    Cauliflower shawarma
    Matt L.

Oh my. This is the best meal I've had in the DMV! You'd never guess it in tiny downtown Marshall, but this place will treat you well. We were seated in one of the cabanas. Can I always do this?? The two of us had our own little air conditioned quiet chamber just for us! Our waiter a star: accommodating, informative, funny. I had a glass of their house tannat while my girlfriend went for a mango cocktail which she really enjoyed. To start, we had gazpacho (really a serving for one), the tomato peach burrata (creamy to the point of heavenly), and a mixed green salad (as it sounds). She took cauliflower shawarma as her main in a close call over the apparently awesome trout, but she really enjoyed it. I had the grilled pork chop and was completely knocked out by it. Cooked sous vide to start and then finished in pan, it was loaded with flavor especially with the various sauces and chutneys garnishing. We then had a bit of late harvest wine and decaf espresso for dessert. This was a superlative experience in every way and we will gladly keep making this drive!

Field and Main offers upscale dining in Marshall and that is welcomed. You feel like you are in a house and there are different rooms. I ordered the bison and it was cooked as I had requested. The bison was tender and had a flavorful seasoning. The cocktail, which was a version of an old fashion, was decent but I think I would order something else. Service was pleasant and efficient. For the upscale nature you certainly pay for the nice food and atmosphere.

Look, the service and ambiance is an easy five stars. The staff understand a great dining experience needs inviting and pleasant servers. We were in the main hall which was tastefully decorated and softly illuminated. I have no doubt the food is as fresh from farm to table as it gets, but the main course and potatoes side just did not do it for me. Just isn't high on the flavor index. As for the brownie dessert- decadent and delicious. I would happily return for drinks and dessert.

The good/ the crispy potatoes as an appetizer. Our server was attentive. All of the dishes were over salted. I couldn't finish my hamburger because of the salt. And I appreciate a well salted dish. But not overly salted. Limited menu, nothing for me other than a hamburger from the appetizer menu (I made it a double). Our server warned the chicken confit was salty so I avoided that. Could only image how salty that was compared to everything else... Pretty expensive dinner for $175- we regretted not going to Ashby. I don't mind paying for a good dining experience- which this was not.

My husband and I dined her for our wedding anniversary. It's a wonderful spot for special occasions without completely breaking the bank. We sat in the main dining area, right by the open kitchen. Our server was cheerful and helpful. I wish I remembered his name! I think it was Andrew (definitely started with an A) but I could be wrong. The food wasnt particularly creative but it was all well executed. The bread was honestly my favorite part of the meal. It has a wonderful, smokey flavor to it. After the bread, soup, and my pasta, I was stuffed to the gills. Outside of the bathrooms, there is poster paper with questions and markers to write your own responses. It added a fun, relaxed element to the restaurant (and gives patrons something to do while waiting for the restroom!). I docked one star only because the timing of the courses could've been a bit better. Our server acknowledged the wait and we still enjoyed our time.

Truly a 12/10 experience, even though Yelp is on a 5 star rating system. Beats any restaurant I've gone to in major cities. Book a private cabana where you get a very unique and Internet experience with your party. They even let dogs inside the indoor cabanas! The service is next level and understanding of any dietary restrictions or needs that you may have. Every single bite that I took was absolutely incredible. The star for me was the fish that was cooked to perfection and the Parmesan ice cream. We licked every plate clean. Highly recommend making a detour from dc or on the way to Shenandoah national Park

Celebrating my birthday at this fine restaurant with wonderful outside cabanas and intimate inside dining spaces. Exquisite service and very fresh food met expectations. Smoky grilled trout was the best!

My husband arranged this special dinner as a mini-celebration after our recent wedding, and it exceeded our expectations. We were fortunate to sit at the chef's counter , which gave us a front-row view of the kitchen in action. Watching the chefs at work added a unique and engaging element to our dining experience. The tasting menu offered a well-rounded selection of flavors, and if you appreciate wine then the pairing is highly recommended! Though it's hard to choose, the duck dish was the standout for me--perfectly cooked and delicious. Service was not only fast but also highly attentive. We had a great conversation with our server, who was personable and knowledgeable, adding a warm touch to our special dinner. We left with plans to definitely come back for another time.

