We were staying in Washington, VA and this place was just a short drive away into the even more quieter countryside. Everyone was so personable from the minute we walked into this elegant manor house. Cocktails and conversation were on point. The dinner service just flowed effortlessly like a well thought out symphony -- each dish took us to a higher level of culinary bliss as we were lulled by the expertly paired wines. Owner/Chef Dane stopped by our table at the end of meal and was so delightful to talk with. We had a terrible storm during the dinner service, apparently a tree went across the road nearby and knocked out their internet service preventing them from being able to check us out at the end of the evening. Their response -- don't worry about it all -- we will just give you a ring sometime tomorrow and take care of it; what more could you ask for -- just classy in every way!!! read more

Charming manor in the country. My wife and I were celebrating our 15th and I've been to the ILW several times and great, wanted to try something new and different. I was pleasantly surprised by the Houndstooth. We booked a 7pm reservation on Toc and mentioned some food allergies and items we liked and they created a beautiful menu. See attached. Our first course was an asparagus salad with grapefruit that really had much more flavor than I was expecting, paired perfectly with a Muscadet. The second course was a chilled split pea soup with orzo and Lobster. My wife does not like Split Pea and the only place she has ever liked it was at ILW, this was great especially paired with the Ryan Patrick Chardonnay. The wine was dry not oaky and loved it. The third course was a bass and shrimp lightly fried on risotto with Serrano peppers that was delicious. My favorite wine of the evening was the Portuguese Mapreco. I had a second glass. Mind you I'm an Italian Red fan and these were all whites up to this point, loved each one. The chef took him time pairing these. My favorite course was a Brioche wrapped Beef Wellington, Ramsay would be proud. So good! Black truffle purée with a Bordeaux ended the savory menu perfectly. What was very nice was that you got an ample pour vs a tasting pour. Our dessert was a sample of items. Playing and presentation matters to this chef. Chef Dane then spoke to us for a good 10 minutes telling us his story and background. It's very personal for him and you can tell the passion and love he puts into his cooking to delight his guests. I highly recommend everyone coming out to this beautiful property. I would, however, next time stay the night at the Glen Gordon Manor bit more of a drive than I wanted after dinner. The manor is south of Front Royal on 522 and is gorgeous, quiet and you definitely feel like you can relax and enjoy yourself. read more

An evening at Houndstooth Restaurant is likely to be one that sticks in your memory for quite some time. As you drive up to the restaurant (located inside Glen Gordon Manor), you are immediately immersed into an enchanting rural setting, one that becomes even more charming when you set foot inside. The manor itself is gorgeous, with artistic flourishes coexisting with dim, firelit halls, and luxurious dining spaces. It is the people, though, that give this place its true warmth. Dayn, the owner and head chef, was incredibly pleasant and welcoming, and even gave us a tour of the manor pre-meal. Our servers were also caring and attentive, putting us at ease with genuine smiles, and allowing us to comfortably enjoy a multi-hour 5 course dinner while watching the sunlight turn to dusk from our window views in the lounge. The food itself was consistently at a high level, with a Chocolate Egg dessert (no doubt a purposeful choice ahead of Easter) a standout, both in terms of creativity and variety (the egg itself consisted of white chocolate mousse surrounding a passion fruit curd and encased in a milk chocolate shell, and with sides of cherry sorbet & pistachio cake). A Truffle Potato Leak soup was also a star, with the creamy and piping hot potato leak puree well balanced with a cooler creme fraiche foam and topped with shaved truffles (that the chef himself shaved at our table). Overall, Houndstooth, as one of the few fine dining options in rural Virginia, is one of the best, and when you aren't sure whether you will more fondly remember the food, the service, or the setting, you know you have had an evening that will be well remembered. read more

Progressively more extravagant, and progressively more flavorful. Houndstooth's unique atmosphere and flavors will leave you in everlasting awe of the chef and his creativity. The white chocolate mousse and passion fruit egg had other guests asking if the egg was real and how much of it was edible (because it looked so realistic)! While the dessert dish was my favorite, each preceding dish was a standout as well. I cannot tell you how many times I've had octopus that was a little too chewy or borderline rubbery. I thought that was what octopus was supposed to taste like! At Houndstooth, the octopus was insanely tender, cooked to perfection! I also loved the chimichurri sauce and mini potato chips, both of which were outstanding flavor complements and texture complements to the octopus. And regarding the salad, wow. Just wow. So may times, I've been to a restaurant that has tried to incorporate a lot of different ingredients into a meal. The end result is usually a dish that looks great but feels detached from each ingredient, making you wonder, what was the point? Usually, I find a more holistic approach, where all ingredients can be incorporated into one spoonful/forkful, is better. But not in the case of the salad. The salad was clearly a dish that was cut into thirds, each third distinct and equally enjoyable, without any guesswork on the part of the diner. I knew just what to do when I received the meal, and my taste buds knew just how to rejoice when they experienced the meal. The beef tenderloin was amazing, the shaved truffle atop the leek-based soup was amazing. The customer service, from our waitress to the owner (who wound up taking us on a tour throughout the property), was incredible. If you're looking for the perfect dining experience, alongside perfect views of Shenandoah National Park, Houndstooth is a must. You will not be disappointed. read more

