I don't know how I haven't rated this place yet because I've been here a lot. So I see a lot of reviews about how they randomly price things and yes it's absolutely true. LOL It's freaking hilarious to me though so I don't mind it. I just try to look homeless when I go there so I suddenly get my burrito for less. I swear I order the same thing every time and it's always random. They use like white rice instead of mexican rice for the burrito and I kind of love it. Their hotdogs are mid, might as well go to costco. Burger is fine, chili cheese fries are decent. I've driven past this place for years and have always been curious what it was all about. Randomly one morning I was on the search for a breakfast burrito and Happy Dogs came up on Yelp. First off, you can't miss it from the street! It has a happy little exterior and it's located right on the corner. The menu is a little overwhelming because they have it ALL. Omelettes, burgers, burritos, tacos, teriyaki you name it. We went with a bacon breakfast burrito and a turkey bacon breakfast burrito. HOLY COW were these bad boys BIG. For two burritos, it was $22. It took a minute to get our food, but it was served super hot! Love love loved their salsa. It was really spicy! Usually turkey bacon is a little boring, but here it was really tasty and actually a little crispy like regular bacon. Just because this place doesn't look super fancy, I wouldn't sleep on it like I did. I will definitely be back for my next breakfast burrito craving! This place is good and also convenient for me. They sell breakfast all day which is nice bc I like breakfast but sometimes don't get the chance to eat it in the am. We got the pancake plate and the French toast plate. The pancakes were thick and fluffy and the eggs and sausage were actually really good. The French toast was really undercooked in some areas although the areas that were fully cooked tasted delicious so I wish they would've been fully cooked all the way. Pretty disappointed with the food quality and most importantly quantity. My wife took two small bites of a patty melt sandwich and the meat was already gone. It technically wasn't even a patty melt anymore. Literally just bread and cheese. I got a cheeseburger and same issue. It was jammed pack with lettuce and barely any meat. I spent $35. The picture shows 2 chilly dogs for the combo. Got it and it was really only 1 dog for the combo. I asked for my money back. And they did. I've been coming here for years. It's wonderful, but yelp always forgets to tell me it's here when I'm scanning the neighborhood for som delicious, low-key eats. They do a great movie-set-food-truck-style Breakfast Burrito. For lunch, I usually get the teriyaki combo - a huge plate of beef, chicken, rice, and veg with a side of kimchi. There is a small shady outdoor eating area, but it's right on the boulevard, so it's hardly luxurious. But who cares? There are even a couple free off-street parking places around the back. Went here for lunch twice while on jury duty with co-jurors. The cashier, who seemed to be running the place, was sweet & the food was just what I wanted. Comfort & indulgence. Yesterday I got the kraut dog (no onions) combo & upgraded to chili cheese fries. Total was $14 for hot dog, soda and chili cheese fries. It was way better than the lunch I got Friday at another place down the street that cost me over $18 & left me unsatisfied. I was totally stuffed after I had the fries, they give you a lot of chili and cheese. The hot dog wasn't anything fancy but it was just what I was looking for. Today I had the tuna melt on rye with fries & a soda (& I remembered to take pics!). The tuna was savory (no sweet relish) & had a nice lemony tang. It was really good & tasted super fresh. That meal was a little over $15. There are so many things on the menu to choose from & I think I'd be happy with just about anything I ordered based on what other jurors & courthouse staff said. Both days,, the wait to order & get food wasn't long, though yesterday 1 co-juror, who ordered before me, had to check up on her order because several of us got our food before her. I think it may have just been because of what she ordered. When she got it, it was hot, fresh & delicious looking (and she said it was good). Some foods take longer to prepare than others. I live about 40 minutes from here & would go back for the chili cheese fries alone. Oh yeah and the tuna melt! There's a patio on the side where we sat today. This spot serves simple meals made with care by hard working folks. I