Joe was great and called me to discuss my project and potential alternatives. I ended up having drywall repaired as well as a few odd jobs in between the drying times. The 2 crew members ran into some unforeseen material issues, but both were very friendly and professional. The end result was very good. Unfortunately, the job ran longer than personally budgeted for (took 4 hours instead of 2). Joe personally called to explain the job hours. He is very professional and personable, especially during these stressful times for both individuals and businesses. What seemed like it might be a pricey job (a broken water pipe inside a bathroom wall) turned out to be a more minor one (pipe disconnected, not broken), which Demond found and fixed inside an hour. His drywall patch afterward came out nice too. Process was streamlined because Handico could do both parts of the job (some plumbers said I'd have to hire someone separate to fix the drywall). Had a small plumbing job which didn't go well and fired them on the spot. The owner refused to come over and inspect so sent him pictures. Handico demanded full payment in spite of admitting that it was not up to standards. i advised would pay for materials but not labor as job not properly done. I have used HandiCo 3 times, 2 of those times were in the last couple of months. I have had them install chandeliers, pendant light, and a ceiling fan as well as regrout a bathtub. In all three instances I was very happy with the work that was done. In addition, the workers showed up on time, were pleasant and professional and got the jobs done in the estimated time I was given. Handico was easy to work with and Pablo was fantastic. He's as nice and personable as they come, and he has vast knowledge on everything I needed done and then some - priming / painting, caulking and grouting. He would check with me on anything that wasn't clear to make sure he did exactly what I wanted. When he noticed that I had picked up the wrong material, he let me know and told me why it wasn't right, and then he went to pick up the correct grout. Working with HandiCo was about as good as it gets. My wife and I bought a new home and I was worried about finding somewhere that could sufficiently address our needs (ranging from new electrical outlets installed to drywall/painting to vent installation) but after communicating with Mike, he ensured me it would be no problem. Pablo, the handyman that took care of everything, was absolutely incredible. He was extremely thorough, communicative, and did an amazing job on everything. I called HandiCo based on reasonably positive Yelp reviews. We had a pretty simple job of fixing some water damaged plaster in our condo. I spoke to owner Mike on the phone, submitted pictures online like he asked, and got a pretty timely quote of $88 per hour per person. He said he would send one person and they could get it done in a day. So I booked Handico. Julio was scheduled to arrive between 11am-1pm, but didn't arrive until almost 2pm and brought another person with him so they could finish the job in a day. So we were billed for two workers instead of one. After Julio and his companion satisfactorily competed the job, they added a $16 credit card charge to the bill. Seemed a little high, especially on top of paying for a two man job instead of the one man job we were quoted, so my husband asked for a credit. Julio called owner Mike on his cell phone and explained that my husband wanted a credit, to which Mike replied "Oh yeah? Does he want a [obscene sex act] too?" My husband overheard this very clearly and Julio, for his part, was very embarrassed and apologetic. Bottom line, the service and work itself was mediocre at best, and based on owner Mike's behavior HandiCo has nothing but contempt and disdain for a customer making a reasonable request. There are many, many other options for repair services in Chicago, and I would strongly discourage anyone from giving their hard earned money to HandiCo. read more

I called Handico after a drawer in my kitchen broke off it's hinges and crashed to the ground. The repair required was to install new gliders to the interior frame of the cabinet, and attach a new glider to the drawer itself so it would easily slide back in. The Handico repairman arrived, and promptly advised me he would not be able to fix the drawer as the parts were only available directly from the cabinet manufacturer. He made no effort to contact the manufacturer to ensure this was the case, and left shortly after arriving. I was charged the minimum visit amount by Handico which was well over $100. I could've accepted this, except for the fact that the following week, my 60 year old mother came to visit. She went to Home Depot (not the manufacturer of my cabinets), got new glider parts, and had the drawer reinstalled after a few hours of hard work. Next time I, or my condo association, needs a repairman, I will be contacting a different company. read more

