This is the second time I have used Master Handymen in Chicago. The first was many years ago for a punch list while selling a condo. This summer, my husband and I had years' worth of jobs ready for Gino and his team. Gino responded quickly to my initial email and came out to see our long list of jobs (some larger, such as installing gutters on our garage for a water barrel and demolishing and rebuilding our deck from house down to backyard patio). Had a great experience with Gino and his crew. I definitely rolled the dice a bit, because I went solely on Yelp reviews. I emailed Gino details on a family room rehab and a bathroom rehab. He gave me everything in writing based on dimensions I provided. I put down a deposit for half the job, and waited a few weeks until they could come out. I couldn't be happier with the results! Gino's crew was polite, professional, and very skilled. They helped talk us through ideas and issues that arose along the way, and the final jobs look amazing. We replaced the walls, ceiling, baseboards, fixtures, and window casings of our family room, and replaced the tile, vanity, and fixtures in our bathroom. Gino was communicative and amenable to additions and tweaks along the way, and his crew finished ahead of schedule by a few days. The quality of the work made the price (about $8k) worth it. I have been using Gino and his team for at least three years for a variety of projects around our condo. If you aren't an established client, you may have to work a little to get a response from you, but once you're on "the list", this is a responsive, proactive, communicative team. Gino's team investigated a potential water issue (after coming in to repair a few loose tub tiles and seal the edges of the tub) - after locating the problem, they stopped to tell us that they believed the repair was larger than initially anticipated, going to such lengths to check out our upstairs neighbors' bathroom to ensure they could provide a permanent solution. They also - because of these hidden water issues - re-did our entire guest bathtub, much to our delight. It was a meticulously completed project, and I look for EVERY. SINGLE. DETAIL. We also recommended Master Handymen to our condo association to have a water spigot in the front of our building. This project had a few hiccups, but Gino ensured that his crew came out and fixed each issue we had without nickel and diming the association for coming back out. Overall, this company has been honest and forthcoming with what they can do and what is outside of their scope, and is also clear about how long projects might take to complete (no "sure, we can do it in a week", then finding out they're booked out for 2 months). I had a basement leak (above foundation) and what we suspected was a leaky backdoor. Gino's team came in and cut away the damaged ceiling to investigate for source as well as installed a stormdoor over the backdoor to prevent any more water intrusion. When our furnace humidifier wasn't working this winter, we immediately contacted Gino, who was able to schedule us in two days later. Adi came by and replaced the humidifier valve and the water shut off valve (which was leaking). Since my first review 2.5 years ago we've had several other projects with Master Handyman. They've helped us rehab two bathrooms and a kitchen and they've given us advice on several other small items. As I mentioned in my previous review, we try and do as much as we can DIY and then we ask Master Handyman to step in for the things that are really difficult. Our recent home presents extra challenges as its 100 years old and nothing is straight or straight-forward. This past winter break we attempted to make small safety updates to our kitchen since we have an infant who's about to start crawling. Those small updates led us into a completely unplanned kitchen renovation (eek!). Master Handyman came out on two days notice and helped us re-drywall a huge section of the kitchen and they were soooooo amazing. My husband was traveling, I was sick, and the baby and the dog were causing anarchy all day - I pretty much told Omar from MH to just do whatever he thought best and I was thrilled with his work. That's the beauty of working with MH, I don't have to hover or stress about the work - I know it'll just get done and done well. And our drywall project wasn't simple. the two walls that meet aren't straight, but Omar made them appear so. He also had to drywall and taper a column perfectly because we had literally 0 room for error in order to make sure the stove could go back into that space. I have no idea how he did it, but it worked! Following the drywall, we had MH's floor guy out a couple of weeks later to lay oak floors in our kitchen. The rest of our house is oak floors throughout and we knew we couldn't match them perfectly, but we wanted to get a more seamless look. First, I'll admit that I thought about going with laminate and Gino at MH talked me out of it. I really appreciate a contractor who can push back and give me good reasons, but then tell me it's ultimately my decision. I've always gotten great advice and insight from Gino and team. Second, our floors, like our 100 year old walls, aren't level. There's no way a couple of first time DIYers could have laid these well. I was shocked when I came home to find perfect looking flooring in my kitchen. So let's talk about money. Given that we're trying to renovate our home to eventually sell and make a profit, we aren't splurging on anything - we meticulous want to make sure what we do has ROI. What I like about working with Gino is that I can be upfront about my budget and he talks me through what his team can do with that budget and he also tells me how I can make the budget go further. If he thinks I should reconsider my budget and expand it, he'll be honest about that too. Most of our projects are fixed bids with Gino, but we've also had projects that were estimates and tallied costs at the end. Every time there's been a cost increase I've gotten a call in advance of the work to discuss the issue and possible resolutions. Having worked with many contractors I feel like Gino is by far the most transparent about money and costs. We're exhausted from our "accidental" kitchen renovation, but when we get around to it we'll be calling Gino at MH for future projects! read more

