Went to Country Cooking in Culpeper again today. This time for lunch. I think the buffet is $13.99 so I ordered a fried fish with baked potato to to for $16.99 and ate all my salads and lunch there. A great deal really. The salad was delicious. I had 2. Then a plate of fatty American sides but I liked those too. :) Doesn't have to look like a palace to me. The food was good. My waitress was at the table, everytime I went back to the bar, to collect my plate. read more

Great salad bar and excellent mashed potatoes and gravy as part of the all-you-can eat servings. Also good soft ice cream! I got the chicken strips which were very tasty. Stopped in on a Saturday morning for the breakfast buffet. CC does a breakfast buffet on weekends only - from 8:00 am - 12:00 noon. Sat at a table and then went for the buffet. Dished up a biscuit with sausage gravy on one plate; on another: a pancake, scrambled eggs, a sausage patty, corned beef hash, and a small bowl of breakfast potatoes. Plus coffee and water. The sausage gravy was pretty decent. I did add salt, black pepper, and hot sauce to the gravy. The scrambled eggs were overdone. The bacon is the most thinly sliced thing you've ever seen - it ends up being a series of curled up balls of bacon. The corned beef hash and pancake were actually pretty good for a buffet - although I would prefer more of a crisp on the corned beef hash. The breakfast potatoes were unremarkable. Very misleading advertising. Very poorly cooked buffet style food sold as individual entrees with $15.99 for 3 piece chicken fingers. Country fried steak tasted like it had been fried in the same oil as the fish. It was sent back. Bathroom was beyond filthy. We were there at lunch time. read more

Great selection on the breakfast/brunch when we were there. Only issue I had was some of the selections weren't hot enough. Sausage gravy was luke warm and the powdered eggs were also. We will go back but you've got to check temperature. read more

This happened once after church. They were expecting a big crowd I guess and everyone was in a big tizzy. My iced tea came and had ONE tiny ice cube in it. The lemon was submerged in the tea ( don't they know the customer has to fish that out to squeeze it ? ). Anyway , the waitress didn't make any eye contact and never came back to check if everything was OK--not at all. No chance for a refill. Very impersonal service. I got the shrimp "feast" and it was that dreadful over-breaded stuff. I wanted to ask for some lemon for it, but no one even made eye contact to attend to me at all. I left feeling really let down so left a very tiny tip. The management knows better so please teach their waitresses how to do it right. Otherwise they won't make much of a living if they depend on their tips. You have to make the person eating there seem special. I was practically ignored. Clean up the act and I might be back, but it will hopefully be a better experience. This time was DEPRESSING ! read more

First time here...my server was very helpful and explained how their menu worked. You pick an entree from the menu and select a side dish. The buffet is included, limited in selections, I wish there was more of the salad bar than what they offered. Now, the food was great just like homemade. They keep the Buffett very tidy. The whole resturant is kept clean and what ab amazing bathroom. The staff were very friendly and attentive. I noticed that they do different specials throughout the week. Mondays kids eat free with 1 adult entree (max 2 kids free)... this one stuck out the best deal for myself as I am a parent. That's an awesome deal. Unlike other buffets they allow you to take home your entree not the buffet. I had a pretty good experience here, the price to eat was cheap. I will be returning in the future. The new Culpeper Counrty Cookin is somewhat similar to the original but they could really use a good cook. Twice the steak was over cooked and too tough to eat. Maybe in a few weeks it will get better but I do not plan to visit there again. read more

It is a steal, if you don't mind poor quality food. Tip: Get a takeaway box to put your protein in to eat later, and fill up on that bland buffet. If you like generic, bland foods that are as far away from memorable as you can get, Country Cookin' is the place to be. I ate an exorbitant amount of food and regretted every moment of it, until I got the check, which was oddly satisfying, feeling like you killed an antelope just to purge its stomach of grass. Not because you needed to, you just did it for sport. Anyway, that's how it felt when I got the check. I would recommend you don't waste your calorie intake here, but, if you're on a budget, I'd say it isn't a bad choice. read more

