I visited today after visiting Luray Caverns. Upon entering, most of the servers seemed to have an annoyed energy: not directed at customers but definitely palpable in the air. We were sat quickly and our server was attentive. Chips and salsa arrived quickly. The chips were a bit greasy, the salsa was good, the white sauce was okay but had a weird warmness. We ordered frozen margaritas: blueberry and mango. The drinks contained little to no liquor and the mango had a weird bitter aftertaste. We ordered the chicken fajitas and fries topped with steak-- I can't remember the name. The fries were delish and a good shareable size. The steak pieces were a bit over-seasoned so they came off as salty. The energy was good after the servers seemed to not be annoyed by whatever may have been going on. The fajitas were so dry and had zero seasoning. We ordered a steak, chicken and shrimp variety and the meat was horrible. I get that it's the only Mexican restaurant in town, but it left a lot to be desired. I didn't even finish the meat because it was that dry. My husband got a burrito and that was fine, but I feel like burritos are easy to make and the tortilla really masks poor taste. The chips were okay but nothing remarkable. Perfect stop after burning all those calories at Luray caverns. It's only a 7min drive from the caves and welcomes you with hot Mexican chips and salsa. Though the salsa wasn't the best, the customer service was quick and warm. Upon arrival, I was nervous because we found only two open parking spots. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted and throughout our entire dining experience there was consistent friendly service by all the employees who served us. We got the guacamole and that was probably the top we've ever had, though it could have used more cilantro but that's my preference - it was creamy and loved the chip bowl it came in. Don't let the size fool you, it can hold a lot of guac! We got the chicken and steak fajitas - yum! The steak was a bit overcooked but I didn't mind because that's how I like my steak strips. The veggies were sautéed - onions were soft and bell pepper was a bit charred but still soft and still with a bit of a crisp. For dessert I recommend the Tres Leche - soooo yummy. Not overly sweet. Tony and I stayed overnight in Luray, VA and searched the town over for somewhere to get a light bite to eat. We had a lovely day driving in the Shenandoah Valley and Mountains. Tony spotted this restaurant and we stopped. The restaurant was busy but we were greeted immediately and seated. Tony ordered a Budweiser in a bottle and I went with Iced Tea Half and Half with lemon and lime. Tony and I split a combination platter. He went with a chicken and a beef soft taco. I went with a tostada w side of beans and rice. The food was delicious and the waitress very friendly and attentive. We were happy with our meal. My parents and I dined at Rancho Viejo in Luray, VA, on Saturday night, December 9, 2023. To be honest, we were hesitant to try the restaurant, as we had heard some not-so-good things about the place after it had come under new ownership and management a year or two ago. But I believe that Rancho is now under NEW new management, no longer the "new" management of a couple months ago or so. We really wanted alcohol drinks, but there was a sign posted just inside the entrance alerting customers that Rancho did not yet have its ABC (alcohol) license but that it was pending. This tells me the management/ownersip is brand-spanking-new and not to be confused or affiliated with the negative comments I had heard several months ago. I was so hungry when my Alan's burrito arrived that night that I forgot to take a picture of it. Anyone who knows me even slightly knows how unusual that is. I take pictures of almost every plate of food and every cocktail I make or order out. Therefore, I have no way to illustrate by image how gorgeous my burrito was. So let me tell you instead. That burrito positively shimmered! Completely napped in satiny queso the color of heavy cream and garnished with a delicate sprinkling of finely diced tomato, Alan's burrito (its name on the menu; I chose the chicken filling) was the most beautiful thing I had seen all day. I told you I was hungry, and I was. I and Mom admired that beauty for half a minute, and I, consumed by hunger, dug in. The burrito was fabulous. Expertly spiced, bursting with perfectly cooked chicken and tender veg. Smothered in that luscious, gleaming, hot queso. Downright celestial. Mom had the chicken fajitas, Mike, the steak fajitas. Both arrived sizzling hot and lovely. The salsa was fresh, bright, and just right. I ordered a side of guacamole and it was attractively presented in a fried bowl-shaped corn tortilla, a generous portion that was enough for all three of us. I make a mean guac myself, if I must say, and Rancho's is a contender. As mentioned, Rancho is under brand new ownership, so the restaurant doesn't yet have its ABC license. But it's on its way, and a nice new large bar (no bottles yet, of course) attests to its imminent arrival. There is already a salsa bar, and though we didn't partake of it that night, it looked delicious. The only thing I think Rancho Viejo needs to improve on is its lighting. The interior lighting is far too bright. Dimmer lighting and candles or small lamps on the tables would be nice. Also, the windows are heavily tinted, which is nice when you're inside but can give the appearance at night from the road or parking lot that the restaurant is closed. Exterior "open" flags or signs, or a couple neon "open" signs would solve that problem. The exterior of Rancho Viejo has recently been painted and made more attractive. The whole place looks spiffy when you drive by. There is plenty of lovely patio seating for the warm months. Visit the virtually brand-new Rancho Viejo as soon as you can. I'll be going back ASAP. read more

