Visited DC for the weekend ; and Gypsy Kitchen was advertised via Yelp multiple 'vegetarian options ' Had reservations for dinner at 930pm and to my surprise establishment was jam packed. Despite having reservations there was a 20 minute wait to be seated. As per host there weren't any tables of 2 available ; I spotted multiple empty tables. To be honest , was nervous for my dinning experience. Was greeted immediately by waitress and order was placed. Decided to order small plates ; and share it amongst the table. Everything was freshly prepared ; honestly the best hummus I had in a while. The mushroom toast was delicious; however the egg to runny. The chicken kapama was made to perfection; just missing a little spice. Would definitely Revisit. Didn't get a chance to take pics read more

Best Mediterranean food in DC. Gypsy kitchen is the perfect small plates restaurant for date night or a meal with friends. While the interior is bustling, the servers are attentive, but the rooftop would be my recommendation. The drinks are tasty and pretty and the food itself is delicious (I don't know how they get their pita so soft!) And while it tends to be busy, it's never hard to get a reservation if you look a few days in advance. read more

Love the vibe of gypsy kitchen. I have generally come for happy hour and light bites. Food wise, my favorite dish is the lamb topped hummus. The hummus is super creamy and the lamb gal apart tender. If you have a bit of a sweet tooth like I do try the burnt cheesecake! read more

Joined a friend for cocktail hour. The hummus and pita were perfection but the inventive cocktails were the prize! Fun spritzers, perfect for Spring, were all we needed to raise a glass and enjoy a couple of hours catching up at the bar. The bartender was helpful, friendly and kept our glasses full. Came here for brunch on Saturday, Easter weekend. Parking is a challenge on street, you are on your own. No waiting when we arrived for 11 am resv. We had option of street dining or inside, and settled on a nice window table. We ordered squash and lentil soup, mahmura humus, crispy cauliflower, and hot chicken sandwich. Food was excellent! This place was perfect. We sat on the rooftop and it was an absolute delight. This is a tapas style meal and we were full before we knew it. I highly recommend the Tirokroketes, Hummus bil Lahme, green pea falafel, and mushroom toast to eat. We also ordered the chilled summer melon but it was a little awkward to share. All were great portions and savory to the last bite. For drinks, we all ordered different cocktails. I can confirm my friends and I loved the hilltern and smokeshow. The whiskey drinker of the group enjoyed the madam madre. The service was so helpful, kind, down to earth, and attentive. I will def visit again while in DC. Great area to walk around afterward with a series of bars along the street. About a mile away from the metro but you can't tell because the walk is so pleasant. read more

This restaurant is in the former Masa 14 space. The downstairs is warm, the upstairs has a more lively bar scene with an open roof deck (in warm weather). We went last night and ordered way too much food. We started with the medium meat/cheese board, with jamón serrano, chorizo, salchichón, tetilla, manchego, and barrel-aged feta. All three of those cheeses were amazing; the meats were good but I'm more of a cheese person. My husband had a generously-poured glass of Pinot Noir and I had the canelita "mocktail". My drink had a hint of cinnamon, which surprised me and made my drink pretty exceptional. Next we ordered a bunch of small plates -- labneh and flatbread (generous and savory), gambas, falafel, tirokroketes (creamy cheesy crispy balls in a tomato sauce), and crispy cauliflower (wasn't as crisp as I imagined but still good). We ordered too much but really wanted to try all of these. They were all delicious but honestly my stomach was so full after the meat and cheese board that I wasn't fully tasting everything. (My husband cleaned up the table; he was very impressed with the dishes.) What an overall delightful dining experience. Will come back again and recommend to others. read more