What an outstanding restaurant away from the northern Virginia craziness! Located on the Main Street in Marshall, VA you'll get a wonderful menu of locally sourced food. The menu items were delicious. They offer local wine and wonderful craft cocktails. The I'm Perfect was perfect!! The noise level is average the ambiance is quaint with some different options in room seating. They seem to have outdoor dining options for when the weather allows. Service was attentive and very knowledgeable. Just a really great fun experience with delicious food. Parking on the side or on street.

I chose the chef's counter experience at Field & Main to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we were blown away by the meal and wine pairings. Each wine carefully balanced the flavors of the meal and brought out the flavors of both the ingredients in the dish and the wine. Our server was so knowledgeable and just as excited about the food and wine as we were. At the end of our meal when we thanked the chef for the amazing meal, he shared his thoughts on our favorite courses...the continuous evolution of the duck entree until it was just right with the wonderful berry jus, how he transformed the strawberries to add umami flavor to the dish...it made me appreciate the meal even more as not only a form of art but thoughtful care. That thoughtful care was a common thread throughout the whole restaurant from the hospitality of the staff to the ambiance and of course the five-course meal. Loved it!

We came here for my 28th bday dinner! I had heard great things from coworkers who love this local gem! Reservations are a hot commodity and it seems this location is only open Thursday- Sunday for dinner. Menu is printed daily with some selections that stay on the menu and other new creations. The chefs are young and true visionaries!!!! We met one in passing and when I looked at the menu I was pleasantly surprised at some flavor profiles I hadn't seen or tried before (like fresh apples and mussels??? VERY good) The sign out front is beautiful but you need to park in the back and walk in through the back. Seems some road work was being conducted the night we went. The hostess was pleasant but I have to say our server was not the most welcoming. Some offhanded comments didn't sit well with me, but the food made up for it. While we waited for our food a kind server came in with an appetizer of a cold gazpacho to try! They have some elevated details like little towel "pellets" to drop in hot water to create a hot hand towel. Also- since it was my birthday we got to sample a rose wine :) Our meal was to die for. We ordered a LOT! I had to try it all!!! We ordered the white wine and apple steamed mussels (I literally wanted to drink the sauce), we ordered a mini burger (really wasn't mini and looked pretty boring but my boyfriend described it as the best burger he's ever had- wagyu beef with perfect fatty ratio and a bacon jam that knocked his socks off) honestly both of these appetizers prob would be filling enough....if you weren't a foodie like me We also ordered the corn bread pudding for the table. I've never tried anything like it, very moist and full of tender sweet corn. For our entrees, I ordered a cashew crusted black bass with Jerusalem artichokes (they call them sunchokes) I've never had a sun choke but it was pretty good, kind of like a potato artichoke heart hybrid in texture. The fish was flaky and cooked to perfection. The crusting was perfectly executed. The sauce was amazing. My boyfriend ordered the bison steak with farrow and collard greens. Everything about that entree was BEYOND incredible. He also ordered a side crab cake that was full of lump meat and seasoned very well. This experience was one I will never forget. I have referred friends here for thier special events. I noticed it was doggie friendly :) the outdoor cabanas were a cool concept for privacy. I liked the barn doors. It was great they were heated for a chilly evening meal. However, the table and the chairs did not meet the elevated standard, seemed like regular outdoor furniture when everything else was top notch. Slight miss in the furniture. Worth the experience or a cozy date night but beware the $$$! Certainly worth a try and my hats off for the chef!!!!

