While the manager (or owner) was very nice and patient when explaining the menu to my grandmother, the bartender was incredibly rude. I stood right in front of her waiting to be served, and she completely ignored me until I spoke up. When I asked about the to-go Hurricanes, she struggled to describe what was essentially an adult Capri-Sun pouch. When I pointed toward a container to clarify, she snapped at me with attitude, "No, that's a wine glass," even though I wasn't pointing anywhere near it. Back a thousand years ago (or so it feels) before Covid / house moves / countless other life interferences, I used to make it to Darrow's fairly regularly. I think today's visit ended a three year drought for me, and despite the now 60-mile round trip, I'll definitely not be leaving it so long again. The quality is unchanged, it's still a must-try. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is only open Thursdays to Sundays these days, and I dropped in on a Thursday for a late lunch amid the Atchafalaya Swamp signs and soundtracked by unobtrusive saxophone jazz covers.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The restaurant wasn't busy, and the service was Louisiana relaxed and super friendly as always. I didn't have to wait long for my food, and the prices here are great for the huge Po'boy sandwiches. I once tried to eat two in a sitting... not easy, as one is a decent meal by itself. I default to the Zeek Po'boy (to the point that I can't comment on the rest of the menu!) with its perfect soft catfish in crunchy breadcrumbs accentuated in both flavor and texture by chunky potato salad. Stopped by on a Thursday afternoon. The set up here is you place your order at the counter and then sit (no server at your table). When I arrived the line was short but a couple was there asking a lot of questions so I waited patiently. The owner walked up to the counter and asked if it was my first time visiting and I said 'no', so he told me to stand behind the couple that were taking their time and being helped by the other employee at the counter. As I was waiting a group of people had walked in, and the owner addressed them as first time visitors and took his time explaining the menu. When he was finished the couple in front of me were not done placing their order, but instead of helping me next, the owner started to take a woman's order who had been standing behind me. This woman told the owner 'she was waiting before me'. The owner looked up at me and did not ask if he could take my order. I thanked the woman and said 'go ahead and order, I'll just wait.' Well after another few minutes of waiting I decided to leave. I did not fit a certain demographic to be treated as a valued customer and If a business does not want my hard earned dollars, so be it. Where to begin...we drove from our home in south Orange County to dine at Darrow's, and it was worth the drive! From the moment we entered the restaurant, we were wrapped up in true kindness and hospitality. I have never felt so genuinely welcomed at a restaurant. Today was my first experience with Cajun food and I was absolutely blown away! I ordered the shrimp po boy with a side of beans and rice. The sandwich bread was so soft and super fresh; I wouldn't be surprised if it had been baked this morning. The shrimp was golden and fried to perfection! Try it with a side of gator sweat sauce, it's obscenely green and ridiculously good. The beans were full of flavor and delicious as was the rice. The catfish po' boy was very dry and criminally flavorless, with no house-made mayo or sauce to add flavor. The red beans and rice tasted like it came out of a can. I mean literally the red beans and rice from Popeyes taste better. I have never been catfished by Yelp, but there's a first time for everything. This place would probably be good for those who did not grow up eating Southern soul food or have never had it before. I rarely write a review the instant I walk in the door after trying a place but this restaurant deserves it. First off, parking looks non existent from the front but there's a big free parking garage behind the restaurant that you can enter off of Avalon or Carson. It's close to the freeway so it's easy to get to. The instant I walked in the door I felt like I was visiting family. All the staff here were genuinely welcoming and friendly and seemed excited I was a first time customer. They were giving me free samples of gumbo and let me try their Hurricane and Punch rum mixers before I ordered. They also explained everything on the menu. I went with the catfish plate with collard greens and "bean balaya" which is a half size portion of red beans and jambalaya so you get to try two sides and it only counts as one! Also a choice of French bread of cornbread. GET THE CORNBREAD. The sample of gumbo they gave me was mind blowing and that was just the broth. Best I've ever had so I will have to get the entree next time. The Rum Punch was so good and not only was it fruit punch flavored but it packed a punch. Was really strong drink. My plate came out smelling like heaven and looked just as good. Every single thing on my plate I was thinking "this is the best I've had". The cornbread was phenomenal. I could not believe how good the cornbread was. It was crunchy on the outside yet moist on the inside and tasted almost like cake. The catfish was also super crunchy yet retained it's moisture. It came with hotsauce, tartar sauce, and "gator sauce" which was a peppery ranch sauce dyed green but the fish was so good I barely used any condiments. All the side dishes were flavor packed and loved them all. When I was about done I ordered the fried chicken breast plate with tater salad and side salad for my wife as take-out. Even with the 25 minute drive home the chicken was still piping hot and crunchy. My wife let me take a bite and it was delicious. I like how they cut up the breast into strips so you got more of the wonderful tasting batter. The potato salad was heavy on the mustard and pickle flavors which was great. Salad had a tasty herbal vinaigrette. Truly loved this place and cannot wait to return. Next time I want to try the gumbo or the soft shell crab po'boy. Both maybe???? read more

