From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to make the celebration memorable, even personalizing the menu with a thoughtful "Congratulations Graduate!" message for Elliott. That small touch meant so much to our family. The food was absolutely delicious, the service impeccable (as we've come to expect), and their attention to dietary restrictions was spot on. Field and Main offers upscale dining in Marshall and that is welcomed. You feel like you are in a house and there are different rooms. I ordered the bison and it was cooked as I had requested. The bison was tender and had a flavorful seasoning. The cocktail, which was a version of an old fashion, was decent but I think I would order something else. Service was pleasant and efficient. Look, the service and ambiance is an easy five stars. The staff understand a great dining experience needs inviting and pleasant servers. We were in the main hall which was tastefully decorated and softly illuminated. I have no doubt the food is as fresh from farm to table as it gets, but the main course and potatoes side just did not do it for me. Just isn't high on the flavor index. Went back last week to meet friends for a pre-holiday meal and this place still kills. The oomami smash burger in the app menu is still a go to, and I also had the lamb rsgu campanelle pasta, which was amazing. The Feast Cookie is still a solid dessert choice but it is now cookie crumbles and not a whole cookie. Still delicious but that was the only knock on the whole night. Our server, Kyle, was super polite and around just enough without hovering. All in all, an awesome night at one of our favorite spots. read more

