    Chicken fried steak special
    Alex F.

True down home cooking and venue. I had the chicken fried steak special, which came with delicious whipped potatoes and gravy. I got collards for my side. They made a perfect 50/50 sweet tea/unsweetened tea mix. The steak was good but the ambience was even better. Dress code was jeans and ball caps worn indoors!

Pulled chicken sandwich, collards, and baked beans

A bit of a mixed review for the meal. Positives: neat place, friendly staff, I liked the chicken sandwich and baked beans. Slight misses: large hush puppies that were a bit dry, collards could use a little more seasoning. I'd be curious to try some of the other items.

    Mac&Yuck

First time here, stopped in for lunch while we were in the area. The restaurant was rustic and nicely decorated. Clean and quaint atmosphere. Serving staff was very friendly and efficient. I got the pork BBQ sandwich platter which was served with 2 sides. I chosee mac-n-cheese and coleslaw. The Sandwich was piled high with moist, tender pulled pork. It was yummy! The coleslaw was creamy & delish. The Mac-n-cheese, umm... it was probably the worst I've ever had! Not much taste, hardly any cheese involved, and sitting in a pool of grease. yuck. So, go for the BBQ. Skip the mac&cheese.

The brisket was smoked nicely I'd prefer it to been a little more seasoned but it was made up with the bbq sauce. Staff and service were really good and the interior had a nice vibe to it. My southern roots have to say no to the collards. Sorry! It's nice that they have 2 slaws and a variety of pickles to choose from and the hush puppies were perfect. They offer a variety of sauces and I preferred the Carolina sauce with a bit of Virginia sweet. That said, the overall experience didn't quite match the price point. At around $90 for three people, it felt expensive for a very casual, counter-service setting. They have a quick order cafeteria style service with most sides and meats right there to serve from the ordering counter. They offer a variety of pre-portioned desserts, cold alcoholic beverages, and meats and sides in larger portions to go We chose to sit outside, but the noise level was a major drawback--constant truck traffic and a very loud motorcycle shop next door made it hard to relax or enjoy the meal. These are things that the exchange cannot control, so if noise is an issue for you, sit inside and you will have a different experience. Overall, decent food, but between the cost and the noise, it wasn't the experience we were hoping for.

Serving American classics with high quality and great hospitality…read more Sandwiched between two floors of antique malls, Jack's was the perfect stop in the day to get some no-frills nourishment. Their breakfast is incredibly generous and made with ingredients that were fresh, clean, and meticulous in detail. The design of their menu is just so promising with unique twists that are not unheard of, but just an elevated touch when it comes to American diner food as a whole. Things like truffle infused hollandaise, fried green tomato BLT, pairing balsamic with goat cheese, a blackened pork, even mushrooms on the breakfast menu all hint that people developing their menu are confident in their skills in offering something more when it comes to breakfast plates and sandwiches. Their homemade aiolis (highly recommend their pesto aioli) and hot sauce tie any dish together-- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Things made to this quality are not to be unremarked. Came in with friends so we can try everything on their menu, and we were pleasantly surprised on all fronts. Presentation, ingredients, preparation all elements that made our meals great and were evident across all dishes ranging from protein to carb. Details like toasted bread with already spread with butter, perfectly poached eggs, and brioche as the bun of choice were things we peeped. We would have left satisfied if these details weren't accounted for, but we were so impressed this became a revisit during our short vacation. Their space is greatly spacious, with an open drinks station so its just not pretentious. There is even a section in the front to pick up goods made by local artisans. This is a great place to dine in, no notes.

Located conveniently off the highway with on-site parking, it wasn't hard to find. We seated ourselves and were quickly greeted by a very friendly waitress. She was kind, attentive, and made good recommendations. Service was overall very good the entire visit. The restaurant was clean inside. The menu is mostly your average BBQ fare with pork or brisket and side dishes. We started with the loaded potato skins which were pretty good and filling, if not slightly over-cooked. We both got meat platters, one with just brisket, the other with brisket and pork. Side dishes included macaroni and cheese, cabbage and potatoes, cornbread, hushpuppies, and toast. The meat for both plates arrived room temperature and was pretty greasy, though the smoky flavor was good and the meat was tender. The side dishes were all pretty standard, though I will say the cornbread and hushpuppies both had kernels of corn mixed in which was a very tasty surprise. Unfortunately, for a BBQ restaurant, the main item on the menu (the meat) wasn't that impressive. Service and sides get you far, but if the meat is room temperature and greasy, it loses a lot of the appeal. It wasn't a bad option by any means, but you wouldn't be wrong to explore other area options.