So.. You don't expect much going to a place like this. So standards are already low... But tonight was the ultimate low... The waitress was just.... Ugh. So I asked for a lemonade for my little one... I even asked for it IN A KIDS CUP.. She's clearly too young to drink out of a normal glass, I mean she's almost too small for the high chair.... She brings me a normal glass of lemonade, full to the brim almost to the point of overflowing... Really lady? So I told her she couldn't drink that and asked again for a kids cup. She brings it we place our orders. Mind you we were ready to order when she took drink orders but she was gone too fast for us to say anything about the order .. Like literally I was about to tell her the order and as my mouth is opening, she's walking away... Well alright... So I could have let those two things slide. Not all service is perfect and like I said the bar is set low. However. My cup was empty for a good portion of our meal. She passed our table several times without even glancing. I had to grab her after she was taking another order out to even get a refill for myself... Then 2 others at the table went empty.. And.... Then I went empty again. So sure, I was probably drinking a bit much tea... However, she still kept passing by the table and not glancing. 3 glasses empty... 4 actually because instead of taking my empty one she just brought another glass which she did every time so maybe this confused her about what was empty I don't know... I finally flagged her down again and asked for another tea. She glances around so I assumed stupidly that she would bring the other drinks as well... No. Mine came, alone.. So, I motioned over to my nephew who was completely out... And his girlfriend who had maybe a smudge of watered down soda. I said my nephew was out, and my nephews girlfriend also asked for a refill. She brings back one drink. My nephew let's his girlfriend have it and now I'm upset. I think that's when our order arrived, so she was already coming to the table... I tell her we need another drink for my nephew. She brings that back and we don't see her at our table again until we're basically done. My drink has been empty again and I counted the times she passed by and didn't glance, or ask how we were doing. She talked to a co worker and worked at a table that was literally right next. To ours during that time. 7 times she passed us by back and forth without a glance. Maybe she was having an off day, but that was just one too many mistakes. I finally said something, maybe a bit harshly, but she totally ignored us the entire meal, and just flat out didn't pay attention to the table in general when she was actively working it. It was the most ridiculous service I have ever had. I have Never walked out of a place without leaving some sort of tip and it's almost always above the recommended amount but I did tonight. Just ridiculous. And then... As if the screwed up service wasn't bad enough, she apparently had a melt down because one of the.... Maybe managers or a senior worker came over and asked me what I said to her because she was in tears... Really? So.. I got bad service, and guilted because I called the bad server on her bad service... And then I saw the same senior worker comforting her outside... I mean you need to do what you need to do as a boss I guess but I seriously hope they re-train her too instead of just making her think the crap service wasn't as bad as it was... Because crap is exactly what kind of service it was... Separate issue same visit it looked like they gave me the bottom of the barrel of sweet potato fries. By that time I didn't really care... There were enough decent ones to be OK, but there were a lot of tiny dried extra thin pieces too. I love Country Cookin....the one here in Culpeper and the one in Fredericksburg. Every time I go home for a visit, this is where I head. Southern food and lots of it at a great price. You can have the buffet and a choice of a meat dish with drinks of your choice for only about $8.00. My favorite dish is the stewed tomatoes. I just wish they had black eyed peas to go with them all the time....for they sometimes do cook 'em up. If you're not a buffet person, order off the menu. Lots of choices. The restaurant in Culpeper is newer and larger than the one in Fredericksburg with a little variation on the food offered. But both are good. read more

