. As with most Korean restaurants, there is a button at your table you can press whenever you need to call the server's attention. Gom Shabu-Shabu is located in a strip mall close to the Pleasant Hill-Satellite Blvd. intersection. It's the biggest business in the strip mall, so it's hard to miss. "Like it" Not a big fan of hot pot, but I think Gom Shabu Shabu is average. I didn't like that they only had one type of broth, veggie. It was hard to keep a consistent temperature on my burner. It was either too hot or luke warm. Selection of meats and items were pretty good. Utensils didn't bother me as much, but my wife stated she would have liked a strainer of some sort for the noodles. Service was good at first but as they got busy they didn't really care for us. No refill on broth. Refill on sauce and water whenever requested. I like this place because they make the broth with purple cabbage. The variety isn't too big but it's quite nice for a cold day! I get either the premium beef, fresh seafood and I also tried the lamb which I enjoy. They make the sauce for you which has a peanut sauce base to it. The workers can make you the best combination of various spiciness for your sauce. If you have a peanut allergy just let them know and they won't mix it in! The premium beef is cuts of sirloin! So it's definitely worth the $1-$2 extra! The cut is also a little thicker! The price is about $14-$18 for each type of hotpot. You can also add in extra things for few more dollars each. Always get the porridge at the end! They also give you as much bean sprouts as you want! They mix in a bowl of rice with the left over soup with an egg! It's so good if you get the seafood one! Thanks to this place, purple makes my mouth water. If you don't get it, you need to give this place a try! Gom Shabu Shabu has a special place in my heart. The warm purple broth, the mound of veggies and thinly shredded beef will always be my go to when I need to recover from a cold, or just warm up in general. Each person is given a stove and pot to cook however they wish, whatever they wish! There is also 2 sauce bars; guest bar for diy sauces, and employees if you trust them to make yours for you. I make my own because Im the best sauce maker. The sauce bar consists of cilantro, garlic, green onion, jalapeno, white peanut/sesame sauce, chili sauce, chili oil, ponzu, and other bottled sauces. In my honest opinion their white sauce is the best in the area. so good! For the meats you can order a variety of things, like beef, premium beef*, chicken, pork, lamb, and seafood. each protein comes with a mound of vegetables like napa cabbage, spinach, purple cabbage, corn, bok choi, broccoli, sweet pumpkin, sweet potato, along with a sausage, crab imitation, fish cakes, tofu, rice cakes, an egg, and rice noodles. Its alot, but no refills! They also bring a bowl of fresh bean sprouts for the table too. This is refillable. We always get the premium beef which is served frozen and shaved into little rolls. Broth: their broth is more flavorful than other places I've been to. 2. Portions: their portions are huge. They give you more than enough vegetables and stuff to leave you filling. I almost never finish all my food! 3. Privacy: although there's a table right next to you, there are shades or dividers that provide ample amount of privacy. I usually go to Mini Hot Pot but today I felt like trying something new. Gom Shabu Shabu is located on Satellite Blvd. pretty spacious inside compare from the look on the outside. I ordered the shrimp and beef ($1 extra for the premium beef). There were like 5 or 6 pieces of shrimp, plate of veggies (1 mushroom, korean cabbage, Bok Choy, corn, sausage, imitation crab stick, rice cake, clear noodle, and pumpkin slice. I ordered dumplings $1.99 for 3pcs) as a side and porridge. There is a bar for you to make sauces but if it's your first time, you can ask the server to make it for you. I chose mild sauce. Sauce includes lot of green onions, garlic and their special sauce. I added extra sirracha because it was too mild for me. I feel that broth is bit blend but as you cook the broth more, it becomes more flavorful. Best part of the hot pot is the porridge. Server will come and make a porridge with your left over broth. If prisoners could be trusted around hot water, I would recommend that prisoners be only fed shabu shabu and they would be too weak to cause problems. Did I say not enough food? I never write reviews but felt the need to share. This is our go to shabu spot for years, however, upon dining here tonight around 7:30pm, the service was subpar. The food was average, but what I always look forward to is