Sake flight + Takowasa (raw octopus w wasabi)
    Gina L.

Very friendly staff, and daily happy hour from 3-6pm! We stopped by for pre-dinner drinks on a Saturday around 5:30pm. Ended up sampling the sake flight (HH dealer's choice), a HH sake bottle, and the takowasa (raw octopus with wasabi). Cozy spot with tasty smells emanating from the various Japanese light bites. We inquired what the roasty toasty smells were (although did not order), and the waiter said it was probably the sausages and/or hot dog. We were planning to go to the soba noodle place next door but spent too long at Hannyatou (told it was a 1.5 hr wait!). Recommended to put your name down if you're planning to go Kamonegi after.

Our original dinner place wasn't taking huge parties without reservations, so my friends and I pivoted to this restaurant which was nearby that seemed small on the outside but thankfully had an extension outdoor seating in the back! It's located next to Midnight Cookie Co. and Kamonegi on N 39th St in Fremont. There is only street parking around the area that could be difficult during rush dinner hours, weekends, and during any events held in Fremont. We didn't realize that this restaurant was mainly a sake bar with only bar food. Luckily, their bar food menu was quite vast. It was a cold night and sitting outside was quite chilly. I saw that they had oden on their menu, and my eyes kept pivoting back to that option as it was soupy with a good amount of proteins. It was soooo nice. Really warmed my body and soul as I had this hot bowl of oden. Can never go wrong with oden as they're usually pretty standard worldwide. Loved how there was some mustard added on the bowl to mix in with my dashi soup. My boyfriend got their Katsu Sando. Small finger bites cut into threes. I wanted a try, so I stole a bite from one of his three finger bites. It was very flavorful and also quite crunchy! The bread and katsu were both crunchy which was what I had hoped. Yum! My friends and I also shared a Mapo Pork Nachos which had a nice unique flavor. It looked like light colored chili cheese nachos but once I took a bit, it was a nice Asian twist to the flavor of it. We all obviously had to try a sake as well. I knew Junmai was a good type of sake, so we asked our server for a Junmai recommendation. I can't seem to remember what his recommendation was, but the sake went down very smoothly. Overall, this was a cozy nice spot to gather with friends to drink and have snacks with. It was kind of a bummer that we missed happy hour time and that there weren't really full sized meals but now we know the next time we decide to go.

Fun and cozy Japanese bar right next to sister restaurant, Kamonegi. Happy hour is extremely worth it for sake and their Japanese inspired foods are the perfect size for sharing and whetting your appetite. Tables are slightly small but the timing of food and drinks will make you feel like it's never cramped. Had a great time with great service.

Came here on a Friday for the Happy Hour and had a great time. The food and drinks were excellent. Happy hour is from 4-6pm so we arrived right at 4pm so we could get a table. The place is pretty small, there's bar seating and probably 4-5 tables. They also have an outdoor patio too. It was raining when we went so it wasn't busy. We were the first party there and 2 more parties came in when we were seated. For drinks, I tried the sparkling plum cocktail and the Tokyo Hai. Both were good but I loved the Tokyo Hai, it was very refreshing, fruity and not overly sweet. All the food was excellent and I would order everything again. We got the oden, smoked clam dip, the Osaka dog and the katsu sando. Everything was great so I can't really list a favorite. The oden was nice and hot, perfect for a cold rainy day. I could really taste the clams in the dip and they gave us refills of the chips. The Osaka dog and Katsu sandwich was excellent! They have a nice combination of Japanese fusion food. Would definitely come back to try more things! I really want to try the mapo pork nachos

Love this place, it's really a sake joint with great happy hour and some authentic Japanese drinking food (think appetizers, snacks, finger food). They host sake events and the owner circulates different companies and brands of sake from Japan. Fantastic selection, lots of parking available and a great place to hang out and try a flight of sake with friends. I love how unpretentious Hannyatou is, great little Japanese bar in the heart of the city. If you've put your name on the waitlist for dinner next door (another popular Japanese restaurant), this is a great place to drink sake and wait it out. Opt for the back patio area which I found pretty and intimate. I enjoyed this place and I will be back for Happy Hour!

Addictive Bamboo and Mimiga. Lol. It's marinated pig ear slices and menma. And it's good!