But not overly salted. Limited menu, nothing for me other than a hamburger from the appetizer menu (I made it a double). Our server warned the chicken confit was salty so I avoided that. Could only image how salty that was compared to everything else... Pretty expensive dinner for $175- we regretted not going to Ashby. My husband and I dined her for our wedding anniversary. It's a wonderful spot for special occasions without completely breaking the bank. We sat in the main dining area, right by the open kitchen. Our server was cheerful and helpful. I wish I remembered his name! I think it was Andrew (definitely started with an A) but I could be wrong. The food wasnt particularly creative but it was all well executed. The bread was honestly my favorite part of the meal. It has a wonderful, smokey flavor to it. After the bread, soup, and my pasta, I was stuffed to the gills. Outside of the bathrooms, there is poster paper with questions and markers to write your own responses. It added a fun, relaxed element to the restaurant (and gives patrons something to do while waiting for the restroom!). Truly a 12/10 experience, even though Yelp is on a 5 star rating system. Beats any restaurant I've gone to in major cities. Book a private cabana where you get a very unique and Internet experience with your party. They even let dogs inside the indoor cabanas! The service is next level and understanding of any dietary restrictions or needs that you may have. Every single bite that I took was absolutely incredible. My husband arranged this special dinner as a mini-celebration after our recent wedding, and it exceeded our expectations. We were fortunate to sit at the chef's counter , which gave us a front-row view of the kitchen in action. Watching the chefs at work added a unique and engaging element to our dining experience. The tasting menu offered a well-rounded selection of flavors, and if you appreciate wine then the pairing is highly recommended! I just had my wedding dinner at Field & Main. it was so beautiful. In fact, when we decided we were going to get married, the first thing on my lift was that I wanted to eat here. Our waitress was so attentive to our huge party, and all of our food came out hot and on time, and served at the same time. I chose the chef's counter experience at Field & Main to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we were blown away by the meal and wine pairings. Each wine carefully balanced the flavors of the meal and brought out the flavors of both the ingredients in the dish and the wine. Our server was so knowledgeable and just as excited about the food and wine as we were. At the end of our meal when we thanked the chef for the amazing meal, he shared his thoughts on our favorite courses...the continuous evolution of the duck entree until it was just right with the wonderful berry jus, how he transformed the strawberries to add umami flavor to the dish...it made me appreciate the meal even more as not only a form of art but thoughtful care. What an outstanding restaurant away from the northern Virginia craziness! Located on the Main Street in Marshall, VA you'll get a wonderful menu of locally sourced food. The menu items were delicious. They offer local wine and wonderful craft cocktails. The I'm Perfect was perfect!! The noise level is average the ambiance is quaint with some different options in room seating. They seem to have outdoor dining options for when the weather allows. We came here for my 28th bday dinner! I had heard great things from coworkers who love this local gem! Reservations are a hot commodity and it seems this location is only open Thursday- Sunday for dinner. Menu is printed daily with some selections that stay on the menu and other new creations. The chefs are young and true visionaries!!!! We met one in passing and when I looked at the menu I was pleasantly surprised at some flavor profiles I hadn't seen or tried before (like fresh apples and mussels??? VERY good) The sign out front is beautiful but you need to park in the back and walk in through the back. Seems some road work was being conducted the night we went. The hostess was pleasant but I have to say our server was not the most welcoming. Some offhanded comments didn't sit well with me, but the food made up for it. While we waited for our food a kind server came in with an appetizer of a cold gazpacho to try! They have some elevated details like little towel "pellets" to drop in hot water to create a hot hand towel. Also- since it was my birthday we got to sample a rose wine :) Our meal was to die for. We ordered a LOT! I had to try it all!!! We ordered the white wine and apple steamed mussels (I literally wanted to drink the sauce), we ordered a mini burger (really wasn't mini and looked pretty boring but my boyfriend described it as the best burger he's ever had- wagyu beef with perfect fatty ratio and a bacon jam that knocked his socks off) honestly both of these appetizers prob would be filling enough....if you weren't a foodie like me We also ordered the corn bread pudding for the table. I've never tried anything like it, very moist and full of tender sweet corn. For our entrees, I ordered a cashew crusted black bass with Jerusalem artichokes (they call them sunchokes) I've never had a sun choke but it was pretty good, kind of like a potato artichoke heart hybrid in texture. The fish was flaky and cooked to perfection. The crusting was perfectly executed. The sauce was amazing. My boyfriend ordered the bison steak with farrow and collard greens. Everything about that entree was BEYOND incredible. He also ordered a side crab cake that was full of lump meat and seasoned very well. This experience was one I will never forget. I have referred friends here for thier special events. I noticed it was doggie friendly :) the outdoor cabanas were a cool concept for privacy. I liked the barn doors. It was great they were heated for a chilly evening meal. However, the table and the chairs did not meet the elevated standard, seemed like regular outdoor furniture when everything else was top notch. Slight miss in the furniture. The setting of the restaurant was great. I loved the old building with the different rooms. My partner and I tried "The Present Menu." I enjoyed it but I was a little underwhelmed because of all the hype about this restaurant. For example, the first dish was Grilled and Chilled Asparagus with Spicy Pickled Strawberries, Whipped Goat Cheese and Red Buds. It was very good, not exceptional. I thought the Spicy Pickled Strawberries were a bit over the top, pretentious is the word that comes to mind. On this menu, the dish that was exceptional was the Pleasant Vale Pork Crepinette with Szechuan Demi-Glace, Pickled Wood Ears and Brined Bean Sprouts. The flavor of the pork blew me away. It seemed to melt in my mouth. The desert was Madeleines with Lemon Hibiscus Curd. I was disappointed. There was nothing exceptional or even great about this desert. It seemed like store-bought Madeleines with a little cream added. Our server was very helpful and informative of our inquiries about the food. I would give her a top-notch rating. However, we were seated next to the kitchen and there was tension. The chef in the front of the kitchen was calling out orders, BUT was also calling out insults at the other cooks! Let me say that the staff was amazing. Our server was top-notch, not stuffy, great sense of humor, especially b/c we ate in the cottages, and it was pouring rain! There were so many options for wonderful appetizers and entrees too. We had the beet salad, asparagus, and loaded potatoes as apps. All were fresh tasting, and so tasty. The sauce on the side of the asparagus was superb. I ad the trout which I will say was a tiny bit under-cooked for my liking, only because it felt a tad soft in my mouth but the broth and chickpeas were great. Everyone else really enjoyed theirs. Scallops, tenderloin, and pasta. So well done. While I loved the cottage experience, my only complaint is they have NO decor/ambience whatsoever. It's just a wood house with a cheap outdoor rug that looked like a yoga mat, four outdoor metal chairs, and a plastic-top table. Yes, I paid $56 for my entree, probably $500-600 for dinner, and it was all served with no tablecloth on a plastic gray table. This seemed very odd and off-brand for this restaurant and any fine dining experience in general. As an interior designer, I know you can make outdoor product look and feel good. Hospitality-grade fabrics, rugs, etc. are all available. This is an investment I would expect from this establishment, and was honestly shocked. The inside dining room was cute, still lower-end decor though. The bathrooms were probably the cutest and most appealing parts of the place. FOOD WAS GREAT THOUGH. read more

