We drove 2 hours to have the Prime rib that was advertised online. We got there and they did not have the prime rib. The server was training but didn't have anyone training him. He had to keep going back to the kitchen to ask questions while taking our order. Its a nice country atmosphere. We got 2 rolls and they charge for refills on the rolls. The entire staff was talking, laughing and goofing off in the dining area in front us. It was pretty unprofessional in my opinion. We were the only customers in the place on a Friday evening. One good point is that the server noticed my Military ID and gave us a discount. Definitely wont be coming back anytime soon. read more

This is my favorite steak place. Too bad I don't get a chance to eat here very often. It's about 2 hrs away. Probably around 15 years since I was last there. Nothing has changed. It's still the same great place for steak. They have a lot to choose from, not just steak. The service is awesome. Very friendly and enthusiastic. This place is on the side of the mountain between new Market and Luray. You can't miss it. It reminds me of a 1950's restaurant inside. I'm just going by the movies. I'm not old enough to remember what restaurants in the 50s looked like. If you're in the area check it out and also check out the civil war history in the area. read more

I wouldn't have thought of visiting a steak house out here, but this place surprised me for a good balance of quality and price. I'd been here several times over the years and never had a bad meal. I would hesitate to call these steaks on par with a fancy steak joint, but I'm confident in saying they are consistently good. The ambiance is very laid back, old school and family friendly. Wow. We didn't expect to have this first time experience. Our visit consisted of the bar area only. The live music got us to go but the food and service will keep us coming back! The pours were generous, food and service was excellent (shout out to bartender/waitress extraordinaire, Yvonne), and the live music was great. We got the 12 oz sirloin cookes medium rare (came out perfect and rivaled Longhorn), 2- 6 oz chicken breast (tender and flavorful), 2 salads (ranch tasted homemade and ingredients were fresh) and 2 sides (mac & cheese was on point and the french fries tasted like boardwalk fries) all for $47. I'll tell you... everything was phenomenal! From the tasty yeast rolls & club cracker basket to our smoked smoked bologna appetizer (never seen that menu item before) to the main entree for two and peanut butter pie dessert (get it!). We look forward to frequenting Dan's Steak House and love that we're supporting local business. Oh! Happy Hour (in the bar only) is 4:00-7:00pm, with $4 drafts and half off apps. The bar is a tad small to have live music but the owner (Neil, super nice guy) said he would move the music to a different area in the restaurant to accommodate a larger future crowd if he needed. Can't give a review except husband and I are in the parking lot, everything that we read stated this steakhouse is open from 12pm to 9pm, not at all the case. The restaurant had a few cars in the parking lot, could see people inside but they were closed at 6pm when we arrived, very very disappointed because the website says they are open bit clearly they were wrong.. We arrived and were informed there was only one cook and one server so there would be a longer than average wait. We decided to wait having exhausted most of the towns eateries. First I have to say and will say again, everyone on the staff were super polite and worked hard to make our experience pleasant. We started with the trio appetizers. We chose fried green tomatoes, potato skins and motz sticks. The fried green tomatoes were, "eh", next time we will pass. Now the potato skins. Although they appeared questionable to me never having bbq and coleslaw stuffed skins these things were damn amazing! I honestly could just devour a whole plate of these things. The motz sticks- standard and hard to ruin, kids were pleased! My husband ordered the burger which was substantial and he reported delicious. I ordered the rib eye, great cut, cooked perfectly as ordered. I cannot report on my sides because I was topped off after having the potato skins and steak. The place was clean, country charming. And I will circle back again to say everyone was very polite and friendly. I would not report this to be a five star, linen napkin establishment but this was a notable, comfortable and surprisingly worth the wait country steakhouse. Loved this low key steakhouse! We were traveling through the area between hiking and visiting the Civil War museum and happened upon this restaurant. They have great appetizers, tasty steaks and sides and scrumptious desserts! We had the sirloin, NY strip, Caesar salad and mac 'n cheese. They also have a small bar where they were hosting trivia. Nice spot to come for a mountain country experience. Our waitress was very friendly and put up with my dad's dry humor. If you are visiting for the day, stopping by Luray or seeing the caverns, this is a nice spot to take the family. I ordered steamed and wings and my dad got a NY strip. The rolls they give you before the meal were nice and heavy served with cinnamon butter. The fried green tomatoes with blue cheese were delicious. I don't eat much red meat, but my dad said his Strip and baked potato were very good- he did not leave any scraps. My steamed shrimp basket with hot butter on the side was great. Too pricey for what they offer as far as food. Not the same ,as how they use to be. The service was great as far as server.

After a three-year hiatus due to past negative experiences, we unfortunately found Dan's has not improved. Our recent visit was marred by a flashing light at our first table, a very limited and overpriced menu, and significant issues with both food and service. The burned potato skin appetizer took over 20 minutes to arrive and was served without plates through we ask for them twice. It took 40 minutes for our dinner to arrive. My boyfriend's shrimp was overcooked and rubbery, while my hamburger steak appeared to be a thin, barely warm, frozen patty drowned in thick, pasty gravy. The lukewarm baked potato, (they were out of mash potatoes) was minimally topped and the salad arrived halfway through the meal. The slow service was baffling given the near empty restaurant, and while our server was pleasant, she did know what she was doing. We attribute these issues to Dan's apparent staffing problems, a known local issue due to reported bad treatment of staff. The people behind us were overheard remarking that they would need to stop at McDonalds on the way home, as there meal was not good. We will not be returning and will actively discourage our short-term rental guests from dining at Dan's, strongly recommending the significantly better and more reasonably priced, always good, Southern Kitchen in New Market (note the $21.95 rib-eye versus Dan's $37 price). read more

We were on a guys trip to Shenandoah Valley National Park and someone told us we needed to try Dan's Steak House. We were not disappointed! We were somewhat concerned when they put us in the bar area away from the regular guests, but there were 13 of us and we were pretty loud, so it was probably better that way. We ended up ordering the Order 2 for $17.99 (2 app portions of an entree: coconut shrimp and steak with 2 sides) as well as an additional side of Mac and cheese. The waitress had told me that they make their own Italian dressing so I ordered that with my salad. Unfortunately, it appeared to be more oil than anything and separated pretty quickly. After driving past this restaurant hundreds of times over the years I finally decided to stop and try it since I wasn't really in a hurry to get anywhere. Comfortable atmosphere and since I was there shortly after they opened it wasn't crowded. Plenty of booth and tables to choose from. The only downside was it was the hottest day of the year and the a/c wasn't working right, but paddle fans kept it bearable. They have a full bar but I chose sweet tea which was good. Lauren my waitress kept it coming. I had the thick cut ribeye steak with baked potato and fried onions. Everything was enjoyable. No complaints from me. But we were put in the bar area, high windows with curtains, couldn't see out. My wife ordered prime rib steak, very tender and juicy. I wanted seafood platter, saw on menu online. But didn't see on menu there. Only seafood was catfish and steamed shrimp. So I got hamburger steak with green beans and baked potato.
