We enjoyed our dinner - I had gone back and forth between some nice sounding meat options and finally was swayed by the wine to go with crab cakes and grilled shrimp. The flavors were good, but the crab cake was a bit overdone. Wayne enjoyed a creole rockfish - although it was a bit lacking in the creole spice. We had a really good small caesar and each thoroughly enjoyed a baked potato - done just right - the potato was the star of the meal - as well as the Barboursville Chardonnay. After being up in SNP I decided to head on over to Silk Mill. I was craving a burger all day, yet the crab cake & grilled shrimp combo spoke to me, in the end went with a smokehouse burger. The bacon was not crispy, rather limp and sad. The burger was cooked well. The fries were soggy, limp and lackluster. Service was great but overall, it was meh. If you're in town and you're looking for a nice place to eat this is where you wanna go. Historically if you want to come for a holiday (like Mother's Day) probably would recommend a reservation. High-backed booths for a private feel, table and chairs for bigger parties or disability seating and seating in the back bar area and side banquet rooms. We (myself, my wife and our 2 year old son) visited several months back and had a good experience. Unfortunately, we visited for a second time today, and it was a much worse experience. We walked in and the restaurant was about half full. We asked to be seated, and also asked for a high chair. The hostess told us she would get us a high chair, but instead she then just sat us at a table and went back to the front. My wife is then standing there holding our son, so I had to walk around to find a high chair (which I eventually did). We then waited for about 6-7 minutes at our table, and no one stopped by to even introduce themselves or ask if we wanted anything to drink. I went up to the front and an older lady was standing up there. I wasn't even sure if she worked there, so I started looking around for the hostess and she said "I asked someone to go to your table they should be by soon" and pointed towards a waitress who was taking an order from another table. I then sat down and we waited for a few more minutes. I expected that the waitress would finish taking that order, then walk over ten feet and talk to us. However, I looked up and she had vanished. I then got up and saw the hostess just standing there, so I explained that we had been at our table for about 10 minutes and no one has even stopped by. Before she could even address my concern, that other lady quickly walked over and blurted out "I told you that someone would come over to your table!" She could have said "Has no one come over yet? Ok, I'll go track someone down for you." Instead, she decided to snap at me in a very rude manner. I told her to just forget it because we would go somewhere else snd we left. We then went to a restaurant down the street called Spoon and Spindle where the waitress stopped by after 30 seconds, and got our food in 10 minutes. read more

Refused service this evening due to having a service dog. The women at the front is wildly misinformed. I took the liberty of contacting the health department. Just as a heads up, i am not required to present you with documentation of my canine. There is no real database which service dogs are listed. If you see documentation, That most likely isn't a real service dog. She requested to be served this evening I would have to put my cardiac alert dog in the car, my life is more important, we politely declined. I have had my service dog for 4 years and have NEVER been treated this way before..... Edit: heard back from the health department, whom are personal friends. Virginia Food Code follows the FDA Food Code & it follows the ADA. See photo attached. Stopped for a late lunch while out running errands. My wife had the Santa Fe chicken salad sandwich, which she didn't really care for. I had the Weaver's melt sandwich, which was pretty good. The sour dough bread was a bit greasy, but other than that it tasted pretty good. Because it was a bit late for lunch, around 2pm, it wasn't very busy. Invited here by friends on a snowy Sunday for brunch! First thing I noticed the place was empty so we had no problem finding tables and seats for a group of 10! I am sure the hostess and wait staff was glad to customers. The appetizer, spinach dip was excellent. The ice tea/lemonade mix was absolutely refreshing and delicious! I put in our order of Steak omelet with sourdough toast and potatoes and the food arrived within 10 minutes. We received a generous portion of everything. It was excellent, I thought the omelet was a little runny and perhaps not fully cooked but overall it tasted good. I thought after receiving the food perhaps I should order something else. I did not think what I had ordered was epic. However, the other folks who were with us really enjoyed their food. So it could be an excellent place. Since I have been taken out by someone else to be treated, I did not want to change the order midstream. The wait staff was excellent and very helpful. I would certainly try this place again! Silk Mill is a staple restaurant in Orange that my family has been going to for years. Servers are wonderful people, but the service could be better. Had to wait over 2 hours for food in one case, which was very frustrating. Not to mention it was very slow that day, so my family and I were extremely dissatisfied. When I did receive my meal, (Chicken Alfredo) I found it to taste very bland and unseasoned. Whole experience was disappointing. Since then, I haven't had any memorable or extraordinary meals from this restaurant. It is a suitable spot to eat, but there are better choices out there if you're visiting Orange for the day. read more

We caught a glimpse of the sign for the restaurant while driving to a friend's house. We made reservations and after picking our friends up, drove over to the restaurant. The staff is very friendly, and our server, Diana, took great care of us. Plentiful options on the menu made it difficult to choose, but I went with the seafood scampi. I was not disappointed! The food was plentiful in the serving sizes, and the drinks were good as well (try the Lost in Paradise). Everything was absolutely great and we enjoyed the experience. The funny thing to me was that our friends, who live about 30 minutes from the restaurant, has never seen the sign for it prior to our finding it! Highly recommended! read more