I have been trying to find the right painter for months so I contacted Master Handymen. Luckily, this painting job isn't time sensitive because I still haven't found the right painter nor would I give my business to Master Handymen. I e-mailed Gino to get an estimate. He responded quickly and after a series of e-mails we set up an appointment for him to come by to look at the space. Prior to our appointment, I provided him with three contact numbers: my home phone, cell phone and my husband's cell. On the day he was scheduled to arrive, we were having problems with both our home phone and our building's intercom system. Though I can't be certain, I assume he tried to contact us by home phone and intercom before leaving a curt, disgruntled message on my husband's cell phone basically accusing us of blowing him off. We immediately called back to explain what happened, and his phone went directly to voicemail. My husband left him a message and then attempted to contact him several more times. He did not contact us at all, via e-mail or by phone, which indicated to me that our business was not important to him. Based on the customer service (or lack thereof) that we experienced, I would not recommend anyone giving Master Handymen their business even if other Yelp reviews are positive. read more

Unreliable and less than honest I contacted Master Handymen (Gino) based on the Yelp reviews and a reference from neighbor who uses his services on a regular basis (he's in real estate). We needed plasterwork, woodwork and painting, as well as some larger projects including remodeling a kitchen and bathroom. I got a prompt response and a visit to go over the work. I wanted the painting / plastering work done before the end of September, so I made a point of contacting them in early June knowing they might be busy. After the visit, I was told he would send an estimate within the week. He didn't. Hearing nothing, I followed up in August - to confirm they would be available to do the work and that it could be done before the end of September (just the plasterwork and painting). Gino emailed me back that he he had been very busy (no problem), that he could do the work and that he would send me an estimate in the next few days. He didn't. Now I am looking elsewhere and am behind schedule. read more

They just repaired a damaged wooden window frame and trim we had been trying to fix for months, with several companies turning down the project for the amount of work required. Finally. A single contractor (actually a group of guys) that I can hire for most everything. I've used these guys for painting several times and some plaster repair. Turns out that they do everything so I had them back for plumbing, electrical work and even ceramic tile since then. While checking on their references I dropped in where they were remodeling an entire home -- kitchen, baths and everything -- and it looked great. If you have had repair and remodeling jobs done you know the typical problems - no shows, late, starting a job and then disappearing for days at a time to start some other job... But now after at least a half a dozen jobs using these guys I have not had any of these all too typical problems. * They always show up at the agreed upon time for an estimate. * They always give me a reasonable estimate. * They always do the job right. * They can handle large jobs. * They are willing to take on small jobs. For some reason (maybe it just makes life easier) it pleases me to no end that I can call the same crew for almost everything -- whether it is to unplug a stopped drain, install a ceiling fan or remodel a kitchen... if I need a painter or plumber, electrician or carpenter it's still one call. You could call him/them a handyman, or a handyman service, but they are really more than that. ====================================== update: August 19, 2009 These guys came through for me again. All of that rain in the spring left me with some water damage. When Gino and crew was finished replacing some drywall and patching the rest it looked perfect. What is really COOL is that when they had the wall open they sprayed an "anti-microbial agent" behind the wall to prevent mold from growing. And they used a special stain blocking primer so the stain doesn't show up again like it does when you just paint over the bad spots. read more

I hired these guys for 3 jobs at different times The first job was a plaster tear out and drywall replace and paint. This job was done perfectly, although it came out higher than originally quoted. The second job was a electrical light sconce hallway light. They did this ok although the electrician could not figure out how to make a 3 way switch work correctly. I'd expect a professional to know how to do this. They also left the hole in the wall for me to repair. The third time they were a no show. They wanted me to reconfirm the date and time that I had already chosen to have the work done. In all honesty I did not reconfirm a date and time that I had already requested. so I burned a day waiting for a no show. I asked them to come the next Saturday and their guy was booked. Gino and his crew do nice work and I have referred him to friends, who are also happy with the work . I'm just a little cheesed off about the no show and the "I'm booked already" response. So there you have it some great work, some ok work, and a schedule snafu. All adds up to a 3 1/2 overall in my book. read more

I just finished several, lengthy home improvement projects that I've frankly put off for years out of abject fear over the process (I think the Tom Hanks' film "The Money Pit" left me scarred). So a couple months back, after a strong reco of Master Handymen, I pulled the trigger. And while doing major work on a vintage building has its fair share of surprises, Gino and his team was professional, proactive, honest and responsive at every step of the way. This work included a total rip out/replacement of original hardwood floor, major new electrical work for fixtures, power and DSL/Satellite, fixing major patches of drywall with foundational cracks and repainting of some pretty tough colors. I am very pleased with the work and can not recommend Gino as a GC for whatever size project you have. read more

