Hazelwood is that a cool, jivey (not divey) spot down the strip that doesn't have as much hubbub as some of the other popular spots in the area. It doesn't look like much at first, but the drinks pack a punch. The menu has a wide variety of cocktails broken down into 6 "categories" from there are 4 cocktails within each one this makes about 24 unique different cocktails. The 6 categories are - "Birds", "les Filles", "Blood", "Saints", "Horses" and "Weather". I'm not sure what they all mean, but each cocktail within has names that suit its category. For example, I like the "Sante Sangre" from the "Blood" section. It's Tequila, Lemon, Campari, a little champagne and more shaken up and poured right in front of you. Let's take a second to talk about the bartender dude. He's been there in my handful of visits, and he does are awesome. He looks a hip bartender that you'd see in a fancy TV or movie bar but he's here at Hazlewood and is nice when putting in your order. The vibe here is again, chill and intimate. Definitely the spot you come to for a slower interaction like a date or tight group of friends. It's dimly lit with old timey photographs on the wall that some may consider creepy, but I think it suits look, like you're in the 1700's again but sipping fancy cocktails. There is decent seating, a few spots outside and upstairs but not much more which is fine because I feel that take away what makes Hazlewood great- Great drinks, with a chill classic feeling vibe. So, if you want a good range of strong craft cocktails, I recommend Hazlewood. read more

This is the type of place that I've been searching for. I wish that I had a bar like this back home. It doesn't even feel like a bar. It feels like I'm in someone's cozy house. The decor has a sort of dark cottage core vibe, which I LOVE!! I wanted to try a specialty drink so I opted for a Hot Toddy. Not only was my drink visually appealing, it was absolutely delicious and hit the spot for me to end the evening and retire to my cozy bed. This was hands down the best Hot Toddy that I've ever had. It even came with a little crochet sweater on the glass Joey, our bartender was an absolute gem and provided the best drinks, conversation and really added to the ambiance. The crowd was very cool as well and made this experience very enjoyable. I will definitely come back here when I'm in town. read more

I walk by here weekly and the only time I was there was on a pub crawl about 10 years ago and they kicked us out, which I don't blame them. I would've as well because we were out of control and it was our last stop. Glad my husband and I stopped in for a drink on our date night recently. It did not disappoint, and I loved the vibe. Hazelwood wraps you in its cozy embrace. The main room's chandelier adds a touch of elegance, and every room has a unique look. We didn't go upstairs but I'm sure it has the same vibe. They have a ton of Crafted Cocktails. Pretty sure they take their mixology seriously. Each drink has a unique name, often grouped together by themes. The Bartender was knowledgeable and made each drink like it was his precious art. It was great! You might find yourself chatting with a stranger with a cat on his shoulder and a dog by his side. Hazlewood is a great place for drinks with friends. If it get crowded, it can be slow to get a drink, as there is only one bar and it's hard to serve multiple people at once but the wait is worth it. The cocktails are so creative, and they have a good mix of cocktails to choose from; I've never had a bad drink here. This place isn't as good for big groups. With two rooms available for conversations, we eventually arrived at the counter and ordered a couple of straight-forward cocktails with house spirits. After getting the drinks, we made our way to a table which we ended up bussing. Upon returning the glassware, a staff member explained they had just arrived and were overwhelmed by a large group of people. Completely understandable if cocktails were a priority over table service. Shortly after, we received a friendly countertop cleaning, the nearby lights were adjusted, and candles later provided to make the space feel more intimate. During this period, we saw numerous couples review accommodations (or lack thereof) and migrate to another area of the lounge. Eventually we left, but not before returning the glassware we used for our cocktails. Final thoughts. Hazelwood provides a sense of intimacy without charging you a lot for their cocktails made with house spirits. If you like craft cocktails then this place is a must, they have a good list on their menu but you can also get a custom drink made. When I walk into this bar, I instantly feel trendy, more sophisticated, and cool. Hazlewood is small, but has vibes very similar to bars on the Upper West Side in NY. They have an eclectic collection of wall art, some mirrors, heavy velvet drapes, old news clippings, and animal busts. I mentioned to a friend how I wish I could put together a bunch of vintage items like Hazlewood has and have it come off as a "vibe" instead of a garage sale. Upstairs is really where I go to sit and enjoy. There are several couches, and it definitely feels like a lounge. It can get a bit loud from the groups of people below waiting in line for the bar, but overall I've found the upstairs part to be the most enjoyable. You don't see people below, so it's almost like an exclusive lounge area for you and a few other parties. Oddly enough, whenever I come here, it's busy but not too packed. Once we order, however, large crowds seem to magically accumulate behind us. For such a small space, it really can fit a healthy number of people. Well-behaved, maybe older, dogs are around during the day/happy hour times. Hazlewood only has cocktails, plus a few beers/ciders/wine. They are known for their cocktails and each one I've had is delicious. The Witch's Tits that I got on this most recent visit was effervescent and crisp, exactly what I wanted for a summer evening. The Blood and Sand that I had during the cooler months was smoky and sultry. There is no food available here. I do wish there could be some nuts or small items to snack on, but I saw people in the bar with food from elsewhere, so good to know for next time! Each cocktail does take a bit to make, and with only one bartender, you can be standing at the counter to order for a bit. Honestly, I didn't mind it at all. I was met with an argument when asked if we'd be able to switch drinks. As a previous service worker (i.e NYC restaurant manager and bartender) I would NOT recommend this bar if you are looking for a craft cocktail or anything other than the standard/juice drink. Came from Percys and ended up going back with GREAT bartenders and drinks. Wish I could've wrote something different but mostly due to POOR service on the bartenders part which should've been an easy switch drink wise. Also drinks are not "craft" if that's what you're looking for. I really have to agree with most of the reviewers' reviews because this place is a small speakeasy-type bar with two floors and one bathroom. The chandeliers are quite fancy and for some reason the bar area reminded me a little of Grim's on Capitol Hill but smaller. The cocktails are stiff so you definitely get your money's worth. The upstairs area was a bit empty when our group came in on a Saturday evening and we did a little feng shui so that we could make room for all of us. They didn't seem to mind that we moved one of the couches over to the other side with the table. That was convenient! I'd definitely come back here for drinks because it's a nice spot to catch up with an old friend or something. Upon entry, we immediately befriended several folk, including an newly engaged couple, a bartendress and her sweet bf, an east coast bartender who was no nonsense in a Dr. Zeaus T shirt, and our new best bud, Tom 'the flavor tip' last name I forget. I gave him that nickname, btw.. It's a long story. It has to do with Bacon Salt, fyi. Anyway- the drinks were good and on par with any other bar.. but seriously, I don't know of any other place in this city where someone you met 10 minutes prior is trying on your tight women's jacket and droppin' trou in the middle of the bar, just to show you 'Chauncey', a 12" tattoo on his thigh of a cartoon penis. I love their clientele, their awesome staff, and their drinks. It's cute and quaint and they've got a great patio.
