We had a very pleasant dining experience on Friday May 17th. Jeanetta was fantastic and arranged last minute to accommodate our very large party of 18 people. Nate was one of our "Star" servers, sorry, I don't remember the name of our other server, but she was also great and a good picture taker! We actually found this place when inquiring about where to eat while visiting Gordonsville . It's about 10-12 mins up the road. This is a unique restaurant. At one time it was an actual working Mill. See my picture of the story behind this Mill . This place has large rooms to accommodate any size group . There are 2 dining area and a huge bar area in the back . Steak and Seafood seems to be their specialty's . The prices are extremely reasonable . Our food was delicious. They had a variety of desserts but we were to full to even think about it . I did ask if any were homemade and unfortunately our waitress said No . I do think some areas could use some more lighting . Certain areas are very dimly lit . Ate there last night (Wednesday night). I made reservations based on other comments here. They weren't needed. There were only a couple other tables occupied and a large group in a back room. The staff was pleasant and the menu provided several options. I settled on a filet mignon with the veg of the day (broccoli). The steak was cooked perfectly and the broccoli was tasty (unusual for steamed veggies). We were a party of 5 and everyone enjoyed their meal, one even taking home leftovers. I can't review the food because we never got that far. We made a reservation, arrived at that time and the hostess confirmed with us when we got there. Then we waited for a full 20 minutes while several other parties were greeted and seated. Finally when we asked how much longer it would be, she said "oh you have a reservation?" We went for a Sunday lunch. I have been craving a burger, we needed to be in Orange so my husband suggested Silk Mill. We saw the help wanted sign so when service was slow we understood. But...a very big BUT we sat there for over 15 mins and no one came to our table. And when I say no one I mean no one. I could see that there were regulars in there and everyone seemed happy. But servers came by the tables around us checking on customers and getting orders but none said anything to us. We left. The hostess told us to have a good day. My suggestion to staff and managers you should always acknowledge customers whether you have time to serve them or not just let them know you know there are there. They might stick around and satisfy their cravings. read more

Stopped in there on my way to Farmville on Friday after the storm. It's avery large restaurant with two large dinings rooms, a private dining room and an expansive bar area. I had the BBQ sandwich which was OK. Very clean and nice staff. Very quick service Friday for lunch. read more

My Medium rare Prime rib was medium to well, tough no flavor meat... probably worst prime rib I ever had in my life. Chicken with cheese and Alfredo was also tough. French onion had too much salt and not enough cheese, normally baguette is on the top but this French onion had bread underneath cheese and very soggy. Entrees were terrible butt desserts weren't bad. Banana foster cake was good and chocolate mouse cake wasn't so light but more like cheesecake consistency still good. Food, service and environment were very good. After eating lunch, I ordered a salad to take back to the hotel. Checking the salad after leaving, there were no shrimp on it, that I ordered, plus I ordered vinegar and oil, got vinegar, but no oil. What we have here is failure to communicate! Never had anything I didn't like from here! I love their Santa Fe salad and when people come into town this is usually the place we go. Work lunches are usually here as well! They've got all kinds of cool antiques on the wall, big bar, and a small quaint sitting area outside as well. Service is always good, sometimes not the fastest, but they all do a great job. Went here for New Year's Eve and it was great! No hassle in getting a reservation same night and the food was fantastic! I got the chicken Alfredo with mixed vegetables and it was delightfully smooth. Our waitress was very nice and attentive and man were the drink deals great! Wine was usual $7 and up for a glass but beer was as cheap as $3.50. We ended up getting a pitcher of Devils Backbone for $13. Amazing. If coming back to Orange I would definitely stop by. read more

In Orange helping set up for an event at Madison at the Mill and based some lunch. This place is just a short walk from there. Very unassuming when you enter. Traditional booth and table seating with a bar in the back room. To my surprise there was a Golden Tee game in the back. I've spent more money on Golden Tee then a care to mention, but I love it. I would come back just for the game. Food was just fine. We had a large group and we were given good service. The special was Salmon, but wasn't there favorite of some. I've eaten here a number of times and each time I go I hope that things will improve. the food is OKAY but the service is very bad. We had lunch there a few days ago and we waited a LONG time for someone to take our order. And then another long time before we got our food. The wait stuff is GRUFF and act put out if you ask for extra water. Our waitress disappeared for a while and we asked another waitress for help and she seemed quite indignant that we asked. Also, our waitress had on some REALLY strong-smelling perfume that actually made me nauseated every time she walked by our table. So, not sure what the problem is -- understaffed wait staff? Poor training? Lack of leadership? There are not many choices in Orange, I wish they would get their act together. read more

I went here as I had a wedding to attend in the area. The rehearsal dinner and the groomsman luncheon occurred here. For the luncheon I got the club sandwich with fries. It was very standard. The fries were just literally just frozen fries thrown in the frier....not the greatest. we also had dessert, one blackberry cobbler and one pineapple upside down cake. Both were completely store bought and horrible. The cobbler was mostly crust and the upside down cake was mostly cake and hardly any pineapple. First time at Silk Mill, the decor was great and has great back story but ends there. The wait staff did not take time to talk about the menu. We order the creole rockfish and the crab cake and shrimp with salad and baked potato. The salad arrived and it was very cold and frozen on the bottom. The rest of meal came out and looked good on the plate. The rockfish was cold and overcooked. If you like to eat rubber bands this is how the rockfish was cooked. The shrimp on my wife dish was also cool but tasted good, but crab cake was uncooked in the middle. We only ate half of main dish. The only good thing was the baked potato. Asked to talk to manger and states that there was no manager on duty but could talk to head kitchen person.There was help from talking to him. I often visit family in this part of Virginia so I decided to try it since it's just up the road. My Uncle told me that it used to be a night club and you can tell that it could have been because there is a lot of space. The decor and atmosphere is somewhere between Cracker Barrell and a local steak house. We have been here twice. The first time was decent. My Uncle really enjoyed their what I believe was called a Southwest burger. I ordered soup and a salad the first time and their chicken pasta Alfredo the second time which was a large portion but not fantastic. The issue here is one, with the service. The second time we arrived it took I know at least 10 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge our existence. What's more irritating is that a group of waitresses were standing around conversing and knew we were there. No greeting, no "I'll be there in just a minute." They just stood around talking without even looking our way. Second, I feel the web site is deceitful. It really doesn't present the place for what it is. It gives a feel of a more hip, trendy place and the menu isn't even accurate. They charge way too much to be something they aren't. Next time I'm in the area I will try one of the other restaurants because I can forgive almost anything besides neglectful service. read more

This restaurant is in an old silk mill, and they do a good job of keeping the history alive. The service was pleasant, if a bit intermittent. My husband really enjoyed his French onion soup and chicken main course, and my daughter thought her grilled cheese was even delicious. I wavered between 3 and 4 stars, because my Caesar salad with steak was completely drowning in literal pools of dressing. Luckily they had put the steak and croutons on after the dressing so I was able to eat a bunch of that - and the steak was quite good! I guess in the end I should have thought to ask for the dressing on the side, so that wasn't totally their fault. read more
