I'm a local resident and go there as often as I can. The orders are made fresh at the time of oder in person or by phone. It's always delicious and fresh. The price is unbeatable, no matter what you order. They have an excellent variety from which to choose. Day or night is the same. The service is immediate, unless they're in the back preparing food. It is really hard to find a really good fish and chips place in LA area, and I have tried many. Only this place comes close to my really expensive fish and chips I sampled during my trip to South Africa at a hill/cliff-top restaurant at the Cape of Good Hope. H Salt Esq Fish & Chips is a chain outfit but from my brief discussion with the owner, other than the batter and the brand, each restaurant do their own thing with regard to the frying technique used and the ingredients. Gathered a very interesting history about this chain restaurant from the owner who own operated this place and his another same brand place in Hollywood for over 20 years, and who took our orders - that H Salt Fish & Chips was a British chain brand outfit that basically followed the Beatles during their famed migration into USA shores during the sixties. It was once purchased by KFC decades ago and tried to integrate into its menu in USA but failed due to poor quality control. It was subsequently sold off and the chain now operates only in the Southern California region by different franchisees. This particular place was recommended by a close family friend who was a foodie and while initially suspicious and apprehensive about making the journey from SGV to Carson on a Sunday hot afternoon, the trip was considered as well worth it! The fish used were cod and not some rubbish talipia and you can see its quality once tabled, while the fries were ordinary (wished they had Cajun spices prinkled) but very well fried. The uniqueness of these fish and chips were that you do not see or taste the normal oiliness as from many other I had tasted in LA region. The batter was fluffy and did not give you a over-powering blend jadedness. The fish rectangular sections were easily about 6 to 7 inches long and at least two inches wide - a very good size I must say. The jumbo shrimps initially came misrepresented as like an onion ring because of their round fried shapes - until you bite into it and WOW! The fried zucchinis came neatly arranged on wood skewers almost like a mix style of Japanese and Meditarrean kababs.Truly unique and delicious experience when all dabbed with the supplied cocktail, tartar and malt vinegar sauces! Looks like this H Salt Fish & Chips outfit is truly unique with the above improvisions in its offerings and no wonder it lasted for over 20 years with the same ownership. Notable fact, the owner also owns and operates another same brand name Fish & Chips outfit in Hollywood with the same menu. As for prices, its insanely cheap in comparision with other sub-par places around LA. A two piece fish and chips dish is just slight over 5 bucks, and its special Double Catch with a fried fish strip, fried small shrimps, zucchini and fries at just $5.79. Do not be fooled by appearances! Welcome to the humble and very random city of Carson, where there resides one of the remaining branches of H. Salt Esquire. Upon entering, I saw that there were a lot of extremely affordable and great options (e.g. $5something for a platter of fish, shrimp, chips, and fried zucchini). Probably the cheapest I've seen fish and chips sold. Now, I don't usually care for fish and chips but this fish and chips were pretty darn good. Holy Poseidon. There was something special about this batter. It was super light, flaky, and pretty much tasted as good as it looks. No side of breading here! My godmother's brother told us it was all in the temperature of the oil--too high and the outside would burn before the inside cooked; too low and whatever you were frying would just soak up oil, making it yeah, cooked and all, but also incredibly greasy.  They also served up fried zucchini, and for those who love fried zucchini, get it! It'll remind you why fried zucchini is so lovely. Especially when the zucchini is thick enough to stand up to the batter. Especially when the batter is just a vessel for the pleasure of crunch on a piece of zucchini. I'll take 5. The fish used for the fish and chips is cod--none of that cheap tilapia stuff--and the malt vinegar, cocktail sauce, and tartar sauces were all housemade. I usually dip my fish in tartar sauce out of necessity, but here I wanted to keep dipping it in the delicious tartar and cocktail sauces. The malt vinegar was also not too sour, with a nice hint of sweetness that made it a great accompaniment for the fish. There's just a lot of care put into the food here, and you can taste it!  So in the end, what looked like a decrepit little shop on the corner of a random street in Carson ended up yielding the best fish and chips I've had in LA county to date. Still, despite H. Salt Esquire being a chain, I wouldn't touch the locations outside of Hollywood and Carson, since only those two are managed by this particular owner. There is not much to say about the food at this place. It's the straight forward fish and chips. What there is a lot to say about is who I believe to be the owner. He is an awesome guy. The whole staff is very nice. I usually call my order in when I'm in the neighborhood and by the time I'm there is ready to go. Their home style tartar sauce is excellent. read more

I hate reviewing negatively on family ran businesses but the food they serve here is an atrocity. Ordered fish and jumbo shrimp with fries lunch. Here's the issue. The batter. It has no seasoning, was not fully cooked, and very chewy. The fish itself was fine but again the batter was awful. So you are literally eating some fish dipped in a thick chunk of tasteless batter. Hideous. The fries weren't cooked enough. And again no seasoning, nothing. Sauces given were hot sauce and tartar. I asked for the freshly made ones but for some reason she just gave me the ones in the packets. No side of cole slaw or potato salad. I'm not quite sure how others that reviewed positively felt the food was good. Any decent LA style fish and chips comes lightly seasoned in a Cajun style type of rub. Adding salt and pepper does not count as seasoning unless it's for the fries. I was so upset and still wanted decent fish and chips so ended up throwing it all away and driving 20 mins to the next city to get decent fish and chips. I hope the owners review this and make adjustments to their food. There are no decent fish and chips in Carson, and by making these adjustments, they would do extremely well. read more

