Arrived to an unlocked, empty restaurant. I walked inside, thinking there would be a host, and not a single person was there. I had seen some staff outside the front so assumed it was still open as it's a holiday weekend. I walked around back and there was one person, sitting with her feet up in a chair who didn't even greet me. It was an odd experience. I left. The eggs benedict was perfectly cooked with an amazing breakfast ham. The quinoa bowl is also worth a try. Braised greens and pork with a poached egg and a lemongrass forward curry like sauce. Walked into the unlocked "restaurant" and no one was to be found. I saw the pics and menu on yelp so we were excited to make this stop on our way home. Waited for a couple of minutes, creeped around, and found no one. Decided to walk next door to the store and ask. They said they aren't currently operating as a restaurant, just seating so we could order food from the store and go sit inside the restaurant to eat. The store only had one breakfast option so we decided to leave. Definitely a waste of 20 minutes. They should really put a sign on the door or something. read more

I was looking for the perfect place to host my best friends wedding rehearsal dinner, and I stumbled across this gem. Tucked away next to their joining store, you would almost not notice this restaurant, but behind a small alleyway, you'll find a beautiful cabin building now turned restaurant. The best thing about this place was we could reserve the entire place for ourselves. With a cozy Interior with fireplace as well as an entire outside patio with fire pit, this place was perfect. Shauna the event coordinator and Erin our server for the night, were both amazing to work with. The service, food, and beverages were all above and beyond our expectations. We happened to be visiting the Blandy Farm after a nice Winchester weekend, and I scanned yelp to find a nice restaurant nearby for lunch! (Thanks, Yelp!) Atmosphere (4/5): this is such cute renovated barn, with paintings from one of our favorite artists, Rebecca Grace Jones. They lose one star for shared seating (a bit odd) and for a cold winter day, it was a bit drafty. Service (5/5): amazing, attentive service! Food (5/5): Although the brunch menu was very small (think 5 dishes), the quality of this amazing farm to table restaurant was some of the most delicious food I've had in Virginia! I have no idea where this chef came from, but the food was just amazing! Another yelp reviewer said that this was a "lick your plate clean" kinda joint, and I even have the empty plate picks to prove it! Eggs Benedict- made with homemade English muffins and chopped salty Virginia ham! Butternut squash and Rutabaga bisque - this soup was on special and one of the most amazing soups I've ever had! Honestly was disappointed by my experience here and maybe that is because I came in with higher expectations. The service was so slow but the waiter did apologize for that issue. The place itself was super cute inside and felt like eating in a cozy almost luxury log cabin ambiance. The food was truly hit or miss. I understand this restaurant changes it's menu every month so maybe I would consider coming back and trying a different menu later on, but it is so far away. I loved the spinach gnudi and it tasted like fluffy ricotta balls! The tuna tartar was honestly grey and old tuna! Not good. I tried the duck confit ravioli and was not a fan. While you could tell that the raviolis themselves were delicious and handmade - the duck was sooo gamey. Gross! The cod also was way too fishy, what is going on? Not fresh. What a lovely addition to Millwood. Went for a birthday dinner and splurge on the $70 prix fixe meal. We were given 3 choices for each course and they all sounded delicious. As a group we ordered almost all of them. Standouts were delicata squash appetizer, salad, halibut entree, sweet potato yakitori and chicken special. Cocktails hit the spot after an arduous hike at Sky Meadow. Ambiance is nice. Only change I would suggest is to get rid of overly bright overhead lighting. read more

The Buttery does not require reservations. However, they would prefer them. This means, walking are welcomed. Me and my family decided to visit for Brunch before going water tubing one week. We arrived 15 minutes before the restaurant opened, asked for a menu and sat in the front entry way until 10. We were not dressed in Sunday best, but we were not dressed trashy. After allowing us to sit in their entry way for 15 minutes, they ask us how many is in our party, which was 4.5 (toddler) and then tell us they won't be able to accommodate us. When asked why, they said they had parties coming in at 10 and were short staffed. Not once did they ask our name to see if we had reservations and on top of that after going back and forth with them on trying to get some breakfast, we were there 15 minutes after 10 and there were only 3 tables seated. All the other tables were empty. When we decided to go eat elsewhere, we shared our encounter experience with a resident of the area (white male). He told us point blank that it was because of how we were dressed and because of the color of our skin. If reservations are required, they need to change their website. If a dress code is required, they need to make that known. read more

We stumbled upon Millwood during a Sunday drive through Hunt Country and immediately pulled off the road to explore this beautiful historic village. The Buttery is a very special restaurant. From the uniquely curated menu options to the lovely green and white dishes, every detail is just so beautifully intentional. I thoroughly enjoyed the Goat Cheese & Caramelized Onion Tart and the Florentine Eggs Benedict. When I finished my meal, I had to to resist the urge to lick the plate! The Buttery Bloody was also fantastic. I was fortunate enough to try a bite of Crème Brûlée and it was out of this world. Do yourself a favor and get to The Buttery for brunch or any other meal soon. After making reservations for a table for two, my fiancé and I were placed in a corner at simple metal mesh table designed for cheap outdoor dining. The table was also in a strange corner that placed all three of us (myself, my fiancé, and the table) at a 20+ degree angle...definitely not ideal for enjoying a meal. I ordered a bourbon "neat" yet received a large ice cube in my glass. When I respectfully pointed this out to the male server, I was met with derision. After waiting 10+ minutes for my drink to be corrected, a cold and watered-down bourbon was placed on our table without so much as eye contact from the same server. (I suspect he just took the ice cube out...or that Buttery makes it a habit to serve their bourbon cold and watered-down). The food was decent overall, save the rice pudding which came out al dente (definitely not ideal for rice.) The experience, especially the service, left much to be desired, but I can chalk it up to a server having a bad day and a poor table placement. Plus, we left with a sub-$150 tab, which is relatively low given the supposed reputation of this establishment. I usually give a place so highly rated a second chance, but the food just wasn't worth the lackluster service and the utter lack of attention to detail, so I will likely not be returning. read more