As you can see from my prior reviews this is one of my favorite restaurants for dinner especially when we can reserve their largest cabana for my family of seven including two young children. Their largest cabana is the last cabana down the walkway with their parking lot behind the rear of the cabana. We had this largest cabana the last time we visited in December when it was very cold. The weather was quite nice when we visited here, therefore the cabana experience was again very nice. They made some improvements to the cabana. We had a 5:00 dinner reservation. I started with and enjoyed my usual two red lanterns for $14 each or $28 total. We shared and enjoyed their bread board for $12. I also enjoyed their spicy miso ramen with caramelized pork, shiitake mushrooms, cilantro, scallions, crispy tofu, bok choy and egg for $25. We also shared a bottle of Boxwood Trellis 2020 red wine for $59. My total bill was $445 excluding gratuity. Crystal M. was our excellent professional server. Her knowledge of all of the menu items was above average. Crystal M. was one of our best mature servers here recently. I highly recommend Crystal M. If I owned a restaurant I would hire Crystal M. for more than just a server. We will continue to return here for dinner especially if we can request Crystal M. to serve our cabana. read more

My wife and I went to Field & Main for a special occasion and they were more than equal to the task. The Present Menu was a delightful succession of courses of seasonal offerings creatively arrayed and beautifully paired with choice Virginia and other world wines. The wait staff worked seamlessly to keep the whole affair moving nicely -- never rushed and never dragging: just right. And we got to meet a lot of the staff, who were friendly and engaging without being familiar. They all worked hard to make the evening great for us, ad yet they projected effortlessness and happy teamwork. We're going back soon. Of all recent restaurant experiences, Field & Main elicited the most diverse assessments from my dining party trio. I thought it was delicious, upscale, a little snooty but beautiful. My wife thought the food was too bland, too pretentious, and came away unimpressed. The middle-schooler liked her meatloaf entree but was completely skeeved out by the natural vegetable drinks. I started the meal with "craft cocktail" a pricey drink but one I will remember enjoying for years. (Sad to say I didn't note the name, but I think it was Zea Mays Harvest?) My dining companions got lemonades. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our drinks, especially after enduring the traffic out on I-66 that diverted us back into this little town in the first place. We were seated in a little one-table dining house set up for all-season dining, with a roof and windows and a heater. As with the food itself, this novel idea--possibly set up in response to something else that's novel, coronavirus--struck the three of us differently. I'll go with order of preference, like the fable: For mama bear, the setting was too remote and difficult to summon service, for Goldilocks-the-7th-grader, it was ok but nothing remarkable, but for papa bear (me), it was a delightful and private experience, and I found the service to be attentive, so I was happy. I also ordered a carrot juice. The intended recipient found it to be "planty and rotten smelling" like "v8 strained with out tomato". (Ah, to be 13 again.) I liked it. I can't give this place a unanimous recommendation from our little group, but it gets one from me. I see that the quality of cuisine coming out of the kitchen, the decor, and the menu fit right into the quaint and delightful vibes one finds in small towns within Washington DC's orbit of prosperity, places that bear little resemblance to the boarded-up and abandoned town centers further out on the map. read more

The kitchen is also small but worked very well together. We sat at the chef counter and had an amazing time. We walked in and were quickly escorted to the counter - we were the only ones at the counter as well. Our server was amazing and did an excellent job taking care of us. The food was amazing. Each dish was unique and had interesting flavors, and worked well. I did the wine pairing, and it worked very well together. I highly recommend stopping by or driving out if you're in NoVa for a dinner - and do that tasting menu, but we did watch other food being made and it all looked good so even if you don't do the tasting menu, there doesn't seem to be any bad choices! read more