Ok I love fish and chip so my go to place is H Salt Fish And Chip so are usually go to the one on Redondo Beach Inn burned so it's close so I go to a H Salt and chips maybe twice a month so because mines burned I went to Carson let me tell you I got in there order my usual look through the door the lady was preparing the shrimps on a trashcan she had a pan but it was sitting on a trashcan another lady was in there she was eating on a trashcan so I'm a picky eater and I will never go back read more

Came in here a few weeks ago while passing thru. The fried fish with the round shrimp with fries was very good what was not good was how stingy they are with condiments. Tarter sauce is not fucking GOLD so come on share with your customers, yes those people who make your business possible. Anyhow owner/operator of this store-you keep your precious tarter sauce-and I will keep my $14.00. I won't be back. You order, pay, then eat! 5 stars cause of the fried, crispy goodness....got the #1 combo with fries, one bambucha (big) fish, one huge, fried circle shrimp (or was it two fried into a circle?).... 5 stars for the hush puppies fried in corn meal, not oily, not greasy, it was crispy.... 1 STAR for these: not enough crab or seafood or shrimp pieces in the hushpuppies. I could make some mo' bettah than here. 1 STAR cause nowhere are napkins to be found, so pa-ke (pidgin speak for STINGY) with the napkins. 1 STAR cause of the manini servings of cocktail sauce, tartar sauce.... We'd been craving fish fry and were in the area so went in at 11ish when they open and already plenty of customers. Ordered the shrimp and fish combo for $5.70. It was excellent! Hot and crispy fried in fresh oil. Never have I seen a shrimp cut to look like an onion ring! My British hubby got the 2 Fish combo and said it was yummy too. He wanted more chips. Since when did this location get so skimpy with their servings?! This was a usual spot for us when in town and come here every few months. The fish were always a good size and the fries with the 15 piece order were generous, but today, it SUCKED. Dinner for 8 worked out with the fish, but it only came with one tray of fries. Felt like a scene out of Hunger Games rationing 6 fries to each person. REALLY?! Granted gas prices are rising, but come on, for $36 couldn't they be generous with their portions like they used to be? Incidentally, H Salt has no way to contact them for feedback on their website, so that should be a hint as to the direction they are heading. read more

I've experienced better at the Gardena location. When I have a hankering for greasy fried fish and chips, I hit up H. Salt. I came to this location in Carson because it is a little closer to where I currently live. The fish pieces are smaller and they don't taste very fresh. New ownership since November, 2011. Previous owner ruined the business with bad attitudes and twice fried food. The new management is warm, family friendly. Food is fresh, battered and made to order. I visited this joint with a friend after a shopping trip. We shared the combo c which has fish, shrimps, oysters. The side order of onion rings came with 5 rings were a big order. I also wanted some zucchini, but i didnt want to have 5 enormous sticks so the owner suggested to mix the order with fried mushrooms. I was very happy with the "vege" combo! We also had 1 order of coleslaw. It was so much food for both of us, that we ended up taking half of it home! read more

This is the best location on the West Coast. The portion sizes are so big. It will bring you back to your childhood when you used to come here with your parents. They have all of them all vinegar, try to sauce, Amber accoutrements necessary to let you enjoy your food. Much better than the nasty Long John Silver's. Highly recommended. Just OK. Ordered the regular dinner that featured three fish and fries. Including the 59 cent credit card fee, my bill came out to $7.80. The fish tasted fine and so did the fries. Nothing special but I definitely know where to come back to when I'm itching for fish and chips. Food is okay - we ordered the captain's combo and the clams and chips. fried up on the spot, which is great. however, the chips tasted like chewy potatoes. we were given 1 small container of malt vinegar b/w the 2 orders, 2 packets of tartar sauce, and a slightly larger container of mystery tangy red sauce that tasted like the sauce you'd get if you were to order chinese-style bbq pork. odd since this is a fish and chips place after all. another surprise was the $.59 credit card transaction fee. isn't that illegal? the cashier just shrugged and giggled when asked. in the end, decent battered fish and horrible chips, STINGY with condiments and the transaction fee put it over the top of places to NOT VISIT AGAIN. read more

