Filet with butter. Peppercorn sauce on the side. Mushrooms with crustini on the side.

I loved this restaurant! We were in town for a concert and did not make a reservation. We took yelp's advice and waited in line at 4:30 for a seat at the bar. The bartender, Josh, was fabulous. We had cocktails to start and a Barolo with our meal. I had a medium rare filet, I was a tiny bit too rare for me but still delicious. The salad, ribeye, mushrooms and key lime pie were perfect. I wish I lived in town so I could visit again. Go. You won't regret it. My pics are terrible. Don't judge.

Came here for a birthday celebration and had the best time! Very cozy, great service, and great food. I got the chateaubriand because that was new to me and the meat was very tender. My partner got the bone in ribeye and if I'm honest, that one was tastier. The kitchen was also nice enough to warm the steak back on the grill.

Following an appointment at UVA, we were able to stop by and get a table for an AMAZING meal here at the Black Cow! Such a cool spot. Indoor and outdoor seating, nice bar area. Waitstaff was super friendly and informed. Emily was great! Excellent menu and choice of cuts. Tonight, we got the Caesar Salad, Steak Frites, Crab Cakes and summer squash. All were delicious!! Same owner as Public Fish and Oyster House and they know how to do this!! Can't wait to go back!

Black Cow Chophouse did not disappoint but my very first visit was truly outstanding thanks to Thomas and Julie. From the moment we were seated, their service was nothing short of superb--attentive without being overbearing, knowledgeable about the menu and pairings and genuinely welcoming. They went above and beyond to make the evening special. The star of the night was the porterhouse. Cooked to absolute perfection, it had the perfect balance of tenderness and flavor--easily one of the best steaks I've ever had. The presentation was elegant, and every bite reminded me that Black Cow is such a gem in Charlottesville. The combination of incredible food and top-tier service from Thomas and Julie made this a 5-star experience all around. If you're looking for a truly memorable steakhouse experience, this is the place to be.

Sat at the bar and enjoyed service from Josh & Steph. Had their sirloin and frites with a salad at an incredible price of $21 during happy hour (4:30 pm - 6 pm)! Old fashioned ($9) was quite tasty. Great atmosphere! Free parking in back.

We were looking forward to a great steak dinner here. The restaurant is very beautiful inside and we were seated at the high top tables at the back of the restaurant by the open kitchen area. The high top tables are very close together. My friend gave me her big bag since there was nowhere to put it other than the booth like seating next to me. The host would seat people and was very rude to my friend and I about the bag. Eventually we put it on the ground. As for the food it is lackluster. We ordered steaks from the chalkboard (my friend always goes with the rib eye while I tried the NY strip.) then two sides to go with our steaks (asparagus and mash potatoes). I ordered my steak medium rare while my friend ordered hers medium. The bread/whipped butter came out with our very lightly dressed salad. Bread/whipped butter was pretty good. Salad was too lightly dressed for my liking. The steaks and the sides came out next. My steak was overcooked and was more medium/medium well. My friend's steak was a medium rare. Not sure if its the kitchen's fault or the waitress wrote down the wrong cooked. My steak was seasoned well but alittle burnt. very disappointing. Both sides were just okay. At the end I did order creme brulee and it was burnt at the top and not that appetizing. Overall disappointed we paid a lot for a mediocre meal. :(

We dropped in at opening and this place is hoping. We got the last two seats at the bar for their amazing happy hour featuring the Steak Frites with Belgian fries for $18. They ask pink or no pink. Go no pink, this is quality meat. We added a side salad for $3. The happy hour drinks are fabulous. We loved the atmosphere. I wish we had time to stay for their full dinner. Must try.