AMAZING. Wonderful. Superb service coupled with fine dining made this event extraordinary. It is expensive but you get what you pay for. Seating is a 7 and everyone gets the same 5 course meal. We opted for the optional wine pairing with each course and are glad we did. Chef Dane Smith hit everything out of the park. We stated with a cocktail in the parlour by a roaring fire. At 7 they seated us. Course #1--Roasted Sunchoke salad, paired with a nice French Sauvignon. #2 Roasted Red Peper Soup, paired with a French Chardonnay. Both were perfect! #3 Seared Scollops, Mediterranean, paired with a Portugues Rose. It was fabulous. #4 Strips of Sirloin with a truffler sause, paired with an Italian Red blend. Cooked perfectly. #5 Creme Chocolate "Noisette", higlighted by Cafe bustelo ice cream. Back at the fire, an appertif capped the evening. BTW: we stayed there in a marvellous room--gien the rich food and wine pairings, not a bad plan. Wonderful manor, great staff and definitely a special place. read more

This restaurant is located within the Glen Gordon Manor, main lodge, which is an historic inn. The chef is Dayn Smith and he does an amazing job with menus, prep and presentation. The service offered by the various staff is nothing less than perfect! The venue is gorgeous, with several areas to dine, such as a beautiful private dining room overlooking their stable. On the evening we dined, we were celebrating a special birthday and Dayn worked with us on what would be best for the entrée. Each of the 5 courses we enjoyed we perfectly plated, like a work of art and the combination of ingredients created a truly amazing dish. They offer a wine pairing for a very fair price, but we chose to buy individual bottles instead. This was fun, as they have a large cellar with many bottles available and fair prices as well. They also have a full bar and do an excellent job creating cocktails. The price for a 5-course dinner is extremely fair, especially considering the other popular places to dine in the area which are significantly more, even though one of those is a 3 Michelin Star restaurant, I'd highly suggest giving Dayn's culinary skills a try! Dayn's brother, Trevor assists and does an outstanding job with his baking skills! (Their milk rolls are unbelievable!) We stayed two nights at the Glen Gordon Manor and were fortunate to be able to enjoy an amazing 3-course gourmet breakfast each day. The food is prepared with local, farm-fresh ingredients, including honey from their own beehives, eggs layed daily by their own hens and pork belly smoked in-house. These breakfasts were just as beautiful to look at as they were tasty to eat! Coffee and amazing breads came with them. We definitely will return!! read more

So, we picked the hotel for the size and that it haves a full service restaurant. The restaurant was very nice and fun experience. My only removal of a star would be to have an al la cart menu and some choices within the main menu. If you stay three nights and eat three nights at the hotel, they do a good job to not repeat options but there are chances you'll run into ingredients from each night. read more

Can't say enough great things about this restaurant, tucked away inside a glorious manor turned bed-and-breakfast. Especially after eating at the nearby Inn at little Washington, which for me was a colossal disappointment. Way overpriced, and left the table still hungry. But this fixed-price, high end restaurant was very different. Fabulous wine pairings, so I would definitely recommend adding this. Dinner was 5 delicious courses, artichoke soup, lamb, beet, goat cheese, cucumber (probably leaving out a few ingredients here) salad. one of the courses was sea scallops, which I couldn't eat because of a food allergy, and the substitution was potatoes shaped just like the scallops...so creative and delicious! Needless to say, we will be back..the rooms look so nice too). Forget Inn at Little Washington. Come here for half the price and a better meal. read more

I've been to Houndstooth at least a dozen times over the past ten years and always enjoyed an excellent experience. I was there last night with two others, and was pleasantly surprised to see that Dayne and Nancy Smith have upped their already formidable game. The five course meal was memorably delicious, and the presentation was better than any other meal there I can recall. We sat on the porch, and had wonderful views of the property, including their chickens ranging around the yard. Service was very attentive without being intrusive, and the wines were perfectly matched to each course. I look forward to going back as often as possible. read more