Now, many years later, we were excited to find that a Foster's Grille was on-route for us as we traveled between central Virginia and north-central West Virginia. Food (rating: 4/5). Patrons customize their orders by filling out a "ticket" at the counter; meals are delivered to your table. My husband ordered a 1/4 lb. Charburger combo, which included fries and a self-serve 12-oz (refillable) fountain drink. His free customization included lettuce, tomato, pickle, and grilled onions. Other free options included mayo, ketchup, onion, relish, jalapeños, hot sauce, and bbq sauce. Additional options, including cheeses, bacon, chili, and mushrooms, were available for a modest up-charge ($0.95 to $1.25 each). I ordered a Foster's salad with grilled chicken, with honey mustard dressing. (There was a choice of 6 dressings). We split our entrees, and everything was very good and as remembered. As for the burger, it was tasty but the 1/4-lb burger was overwhelmed by the size of the bun. Next time, we would order the 1/2-pounder to avoid that problem. The salad was also tasty, featuring a nice mix of salad greens, 4 wedges of fresh tomatoes, croutons, sunflower seeds, cheddar cheese, and the grilled chicken. We were impressed with the mixture of greens, and the fact that the packet of salad dressing was nonfat. As the chicken was sliced quite thinly, it was somewhat dry. Each entree was a good value, at $9-sometime each before taxes and tip. Ambiance. (3/5). We sat at a booth table that was comfortable and clean. Our main issue was that the rock music was much too loud. Service (4/5). We only interacted with staff at the counter (taking our order) and the server who brought our food. In both cases, staff were efficient and got the job done but neither was particularly friendly (nor unfriendly). Location. (5/5). This stop is very convenient for anyone connecting to I-66 westbound after having traveled north along 17. Parking was sufficient and free.

I asked the person at the counter if they cooked burgers to temperature, and he said they did, so I wrote it down. I indicated that I wanted my burger medium-rare and saw the employee take a marker to highlight it and write in big, bold, blue letters "Medium Rare" so it was clear. It took more than twenty minutes for my order to come out, and it was well done. They offered to recook it, but I didn't have another twenty minutes to wait, so I asked for a refund. They did not know how to issue the refund, however, and had to call someone to walk them through it because there was clearly no one in management available. They told me they think they did it, but the point-of-sale system wouldn't print a receipt showing proof that it was refunded. After spending more time on the phone, they figured out how to print a receipt that didn't state it was refunded, but merely indicated that the transaction was "voided". All in all, it took forty minutes when they weren't busy for me to walk out without anything other than being hungry (hopefully I get the refund).

Tables are reserved for 2.5 hours, so I assume the party before us didn't use their full time. We ordered an appetizer and a bottle of wine. The brie cake was delicious--even for someone who doesn't usually like goat cheese (it was layered in)--but unfortunately, no one in our group enjoyed the cheesecake. The winery is both dog- and kid-friendly. All the parents we encountered kept their children supervised, which is a winery rule and one I really appreciate now that we have kids ourselves. Most of the dogs were also very well behaved, though one was repeatedly growling at passing dogs, which was off-putting. While the winery can't control every patron, we choose to leave our dog at home when she's not in a social mood, and it would be nice if all dog owners did the same.

We chose Barrel Oak Winery to celebrate my 50th birthday because of the positive experiences we'd had there before. We traveled across the country to gather family and friends, trusting the venue to host a fun and relaxed evening. Unfortunately, on a 105-degree July day with intense humidity, the Overlook event space had no functioning air conditioning. While no one can control the weather, the conditions inside the venue--and the response to them--were the responsibility of the venue. The staff on site were gracious and did what they could, and we made the best of the evening under the circumstances. But after nearly three hours in extreme heat--and after nearly half our guests had already left--we were ready to call the evening a loss, when we were moved into the Tasting Room. By then, the celebration we had planned had already been materially compromised. What was most disappointing, however, was the lack of proactive management of the situation or thoughtful response afterward. Rather than acknowledging the significance of what occurred, I was left with the impression that it was viewed as an inconvenience rather than the significant disruption it was. If you're considering Barrel Oak for a wedding, milestone celebration, or any event you wish to enjoy, I hope you'll ask the questions we thought were too basic to ask. And if something isn't right, don't be afraid to insist on a solution in real time. We trusted the venue to do that for us, and by the time it happened, it was too late.

But the food was pretty darn good! Here are the positives - The food we tasted was pretty darn good! Their biscuit basket was nice, but the apple butter and the herbed butter in it were both amazing! Those biscuits were so darn good we saved one for dessert to enjoy with their apple butter. Their Grand Dad's Pastrami Sandwich was incredible! The pretzel bun was so soft and flavorful... then mixed with the mustard and their excellent corned beef and those perfectly caramelized onions and cheese - it made one heck of a great sandwich! The chips that came with the sandwich were on the dry/basic side, so they weren't worth the calories. The cole slaw was just 'ok' too. But the sandwich made up for those. Their tomato soup was made very nicely... definitely worth trying!