Make a reservation immediately!! Trust me, you will not be disappointed. Went here last night and what drew me here was the menu and the fusion of mediterreanean delights. These are small plates (tapas), but they also offer large plates as well. We had the Smoked Duck Prosciutto (cured with orange & turkish coffee), domestic duck with the 12-Month Manchego cheese (firm, spanish sheeps milk). The mix of flavors is a circus in your mouth!!! We ordered the Crispy Cauliflower (lemon tahina, dried fruit relish, caper berry, pistachio), Green Goddess (heirloom lettuce, asparagus, peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, artichoke, feta, pistachio, radish), and Falafel. The food was not too much in amount, but for 2 ppl more than enough. I will tell you, each plate was well presented, and each bite tickled my taste buds......pretty darn tantalizing!! The service was outstanding in that our waiter made solid recommendations, seemed interested in our dining experience, and suggested signature cocktails. This place is laid back with a cool & chill vibe, if ya looking for a spot in the summer on a warm night, this the spot. We ate on the rooftop outside........best place in the house IMHO. THE VIBEEESSSS ARE IMMACULATE! And of course the food is so great. Get the labneh, tzatziki, gambas, and broccoli rabe. Fried cauliflower is also great (if you couldn't tell, I'm pescatarian). Super fun for 20-30 year olds hanging with friends or for a date -- great music, cute interior, good cocktails! Prices are normal for DC so don't be alarmed, esp since this is a new place. Awesome happy hour and amazing bites! My friends and I got the espresso martini, old fashioned, and the botanist and all of them were fantastic. For food, we got the hummus and pita (yum), the beef kabob, the fish, the cauliflower, and the potatoes. Potatoes and cauliflower were not phenomenal but the fish was great! You know it was an amazing meal when you completely forget to take photos and just live in the moment, enjoying some phenomenal food. I had heard about this place a few times before and was excited to try it with a friend, and it certainly did not disappoint. We started with the hummus and the cauliflower. The hummus and pita were both clearly made in house and were so good. The cauliflower wasn't quite what I was expecting, being more fried than roasted, but it totally worked with the sauce and everything it was paired with. We also ordered the beef kabob and the lamb ribs/crispy lamb belly. All the flavors worked so well together, especially paired with a pinot noir. We were both plenty full after 4 dishes, but I will have to be back to try more. This seemed like the type of place you can't go wrong with in terms of what you order. Can't wait to try out more of the items, and come back for brunch! read more

We got the small board with the duck prosciutto, rosemary lamb, jamon serrano, manchego, and garrotxa. Everything was very interesting and tasty. I recommend the duck prosciutto for the adventurous and the jamon Serrano is as delicious as it was in Spain. Really like the tenderness of the steak for the beef kebabs. The falafel was my least favorite, it reminded me of the peas in cup noodles. Our server was amazing so I definitely recommend it read more

Tapas style mediterranean food is great for a group of friends wanting to share and try a lot of different dishes. The service is really hit or miss I've been here a couple times and sometimes they are so on top of it and accommodating and other times I've had to flag them down to put in an order. Excellent find on 14h st after a happy hour nearby. The inside is beautiful but we ate outside on a perfect evening. The server was excellent. Very friendly and knowledgeable. We tried four things - chicken in phyllo, hummus, flank steak(?), and cauliflower. Everything was excellent. The pita that came with the hummus was warm and savory. The beef was so tender and it's creamy couscous was spicy. The tomato jam that accompanied the phyllo wrapped chicken was sweet and delicious. That cauliflower though! Tempura battered and covered with a tomato compote, I think. Large caper berries and a fabulous sauce. It was fried perfectly- hot, crispy and delicate. I would go back for a plate of this cauliflower anytime. read more

Amazing food, cocktails, and service. We ordered the tirokroketes (our fav!), crispy cauliflower, gambas, and crispy chicken briouat and loved everything. The tapas portions were perfect for two. We also ordered the "burnt" Basque cheesecake for dessert. It was a different take on cheesecake and tasted more like custard, but still satisfying. But even more impressive than the food was their customer service. On my walk to the restaurant, my strappy heels broke (the literal worst during a night out). I asked our server for tape to try to MacGyver the situation, but instead, the manager Amir came to our table and offered to try to fix my shoe in the back. He went above and beyond with the gesture, and with a little glue/staple/duck tape, I was able to comfortably walk with my strappy heels the rest of the night. I'll definitely be returning - hopefully, next time I'll be lucky enough to score a coveted rooftop table. read more

The average price per person, depending on drinks, is between $35-$45.