Gino, the owner, responded to my messages very quickly and was able to setup an appointment with ease. I needed a fan and chandelier hung on a ~16 foot concrete ceiling with some additional conduit run. The licensed electrician, John, came out and did a fantastic job. He took care to cover my couch and some cabinets in plastic so the concrete dust did not coat everything. The fixtures looks great, exactly what I wanted. I knew the hourly prices upfront and so there were no surprises. Will definitely give them a call back if I need any other work done. Needed to have work done in the living/dining room and adjacent bedroom (patching,priming and painting of plaster walls and ceilings and ripping out the old carpeting). Radu came out the following day to take see what work needed to be done and take measurements. I received the proposal via email from Gino later that night and decided to give them a try. The walls were prepped to my satisfaction and the paint job looks excellent. After the carpeting was ripped out, I decided to go with a new hardwood floor and am very pleased. It looks great!. I selected Gino based on yelp reviews and thank gosh I did! My small tile job turned into gutting and redoing my entire shower due to water damage from my upstairs neighbor. He could not have been more responsive and helpful through the whole process and his guys are top notch. I have spent a lot of hours on the phone with him talking through options and he has been incredibly patient and helpful. My neighbor's contractor even came in to look at the shower and see what happened and even he unsolicited said "wow this is great work, this is really well built, exactly how it should be done". I had a unique issue regarding the floors of my apartment. The hardwood floors were removed and the concrete subfloor was refinished to act as my primary floor. This resulted in a 1 / 2 inch gap between the lower concrete floor and the higher original baseboards, exterior hallway and bathroom tiles. Master Handymen Inc solved this problem with extraordinary skill. They removed the old baseboards, installed new baseboard throughout the entire apartment, custom built and installed new thresholds and gap fillers. They were very innovative in figuring out how to do this (I had no idea what could be done under the door facing); and finally painted all the trim; all in just one and half days. Master Handymen has far exceeded my expectations, especially considering my unusual requests and even at a very reasonable price. read more

My small bathroom needed remodeling. After getting very high estimates from contractors and also hearing horror stories about inferior work I really did not know what to do. I came across Master Handymen here on Yelp and due to very good reviews I decided to bite the bullet. Work performed: New tile and paint on all walls and shower/bath section, retile floor, installation of new vanity, mirror and light fixture. Pros: The crew were friendly, highly skilled and detail oriented. They easily worked my last minute ideas into the project and also volunteered solutions when I could not decide what to do. They showed up on time, were honest (redoing some small details I didn't even notice) and the work was excellent. The price was fair and below that of other contractor's appraisals. Cons: None! I am very happy with my new bathroom so thank you Gino, Omar, Rego, Jose and the rest of the crew for the great job. Would I have them do any more work? I hired Master Handymen on the recommendation of my real estate agent after another agent. Another agent who showed the condo I eventually bought left the balcony door open in mid-December and a pipe froze, burst and water apparently was 2 inches deep in the place, destroying the hardwood floors. After the closing, Master Handymen were hired to fix the burst pipe and patch up the wall, paint the entire place, and install new bamboo flooring. All in all this was about a ten day job. They arrived on time every day and often stayed past the agreed upon 6pm finish time in order to get the work done as soon as possible. They were courteous, hard-working, extremely professional and the work was impeccable. I had the new floors installed diagonally and they look amazing. The paint job was first class. What's more, an outlet in my bedroom shorted out and they came and fixed that in 15 minutes. They were able to work within my budget alloted from the seller with no compromise on quality. I am extremely satisfied with the work and would definitely recommend them to anyone needing any type of contracting work. read more

Due to the other great reviews, I Contacted Master Handymen to do water damage repair and painting in a bedroom and living room. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. It was easy to schedule an appointment online and all subsequent communication was conveniently completed with Gino via email. Gino scheduled an estimator to come out and view the damage and take pictures. The gentleman who came was prompt and professional. I received an email proposal within 48 hours. Gino provided pricing options with clears explanations and work guarantees. On the scheduled date, Santiago and his assistant arrived on time. They finished the work in 1 day(instead of the proposed 2.5 days.) The finished walls and ceiling look amazing! Santiago was polite and he thoroughly explained the repair process and when they finished the job, they vacuumed the debris and put all furniture back in place. Yes they did! These guys are unreliable. At first Gino was responsive when I sent him an email asking for someone to come out and give me an estimate for my kitchen remodel. Ranu came out - he was nice but gave me some inaccurate information (like saying you cannot install a canned light where there was once a drop light). They promised to send a quote in the next few days. It's been weeks and they never followed up or responded to me. Maybe they do good work, but you need a contractor to be timely and responsive.
