Food, delicious. Ambiance, nice. Service, disappointing. I went with friends for dinner and walking in I was delightfully surprised. I liked the look and feel of the place. I had the Cobb salad and it was tasty and huge. Friends had the patty melt, the gyro feta burger, and a build your own burger. Everything was very tasty and portions were not to big but not to small. My disappointment is with the server. She set the menus down and then immediately asked if we were ready to order. Umm, no. She said she'd give us a couple minutes to look them over and then disappeared for 10. We had to ask another server to take our drink order and then she finally showed up. When the food came out, it came out one dish at a time. Why? We were sitting at a four top table, right in front of the bar, plenary of room to maneuver. However, she always brought the food to one side of the table and then stretched across two of us to give the food to the other side of the table. Why? We stopped into Grill 309 on a Wednesday night and downtown Culpeper was busy. We circled the block and found close free parking on a side street next to Grill 309. The interior gives upscale sports bar vibes. We chose a high top table toward the back of the restaurant. Our server ended up being the bartender too. They had $5 margaritas that night so I ordered one and we started with an order of their pierogies. There were four and they were served over a smear of their beer cheese. There were ok. I wanted more seasoning in the filling itself. It was pretty bland. For my entree I got their hot dog with chili and cheese with their housemade chips. I was pleasantly surprised to see a cheese sauce on the dog. It was pretty good. Some of the chips were pretty overcooked. The service brought this score down. I think the bartender was busy but plenty of servers were available. There was a lot of conversation at the bar. We probably should have just sat there. We missed out on drink refills, having our order taken promptly, and getting the check when we were ready to leave. Overall there were a lot of interesting things on the menu. I came back today with my family. I had a good time but lunch missed the mark. The Artichoke dip was shocking when it came out. It was a cup of artichokes with some type of goo and sour cream, and red onions. I wasn't a fan. I dont understand this whole Pita chip fascination in Culpeper either. I dont like it. I ordered fish taco with pepper jack cheese, guacamole and coleslaw. I didnt know that the pepper jack would come pre-melted, onto my corn tortilla and the Guacamole and coleslaw also on the taco.. Thought guacamole and coleslaw would be side separate on the plate. Including the two small peices of mushy fish, everything was one note. No texture at all. After visiting the cider lab in summer duck, we needed to grab a late lunch somewhere. We never visit the cute town of Culpepper and ultimately decided to visit Grill 309 based off of recent reviews. We were immediately greeted and told to sit wherever we like. We chose our seat, we were brought waters, but waited a little bit longer than we would have liked for someone to come and take our order. We were starving as we had not eaten breakfast yet. We decided on the Spinach and Artichoke dip for an appetizer, the Steak Wrap, and Build your own Burger. The spinach and artichoke dip tasted decent but wasn't as creamy and flavorful as I would have hoped it would be. However, I did love the fried pita chips they served it with. To be honest... I would eat those just by themselves. My boyfriend thought the steak wrap was delicious. There was a favorable about of steak, had great flavor, and the crunch of the green veggies they put in the wrap was a nice addition. My burger was tasty. I did have to send back my bun due to something being stuck to it but they immediately addressed the issue and compensated me by taking off the one IPA I ordered. The house made French fries stole the show! They are cut and made in house and were amazing. Overall we enjoyed the local environment and appreciated the highlights of the meal. read more

Here's a huge pet peeve of mine. When I order food for take out and I'm in the building doing it. I truly expect the establishment to check that my order is correct. Especially if there are hardly any customers. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger but there was no bacon. And wanted the brava potatoes but seriously look at the small amount, I mean come on they're potatoes. The chicken wings my partner ordered also tasted weird definitely not good and that for $30. The flavors harmonized beautifully, though I must note the bread-to-meat ratio was rather heavy-handed--an architectural imbalance that somewhat diminished an otherwise inspired creation. My dear wife's Italian sub featured quality ingredients, though the cured meats carried a salinity that, shall we say, announced its presence with rather too much enthusiasm. I daresay the apple crumb cake transcended mere dessert to become something of a revelatory experience. A perfect 10, without question. The delicate interplay of warm spices, cinnamon and buttery crumb achieved that rare balance of sophistication and comfort that defines the finest Southern baking traditions. We went to Grill 309 last Saturday with our son and his family. We had some appetizers and I had the chicken wings and they were delicious even with medium heat. They could have been hotter which I would recommend. I got extra heat at a restaurant in Virginia Beach and they were so hot I couldn't eat them so I'm reluctant to do that again but in this case I think it would be fine. I had the patty melt and it was delicious. The two children completed their meals and were very happy with it. Service was excellent and the ambiance was great although alittle noisy once the restaurant became 100% occupied. read more

I wasn't impressed with their service or food. I ordered a lavender lemonade which came from the bar. I watched the bar tender attend to 3 people at the bar on a Wednesday early afternoon. It took her 20 minutes to make my drink. It took me getting the attention of our waitress to get her to check on the drink. We ordered a caprese salad, pierogis and a burger with a side salad. The caprese was NOT made the way it's suppose to be, whole tomato slices , mozzarella slices , olives, cucumbers and balsamic dressing. It however came out as 1 tomato cut into wedges, mozzarella pearls on arugula. I had to find the mozzarella and balsamic. The pierogis were deep fried and barely edible because of the hard texture of the edges . My husband's burger was cooked well but his salad was also on arugula. The waitress had lack luster response to my complaint about the salad. She didn't check back with us regarding how the food was while we ate. So I told her when we were done picking through what we wanted to eat. The water she served me tasted like it came from the well and the lemon slice she gave me was too small to mask the horrible flavor of the water. read more