was in the area when I saw the tiny shack and decided to give it a try. I was greeted by the cashier with a friendly greeting and big smile even before I had reached the counter. I ended up ordering a patty melt with fries and a drink. The dining area was just off to the side, a few tables and chairs. It's a bit noisy but it wasn't bad. The patty melt was good. It had crispy, buttery rye bread with a standard sized beef patty, melted gooey cheese, and sautéed onions. The fries were huge spears of golden brown potatoes, crunchy, lightly salted, and freshly made. I thought happy dogs was a small mom pop hot dog shop but I was blown at the variety they have on the menu. I went one day when I went for a walk with my kids. I was in the area and I was hungry (when am I not hungry?) and this place caught my eye when I walked past it. I ordered the small chicken teriyaki bowl, even though my belly was telling me to get the pastrami sandwich and fries, sofar, I'm digging this quaint little food shack. LA used to have so many of these places, but development and gentrification has made these places less common. I'm reminded of Molly's on Vine and Selma. Molly's was a little Korean burger joint, much like Happy Dogs. The rumor is, after a lengthy legal battle, the developer paid Molly's a substantial sum (over a million) and the lot where it stood is now a chichi commercial building. Anyway, I'm currently waiting for my food, and it's ready... The house kimchi is super tasty. I wish they gave me a lot more (but it's totally a reasonable amount). The teriyaki is a very good portion for a small. The veggies are a nice touch, and they aren't frozen. I'm curious to try the burgers, dogs, pastrami, and the bulgogi. However the sauerkraut was fantastic. I think what really gives this place its unique disposition is the fact that they serve everything.... I got the small chicken bowl (easy rice) and a bottle of water. Ran me $9. I think water was $2.50. Next time I'll remember to pack water. It took about 7 mins to get my order. The lady behind the cash register is very efficient. She made sure I had my fork and napkins. She no problem with me asking for soy sauce and additional napkins. I decided to give this another shot. I ordered a hot cakes meal and a root beer float. I noticed the menu on van nuys Blvd side doesn't have prices. They had another menu on the side of the street where you pick up the food. The meal said it was $12.33 and the root beer float was 3.45 the Asian lady didn't ring anything up on the register. I asked her how much and she said $19.00 I thought it was way too high. It was higher than farmer boys. I asked her for a receipt. She gave me a receipt but it didn't have any breakdown of what each item costed or how much was tax. It only had the total. This was the last chance for this place. It's a ripoff , be careful and be ready to pay high prices at this place. The food is somewhat good but the menu prices are not accurate since the Chinese lady makes up her own prices. This little jewel of a hot dog stand is nestled right across from the Van Nuys post office and courthouse. I didn't get the eponymous hot dogs, I'm waiting for Jay's place to open before I pay $2.50 for a frank. I went with the chicken bowl this time and was pleasantly surprised. Nice tender chunks of chicken grilled and nicely spiced mixed with veggies over a bed of rice. A light teriyaki sauce covered the bowl. I'm not normally a teriyaki fan because it's usually too sweet, but this was a nice balance between sweet and spicy. I'd definitely come back here whenever I'm stuck at the courthouse or in the SFV. After you place your order at the front window, the cashier will hand you a large wooden spoon or other utensil with your order number on it. When your order is ready, you make an exchange. The menu is extensive, ranging from teriyaki chicken bowls to fruit salad, but nobody would be caught dead eating those under the harsh glare of the Van Nuys sun. Those nutritious dishes are best nibbled under the cold fluorescent light of Dilbert's cubicle. This place is not painted red, white and blue for nothing; this is a red-blooded American burger joint. Most of the regulars, like our culinary sleuth, jump on combo # 1, a cheeseburger, medium drink and fries for $4.50. I was across the street for jury duty and decided to give this place a try. The menu had a good, diverse selection of food. I ordered a small teriyaki beef bowl. Menu said it was $8.22 and I was charged $10 with tax. I paid cash and was obviously overcharged $1.