If you can judge a place's food by its side dishes, Darrow's wins. I often don't get to try collard greens because they're usually cooked with bacon or pork, which I don't eat. Darrow's has a vegetarian version that's killer. Just a little bit of heat which is delicious. Their potato salad is similarly good. The jambalaya has all chicken meat; it was a little bland on taste compared to the sides, but still good. This was all from takeout, so now I want to drop by the place and eat there. Mr. Norwood came out between courses to explain the history and distinctive culinary culture of Louisiana, and provided the hospitality that makes the city famous." What impressed me the most about Darrow's was how dynamic & passionate Mr. Norwood is on a multipronged mission to bring forth his version of the best & most healthful ingredients and techniques to his Créole cuisine as well as promoting good will and compassion by showing kindness & hospitality to all whom he meets. Conversely, it is up to us to tend to our own gardens to collectively improve the communities that we live in. Darrow's Menu Dégustation has vegetally based fonds de cuisine/broths. 1) Gumbo, which meant okra in a West African language, is like a pot au feu in a light broth which includes the "holy trinity" of Créole Mirepoix (celery, onion, bell pepper), okra and/or smokey Filé/powdered sassafras leaves as thickeners & flavour enhancers. Good addition of puréed chiles added a piquant kick as well as rice, chicken Andouille herbed sausage to add chunky meatiness & a single steamed shrimp as an accent in terms of color & plush texture. 2) Crawfish Étouffée: Loaded with small, fibrous crawfish tail meat in a thickened, browned roux flavoured with possibly the Créole spice mix of Paprika, Cayenne pepper, Garlic, powder Onion, powder Black pepper, White pepper, Dried oregano, basil, thyme. Good Umami broth. Al dente rice. Étoufée means smothered. 3) Collard Greens are braised perfectly to retain green color & not be mushy. Corn bread is cakey, moist, touch spongy, sweet. 4) Red Beans & Rice: Beans adds an earthy, subtle legume funkiness in a thick, creamy gravy. 5) Jambalaya: Rice is cooked with rich tomato sauce & possibly purée along with Mirepoix, chicken Andouille sausage, Créole spice mix, vegetal broth. There is a slight, subtle impression of cheesiness. 6) Grilled Catfish is browned to add a chewy texture with soft moist interior meat. Fried corn meal encrusted Catfish had a rough, graininess while the inside meat was moist. Fried Chicken Leg is thin battered with possibly thyme, black pepper, onion powder. Meat is well fried for a firm yet still moist meatiness. 1-6a) Hurricane: Hurricane is composed of two types of rum, lime juice, orange juice, passion fruit puree, grenadine and simple syrup. It's sweet, fruity and boozy. Darrow's, I'm sure has its own proprietary recipe, but definitely fruity although I couldn't sense passion fruit. 7. Beignet: Yeast proofed dough is fried. The interior air expands so the pastry is hollow with a bit of multi-layering. Reminds me of a heavier, fried Croissant. Sprinkled with white confectioners' sugar. Beignet means bump since it magically fills out into a bump. Distinctive Créole cuisine that is rare to find in California unless you travel to Rayne, Duson, Saint Martinville, and of course, Nouvelle Orléans. 5 stars for Mr. Clark's passion & mission. read more

Everything about this place is special. The minute you walk in you are made to feel at home. They make it known that they don't serve customers, they serve "family" and we felt all the southern hospitality there was to feel. I'm from NOLA originally, and being able to eat my shrimp Po'boy and greens made me feel like I was back in NOLA (Yummm!) The ambience is fun and festive -- and to add to, we drove in for a La Galaxy game for our son's 10th birthday and they went out of their way to make him feel special - beignet and all. The whole restaurant got in on singing to our son. Darrow's has been on my Yelp saved list for months, and since we love gumbo, we finally made it over the weekend--and I'm so glad we did! From the moment we walked in, we felt genuinely welcomed. A kind lady offered us a sample of the gumbo right away, and then a gentleman took our order. He emphasized that inside Darrow's, we're not just customers but family--and he really meant it. He even introduced us to some of the other guests and remembered our first names throughout the entire meal, which is a level of hospitality you don't find often these days. The food? Absolutely unmatched. The gumbo, cornbread, and beignets were all flawless--I've had these dishes at other restaurants before, but nothing compares to what Darrow's serves. Every bite was perfection. We will definitely be back, and I already know I'll be ordering the exact same things again. This place is something special. read more

Shrimp Po Bo, filet gumbo ya ya, and jambalaya are amazing! Peach cobbler is very good. Filling tastes amazing. My only critique is that there is a lot of crust on top and bottom, like a peach pie. Nevertheless I still get some every time I go. I just don't eat the bottom crust. Hurricanes are the best! They are little too sweet for me but they make it keep sweet upon request. read more

I have been craving a po' boy so I had to stop in today. The staff are warm, friendly and accommodating. At about 1:30p there was a good number of people in the restaurant but not too crowded. I loved the decor and art. I ordered the shrimp po' boy, side of jambalaya, fries, cherry cola and beignets. I knew there would be a wait and did not mind it. The Shrimp po' boy has great flavor! I enjoyed the seasoning, batter and the roll was fresh. The jambalaya was also tasty. The fries were hard and seemed to be mixed with an old batch. I went through the box and took out the fresh ones. Cherry Cola was on the flat side. Lastly, beignets were delicious! Overall, strong 8/10! I'll mostly likely be back soon. read more

So amazing I had an amazing experience at this restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious, fresh, and beautifully prepared.