My parents insisted we should go there since they have been there before on the night my son was born, I was not impressed. I ordered the meatloaf which was grilled not baked for some reason and it came with a "baked" potato. All of your other sides are on the buffet. Kind of like Shoney's. My grilled meatloaf was mushy and some what tasteless, how is something grilled mushy. My baked potato was obviously microwaved, the skin was like show leather. The mac and cheese from the bar was bland and tasteless. I will not go back here ever again. I know the prices are cheap, but that is no excuse for crappy food. Why isn't there a local one near me???? This place has an interesting concept. As long as you order their entrees, you get unlimited sides, salads and desserts. Now, I was about to pass this whole unlimited thing when I first came here. But lo and behold, they actually have really good sides. For my entree, I got the country fried steak. It is humongous. I was only able to eat a third of it due to stuffing myself with their sides. So, I took it home with me for another day's lunch. Double-win! The service is also pretty good. Stopped here on a hunch and was delightfully surprised. There was a vegetable and dessert buffet that was absolutely delicious. Meat entries were separate. This place is obviously a favorite of the locals, tucked into a shopping center. It is well worth going a little out of your way to to dine. First time visitor and I would rate it as overall Excellent Price, Decent Food, and Good Waitress Service. The menu for selecting the food is not too extensive. The side bar and food was pretty good. I had the country fried steak, it lacked a bit of flavor on the gray that was on top of it. However, my partner had the chicken tenders and they were nice and crisp, great honey mustard sauce. Went for buffet breakfast after an early appointment on Mon Oct 30 2017. Very disappointing! Bacon was not crisp, scrambled eggs were rubbery, hash browns & pastries not fully cooked. Having been shown to our booth and poured coffee, our waitress disappeared and no refills offered.Thought nothing could go wrong with the ice cream but no, the machine had not been switched on and delivered a non-frozen liquid. read more

Good southern style foods and sides! Service is good, for a mostly young wait staff. Don't expect 5 star dinner or dining for what you are paying, expect simple good food that has flavor and sticks to your ribs. I was looking forward to some southern cooking and especially a favorite of mine, chicken livers. CC has a good size salad bar, some made on permises rolls, and a dessert bar, all included in the price. The price was very good but unfortunately the chicken livers were terrible. I am not sure but they tasted as if they were cooked, frozen and then cooked again deep fried. They were dry, very crispy and no flavor. How hard is it to take fresh livers, rollin seasoned flour, egg wash, rolled in seasoned bread crumbs and deep fried or even an fried. This could have been a delicious dish. The white gravy was a powder mixed sauce, no flavor and too thick. Even if they used a gravy mix they could have used seasoning, chicken stock, a little sage, a bay leaf some garlic. The fries were hot, also frozen. Service was perfunctory, mostly teenagers. The sald bar and desset bar were a 2 ** but because the chix livers were so bad I could only give a 1* . read more

I've actually dubbed this place Country Slop. This is the thing - the food is sub-par, but the prices are very cheap. The only thing in all honesty that I enjoyed on the dinner buffet was the dinner rolls. I actually enjoy the breakfast buffet in the morning though. Not the best, but everything is at least ok. We left the restaurant needing to find a place to eat. on the pro side: The staff taking care of the food bar did keep it very neat and clean. So our meal started with the waitress dumping a full sized soda over our 6 year olds head.... She laughed while she apologized repeatedly. My husband took him to the restroom while they moved our table. There were 2 other families in the restaurant at this time everyone in the store saw what happened. She then took our order as we ordered buffet we thought meat was included....Nope. So we then ordered a steak to share and a shrimp skewer for our oldest son. Fast forward to an hr later, no manager came to address the soda incident, no help, and our waitress disappeared. We have no meat still. It took no time to decide its time to go. My husband went to address the bill, and stated that we had no food would not be paying for it and expressed his concern about the soda issue. They apologized but told us they had to still charge us for our buffet (husband and myself), because kids eat free on Mondays...they were in fact free. After his astonishment he stated that we would be leaving a review and could not believe such poor customer service. It has become a ritual for me to come to this location every monday when im off work to get their delicious breakfast. I would like to recognize Thelma. She always checks me out and is really on top of things. I always get carry out in a small box and soon as I walk through the door Thelma is handing me my small box to fill up. Wow! We just happened to stop here on our way back from Shanandoah to D.C. We stopped on Memorial Day and kids ate free (every Monday). The lunch and entree options were plenty with the lunch options less than $10 which included the buffet (salad, soup, sides and desserts) which was awesome! We might drive out from D.C. just to eat here. The $18 total cost (not including tip) for our family of 5 would have been $75 in D.C. The service was awesome!! Came at 8:00am and food looked like it had been on the bar since last night. Unfortunately it tasted like it too. They specialize in cold and tasteless food coming from a hot bar. I happened to be in Culpeper early in the morning with my daughter and we felt the urge to have some breakfast. We found this place and I was really amazed by their breakfast menu. The buffet style for only $6.99..!!!! You can't beat that. The service was good and the waiter kept asking if we found everything okay. Keep up the good work folks.