Fremont, Seattle. June 2022. This can serve as a holding area for Kamonegi - like sitting in the lounge of a fancy restaurant having a drink while you're waitlisted for a table. This is also a legitimate stand alone sake and snack bar, owned by Soma Mutsuko, worthy as a destination on it's own. Whether you're a curious novice or a more knowledgeable drinker you'll find a friendly and patient staff ready to get you started in the right direction. Soma Mutsuko is usually on the line next door at Kamonegi but she'll frequently drop in during service lulls. The staff may also walk next door with prep or to cook items their kitchen cannot handle (like frying). Chef Soma is also a certified sommelier of Nihonshu so Hannyatou's offerings by the glass are limited but nicely curated. She is also a big fan of how pickled or fermented foods can pair so well with Nihonshu. Her bar snacks are also about fun - you have to see how she takes packaged ramen and fries them into chips. She loves to repurpose Top Ramen! A very friendly casual watering hole for good Japanese alcohol and reimagined bar snacks.

I came here with a girlfriend for a chill happy hour evening and Hannyatou didn't disappoint. The only negative was that I couldn't order soba from next door... I even tried asking twice, but no luck. I get it though, but had to ask anyway. The bar food here was tasty. We pretty much ordered everything off the menu. My favorites were the egg salad/ikura sando for sure.

This is one of the best sake bar I've been to. They offer variety of sake and dishes that goes well with it. Indoor dining is a bit small, but has a bigger outdoor seatings. The waiter was knowledgeable and very nice. I recommend to people who enjoys sake!

I was invited to Industry Night and celebrated Bruce OG San's 70th birthday at Hannyatou, just two doors down from Kamonegi (12/6/21). Immediately welcomed by the Hannyatou staff and later joined by Chef/Owner Soma Mutsuko. Yelp Elite/IG friend Wendy K also had her cousin's daughter, Staci, join us since she lives nearby. Easy going convo in an intimate bar setting. There are a few tables, 6 seats at the bar counter, and additional covered outdoor seating. Duly noted, amazing play list since both Wendy and I love 1970s-1980s R&B, funk, and disco. Bartender crafted great cocktails and kept us hydrated too with water. Staci, Wendy and I had respectively: Bruce's Ballard Tini, Yuzu G&T, and Toki Highball. We had a nice variety of tasty eats from the Hannyatou menu: *Bruce's Homemade Spam Musubi with matsutake mushroom, rice, and nori. *Chicken Chicharrones in secret yakitori sauce *Local Smelt Nanbanzuke with sweet/sour pickled vegies *Smoked Clam Dip with chips *Kurobota sausage with housemade mustard *Smoked Halibut Rillette with halibut cheek, celery, shallot, mayo served with saltines I also saw prepared the Cheese Katsu Sando with panko fried pork loin, Swiss cheese, cabbage, katsu sauce, and aioli. This sando was cut into thirds and handed to the person next to me. There was also Takowasa, diced raw octopus in wasabi root marinade. Pretty much my first experience at Hannyatou was most enjoyable. I look forward to returning and to learn more about sake. Many thanks to Wendy for the invitation and Industry Night cocktail and tasty eats. Good to meet Staci and especially Bruce, OG San and birthday celebrant. Thanks Chef and staff at Hannyatou, truly enjoyed my first visit!

A little bar restaurant with a cute back patio. The service was great and attentive. We got some cocktails and shochu. We also ordered the ramen chips and the dip was good. Eating dry ramen isn't my thing. We also got the pork nachos, which were just okay and a bit salty. We also got the fresh tofu dish and I liked that the best. It was similar to agadashi tofu but not fried tofu. I'd come back to try some of the sakes.

Delicious food, fun drinks, and the friendliest service. We always get the smoked clam dip. The patio has such a nice atmosphere.