The serving size of the dishes I ordered were medium to small. The service was far less satisfactory than food. I tried the following dishes: 1. Complimentary pita: ~40g per piece. Not salty and paired well with the other dishes. Definitely get some! 2. Lahmacun: The lamb+beef mixture was tasty. It came with 4 pieces. 3. Branzino: ~6oz. The fish was grilled to perfection; juciy tender, and the skin was nicely charred. It was served with freh parsley and seasoned grilled tomato (salt+oregano I think). 4. Imam Bayildi: Half of an eggplant topped with sauteed onions and tomatoes. While itself was pretty normal, it went so well with the Ottoman rice. 5. Ottoman Rice: The true highlight of all the dishes I tried! It was basically Basimati rice cooked with dried apricots, raisins, almonds & pine nuts mix, and seasoned with black currant. Overall it was warm, earthy and lightly smoky. The apricot slices added some delightful sweetness and juiciness to the dish. Should pair well with Labneh, chicken and seafood. But to be honest, I can simply eat this stuff along for a whole meal! 6. Tabbouleh: They went against the traditional recipe by substituting the bulgur with quinoa and added some pomegranate arils. I liked the special texture of quinoa. The sweetness of pomegrante arils also enriched the flavors. However, I had to constantly spit the seeds when enjoying the salad. 7. Kofte: Adana style ground beef patties. Just like what I make at home haha! I ordered it as an add-on to my salad at lunchtime. It came with only 2 pieces which weighed no more than 3oz in total... Despite the delicious food, service was disappointing. The first time, the dinner, was Okay. While my food came out slowly, at least my server was aware of it and asked me how I liked the dishes. The second time, the lunch, was horrible. Even before I was seated, my server made me feel that he was reluctant to serve me, and emphasized that I had to order asap. "Luckily", I had already decided what to order. After I got my dishes, no one in the restaurant asked me if the food was Okay. And at the check, my bill was thrown onto my table. In comparison, the two ladies dining next to me came even after I started eating, but were greeted warmly and were given lots of time to decide what to order; not to mention that the staff gave them lots of suggestions, asked about their dining experience, and even chatted with them about sightseeing in DC, etc. Such discrimitory treatment is really unacceptable.

Was warmly greeted, seated, and given an overview of the menu and brunch package options; decided to opt-out of the bottomless drinks, which had an alcoholic (mimosas and Bloody Marys) and NA (juices, sodas, drip coffee and black tea), as I wanted to try their more speciality coffee and tea. The drinks I ordered were the Turkish coffee, Levantine-style tea and digestive tea. All were quite solid. The Turkish coffee was as robust as espresso, yet not overwhelmingly bitter and slightly sweetened. The Levantine tea was a smooth black tea with natural sweetness and layered with a mint steep and floral notes of hibiscus, and rose petal. The digestive was more herbaceous with fennel and pomegranate zest, in addition to a steep of spearmint. The food was more hit-or-miss. On one hand, the meat and seafood was all very delicious and well-made. The braised lamb shank is their speciality, and well-deserved, as it's moist, savory and tender. The short rib similarly so, and the chicken casserole, lamb biajeen, Adana kebab and steamed lavraki (sea bass) were all similarly flavorful. On the other hand, the sides and mezze options were more mixed; the dolmas and fresh bites cheese with za'atar/nuts were delightful, however, the borek, cheeses, and some of the dips tasted reheated and/or not super fresh, the Brussels sprouts were quite scorched, and the savory salmon waffles were bone dry and flavorless. The French onion soup had the right flavor profile, but not the intensity; it tasted watered-down and even looked it, due to the noticeable oil blebs on the surface. Dessert was similar; the melon and fruits were fresh enough, the yogurt bar was quality, the kadayif nutty with the sweetness balanced, and the layali lubnan was intoxicatingly tasty, but many of the baked goods looked rather packaged and the fondue station was mediocre. The staff, however, were extremely friendly (my special regards to Mia, she's a great conversationalist and a sweetheart!). They answered all my questions, and one of the bartenders even gave me half a lemon to zuzh up my tea with. As I said at the start, more 3.5 stars than 3 stars. The core of their offerings are all quality, so I can't quite dock them a full two stars for the food quality because they had buffets aren't usually renown for said quality. You really can't expect perfection from AYCE, even though I naturally encourage the management to avoid sourcing pre-made items from Sysco if possible. The friendly staff and eloquent Eastern Mediterranean ambiance allows me to still say I enjoyed this experience, and may be back for dinner in the future.