Pretty bad experience. Party of 6 with a reservation in a cabana right at 5 pm when they opened. Arrived at 4:56 pm and the door to the reception was locked while the hostesses were right inside. We waited (with 2 elderly) in the cold until 5pm before they unlocked the door. We got to our cabana timely and ordered appetizers and the tasting menu. Kyle, our server was nice. Appetizers came right out along with drinks. First course then came out. All was good. Then the waiting began. It took almost 40 minutes for the next course. I had to go hunt down Kyle to ask what was up. He said he would check with the kitchen. Most of the rest of the courses came out fairly timely (but not fast enough) with the exception of dessert. They brought us chilled spoons and then we didn't see the dessert for 30 more minutes. Kyle was somewhat apologetic. At the end the manager came to aplologize. Said the kitchen just got slammed. Not sure how since we were the first reservation of the night. She told me she took a round of drinks off the bill. When I checked the receipt, she had actually only taken off 2 glasses of wine. That was $22 out of a bill of over $950. The food was good, but not as good as the last time we came. Compares below other tasting menu's we've done lately. We flat out love Field and Main indoors, outside, or via take out. Great for dinner and weekend brunch. They make some of the best biscuits around. Our latest experience started with the mixed local greens salad with Lindera Farm honey vinaigrette, shaved carrots & sunflower seeds. Super tasty, especially the vinaigrette where there honey adds flavor and takes some of the edge off the vinegar without making it sweet. My wife went with the duck confit leg with crispy polenta and a blueberry-arugula pesto. The duck was cooked perfectly with a crispy skin and fat rendered into the meat to make it juicy. The polenta was a perfect side and the pesto was amazing. I ordered the grilled pork chop with roasted turnips, garlic scapes & spring onion chimichurri. Note F&M uses a wood fire hearth and that smokiness came through nicely in this dish. Ended with the Feast chocolate chip cookie with chocolate sauce, a house made marshmallow, and vanilla ice cream. The was a feast - the size of this dessert really would be perfect for two. They have a great wine list including several Virginia favorites like Hodder Hill from Glen Manor and Liden's Hardscrabble. Very nice atmosphere and comfortable chairs in the dining area. Server was very attentive and helpful. Had Thanksgiving dinner here and found it a bit disappointing. Fantastic! This is my second visit to F&M. I reserved one of the cabanas so that our party could have a private dinner. We started with cocktails, I had the Left of Center which is a mezcal base with green chartreuse it was perfectly balanced. We ordered the hearth bread plate, the carrots, ceviche, fried brussel sprouts and the oomami burger split in four. The carrots and the Oomami were the stars. The flavor of the burger was incredible! For the entrees, we had the beef tenderloin, bison and the ladies had the scallops. It was silent for the first 4 minutes while everyone's first through fourth bites were bliss. The bison that I had cooked at medium rare was juicy and smoky. The broccoli was charred and smoked to perfection, the potatoes were just perfect (see pic). My wife had the scallops that were accompanied by a charred kale with some type of sweet potato purée that was cooked in beef fat, woah was it tasty! We added the corn bread pudding and potatoes with pimento as sides which the winner goes to the cream corn bread pudding. For dessert, we had the mousse (my favorite) the apple crisp and the cookie that's not a cookie with homemade marshmallow(2nd favorite). What I love about the restaurant is that while the star of each plate definitely is the star, the accompanying food all tastes as if they can be the stars as well. Then the combination together is like heaven in a bite. My guests really never had a meal like this and has vowed to be a part of the culinary journey. He was blown away. Is it a bit of a drive, sort of but from Herndon it's only 35 minutes which beats DC, the prices beat DC, and I love that I feel very safe walking around the small town afterwards. As a family with a toddler, this place makes it possible to have a great meal without worrying about disturbing others who are on special dates or out trying to have a quiet dinner. You can simply reserve one of the cabanas, and have a worry free dinner. The food is great, and the service is fantastic. The only knock I have is that for what you pay, the serving sizes can be a little on the small size. I get that this mirrors many places you could eat in DC or elsewhere, but being that it's in Marshall VA and is not crushed by constant crowds, I think it's great. Food was well prepared and presented, and the flavors/ingredients were on point. The break board was great, the dip was perfectly balanced. The OooMami Burger was incredible as were the CRISPY potatoes (which we almost going to pad on but glad we didn't). For our main entree's my boyfriend and I shared the NY Strip Steak & Braised Pork Coppa. The steak was exquisite, cooked to perfection and seasoned wonderfully. The Braised Pork Coppa was a a slight let down. It was okay but didn't exceed any expectations we had for it unfortunately. Wish we'd tried the Duck! I've been visiting here for years and I'm shocked I haven't reviewed them yet. If I could give them a 5 star review every year for most of the past decade, I would. It's a great location in the middle of Virginia's wine country, which is usually when I'm in the area. Lunch or dinner it doesn't matter, I've consistently had great meals here. Once COVID started I moved to pick up orders. My go-to was their Oomami burger, which I've affectionately called a 'crack' burger because it's so delicious. I once placed an order on the phone calling it that, and someone who overheard me gave me funny looks before she insisted I tell her where she could get one herself. They very recently put up outdoor cabanas, which look nice although I haven't tried them myself. But maybe my favorite thing is they do a weekly blind wine tasting. You pick up the bottles (they don't ship) and usually their owner does a Facebook Live event where he and a group of largely local wine aficionados are walked thru his deductive process. I'm not very good, but I'm consistently impressed by how Neal consistently nails it. Speaking of Neal, he and his team are super friendly! I really love this place. One of my favorite places! Their cocktails are always perfectly balanced and dangerously good. As a vegetarian, I'm always pleased with their options. They've been able to modify some of the appetizers as well, and I always appreciate that. On our recent visit, we had some grilled asparagus with mole verde, fried Brussel sprouts as our appetizers. For mains, I had cauliflower with sunchoke hummus and it was sooooo good. Perfectly roasted and filling. My husband had Vadouvan curried chicken confit and he raved about it. I have been wanting to go to Field & Main for a while now, but just never felt like making the trip out to Marshall to try it. Finally got to go for my birthday dinner. It's located in a small town and the restaurant itself is very charming. The dining areas are divided into small rooms so it feels very homey. The decor is simple, but gives off an intimate vibe. We were seated in the kitchen area and it was nice to see the dishes being prepared. They do have private cabanas located outside, but they were all booked up when we went. We started off with some appetizers to share. Was not impressed with the bread and butter, but the brussels sprouts dish was so yummy. For our entrees, we got the scallops and the duck. The presentation of the dishes were fancy and all ingredients were fresh. We opted not to get dessert, but I did have the hot chocolate which was so good! read more