Visited Grill 309 for breakfast on a cool, rainy Saturday morning. As one walks up to the front of Grill 309 - the business looks dark - for a moment I thought the business was closed. Upon entering, I was advised to sit where ever I wanted. I took a table and was immediately presented with a menu. After looking over the breakfast options, I ordered their Sausage Gravy & Biscuits, plus two eggs over easy and a side of bacon, plus coffee and water. The food came out pretty quickly, I requested ketchup and hot sauce - I was brought two soufflé cups - one with ketchup - and one with hot sauce. The hot sauce looked and tasted like some variation of a Frank's style cayenne pepper hot sauce. Very thin consistency-wise, and no real heat. The Sausage Gravy and Biscuits were really good! Nice flavor - it actually tasted like a hint of sausage in the gravy - unlike many other places - where you can see the sausage bits in the gravy - but it tastes like nothing. I added some black pepper, salt, and hot sauce to the gravy - as per my Sausage Gravy Protocol. The eggs were overcooked. The breakfast potatoes looked and tasted like they had seen better days. As friendly as the staff is, I have never found the food to be particularly good. Today I had the worst "Philly Cheesesteak" ever. It was a soggy mess. I'm not sure how they managed to get the bun so wet, whether it was the cheese sauce (not very good) or the other ingredients. I suspect I'll be back because we frequent Culpeper, and many of the other Main St. establishments don't serve beer, but I'll limit my menu choices in the future. read more

My shrimp Po Boy was very good and the French fries were excellent. I was disappointed in the onion rings. I am a huge fan of onion rings and thought ones battered and lightly fried to perfection served with your choice of dipping sauce were hard to refuse - but I wish I had. Me and my boyfriend are regulars here. We absolutely love this restaurant. The staff are always super friendly, the vibe is very cozy and casual, the music is great, and the food is ALWAYS delicious. I have had the shrimp po boy, poutine, bruschetta, pierogies, lobster roll (when it was still on the menu), sweet potato fries, BYOBurger, bbq burger, donut burger, beer cheese chicken sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, The Dip, Chipchos, Philly Cheesteak, fried twinkie, fried ice cream sandwich, and more! This is our go to spot. Plates/portions are sometimes inconsistent but its always delicious, and always worth the price. Bathrooms are spacious and clean, outdoor seating is cozy with a fire pit, dog beds, and blankets. There are two entrances and 3 exits if you are disabled, and there is handicap parking right out front. I absolutely love it here and haven't had a bad experience yet. read more

I ordered the chicken pita and with tzatziki and an iced tea. While I wish there had been a tad more chicken in the pita, I enjoyed the freshness of the lettuce and yogurt dressing and the chips were crispy and unique. The food was alright, I appreciate the creativity & vast variety of options; however, I felt even with all the toppings, it still tasted bland. It also seemed like they were judging me for eating alone, and were rushing me to leave; they got me to go boxes as I was actively eating, before I was even half way done with my sandwich, & the check without asking. I had the intention of taking my sweet time as I had a large chunk of time in between my visits for work, but I felt uncomfortable. I was planning on trying the fried Twinkie too but they got me the check before asking if I wanted anything else, so at that point I felt like I should just cut my losses. When rain turns into snow a hot meal is needed so I popped into this restaurant on my usual Sunday driving jaunt thru VA. It was seat yourself and fairly busy and found a corner seat. I was greeted promptly and my drink order was taken. The menu isn't very large in terms of selection and that can be a good thing hoping their focus would be on quality. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich with fries. From order time to delivery was less than 10 minutes you get a thumbs up. But I asked for tzatziki for my sandwich it didn't come out with it. Had to ask for ketchup, mayo and the tzatziki. He brought me the mayo and ketchup - no tzatziki and oddly no utensils or napkins. I asked for napkins and a fork when my waitress came to check and the tzatziki. She came back with the tzatziki but no fork. After a few minutes of eating she stopped by to check on how I was doing. I asked first a refill on my soda and a fork. My soda was delivered but still no fork. Hey I get I ordered a sandwich but how is a customer supposed to fish out the tzatziki from a small paper cup? Shaking my head I finished my meal. The chicken was nicely breaded and juicy but the pretzel bun was very undersized for the piece of chicken hence my need for a fork to eat the chicken and to apply the tzatziki. Perhaps I should keep a spare in my purse? Maybe they thought she can't be trusted with utensils? The fries were from appearance fresh and deep fried to perfection but the small paper cup of ketchup was not enough for the mound of fries. Rather than chancing on asking for another ketchup I cut my losses and finished my meal. I really wanted to like this little place it had great atmosphere and comfy but the shortfalls on missing utensils and the small cocktail napkins I was given left much to be desired. This was not the best experience. I was with a group of 10 and they had our table all ready which was great! They have a large drink selection as well as food. We started with drinks and apps but it took over 30 minutes to get my drink. The food ordering was a little chaotic (definitely a new waitress, but it seemed like she needed a little more training). We thought we would get happy hour prices but that was not the case. The food itself (I got the pulled pork) was decent. It didn't come with bbq sauce and had to ask for it, which was different. Would recommend maybe adding some more seasoning as it could've used a lil more flavor. But I loved the cheese/meat/pepper/mushroom ratio and the bun was nicely toasted.
