Been coming here my entire life and Gyro Uno had been top notch along with Romano's (closed down) and old school Pamela's pizza on Steinway. For $9 and the Yelp reputation, thought that it would do little be more than what I experienced. In an area full of greek and Mediterranean spots, this is one of many. Location is in an area where other non Greeks places are moving in. Parking is, as it always is on Astoria Ave, difficult and intractable as the Greek national debt crisis. read more

Often times, I wonder what my life would be without gyros. Then, I just can't go farther than that because it would be impossible. No matter how many fancy Greek dishes you'll make me stuff, nothing can replace the soft spot I have in my heart for gyros, or as they say, pita. I ordered a pork souvlaki to go. God I love those chunks! After 15 minutes of waiting (or more), I almost didn't want my souvlaki anymore. Everyone else was getting theirs and I just wondered if the guy was playing games. They keep a dirty mop in there but other then that the toilet is clean as well as the sink. I am not sure how they are on the toilet paper but I used the last square, thankfully it was a number 1. But the bathroom was not gross except for that darn mop. It's a good place to go if you want cheap eats and a lot of food. You will not wait that long to be served either. If your so eager why they have a B rating on the storefront I recommend going to the rating website to find out. Yup the secret is out. This is my secret spot for a quick gyro fix! It is certainty not the best gyro I ever had, but it is great if you are looking for a quick meal that is fresh and affordable. I visit this area every so often and it has not disappoint. Food: The chicken and lamb gyro are my go to. Both freshly sliced off the rack and served. This time around, the chicken was a big overcooked and we had to pick out a bunch of overly cooked chicken -- but it wasn't worth complaining. It is served with salad, lemon potatoes and pita bread. and of course the tzatziki sauce (extra sauce will cost you $1). Service: Despite the negative reviews here, Ive always experience excellent service. People have to remember that this is your neighborhood mom and pop shop and yes sometimes service is slower (and that is because they are hopefully multi-tasking). It's not the best pizza but it's not the worse. It's NY pizza and it hits a special spot. It's not fancy or hipster, but when you need it, it delivers. Keep it simple, get a cheese pie. Burger had no sauce, 2 halves of a tomato, 2 pieces of lettuce and a slice of semi melted yellow cheese haphazardly stuck to the bun in an off center position so I had to peel it off to reposition it. Wish I could give it no stars. I've been a customer of Gyro Uno for YEARS (practically my whole life) and ever since it switched management recently, it has taken a nose dive. The new owner is HORRIBLE. No customer service and YELLS at you if there's any miscommunication between you and the staff (which there are many because no one listens/speaks good English). He gaslights you and screams at you if you try to resolve any issue. I bet that they will be out of business in a year if he continues on this way. Uno what I really love about NYC? Gyros! NYC becomes a real Gyro destination when uno all the Gyro spots that I do. If uno what's good for you, you should get to NYC asap just to try all the great Gyros. They will change everything uno about Gyros. Uno nothing. Yet. The more uno... What to get: um... maybe a Gyro? What else: ask for easy on the sauce, or the sauce on the side. This is one of the most delicious Gyros in Queens. BZ Grill makes authentic Athens Gyros with Pork, as well as these Chicago kind, so they are the winners. But other than that, you have to go to the Bronx to find a Chicago style Gyro better than the ones served up here at Uno. My favourites in town are at Gyro World on Fordham, and Greek Express a little NW of there. Both absolutely amazing. But other than that, Gyro Uno is one of my favourites. I just urge you to get the sauce on the side, because I'm not sure how crazy I am about their sauce, and they really do smother, cover, drench the Gyro in their sauce. I would have preferred less, so in future I'll ask for that. If you're into Gyros, I highly recommend trying this one. Yelp did not steer me wrong in this case. Cheap, huge, hearty, juicy, enormous, delicious. Just like me. But then if you are on my friends list, it's statistically very likely that Uno all that already. I know Uno what I'm talking about. Even with all the diff choices I have living smack dab in the middle of Little Egypt/largest Greek population outside of Greece, I still find myself constantly going to this establishment when I am yearning for that complete gyro. This is a simple, no frills gyro shop that also does pizza, burgers, et al. However, I'm here for one thing and one thing only - the meatiest gyro sandwich ever sold for five measly bucks. Watch as they slice the gyro meat from the rotating pit and see just how much falls down onto your pita. Also, the amigos here will give you extra white/hot sauce on the side, free of charge, as long as you ask. Best bang for your gyro buck, hands down! read more

Enjoyed the food at this spot, compared to other Greek restaurants I'd def say it's an average 3 stars. The location can be described as a Greek pizza parlor. It's not a formal restaurant, more diner vibes and lots of people coming in to grab and go. If you expect a restaurant, restaurant you'll be disappointed so go in with clear expectations. I ordered a gyro hot plate. The meat was awesome and I constructed my gyro in the sliced up pita bread by layering up the meat, salad, and tzatziki sauce. Inside, Gyro Uno felt like a small coney island restaurant commonly found in Detroit, minus the chili dogs. Gyro Uno had a pretty typical menu with plenty of Greek and American options. I ordered the souvlaki and with in a few minutes I was eating a piping hot pita topped with tomatoes, onions, souvlaki meat, and tzatziki for only $5. The souvlaki meat was a chewy but the tzatziki was absolutely delicious. It was so much better than the "white sauce" street vendors throw on gyros in Manhattan. At this point I really didn't even want my food anymore but it was almost prepared. If these are things that happen out in the open, I don't even want to know what happens behind closed doors. My friend and I did take out and ordered a beef patty and two souvaski gyros. The beef patty was very average but considering this place is known for gyros I wasn't expecting much. They only ended up making one gyro, which was fine because the meat was extremely chewy and fatty. The pita bread was completely soggy from all the sauce that was slathered on. I've been coming here since I was a kid, back in the 80's. I remember liking it then and fast forward 25 years, it's still as good as I remember. I've been staying at an airbnb in my childhood neighborhood of Astoria the last month, and I've eaten here 3 times already. I've ordered both the chicken and beef Souvlaki platter, because Souvlaki was always one of my favorite dishes as a kid and I could never, ever find it in Florida. They are well worth it for about $12, since it includes a nice Greek salad, Tzatziki sauce, fries (or lemon potatoes or rice), pita bread and a Dolmade. Most of the people here are long time locals and seem to know each other. I overheard a few nice conversations. The waitress has been the same one each time I came and she's quiet, but friendly and attentive. I preferred the beef Souvlaki well over the chicken, which lacked some taste. I also loved the lemon potatoes, and will prefer those over the fries (I haven't tried the rice yet). This place only takes cash...so make sure you have enough for the meal and tip. read more