I've been searching for some bomb fish n chips since I left Singapore. Those memories of Long John Silvers abroad with the flakey crust not weighed down by over-absorbed oil were dashed when I tried the chain on American soil and was let down. I've continued to search, trying fish n chip places that claim British superiority, but kept getting disappointed... ... Until I had H. Salt Fish & Chips at Carson. Now, I'm pretty health conscious, so I usually don't eat a meal of purely fried foods, but if I were to eat a meal of all fried foods, I'd come all the way to Carson to do it. They fried EVERYTHING perfectly! I had the 7 piece fish combo with fries and zucchini, so it was a great sampler for the 5 of us. The fish had pieces of light flakey batter that crusted the edges, coupled with their house-made tartar sauce (which reminds me of the honey walnut shrimp mayo sauce)--it was everything I've been searching for the past 20 years. I enjoyed mixing their cocktail sauce with the tartar sauce--really that tartar sauce is such a fitting compliment to the fried goods. And the zucchini! It's cut in a size that has the perfect balance of zucchini and batter (some places cut their zucchini too thin such that it kinda disappears after the frying process). Fries are cooked well, but I agree with one of the previous reviews: it'd be even better with some cajun seasoning :9 Next time I'll be sure the try the fried shrimp, as I hear great things about that as well. I'm simply amazed how the fish/zucchini doesn't soak up the oil, as it takes much care and watchfulness to make sure the temperature isn't too cold/hot, and it's my understanding that this shop just run by 2 people. Went to this location because the one in Gardena is closed. Walked in was asked if I called I said no then got a strange look like why didn't I call in. Ordered Captains Combo the difference in this location is in Gardena they would wait until food was done let you know and ask you if you want salt and vinegar added on the fish while its hot out of the fryer. Not at this location they just pack it up and ask if you want condiments so the good salt and vinegar flavor doesn't seep in as well. In Gardena they also would just give you the condiments not ask you if you wanted them. Also the fish at the Gardena location was a much more golden brown color and had a lot more flavor. I used to love that fish in Gardena and was a regular so they treated me well. I guess I just wont be able to get that good fried H. Salt Fish and Chips anymore. read more

Where to begin....Walked into the shop at 750pm and ordered my food from the counter person. Ordered the captains plate (2 fish, 1 jumbo shrimp and chips), an order of clams and a bottle of water. $16 for the lot. During the order she asked me if it was to eat there or takeout . Decided to eat there and paid my bill. Fifteen minutes later the food is ready and when I walk up to the counter she is bagging it up. I told her it was to eat in and she promptly says "we are closing at 830 today so you have to take it to go"..Kinda rude by whatever. I asked her if everything was there and she loaded up the sauces and handed me the bag. Imagine my surprise when I get home and there are no clams in my order. $5 bucks down the drain. Before you ask why I didn't go back and complain.. I drove all the way across Long Beach to get to this restaurant..And I did call but no one would answer the phone. Overall blah experience with this place. You can tell when they don't really care about service when the shrimp cocktail sauce is basically water with a splash of sauce. I am not surprised at the inconsistency of reviews here for this place. There are plenty of 5 star reviews and a lot of 1 stars. Unfortunately my experiences would warrant a 1 star. I have been here twice. The first time was a few months before the COVID pandemic. I ordered two meals of fish and chips and a side of zucchini. I ordered on the phone and the guy was extremely impatient with me. I wanted to know the price of some item and was scolded by the guy as he told me to look at the menu!!! Nice start. Then when I went to pick up the order, there was only one order of fish and chips ready and they had forgotten about the second order. So I had to wait for the second order to be prepared (which wasn't such a big deal). The person at the counter was a lady (while the one who took my order was a gentleman) and she wanted to charge me extra for using my card! That didn't sit well with me so I complained and she waived it (a one time courtesy which got them the one star). Anyways when I got back home, the fish and zucchini were totally disappointing. Zero flavor, dripping in oil and a thick thick batter. I was glad I had ordered the fries which were acceptable. Fast forward to last week. I thought I would give them a second chance so I ordered over the phone. When I went to pick up the order, there was a guy ahead of me and was getting ready to pick up his food. He pulled out his card, the guy at the counter took it, ran it and handed it back to him without a word. It was a small order. The guy picked his food and left. I was next in line and when I produced my card, the guy said it would be an extra 49 cents! I didn't say anything, as there was no use arguing with him but it made me feel really bad. The seafood and fries are made to order. It has no sodium that one can taste. I usually have to sprinkle salt over the seafood and fries. I wish they can use some other seasonings in their batter. came here and ordered the fish and chips, chicken and chips, coleslaw, shrimp in a basket, fried mushrooms and onion rings! overall, my family really enjoyed the meal! i would not say that the food was amazing but for the price, totally worth it! i agree with other reviews when they say that the food was a bit on the bland side. but to that point, accompanied with the condiments the meal really comes together. especially the fish with the tartar and malt vinegar. So if you are English, driving along the coast, and want some traditional fish and chips (chicken and chips for the kids perhaps) then stop here. It's your typical basic chippie but with nice big American portions. They even give you bottles of vinegar for the table, no rationing here. No idea why the low reviews! Man, I remember coming here every Friday during Lent in elementary school. The menu is really simple, I would always get 2 fish + 2 shrimp + chips combo. You gotta buy the sides of cocktail and tartar sauce, and just ask them for extra malt vinegar. The fish pieces are real crunchy but the fries are just a little soggy.
