Had a terrific dinner there this evening. Waiter -- Julio -- gave excellent service and was very friendly. The restaurant offers both small plates and full entrees. I typically detest the concept of small plates -- usually not enough food to share, very expensive, and things come out randomly at the convenience of the kitchen. Gypsy Kitchen was very different. The small plates were generous and they came out in a logical order. And provided a perfect appetizer to the entrees, and were delicious. The entrees were generously portioned and actually composed a complete meal -- protein (chicken in my case), vegetables and spicy condiments. I was not even able to finish the meal because of the bounty, and took a doggy bag home. Mid-way through the entree, a wait staffer came by, said they had an extra order of scallops and wanted to offer them to us. While the scallops looked delicious, we were so full that, sadly, we had to turn her down. But the gesture was amazing. I've never encountered anything like that in any other restaurant. Finally, even the ambiance was pleasant. I generally think that most restaurants are too noisy. The noise level at GK was totally fine -- my dinner companion and I had no trouble having a normal conversation throughout dinner. All in all, a truly wonderful experience. So glad I had the opportunity to eat here while visiting DC. The food was delicious! We started out with smoked duck prosciutto and the smoked flavor lingers in your mouth for a long time. We also ordered: Labneh & flatbread: the flatbread came out puffy and hot. It tasted like a scallion pancake and goes so well with the labneh Charred rapini : the flavor was good but way too salty Crispy chicken briouat: this dish is good with the tomato jam. The closest I can describe it is like a chicken egg roll but better Beef kabab: this dish was a standout. It's spicy but doesn't burn your throat. The flavor is very close to curry Fennel & parsnips: it was ok. I like both but nothing to rave about I also ordered two glasses of Quinta Sardonia (so good had to order another one). Wine goes so well with the food. My friend ordered a David Reynau Syrah and he liked his too. Not only was the food good, our waitress Sam was amazing as well. Big Yikes on this place from me. Food quality is not on par with the prices. If you've gone out on the (George)town to eat food that is balanced in quality by its menu listing, its not the place. I could see the server's eyes glaze over in real-time when I asked for a description of portion sizes. As we waited for the laughably expensive plates, I looked around and noticed in this incredibly loud "restaurant," no one was eating. We were seated between two couples on either side, and we watched as both tables had a manager visit them and apologize on not getting their plates out, they had apparently been forgotten, more than likely due to the vaguely chaotic atmosphere that enveloped the first floor. Our server mostly avoided our table for rest of the night once he clocked he wasnt going to get a massive tip via percentage on the check. Plates came, not well-seasoned and close to warm in temperature. In the end, we were left still hungry and shocked on the price for such little food/service. $7.00 for one glass of water shared by the table. I'll let that speak for itself. Ended up walking a couple doors down for a slice of pizza in a quiet spot. Saved the night. But not by much, because here I am writing this review. It was so bad. It was memorable. read more

Came in on a Sat. evening around 6pm. Lots of empty tables, but we were told there was a 20-30 minute wait (?). So, we sat and ate at the bar right away. The food is pretty good! We had the lamb hummus, green goddess salad, fried chicken, and cauliflower. The salad was fresh and very tasty. The hummus was also good, even though I don't prefer lamb- so that is saying something (to me). If you like lamb, you will probably enjoy that dish! Overall, this was a nice spot on 14th street. Our only complaint is that the bartenders were not really tending bar. I've been here twice, once for brunch and once for dinner, and loved it both times. We enjoyed the food so much we forgot to take any pictures of it! The staff are kind, attentive and warm, and the dishes are delicious. I loved the labneh, hummus and the bread as an appetizer, the dips were so creamy and the delicious fried bread, glistening with zaatar and olive oil, was exceptionally good. The shakshuka was perfectly cooked and the French Toast was great too - warm, toasty and oozing with a delicious sauce and quite filling. The cocktails are really good too, and so well balanced. I ordered the Isla de Moda cocktail (sweet take on the old fashion) every sip is a powerful dessert. Small plates, I tried the Kibbeh and Crispy Cauliflower. Both delicious and fresh with multiple unique flavors in each dish. I look forward to trying their Tirokroketes and Foraged Mushroom toast next time..for sure. Was very pleasantly surprised by this place! Most places on 14th tend to be over hyped, but Gypsy was great. Went for brunch yesterday with a friend and shared a few small plates - kibbeh, flat iron, cobia, rapini, and cauliflower (recommend all of these). I liked the decor and ambiance of the place as it was chic but relaxed and not stuffy at all, and we had a wonderful server, Stephanie, who was attentive and made our experience even more fun. RESTAURANT WEEKERS BEWARE. I want to preface this with I've lived in the DC area for 4 years and have participated in restaurant week every year. I have never run into this issue before. Beware that they require the entire table to participate in restaurant week no exceptions. This is not listed anywhere on their website nor on their menu. We came to celebrate a birthday. Both menu options were provided to us and we were never told to select just one. We had one person at our table who did not want anything on the restaurant week menu and wanted to order off the normal menu. We were told this is not allowed and they even immediately sent over the GM knowing we'd have concerns about this. The GM was patronizing, saying that the reason they couldn't let one of us order off the main menu is due to "timing". He said they participate in restaurant week every year (if you participate ever year, you should anticipate this issue at this point). Our waiter even said that this is ongoing issue they've had with several guests (then address the issue head on???) When we said that timing didn't matter to us he said it was still not possible but we could all order the restaurant week menu and then order additional plates off the main menu. In the end we had to pay an additional $55 to make them happy so our guest could order what she actually wanted. A giant scam. read more

