This is one of Ogden's hidden gems. The food is prepared with skill and care in the kitchen right next to the patrons and in full view, and is served as soon as it's been cooked, fresh and hot. No heat lamps here! The sushi rolls are outstanding - full of flavor and no skimping on ingredients. It's a small, intimate place, so it's probably a good idea to leave the kids at home this time. I'm in town for work and found this place on Yelp. Small restaurant just off the main road. Inside and out, the place has a warm welcoming feel (the Studio Ghibli soundtrack playing in the background was really nice). I was looking forward to trying the Katsu curry, but they were out of curry by the time we got there. I was a little disappointed, but my friend and I ordered a bunch of different things to share. Everything we ordered was fantastic! The tempura was delicious and perfectly cooked. The sashimi was fresh and just melted when eaten. The curry dipping sauce for the tempura was great. The owners are wonderfully friendly and charming. I love this place. Only problem with Hanamaru is it's not closer to home. I'll definitely be back before I leave. read more

This was, hands down, the best Japanese cuisine I've had in Utah. The restaurant itself is SUPER tiny with all of four or five tables, plus a few seats at the bar. This place was amazing! They have so many items on the menu that you don't typically find in Japanese restaurants in Utah. They have udon, katsu curry, and my personal favorite katsu donburi. Of course they have sushi as well. Everything here tastes good and very authentic. The owners and cooks are Japanese and they cook really well. They have a different system of service there. They are usually cooking and often call out your table number for you to pick up your meal and take to your table rather than bring it out to you. If you are looking for authentic soul food from Japan, other than Americanized sushi, this is the place to go. There is something on the menu for everyone to try. I was only able to try the udon, chicken katsu curry, and katsu donburi. So far I like them all. The chicken katsu wasn't as fluffy as I remembered it in Japan, although we have very different climates and ingredients hear that can make it difficult to get the exact replica of a food from a different country. Hanamaru provides fantastic cuisine at a reasonable price. The ambiance is also very nice. They have a nice selection of different Japanese food and all I have tried has been delicious. It is definitely one of the better restaurants in Ogden if you're looking for Japanese ambience. They offer a great selection of well prepared Japanese delights including curries, soba noodles and other delicious choices. Their udon is also terrific with generous portions and very tasty soup. You feel like you are dining with a Japanese family! In all, it is really a very nice experience. My only complaint is their parking which can be troublesome. They have a deep lot behind the restaurant and if someone parks in front of your car, you have to have some excellent driving skills to escape. My friends like this place but it is too far from Japan. Good, fresh, flavorful sushi in the middle of an area of town where there's very little good food. This is a small, unpretentious very authentic sushi joint. However they have seven or eight stools and a counter where you can eat in. I ordered a spicy tuna avocado roll and a spicy yellowtail. The rice was cooked perfectly, and the fish obviously fresh. The spicy tuna had a nice smoky kind of spice, that was good and a little bit unusual. Udon was so good. read more

We were out and about on a Thursday evening and weren't sure where to go for dinner with our 15 and 19 year old boys. I happened to remember seeing the restaurant in the past, so we decided to give it a try and were not disappointed one bit. It's very authentic and unique for the area, plus the food was amazing! It's probably the best 'little' restaurant in Ogden! It only has 4 tables inside (plus seating @Sushi Bar) & during the warmer months there's a patio. And it's truly a mom & pop (+ daughter) place......mom's cooking and pop's doing sushi (& daughter is a great hostess/server)! There were three of us & we shared pot stickers (sorry I forgot the proper name) which were very tasty. Then it was on to pork curry, salmon teriyaki, & Vegas roll. All of which were excellent!! My husband and I love to go on Saturday mornings (11am), if you are not there at opening expect to have to wait there are only about 6 tables and 6 seats at the bar, but the wait is worth it! We found this beautiful little place a couple of months ago and have been back weekly (at least!) since. Best sushi we've ever had - favorites are Playgirl and the Red Dragon (spicy!). It's just a small place - we've been seated out on the deck once or twice, but so clean and pretty. The owner built and did the beautiful woodwork himself. Owned by he and his wife and their daughter. We've only tried the sushi and some of the appetizers. Not a huge selection of sushi rolls, but they're all amazing and fresh. Small intimate hidden gem! I love ramen days (Saturdays) their presentation is phenomenal! The service is a little different. You have to get used to it but nothing to complain about.