This is the first and last time I use Handico. The only thing saving them from a 1 star review is that Julio did a good job...I think. If I could give 1.5 stars, I'd do that. Andy, who came out to do the quote, was very friendly and gave the impression that he knew what he was talking about. Unfortunately, we later discovered that he really didn't since none of his estimates were on target. Had we done what he recommended, we would have spent several thousand dollars unnecessarily. I'm not particularly handy so I'm usually willing to give a handyman service the benefit of the doubt, but this got ridiculous. First, we needed drywall inspected/repaired after a leak in the ceiling. Andy was pretty sure we were going to have to tear out part of the ceiling and 1-2 entire cavities in the wall due to mold. When Julio came to actually do the repairs, he said (and was proven correct) that there were very little chance of mold being on the vertical walls and the only mold was the ceiling. So far, nothing too bad. However, because the reality was fairly different than what Andy led us to believe, we started doing our own research for the other jobs was asked Handico about. Second, we had some Toto toilets that had been running nonstop for a while. Andy took one look at them and declared that he was certain that the problem was defective design of the toilets. He said this was a well-known issue for one-piece toilets because they weren't able to seal properly. He even open up the tank and pointed to where he claimed the problem would be. His recommendation was to get rid of all the toilets (these are expensive Toto toilets and we have 3) and replace them with two-piece toilets. This turned out to be complete nonsense. We could find no evidence of this supposedly common problem being mentioned anywhere online and, after talking to another plumber (who, when I mentioned Handico, said "Oh, that guy isn't actually a plumber."), determined that the problem was just the tail of chain on the flapper was preventing a seal. After shortening the tail, the problem was solved. It took about 30 seconds and was free. How Andy missed the obvious solution even after he looked in the tank is beyond me. Third, we wanted to run a new electrical outlet from a light fixture above our fireplace so we could mount our TV above the fireplace. We were didn't care about using the fixture anymore so were happy to just divert the lines. Andy claimed this would be extremely difficult, take 2-3 full days of work, and cost around $1200. We went to Home Depot and a very helpful sales person got us set up with everything we needed for $37. The whole job only took me the afternoon (and only because I had to stop while the baby took a nap). Aside from the work itself, Handico took two full weeks to get back to us with our estimate and then would have added an additional charge for paying by credit card (they claim they just discount the price if you pay by cash/check, but price they provide in the quote is actually the cash/check price. You only find out about this so-called discount when you try to pay with a credit card.) There are a lot of positive reviews and they currently have 4.5 stars, but I definitely did not receive anywhere close to that level of service. I'd make sure to get at least another quote or two before having Handico do any work. read more

I'm adding a star because I've since gotten some other estimates for work in my condo that were much lower than what I paid for HandiCo. So, I sent a follow up email to Mike @ HandiCo and he wrote back letting me know that they would look into the exact charges and get back to me with a better explanation. A few days later I got another email from Mike with a very thorough explanation of the charges and a review of the invoice. I definitely appreciate them going out of their way to make sure that everything was clear and overall I was not dissatisfied with their work. My experience with the people of HandiCo was great, I got exactly what I was looking for, my rating is simply because I feel that $350 to install an outlet is excessive. read more

I have no idea if these guys do quality work or not - but they certainly were a waste of my time. I'm selling my condo and have a number of things to be fixed before listing it. So Matt came out for the estimate; he was on time, took notes and pictures of the 7 different things I needed done - overall spent about 45 minutes there. But then it took 10 days, 2 emails and a phone call to actually get the estimate to me. And the estimate I did receive was incomplete; apparently Matt forgot almost half of the work I had requested - guess that'll happen when you take 10 days to write up the proposal. I'm surprised that I'm the first review for HandiCo. I had some work done by them a couple weeks ago and was very happy with the responsiveness, friendliness, quality of work, and the personal interest and initiative that Mike took in working to schedule my 'small' job. He worked with me on pricing, suggesting some things that I could do myself to decrease the amount of (billable) time spent by his team. T The worker that the company sent, Demond, showed up on time, was friendly, introduced himself and did a good (and complete) job - including set-up and clean-up. In the city, you sometimes don't know what you'll get - it put me immediately at ease when he showed up in a HandiCo shirt and introduced himself to me before entering my home. I'd gladly use them again for any projects around the house that I don't feel like I can do well myself. A side note on the payment - they accept credit cards, but there is a surcharge / fee associated with this method of payment. read more

HandiCo is a wonderful company.. if you need a handman/carpenter for anything, do not hesitate to call them. I called HandiCo to have our back door looked at.. Tom was able to come by two days later and evaluate the situation. They let us know what they needed and a few days later, Tony came to our home (on literally the coldest day of February). He told me he was going to Home Depot to get the hinge he needed, came right back, installed and adjusted everything necessary and we were good to go. Both men were (1) extremely punctual and (2) very pleasant. I would work with HandiCo again in a second (and certainly ask for Tom and Tony by name). Five stars. read more