Everything was great at Black Cow Chophouse - the service, ambiance, food. We got a reservation for 8:15 and showed up at 6:30 hoping for a seat at the bar. We were well taken care of by the hostess and bartender who got us to the bar around 7:30 after we opened a bottle of wine on their outdoor lounge. The bar was cozy and the servers were attentive and warm, but the food was exactly what I needed that day! They cook their burgers "no pink" or "pink" and I assume "no pink" is closer to medium and "pink" is medium rare to rare. We ordered a bacon bleu burger "pink" and were really happy with it. Typically I like my burgers medium so I might try taking my chances with the no pink next time since I can't see them cooking it over with their "no well done" policy for the cuts of meat. The fries, Brussels sprouts, and Mac and cheese were delicious, especially with the garlic aioli. I think after the burger, the Mac and cheese was a favorite. I don't usually go for lobster Mac and cheese, but this one was exceptional. You could actually taste the lobster stock throughout the sauce as well as the cheese.

An absolute gem of a steakhouse! The beef is locally sourced, cooked to order, and seasoned to perfection--truly some of the best steaks I've ever had. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance of classic and hip, making it both comfortable and stylish. Service is top-notch--friendly, attentive, and welcoming from start to finish. A small spot with big flavor and charm--definitely a must-try!

Mine and my boyfriend's all time favorite steak house. Not just locally but probably ever. The brussel sprouts are perfect. Honestly every side we've gotten has been amazing. Definitely our go to date night spot. Service is good as well.

Happy hour is anazing! Steak frites are cooked perfectly and the beef varies. The atmosphere is relaxed and there's heaters in the outside porch. Highly recommend because the service is lovely. Be sure to make a reservation!

Woodford 121. Very enjoyable. Starts very smooth with a bit of a bite at the end with hints of oak.

Drove into Charlottesville, VA from Baltimore, and went to the Yelp app to look for a dinner venue. The Black Cow looked interesting, and we were ready for red meat. The venue is cool. It appears to be an old service station that has been decorated in a bovid motief. It has a nice bar, not very large, seats about 10. Outside dining is available We did not have reservations, and the wait was about an hour, so we chose to eat at the bar. Good choice! The bartender (Noah) was excellent. The bourbon selection was also excellent. I had my first pour of Woodford 121.2. Really enjoyed it. The salads were good. Warm bread was served. We both had the New York strip, and they were nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked. Ratings: Venue 4/5. Found the barrel bar stools uncomfortable. Service - 5/5 Food - 5/5 Cost - $$$ Overall, we had a very good experience.

My empty drinks for over 20 minutes.

The managing partner also came by our table very casually and friendly- I just googled their bios and its very interesting. So I wasn't sure I would like everything we ordered- I only wanted the beet salad. It was amazing!!!!!!! We also had the dip trio which I liked the hummus best with yummy bread. My daughter, her friend and her mom LOVED the calamari and said it was light and delicious. Lamb kebob was tasty. Desert chocoholic was scrumptious and the lemon granita was light and interesting with homemade cotton candy that we laughed looked like ratchet barbie hair but tasted so light. SERVICE We came in for a belated Valentine's Day dinner,…read moreand the staff immediately seated us when we got int. Everyone was friendly and professional without being too formal. Our server served us waters and let us peruse the menu. Most spots will have the waiter come by and ask you how things are, and our waiter didn't come by at all after setting down the food which was interesting -- not good nor bad but probably were also busy. AMBIENCE The space felt upscale but still easygoing, which made it perfect for our Valentine's night out. There's no dress code, but most people looked like they'd put a little effort in, matching the polished but comfortable vibe. Loved the open kitchen all the way towards the back by the bookshelf area gave the room some energy without making it feel noisy. Definitely struck a great balance between date-night fancy and laid-back cool and casual. FOOD We started with the Beet Salad Ribbons and the Meze Trio. The beet salad mixed earthy ribbon-sheet beets with hazelnuts and a bright pomegranate vinaigrette that surprised me! Loved the pairing of the beets and cheese and hazelnut crunch. As a texture fan, this really hit the spot! It was colorful, fresh, and really well balanced. The Meze Trio had charred eggplant, a yogurt-goat cheese dip, and a seasonal hummus. Each had its own flavor and texture, and everything felt super fresh and well-seasoned. Favorite was the seasonal hummus. The yogurt-goat cheese dip was good but definitely sweeter than I personally perferred! The Calamari was also quite good and had decent number of chunky pieces that weren't just breading. The only small letdown was the pita bread since we had more dips than pita left. We expected refills might be complimentary, especially for a place like this, but they weren't. Not a big deal, just something that stood out in an otherwise smooth and thoughtful experience! The Manti Dumplings were a highlight too -- probably so much handwork in making these look like they do! The Sharondale mushrooms gave them a rich, savory flavor, and the pepper butter sauce added just the right touch of spice. The burger was also great -- juicy, flavorful, and paired with house fries and an amazing urfa pepper aioli. You could tell both dishes were elevated but still comforting, showing off the chef's fine-dining background in a really approachable way. For dessert, we shared the Baklava Cheesecake and a Chocolate Hazelnut special. The cheesecake was unique -- cheesecake filling sandwiched between baklava. It was delicious but not what I was expected! It was creamy and nutty with pistachio layers, and the chocolate dessert was incredibly rich without being heavy. Both were perfect finishes. We even took home the leftover goat cheese dip because it was that good. Overall, pices were a little on the higher side ($23-$29 for mains, $14 for dessert), but for the quality and thought put into every dish, it felt worth it and would come back again for a special occasion! This was definitely elevated ambience and the food was well executed in our opinion. I can see the hype! Definitely not a spot I'd frequent often but for the special days -- this is it to impress your date or family!