Very elegant and low key, I plan to go back soon in December and I'm hoping that the food and service remain consistent

The positives: A wonderful location with terrific ambience. Service was excellent and attentive. The appetizers (carrot and ginger soup and squash "ribs") were outstanding as was the side dish of bread pudding with the meal (a wonderful, more savory version of the typical dessert fare). Cocktails were well made and reasonably priced. The food presentations throughout the evening were excellent. The negatives: While the service, charm, drinks and appetizers began what we thought was going to be an amazing meal, the entrees were lackluster to bad. The trout dish had so much salt in it, on both the fish and the bouillabaisse, it was borderline inedible. It wasn't just a "little salty," it was as if it had been preserved in salt and not washed before cooking. The braised brisket looked attractive, but simply lacked any flavors or complexity. It was the proverbial "fine." The restaurant handled everything professionally, and the service was excellent throughout, but we won't be going back. read more

This restaurant was the best meal on my recent trip to Virginia. The service was great and the menu farm to table with an eclectic lean. To start I had the parsnip soup with coconut milk which was a little thin but really fresh vibrant flavors. For mains I split the Shrimp Po Boy and shrimp and grits with my fella. I really liked the shrimp and grits and would definitely recommend ordering that; my boyfriend also really liked it. The Po Boy on the other hand was a split decision. My boyfriend really liked it. I didn't really care for the sandwich or the side of quinoa salad it was served with. Even with that dish being a miss for me, I still recommend eating here and would be back again if in the area. read more

This post is strictly for takeout. After reading reviews of how good their Wagyu burgers were I had to try it. I NEVER order a burger when eating out because 10/10 times I will prefer my own burger that I make at home on the grill. This one was good. Would I drive 30 min to pick it up and eat it? No. Would I recommend it if you also have heard about it and want to test it out? Sure- go for it. You won't know until till you try it yourself. The cornbread pudding- everyone in the family agreed- No Bueno. It has like a weird aftertaste to it. Is there sour cream in it? Not sure what it is but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Would definitely not recommend this. Try something else. Best of luck. I'm sure the other finer dishes in the menu for the sit down meals are better....(?)