Very long wait for our food, we got there at 6pm, drinks were ordered by 6:45, dinner was not ordered until 7, waitress was not very polite, the food came out around 8-8:30 was cold, mixed up and not the best at all. One of the servers boxed the customer order in our party with her bare hands-no gloves. The 3 hours that was spent in there was crazy, it was not busy, hardly no one in the restaurant and they just could not get it together. Probably my last time there. My husband ordered the Alfredo with an order of chicken and shrimp. Both my husband and I said it was the best Alfredo we have ever ordered! A hop, skip and a jump from Gordonsville, and a historic landmark, this unusual and fascinating restaurant is quite a sight! Repurposed from an abandoned silk mill from the 1930's, this amazing structure now hosts a humongous, casual dining hall in was once the weaving department of the mill. With its high ceilings, architectural design, deep wood flooring and mill equipment décor, you will not only enjoy a nice, but will also get a little history lesson. I walked around the place and was awestruck its rich history and atmosphere. It was rather dim lit, which added to its mystic, but truth be told, we were in such a dark corner we couldn't read the menu! We asked to be moved to a little brighter spot. The offerings are your typical American fare, steaks, meatloaf, burgers, sandwiches, with some seafood, pasta, and chicken options. I had a yummy burger with meh fries (the fries would be better fresh cut) and my friend enjoyed her beef tips and baked potato. We also had the spinach dip with chips which was scrumptious. The prices were decent and check out the bar area in the back. The hostess can be a bit more welcoming, if possible I suggest you make a reservation. We went there spur of the moment, without one, and were given quite the stink eye. The service was a little slow and not as efficient as I'm used to, but our server was pleasant. This is the second time me and the wife have went to this place. The first time we went, my wife got one drink and they ran out of her drink of choice. I had ordered a strawberry sangria and the strawberries had mold on them. We waited for an hour after ordering for our food to get to the table so by then we had to take it to go. We waited a few months and gave it another go. We took my father in-law with us and pretty much we had the same experience. I ordered a draft beer and it came out flat and warm. My wife ordered a steak quesadilla and it came out as a chicken quesadilla. My father in-law order the salmon and it came out raw and we still had to wait an hour for our food to get to the table. The only reason that I am giving two stars is because they took my wife's quesadillas off the tab. They told us that they had two cooks quit on them and they only had one left to cook and he went outside 3 time while we were there to smoke a cigarette. There was only a hand full of people in the restaurant so it should not have made a difference having only one cook. For the prices they charge, you would think it would be a much better experience. Never again will we be back in their establishment and would not recommend it to anyone that I know or anyone else for that matter. read more

I really wanted to love Silk Mill Grille. The location is a re-purposed silk mill, its decoration is quasi-industrial chic, it's located in Orange VA which is a really quaint, historic town in the wilds of Virginia and - after all - it was the only restaurant that we could find that was still open on a late Sunday night. However, it just misses the mark on all points - some by a hair, some by more than that. The decor that looked so cool on the website is really junk store stuff hung randomly throughout the cavernous dining rooms. The atmosphere was slightly uncomfortable - too big, too open, not enough warmth and comfort. The service was - well - odd. They switched between 2 different servers and made a big deal of talking about it several times as if they were doing us a favor. To be fair, just after my party of 8 arrived to an empty dining room, two more parties, each bigger than my party, arrived too. So, I think our server was overwhelmed. But even before the rush she was struggling. The new server was likewise just okay and - to top it off - she bad-mouthed the 1st server. The food was okay, some of it even good - but none of it was great. The French onion soup (one of my bellweather dishes) was strangely acidic and spicy (hot sauce???). It was okay but definitely not great. The 3 appetizers arrived with no plates or utensils to eat them with - and the crab dip (which was a strong "good" in my opinion) had nothing to dip it with EXCEPT for the bread bowl it was served in. Strange! The chicken was good, the burgers were good, the French fries were good, the wild rice was dry. We were all extra hungry so the quality of the food did not deter us from eating or enjoying the food. But, in the final analysis, this is not a place that I would ever rush to return to and I cannot recommend it for any reason. I am sorry because I really wanted to like it. read more

However that's the problem, if you order food for takeout the orders are filled late or filled on time but nobody knows where your order is . If you go sit down and eat there the employees are 50/50 either they are perfect or they are rude . The whole place is on or off absolutely no consistency other than being habitually inconsistent. I have been scolded because my order was wrong I have waited over half an hour for food that was ready and misplaced I've gotten attitude because I only tipped 20 percent on takeout. The other side is I've been there while feeling under the weather and been given extra drinks without asking . This business just has a very bipolar personality. Potato skins were delicious; however, while the French onion soup had good flavor, it came with chunks of bread, globs of mozzarella, and was not not baked and served with cheese pouring over the sides. Caesar salad was over-dressed--I kept hunting and pecking for leaves not drenched in salad dressing; but, my ribeye was tasty and cooked to my request--medium rare--and dessert was very tasty. A lot of food for a fair price, you just need to be lucky enough to pick the right things.