I used HandiCo to remove a set of glass blocks separating my living room and bedroom (unit came like that, go figure). Tom arrived a few minutes earlier than scheduled and did a great job! He was probably the most cheerful person I've heard at 7:30 am. It took him longer than originally quoted and there were a few additional charges that were not clear in the initial quote. Despite that, the final total still came out under the quotes I received from other vendors and Tom did an amazing job patching up the drywall. Yet another excellent experience with HandiCo. Our real estate agent recommended them when we just moved in and they did a great job with numerous touch ups. After over a year in our new place we thought that we should install an over the range hood which would do a better job venting the than an over the hood microwave. There was no doubt on who we should choose to do this job, so we contacted HandiCo. They allowed us to purchase our own hood (and save money) and just charged just for installation which involved removing a microwave and some cabinets. Tom from HandiCo showed up on time, explained the process and got to work. In under six hours everything was done and looking and working great! I had mixed experiences with HandiCo. Mike is always very responsive to online requests. I've had Demond come once. His work was excellent and he finished the job in less time than estimated. However, I also had another guy who complained about everything under the sun most of the time he was in my home, and his so-so work took longer than quoted to complete. I called Handi co and they returned my call promptly and had someone out within a couple of days. Drew was very helpful and professional, tidy and easy going. We had an issue where I needed shelving up but my wall was made of masonry with little room in between for anchors. I did not pick up all the proper parts that would possible have made it easier. So after he went to try to get some anchor hardware that would work, but we could not put up the shelves due to the wall material. Drew explained the issues and I understood. Having worked on houses i know you can't always know what you are getting yourself into until you see the wall make up. Some answers just don't work and I understood that. We could have continued, he had some answers but I decided to bail on the project. Due to this I recommend asking what you need done and making sure you have all the right pieces to make it easier and save them and you a trip to the store while they are on the clock. The other shelves and art work were put up in a jiffy and all the mess cleared away. I was not disappointed in the service at all, just in my walling being difficult and not having the right peices ahead of time. But Drew explained what I could try to do to get some up, but I just decided to abandon the idea so I did not spend more money on it. Overall very courteous, thorough and helpful. This is the fourth time I've used Handico and I'm happy to write another review. This time they repaired a small hole in the drywall of my apartment and painted the whole wall. I've had friends help with jobs like this but it's always a mess and never looks perfect. Julio did an awesome job, hung a pot rack, and fixed my bathroom door which never quite hung right. These guys gave me a quote to do a simple repair. Seemed reasonable. Next thing you know I got the bill for 3 X's the amount they orignially quoted. No phone call to let me know the job was going to cost more. Contacted the company and everyone I spoke with was exceptionally rude. After getting nowhere I called back asking for the President Mike Lynch, I was transferred to the same exact rep stating he was the president and that I was crazy and told me to settle down. I have used HandiCo now for several projects, and the service and workmanship have been consistently professional and more than satisfactory. A notable example is that they replaced my basement door - difficult because it's a very old building, the space was uneven and the surrounding walls are brick. Several months later they returned for another project and I remarked that the door was hard to open. We chose Handico for two reasons. One, they were local to us in Bucktown. Two, they had received very good reviews on Yelp and Angie's List. Thus far, we've been pleased with their work. They were hired to eliminate building leaks in our 4-unit condo building. They provided tuckpointing services and re-sealed the building as well as some other leak penetration fixes. The employees, both management and the onsite staff, were very professional and courteous. They performed the work on time in about the amount of time they had quoted. We did have one hiccup in that a lintel replacement took a lot longer than anticipated but that was due to the developer installing one much larger than they should have and that required a lot of additional time to remove the split block to get to it. As for the quality of work, it appears to be good. Unfortunately we won't be able to confirm it until spring and the rains return but they said they'll be willing to work with us if there continues to be any problems. read more

I used Handico this past week to help paint a hallway, fix a screen door, and fix a closet door. They sent Demond on the job, and he was pleasant, helpful, hard-working, and knowledgable. The walls came out perfect, and he fixed both my closet door and screen door quickly and effectively. I bought a new dishwasher and when it was delivered, we found that the electrical from original install was positioned (incorrectly) in such a way that we couldn't get the old dishwasher out or get a new dishwasher in. Handico was the cheaper of the two estimates that we got (by a lot), and Andy came out and did a great job moving and re-routing the electrical and installing the new dishwasher. He was friendly and efficient, and the final price was actually lower than the estimate. The dishwasher is working great! We will definitely use Handico again. read more

Called them for 2 jobs(fixing/replacing locks and plumbing). They were able to make something within 48 hours work. The handyman was within his 2 hour window, professional and knowledgeable. My only head's up is they charge a 2 hour minimum so make sure you have enough "tasks" that will take the entire 2 hours. read more

I wish I could write a good review for these guys as they came so highly recommended by yelp. I was surprised how many positive reviews were actually posted, and almost no negative ones. I described my problem to them over email, however their initial estimate (without actually doing the work that was needed) came to over $700 - about five times more than a couple of other businesses in the area. I offered to pay a minimum 2hh fee to have someone come out and see if the issue was even repairable - however they just said they were not a good fit for me. Ha! Again, I wish I could add to the string of stellar reviews, however they were completely inflexible and uninterested in doing business, again - without seeing what the actual issue was. very expensive. very disappointing. read more

I called HandiCo because of all of the great reviews online. I have a biz in Andersonville and needed a new hydraulic door closer replaced. They explained about the two hour minimum of service requirement, but were eager to tell me how to troubleshoot and find a replacement myself. No work done for me, but with the courteous and helpful service just over the phone, I will definitely be calling them back when I have a bigger job! read more