Went to Kamonegi last Thursday and had a chance to check out Hannyatou out the past Monday to Celebrate "OG San"-Bruce Miyahara's birthday. After talking to the staff last week when picking up my tshirt I knew I wanted to come back and hangout. Only thing wrong with this bar is that I don't live closer. They recently started serving hard liquor, and have some creative cocktails with familiar ingredients to this Seattle born Japanese American. We got here around 5pm before it started getting crowded which was nice we had a chance to talk to the staff and get to know them and hear some great stories. Shared a number of bar snacks with my friend and fellow Elite Yelper Marie B and my niece Staci. Enjoyed the smoked clam dip, smoked halibut rillette, Bruce's house-made Spam in a matsutake gohan musubi, chicken chicharrones, pickled smelt with pickled veggies and the "tako" sausage with house-made mustard. Loved all of them especially the chicken skins. Others reminded me of stuff I had growing up so lots of nostalgia with ingredients. I had the yuzu gin and tonic, refreshing and all about trying anything with yuzu. My companions had a Toki Highball and the Ballard Martini. I love that the martini had rakkyo. Definitely getting one of those next time! Will definitely be back for a visit. Loved the 70s-80s old school r and b tunes. Thanks again to Soma and gang for the great time.

Came here for a spontaneous dinner since we were shopping nearby. I'm amazed that you don't have to make a reservation far in advance for such a tiny bar. This is the sake bar that accompanies Kamonegi next door but it's a great restaurant in its own right! I loved everything we ate here but especially the mapo pork nachos which is a genius idea. My husband really enjoyed the Tokyo hot dog. We ordered 5 dishes and had to take two of them home since we were so full. This feels like a real sake bar you could find in Japan. Service was polite and friendly.

The place is decorated in a fairly elegant and old school manner, so you are somewhat transported away from the outside reality. We got the Tobe's Thique Mint and Garden Party. I loved the creaminess and cinnamon afternotes of Tobe's Thique Mint, and it also looks somewhat pretty. It is quite a heavy drink, so one was enough to fill me up. The Garden Party was a bit of a miss since as much as I tasted the orange and grapefruit, it was a very light drink and tasted a little watered down. The biggest plus is that the drinks are fairly affordable compared to the greater Seattle area, priced at $14. I liked how their menu says 14 for $14, as they have just 14 cocktails to choose from and the drinks seem to rotate seasonally. For us, we went just in time to still have the spring menu, but they will change to the summer menu on June 20.

We ordered munchies and drinks while we waited for our table at Delancey. The bartender / server knew we would be headed to Delancey in 40 minutes or so, and handled things well accordingly. We got a plate of olives (tasty, great finger food) and drinks. The Yonder cider was good, not too sweet. The Martini was tasty. I had two quibbles: The first was with the pricing: the martini was charged as two separate items: 1) gin (I suppose the charge varies by the kind of gin or vodka in your martini) 2) martini (which is apparently the non-vodka or or non-gin part of your drink) While I'm sure this makes it easier to track for the bartender and inventory, as well as for charging, as a customer, it's a little odd to have a mixed drink be a two-part charge. The second was the included 20% automatic gratuity. I don't object to the concept of a standard service charge, I just wish it had been more prominently displayed so that I wouldn't have added a 20% tip on top of that (and my tip was on the amount that included tax, service charge and drinks / food). So, buyer beware ... the service is good, the ambiance is nice, the food and drinks are good -- but the payment / billing is non-standard, and can cause unexpected surprises.

Luckily, by this time of the meal, we have acquired the little table lamp, which enabled me to see the long fish bones that had not been removed. FIVE of them. The noodles are a pathetic overcooked limp pile. The best part is the turmeric sauce. Do not order this dish. Epilogue: I happened to walk by Sophon this past weekend. When we first got into the bar, the hostess asked us if we had a reservation, I hadn't known beforehand that you needed a reservation and I said no. They told us we were limited to sitting there for I think an hour or an hour and a half, I can't remember, but I thought it was weird considering at least half the restaurant was empty and stayed that way the whole time we were there. But after that weird interaction to start, the rest of our night was so magical. Sometimes I would get distracted from my book just looking at the decor. I love how open and spacious the place is and there were so many cosy reading spots. I ordered Daisy's Downfall which tasted kind of like a cosmopolitan and was absolutely delicious, I loved the bright flavours and how perfectly it paired with the charcuterie board we got. As a cheese lover, I was so excited to see they had charcuterie on the menu. The pear slices and the beechers cheese were some of the highlights. My boyfriend and I had a great time reading our books and taking cute aesthetic pictures for our Instagrams. The only thing that kind of threw me off is that fifteen minutes before we were about to leave, a couple on a first date was seated adjacent to us and were talking super loudly. But I was still able to lock in and finish my book and I had a great time, my boyfriend and I definitely want to come back for more reading dates.