We weren't sure how big they were but when they arrived we realized they're the size of a small taco. The breading was good but the meat didn't have much flavor without the sauce which was really good. We then ordered the chicken and avocado arepa. It was the size of my palm and filled with what I'd describe as chicken salad mixed with avocado. It was ok but not my favorite. I'm a small eater so for me, I'd need two empanadas as a meal but my husband would definitely need 4 and he's an average eater. At $6 for each little empanada (comes without sides or a drink) and $12 for each arepa (comes without sides or a drink), the price just doesn't seem worth it. The service was good and if the price matched the servings we would try again but not at the current price.

We had 5:30pm reservations and were seated immediately. The host was warm, acknowledged the occasion, and honored my request for a quieter table by placing us in a bay-window nook. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The space echoed so badly we could barely hear each other, and the setting sun combined with the AC being accidentally turned off made the area feel like a sauna. Our water glasses were filled within minutes, so we thought service would be smooth. Instead, we sat for another 15 minutes before anyone greeted us--while a table seated after us was helped promptly and served at a noticeably faster pace. I understand large parties require attention (there was a group of 10-12 nearby), but as a former server myself, I've never allowed smaller tables to feel forgotten. When our server, Lucian (sp?), finally arrived, we immediately placed drink and appetizer orders because we were already starving. The appetizers came out about 20 minutes later--still before our drinks. The brussels sprouts were excellent and worth the wait. The biscuit basket was good, though the butter-to-biscuit ratio felt off, and the apple butter was surprisingly delicious. Our entrées didn't arrive until at least 45 minutes after that. The pacing was simply poor, and we consistently felt like an afterthought. While our server was polite, he didn't initiate conversation, offer suggestions, mention happy hour, or acknowledge our daughter's birthday. He didn't even suggest dessert. Meanwhile, the six-top behind us--seated well after we were--was wrapping up their meal as ours was just being served. The food presentation was beautiful. The pot roast, however, was underwhelming. It lacked seasoning and sauce, and the vegetables were forgettable--very few potatoes, no carrots. "Not your normal pot roast" was accurate, but not in a good way. The shrimp and grits were excellent, with great seasoning and a flavorful sauce. The salmon was moist and well-prepared, though it still had a few scales on the end of the filet. Once we finished eating, we again waited for our server to return. We eventually had to wave him down for boxes and again to request the check. Parking in the back was convenient early in the evening, though I imagine it becomes difficult later. Would we return? Unfortunately, probably not. We've been treated better, served more efficiently, and appreciated more fully at other restaurants--including one almost directly across the street. What we hoped would be a memorable celebration ended up feeling ho-hum at a high price--too high for the experience we received.
