If you blink driving down Main Street, you might drive right by this place. I highly recommend you don't. We were exceptionally impressed with Grill 309. While traveling we always try to stop at a local joint rather than a big chain. We found Grill 309 on Yelp and found ourselves walking into a hole in the wall type bar. When I first saw the menu I was amazed at the huge variety of food for such a small place. I was further impressed by the quality of the (admittedly way too much) food that we ordered. Mehhh....we went to this place after seeing their rating but I personally wasn't a fan. The food was ok nothing out of the ordinary. We got drinks during happy house so most of them just tasted like sugar... no alcohol. But the staff and bartender were all very nice and tried to help out as much as they could. I adore Grill 309 and have been coming here for years. The outdoor patio seating makes it a must stop place in Culpeper. The brunch is served until 3 on weekends so I can sleep in and still catch a breakfast meal. The service can be slow, but I sit outside and come when it's busy. The vibes are fun and toes the line between bar and family restaurant. It's such a fun place to grab an appetizer and drink on a sunny afternoon or to enjoy a dinner date. Was excited for the poutine, but it was extremely disappointing. It is NOT as pictured in the old reviews! There are almost no cheese curds and it was wildly over salted. The grilled Cheeseburger was novel and tasted great. The brownie was nothing special and obviously microwaved (hot center plate, etc). Food was not good at all we had the Philly and the Italian both were very small and sub pare, The drinks we order where never filled or asked about. Grill 309 has THE BEST sangria I think I've ever had! Although that's not normally how I would start off a review, I needed to put that fact front and center. The drink is super refreshing and not overly sweet unlike many sangrias. The menu features a wide variety of other drinks as well, and of course food. I'm also happy that they have vegetarian options, such as the impossible burger. Of course that is my go to, and they cook it well here. You also don't want to mess they are delicious fried favorites, such as the onion rings, fries, and sweet potato fries. Sweet potato fries are served with a dipping sauce that is sweet and sticky, making it a delicious sweet and salty side dish! There's something for everyone here, and I look forward to coming back (and getting that sangria!) read more

This a very ordinary diner that is pretending to be a grille. I had the onion soup which was the soup of the day. It was bland and the onions were still white. Rather than covering the bowl, the cheese was on a piece of toast placed in the soup. This was clever, but the cheese was not the usual that you would expect on onion soup. The onion rings are very thick, but I ordered them extra crispy so they were pretty good. My husband had a Greek salad which he said was good but the side of chicken, which cost four dollars, was meagre. He enjoyed the hot peppers and other goodies in the salad. The salad was in a small overflowing bowl which would have been easier to eat in a larger salad bowl. He said the dressing was excellent. This is an average diner with servers who are very attentive, but a little officious. I would say this is a place for a quick bite or a family meal. The diner seemed very family friendly. Came here after a hiking trip with a friend. We decided to check this place out because the menu looked good and this place had decent reviews. We both decided to get burgers and tater tots. My friend go the build-your-own burger and I got the Patty Melt. B-Y-O burger was confusing was the menu just listed the burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle so we weren't sure what you were supposed to be adding to it. Burgers were decent since we were both hungry. My friend ordered medium rare and I ordered medium well but both burgers came out the same. The tater tots were nice a crispy though. My friend also got some red wine but it was warm (not room temp) and we could tell it had been open for a bit. Would not recommend. read more

I want to like this local restaurant. The location is great and the menu has a nice selection but the food just isn't great. I have been to this restaurant a handful of times and have ordered the chicken and waffles, the eggs Benedict, the shrimp tacos (which was probably the best thing I've eaten there), poutine, and most recently the hot Italian. My hot Italian had the fattiest meats in it, I'm talking big chunks of fat that it was a bit disgusting. I don't know if they are using low quality products or what but the ham in my eggs Benedict was equally gross and the chicken used in the chicken and waffles had gross spots in it too. What's embarrassing is when I bring friends and their meals aren't great either. Also, I don't recommend eating here in the winter. There is no vestibule area and every time the door opens a huge blast of cold air comes in and it doesn't matter where you sit, it's cold! Nope, I've given this place so many chances but I'm calling it quits. Service was friendly but slow as it appeared he was the only one working on a very busy morning. read more

We wanted to check out a new restaurant in Culpeper and found this one, thanks to Yelp! And thanks for being open on Memorial Day! We called ahead and were able to make reservation, but it wasn't crowded when we arrived. It's small, so I can appreciate that they take reservations. Atmosphere (4/5): not bad for a bar/diner. We had a nice booth next to the window. Service (3/5): Our server got busy waiting on large groups that came in, so things were a bit slow. Food (5/5): Food was amazing! The batter fried chicken and waffles were some of the best I've ever had!! The chicken breast was beer battered and had cheese and BACON on it (I skipped the egg that was offered) and got a side of tater tots! The waffle was spot on - crispy on the outside, soft inside and slightly sweet- delicious!! Hubby got the Hot Italian but wasn't too impressed. 7/31/2021: seated promptly (we chose outside in the "beer garden"). Beverage order taken quickly and menus delivered. We are veterans of this place so we didn't need recs on food (plus we've NEVER had anything "bad" here!!). We DID notice a new app however and couldn't wait to try it! We order the new pirogi app with beer cheese and were pleasantly surprised to find that they were lightly fried, not soaked in oil as you might find in some places. They were drizzle the truffle oil and just have the Parmesan cheese there was also a small crack a beer cheese on the side for dipping. Not only were the pierogies just lightly crisp and fried perfection, but the beer cheese with hot slightly salty and very delicious. The stuffing of the pierogi was a mash potato consistency full of flavor and just the right amount of salt. We had just a tiny bit of beer cheese left over so I scooped up some of the lettuce used for "bedding" and had myself a couple mouthfuls of "salad". Since we are headed somewhere after dinner, we offered to share a sandwich. I've had it before but my husband hasn't so I couldn't deny him the opportunity to enjoy the beer cheese chicken sandwich! It's hand breaded and a light batter and fry to perfection. My husband exclaimed that the chicken alone was delicious, as he had not even enjoyed a bite of the full sandwich yet. The chicken hung off the edge of the freshly baked pretzel bun by at least 40%! The bacon was crispy and generous while the beer cheese in the crock was nearly full. We opted for the sweet potato fry upgrade instead of housemaid chips that you can't go wrong with those either. Service was friendly & prompt as always. See y'all soon! read more

I am new to town and my co-workers recommended Grill 309. I had to have the spicy pineapple margarita. Theirs had a slight heat, but isn't too spicy. I tried one of their daily specials (Tex-mex day)and it tasted great and the portion was definitely plentiful. You really couldn't beat the prices, especially with as expensive as food has gotten. Our AirBnB host recommended Grill 309 during our stay near Culpeper. We loved it so much that we came twice- once for dinner, once for breakfast. We both enjoyed our dinners- I had a yummy fried chicken sandwich on a pretzel bun, while my husband enjoyed his "Greek Burger" which featured a layer of gyro meat (what's so wrong about topping meat with meat?). Anyway, he loved it even if his arteries did not. We returned a few days later for brunch. Honestly, my Greek Omelet was one of the best omelets I've had. I'm not a big egg eater, so often leave a portion of my omelet uneaten. Not so here. The egg was closer to a crepe, and it was filled to perfection. My spicy Bloody Mary was the perfect accompaniment. My husband felt the same about his Western Omelet.... and his pineapple Mimosa. And the best part? We were able to bring our Border Collie to the brunch with us. It was just warm enough to sit on their patio. They brought him water and lots of love.