The inside is so well decorated and it's like a library x bar. There were a lot of people just hanging out - reading, crocheting, etc and it was a very pleasant vibe. We both got drinks and a couple of flatbreads to share. I got Daisy's Downfall, which was the perfect cocktail imo and just the right strength. We shared the asian pear & proscuitto flatbread as well as the cauliflower curry one, both of which were really yummy! I loved the soft crust and crispy edges a lot. Service was super attentive as well. Overall, a great place to hang!

The service was amazing, our server walked us through the dishes and helped us choose. The chicken came out looking a little unseasoned but it was the table favorite because it had the most flavor out of everything else. Looks can be deceiving lol. That potato's are amazing and a good side dish! They have a little patio as well with heating!

Type of cuisine: "We never tire of talking to our guests about how we got our quirky name. Inspired by two British drinking terms, Brimmer & Heeltap seeks to celebrate the moments that exist between the first sip of one's libation and the last drops lingering at the bottom of the glass. Since late 2013 we've delighted in creating an environment that is inviting, lively, and comforting. A sense of playfulness is present in everything we do, from the inventive dishes our culinary team prepares, to the friendly, genuine hospitality we provide. We're a bistro that takes pride in being a neighborhood place - the kind you can escape to at day's end for a delicious meal shared among friends." Ambiance: "Located in the former Le Gourmand space in beautiful Ballard, Brimmer & Heeltap offers an intimate, cozy atmosphere complete with an open kitchen, full bar, and multiple sections to drink and dine in. Our garden patio is one of the best-kept secrets in the city, offering a dreamy place to dine outdoors during Seattle's spring and summer months. We also have a tucked-away back studio that offers the perfect setting for special, private gatherings year-round. Just how many pennies does it take to cover a floor? Just ask Brimmer & Heeltap's proprietress Jen who collected tens of thousands of them from family, friends, and the community to help execute the vision of a cool gathering placed dubbed, naturally, the "Penny Room." This dining room, beloved for both its wall of menus and its shining penny floor, is a favorite place to break bread with loved ones, and plays into the restaurant's blend of nostalgic and contemporary design. The restaurant was designed in collaboration with Sean Sifagaloa of KRFTWRK and local builder Mike Marian, owner of Marian Built. Light, texture, metal, wood, and floral elements are all at play here. This historic building possesses a playful, familiar charm that we wanted to preserve in its latest incarnation." What I ordered: Wishing to sample a little of everything, we were served, family style, two orders of Bread ($9 each) - buttered with salt and pepper; Fritto Misto ($12) - assorted, lightly fried and pickled vegetables with tarragon aioli; Smashed Burrata ($19) - snap peas, preserved lemon, mint, basil, sherry reduction; Carrot & Tahini Dip ($16) - caramelized garlic, feta, pistachio, crudite; two orders of Heirloom Tomatoes ($21 each) - melon, chevre, crispy quino, soft herbs; Crispy Potatoes ($16) - whipped feta, hot honey, mint; Mushroom Agnolotti ($34) - roasted maitakes, chanterelles, whipped ricotta, miso butter, thyme; Roast Chicken ($42) - chickpea, berbere yogurt, marinated cucumber, mint gremolata. To finish off our meals, we shared the Olive Oil Cake ($14) - basil yogurt cremeux, strawberry gel, and the Chocolate Tiramisu ($16) - mascarpone, rum, amaretto, candied hazelnuts. What I loved: Oh man, every dish was delightful. I found something to savor and repeat in each of the dishes we were served. From the sweetness of the heirloom tomatoes, to the creamy burrata, from the crispy potatoes, to the fresh peas and everything in between. Our least favorite, at the table was the mushroom Angnolotti, inconsistent from bite to bite. The presentation of the Carrot & Tahini dip was a bit haphazard compared to the rest of the dishes served, but the flavor was still lovely. Why I loved it: The service was unparalleled, comfortable yet professional and quick to offer recommendations for our larger party. The decorations and quaint spaces truly welcoming, and the food, excellent. Cost: High ($40+ per person)