the porridge at the end of my shabu meal. Around 8:15-8:30, we were told the kitchen is closing which is fine (even though it says they close at 10:30pm). But a few minutes later, they let a group of Korean customers sit in. So we thought we can try to order the porridge, given all they need is a bowl of rice and an egg. But our server told us they are out of rice. When you order, you get a plate of nappa, red cabbage, hotdog, tofu, dduk, fish cakes, noodles, egg, corn, mushrooms, bok choy, squash, broccoli, and other vegetables. Like everyone said, their premium beef is good. it's fresh and tastes good. You have to swish it around a few seconds in the hot broth to have it cooked to perfection. You shouldn't leave it in the broth too long or it will overcook. The broth seems like chicken broth. But I'm not sure about that. It has a nice taste. We just add some of the sauces from the sauce bar to kick it up a notch. The service was good. They didn't seem too friendly, but they were in a hurry and efficient. You ring the door bell to beckon the servers. And they seem fast to respond. You can choose to make the sauce yourself or have the employees make it. I chose to make it myself. Having seen some excellent reviews, we came as a party of 6 to celebrate a birthday- the place is very well set-up to accomodate parties of varying sizes (from 2 to 8) using roll-down dividers- pretty cool. But what about the food? It's pretty simple since you basically cook the food yourself, but the waiters allow you to pick what kind of dipping sauce you'd like to have. There is a "regular" and "spicy" sauce. The base is the same- lots of garlic and scallions, with the latter holding a bit of a kick. Pretty tasty concoctions, and for 1st timers, it'll be enough to satisfy your taste buds. (Note that each person will have their personal pot of broth in which to cook- not family style) Here's what we ordered : Beef/Pork/Lamb (choose one) +seafood combo ($16.99)- when I ordered this combo, I mistakenly thought that all three meats were included. Too bad. I picked the Lamb, which ended up being a pretty fatty cut of meat. Tasty, but shrunk like crazy. The seafood part of this combo included a mussel or two, some clams, squid, and shrimp. All pretty fresh. Seafood ($13.99)- in addition to the seafood mentioned above this choice provides some small crabs and a few other things I don't quite remember. Beef ($12.99)- pretty lean beef- which is easy to get hard if you overcook it. But not bad. "Premium" Beef ($13.99)- For an extra dollar, you get a LOT more fatty slices of meat, which is very very tasty. But same deal with the fatty lamb that I had- the amount of actual meat you consume decreases by a lot. I ended up getting an extra side order of this ($8 I think) because I wasn't getting full. All in all, this place is pretty good- but pricey. You stumble upon this hip little joint... and later roll yourself out of the building feeling like you have triplets. And they're probably bumpin' to some Korean pop music, no big deal. How it works: Each person at the table has a hot pot with a broth. With each plate you order (Premium beef, pork, seafood- tripe even) a dish of vegetables comes with. We're talking fresh veggies like cabbage, sweet potato, glass noodles, mushroom, fish cake, tofu...) While your pot is heating up, your waiter makes a sauce for you. If you can't take spicy food, just get mild- or even eat it without. You cook the food on your own- put it all in the pot! I love going here because I feel like I'm doing something wonderful for my body. It's that good. At the end of your meal you can ask for a porridge, which is the creamy rice that they prepare for you with the broth you've already cooked your meats and veggies in. Took the wifey for a date at this place, which I've passed by 100 times while going to...another restaurant. So we go into Gom after her experience with her GF. (See other reviews as to how to eat shabu shabu). I loved it for two reasons; 1. no MSG in the broth! They create the broth by boiling vegetables for hours (a/t to said wifey). 