For the drinks: for a Turkish/Greek restaurant I was surprised that wines from those countries were not available by the glass. Alas, there was no Greek wine to be had, and the Turkish wine could be had only if you were prepared to cough up $90 for a bottle. As I was the only wine drinker in the group, that was not going to happen. Next time I might go for a mocktail. The fermented carrot juice was funky and mystical and perhaps the best thing we had all night, beating out even those brussels sprouts.

At some point, since the menu heavily leans towards rich and decadent, its better to plan around that. On Sunday, a few friends and I visited Gypsy Kitchen before attending a concert at The Atlantis, which is just a 15-minute walk away. We arrived around 5 PM, so the restaurant wasn't too crowded, and we were seated immediately. Their menu is tapas-style, so it's best to order several small dishes and perhaps one main dish for a group of 3-4 people. Service & Food Timing // Although we were able to place our order quickly, our server rarely checked in on us, which was surprising given the relatively light crowd. Regarding the food, we ordered everything at once as suggested. The first few items arrived promptly, but there were significant delays between subsequent dishes, to the point where we had forgotten about some of the items we had ordered. Food: Patatas Bravas //These were cooked fairly well, though we expected them to be a bit crispier. The spicy tomato sauce had a smoky flavor that was somewhat unusual but still enjoyable. Halloumi // This was one of the highlights of our meal. The hot honey, plums, and serrano paired beautifully with the halloumi, creating a delightful combination of flavors. Crispy Cauliflower // This dish was decent, though it could have been crispier. The fruit relish it came with was a nice touch and added a pleasant sweetness. Pork Belly // This dish was disappointing. The pork belly lacked flavor and was tough to eat. The spiced carrot puree was the only redeeming element, but overall, I wouldn't recommend this dish. Labneh // Unfortunately, this dish was quite bland. It would benefit from more seasoning and better incorporation of the toppings to enhance the flavor. (This did come with Pita bread and that was delightful) Half Chicken // This dish was another letdown. It was dry and lacked flavor. Additionally, it was served whole without being cut into pieces, and we were only provided with butter knives, making it difficult to eat. Our experience at Gypsy Kitchen was underwhelming. Every time I find myself in Washington, DC, there's one place that never fails to impress me--Gypsy Kitchen DC. Not only is their food consistently exceptional, but their commitment to outstanding service truly sets them apart. During my most recent visit, they went above and beyond to ensure that our dining experience was nothing short of extraordinary, despite calling ahead and learning that the kitchen would be closing in just 30 minutes. This remarkable level of dedication further solidified Gypsy Kitchen DC as one of my all-time favorite restaurants in the city. During my recent visit, we started with the Hummus and Flatbread--a choice that left us utterly satisfied. The Flatbread arrived hot and fresh, straight out of the oven, boasting a delightful texture and enticing aroma. Paired with the freshly made Hummus, it was a match made in culinary heaven. The Hummus itself was a harmonious blend of fresh ingredients, perfectly balanced spices, and a creamy texture that was simply irresistible. We also decided to try the Aleppo Spiced Fried Chicken, and it proved to be an excellent choice. The lightly breaded chicken was fried to perfection, delivering a satisfying crunch with every bite. The dish complemented the Hummus splendidly, creating a tantalizing combination of flavors. While the Seared Halloumi had room for improvement, as the pieces were on the smaller side and could have benefited from more robust seasoning, it did not dampen our overall experience. In fact, the Flatbread, Hummus, and Aleppo Spiced Fried Chicken were so delightful that we couldn't resist ordering them twice to share among our group. Gypsy Kitchen DC remains firmly at the top of my list as one of the finest restaurants in DC. I continue to highly recommend this culinary haven to both locals and visitors alike.