This is my second time here and it never seizes to impress me! Delicious food, great ambiance and amazing service. Our server Jenny was absolutely great. She was super attentive and very insightful of the menu options and customer favorites. We ordered the hummus and flat bread to start - you cannot go without trying this. The naan is to die for! Has a little big of garlicky spices making it so much more flavorful not that the hummus needs anymore but they compliment each other perfectly. We then ordered the crispy cauliflower, Gambas (shrimp), beef kebab, and Tirokroketes (cheese balls). We then ordered the Ribeye to end off the night. Everything was delicious. The couscous pides with the beef kebabs is my personal favorite! I can't get over it! I can't forget about the drinks. We had ghosted and deja vu and both were super yummy! Visiting DC and found this restaurant on Yelp within walking distance of our AirB&B so we decided to try it out. Brought our 2 young kids and they were extremely accommodating. Menu option full of small plates had us drooling - everything looked amazing. We ordered 8 small plate items (the Chicken Kapama was our kids' fav, Tirokroketes were a close second, and my fav was the beef kebabs which were a tad spicy for kiddos). Delicious food all around. Vibe: From outside, the restaurant seems as though it'll be small and cramped, but they've managed to spread out the seating in such a way that you aren't joining in on another's table conservation involuntarily. The decor is also beautiful. Service: The hostess set a high bar when we walked in. While we didn't get our rooftop preference that we indicated in our reservation, she was accommodating when I asked her if I could choose our own seating because I was anxious about being too close to another table. She graciously let me pick and I was happily surprised. It's not often that you meet hostesses who aren't dismissive and seemingly bored. Our waiter was also excellent and very engaging. I asked him for drink AND small plate recommendations, and they were all perfection. Food: It couldn't have been better--truly. Made a reservation to dine here before attending a concert next door over the weekend. We happened upon this place while conducting a Yelp search of the best places in the area. We were greeted promptly and sat upstairs on the Patio. It was a lovely, quaint area. The roof was closed when we arrived, but after a few minutes they opened it up, which definitely added to the ambiance. I started out with a Deja Vu which I thought was a very tasty drink. The table shared the Hummus and Flatbread which I thought was a must try. The hummus is house made, and honestly one of the best preparations I've ever tried. Labneh and Flatbread wasn't very appealing to me..the flatbread is delicious, the Labneh was basic. The crispy Cauliflower was fries very lightly which I appreciated and the caper berry and relish that accompanied it was the perfect balance. Next were the Tirokroketes which were too cheesy and definitely forgettable. The Village Salad was by far the most simplistic with the ingredients, but definitely my favorite dish. The final dish was the Beef Kebab with Lebanese Couscous..the temperature on the dish was lukewarm on arrival and not to my preference, but overall the components together were very well done. The cocktails were beautiful and tasty. We shared a majority of the small plates instead of opting for the big meals and enjoyed everything. The bread was fluffy and delicious, the cauliflower was well balanced and indulgent and the Gambas (shrimp) were perfectly cooked. "The most disappointed meal we've had in DC" was the quote of the evening unfortunately. We had a reservation for 5pm. Arrived a few min early was told to wait 10 min until our 5pm reservation. 40 minutes goes by and nothing. No word from the hostess no update or anything. Baffling bc every table was empty..? Everyone in the lobby was confused as to why no one was being acknowledged. Finally right before giving up and going across the street I asked the hostess if there was an update on our table. She said she had to go organize something then left. She came back and said our table was ready. So if I didn't go up and ask how much longer would we have waited for our reservation in an empty house? Then we're told the happy hour menu is only available in the bar and you can't order it in the main dining room that's literally 10 feet away...what? Another couple across from us was so confused. A.) It's dumb to have happy hour restricted to one portion of the restaurant B.) This would have been good info for our host to tell us as an option instead of wondering if our reservation was going to be honored for 40 minutes. Okay whatever as long as the food is great it can erase all the weirdness. We ordered several small plates (no issues with the portion sizes we knew what we were getting) but sadly the food was so so not as good as it looked. It was really disappointing to have the food look so good but fall so flat on flavor. Jamon Serrano tastes like it was wrapped in plastic. Was not standout at all we would never go back. $75 (with 20% tip) for 4 small plates that tasted mediocre. DC food tax plus Gypsy Kitchen 3% service charge brings it to 13% before even tipping!? Our sever was great he was the only good part of the evening. Everything else was disappointing especially for the price.