We had our post-hike lunch here on a whim and we are so glad we did. There aren't too many options as far as restaurants to choose from in the area. The outside does not look promising--it's an old McDonald's building...and it wasn't cleaned up super well. We moved past appearance and decided to give it a shot. We found this place by accident; driving up Main Street looking for lunch. Service is fast, professional, and courteous. My sweet tea wasn't, particularly. Which is actually fine with me- most places make it like syrup. This was a nice change of pace. My son and heir said his was fine. Darling Bride had a Coke. It was a Coke. I got Lunch Special #8- two chicken enchiladas with a pile of Mexican rice, a mound of shredded lettuce, a scoop of sour cream and half a slice of tomato. The portion size was fine. The flavour was unexceptional. If you've gotten the two chicken enchiladas lunch special in pretty much any Mexican restaurant in a small town where people think Taco Bell serves Mexican food, you know exactly how this was. Darling Bride got Lunch Special #1- a chili relleno, a taco, some beans, and "guacamole salad." She tells me that she "wouldn't cross the desert to eat it or anything," but that it was good. The scion of our clan had a shrimp quesadilla. He says that overall, the flavours clashed, so he pulled it apart and ate each of the components separately, and declared himself pleased. Lunch for 3 came to $26.58 before tip. Not bad for what we got. I would not wake my Bride up one morning to take the 4 hour drive here for lunch, but if I were already in town, I would stop again. read more

We were just in town for a night. The hotel desk clerk recommended this place and I'm so glad she did! The complimentary salsa was smoky and was even a little spicier than most Mexican restaurants. We split the molcajete, which came with steak, chicken, carnitas, and chorizo. They were out of the nopales (cactus) but it had extra onion. We've never had a molcajete with beans in it, but it was tasty. The service was good and quick. My only complaint is that the margaritas were weak. The flavor was good (not too sweet or sour) and they were big. But for $14 I would have appreciated a lil more tequila. I'd definitely come back if we're in the area again. read more

We had a large group including a member with a service dog that is not an emotional support animal. The manager approached us and stated that the dog could not be in the patio area unless it was a service animal. He was told that it was, and he stated he needed to see the service card for proof. This goes against the ADA. Explained to the manager that he is not allowed to ask for that. He is only allowed to ask by law if it is a service animal and what service does it provide. I ate here a few weeks ago with a friend. As I have seen in others reviews for this restaurant, our experience was beyond awful. From the moment we walked in until we had to ask for our bill at the end, it was as if we did not exist. There was no one else in the restaurant at the time we were there which was between 1:30 - 2:00 in the afternoon. The only waitress we saw the whole time sat at a table with her face in her phone. The gentleman who I had to go to ask to take our order was in the bar section buried in his phone. Neither ever looked up or came to check on us. We found our food subpar and lacking in flavor. Two other single people came in while we were finishing up. They, too, were ignored. I am in my late 60s and this is only the second time in my life I have refused to leave a tip. It was really that bad on all fronts. I have no idea who owns this place, but they better spend a little time there keeping an eye on their staff and the quality of their food. As I stated before, I have seen a few other reviews that have said the exact same thing, so ours was not a one-off. All in all, a really lousy experience. The waiter was overwhelmed so the service wasn't good. The Lunch Fajita was the smallest lunch fajita I have ever seen!! Went from $10 to $17 because my husband added shrimp. The burrito bowl was not good at all. Chipotle is better. Beginning with our drink order, I requested horchata (popular rice drink in Mexico) and they didn't have it. Second time here. First time was horrible service and mediocre food way to sweet margaritas. But always figure people have an off night. So tried them again today. Rude horrible service. One of my party can not wear a mask. If you are one please don't eat here they will make you feel like you are a criminal. And saw tables sat without masks on by another employee. I really don't mind obeying rules. But please be thoughtful of people with medical issues who can not.