2. After eating everything, one of the servers comes and "creates" rice porridge with the remaining soup. I loved it. I have to confess, I love this porridge...which is a sign of old age, I think. So, if I were under 30, this place would be 4 stars. Unfortunately, I'm not. By far the best meat quality I've seen at any "hotpot" or "shabu" places in Atlanta. The premium beef is tender and the pork as well. They do not come frozen and they're fresh. The price is reasonable. The veggies that come as default sides are pretty good, and they include a few pieces of fish cake as well. The reason that I must give Gom Shabu Shabu 2 stars instead of 3 is because it is a "fake" shabu shabu joint. It's ok that the place is Korean owned, but they do not serve authentic shabu shabu. Shabu shabu should be served with Japanese goma shabu sauce for the meat and ponzu sauce for the veggies. Here, they make this weird sauce mix for you that is consisted of way too much scallion, sesame paste (I think), soy, and chili sauce. It just doesn't go with shabu shabu. You might think it weird for me to deduct stars just for a "sauce", but those who know hotpot and shabu shabu would know that the sauce is vital in the realm of hotpot and shabu. Another downside is that the meat portions are TINY. I'm not a big eater and even I had to order another side of meat on top of my beef & tripe combo. Each meat plate is probably only about 3oz of meat total. Overall, I like the meat quality and variety here, but the portion size and sauce really killed it for me. I've had my fair share of hotpot and shabu shabu, but this was my first time trying a shabu shabu restaurant in Atlanta. Gom Shabu Shabu is actually operated by Korean owners, so don't expect an authentic Japanese experience, but the fundamental elements are there: a clean broth and thinly sliced meats, served alongside a platter filled with veggies and noodles. One thing I love about shabu shabu is the clean, simple taste: you start with a basic broth, then cook and eat the different meats and vegetables; gradually, the flavors from all your ingredients linger in the broth and build a unique flavor into every bite. I was initially surprised by the color of the broth that the server poured into my pot -- it was purple, which I later assumed was because they use red cabbage as a main stock ingredient. From what I could taste, they didn't seem to use a traditional dashi broth as the base of their shabu shabu, one minor con. I ordered the beef (always opt for premium over the regular) and was served a plate of thinly sliced beef (about 15-20 slices) with a platter of portioned bean sprouts, napa cabbage, fish cakes, enoki mushrooms, sausage, clear noodles, sweet potato, bok choy, and an egg. Sounds like a myriad of random ingredients, but they all have a relatively mild flavor, which is enhanced by the dipping sauce while keeping the broth clear. Another plus - the sauce! Most of the hot pot restaurants in Atlanta have self-serving stations, but if you're like me, the vast array of options are a bit overwhelming. While there is an excitment in exploring and creating different flavor combinations, I'd much rather go straight to enjoying my meal without having to stand at the station, lost and confused, meticulously sampling each flavor but still failing to create a sauce I thoroughly enjoy (yes, this has happened multiple times). What I appreciate about Gom Shabu Shabu is that their waiters will create a dipping sauce for you, based on your level of preferred spiciness. Out of all the sauces I've tried, the one my server made for me was probably the tastiest one I've had. Mixed in with chili oil, sesame sauce, garlic, cilantro, peppers (and who knows what else) -- it was the perfect blend of spicy and tangy. IMO, this factor pushed Gom Shabu Shabu to the top of my mental list for hot pot in the Buford/Duluth area. At the end of it all, you leave feeling satisfied and not as if you'd just consumed a heavy meal. The prices are fair (there are far more expensive hot pot/shabu shabu restaurants in Atlanta than here), portions are plentiful, servers are great and I was very pleased with my experience. Located in Gwinnett, this place is actually Korean owned, even though Shabu Shabu is Japanese in origin. "Gom" means Bear in Korean. The meat quality is very good. The food itself is actually pretty excellent, very tasty. Unfortunately it's pretty pricey. I guess you should expect that with Shabu Shabu, but if you wanna leave full you should expect to pay at least $20. That knocks it down one star. What's interesting about this place is that unlike traditional Shabu Shabu, everyone gets their own little pot. No mixing germs here! I was intrigued by this at first but it works well. Service is pretty good and attentive. Some english skills are lacking, but hey, it's Gwinnett. We had two waiters... one guy was very quick and attentive and the service was great. Another was a dude who looked like a wannabe Kpop star. Pretty hilarious, he was in a full on suit, dressed to the nines... There was not congee porridge at the end of the meal at Gom like some folks got, but I have a feeling it was because they were super busy the night we were there.