Overall, we had a very nice experience at The Buttery. They were very accommodating of the baby we had in our party, but we were seated at a table right near the door and it was a little loud and cold when the door kept opening and closing. The pork belly was easily the best thing we had. Super flavorful and it basically melted in your mouth. The carpaccio was also very flavorful and perfectly thin. Though there was so much on the plate, I think it detracted from the beef. I didn't get to try the bass, but the braised beef was tasty. I had just had a comparable dish at another restaurant a week prior (braised beef on a root mash) and this one wasn't quite as good. I found a handful of undercooked/in-mashed veg in my root mash and the beef wasn't quite as tender as I'd want it to be. The apple pie crème brûlée was good but it was a lot going on. Honestly, I think it would've been better plain. The chocolate cake was good - very moist and well-balanced. Overall, I was mostly pleased but it wasn't perfect for the price point. read more

My wife and I brought my parents here for brunch during their holiday visit and it was a well balanced meal, meaning that there were choices for people that prefer a heartier breakfast and choices for people that prefer a meal on the lighter side. Note that there were only two parties behind us and they had not opened yet and they never asked my last name for a possible reservation, just a "we cannot accommodate your party of 4+a baby"! Luckily we found a spot not too far away that served us "greatly" and a patron there mentioned that it's the clothes you're wearing (which were shorts at-shirt) and the color of your skin! Pros: The food was amazing! Definitely get the biscuits! Outdoor seating was in a nice little courtyard. Mimosas and bloody's were delish. Cons: The service was sub-par. They were not busy at all. We were only one of two tables seated outside and our server never came back to refill waters or drinks. We had ordered some food to "start" and when we inquired about it we got a snarky response stating "they only had two hands". It came out with the main entrees and they were wholly unapologetic. Wanting to lick the plate seems to be a common theme at The Buttery, with a contemporary continental menu. What great luck for us. We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our wedding anniversary here after a delightful stroll through the Blandy National Arboretum just up the road. A charming, authentic restored colonial cottage, built in 1836, adjacent to and part of the Locke "modern country" Store, the cozy bistro can accommodate about 30 guests; seated casually around beautiful hard wood, hand made tables (I wanted to take one of them home). We had just escaped a torrential summer downpour and were welcomed by co-owner, Juliet Mackay-Smith, and her team; while chef and co-owner, Brian Volmrich, was busy in the kitchen preparing for the evening, and the following evening's gastro experience; pairing heirloom tomato recipes with wines from the great Glenn Manor vineyards. Shawna, Brian's wife, guided us to our tables and fawned on us throughout the night. She invited us, if needed, to make ourselves at home at the sous table with any condiments we were missing - a different, more casual approach to service. Juliet later mentioned that when the restaurant was full, diners might share a table with others. Fortunately for us, we were there during a week night with a generally light load of clients and were tended to by the staff throughout the evening. Kelly, the charming and unpretentious sommelier, guided us through the wine list. She was generous and opened a bottle of vintage Brut from Argyle Winery even though we only requested a glass. The choice was exquisite, as were her other choices. For instance, I'm heading straight to The Wine Kitchen, after I finish this note, for a bottle (or two) of Cantine Colosi Nero D'Avola terre Siciliane '17. Butter is how I'd describe this deep and mellow red. The Locke Store specializes in select wines, but it was closed when we were there. I never appreciated fried green tomatoes until we savored the crumbly ones at the Buttery with a caper remoulade that melted in my mouth as we devoured them. My wife and I shared between the two of us, the tomatoes and a sea board. The dill sauce over farm fresh eggs, together with the smoked trout was exciting; and I never would have guessed that salted cod was the primary seafood for the gentle brandade. We ate, like a pizza, a flatbreat with pulled pork and barbecue sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, pickled red onions and arugulla; and also shared a light gnochi with braised beef and fennel ragout. My wife's favorite desert is creme brulle and The Buttery delivered on this one as well, matched with a muscat - Cantine Intorcia Zibibbo NV. The staff had drawn in melted chocolate, salutations for our anniversary, which added the topping to the cake. Our drive to the Buttery from Leesburg, VA, alone made the trip worthwhile. The countryside is glorious, with overhanging great trees, and the visit to the Arboretum adds to the serenity of the area. The Buttery / Locke Store are hosting various culinary and wine tasting experiences...so we will definitely be back. read more

My girlfriends and I went to the Buttery for dinner last night. We enjoyed a wonderful three course meal on the patio. Between the three of us we got everything on pre-fixe menu. The food was fantastic. Photos include the pork tenderloin and the salmon nicoice salad. Erin was our server and she was so wonderful and attentive. She was very accommodating of my gluten allergy. I felt at ease. After the meal she offered to take a photo of our party which was so kind. The patio is airy and spacious. I felt very safe in these Covid times. All of the Buttery waitstaff were in masks, the restrooms were tidy and cleaned every 60 minutes, the patio wasn't too Jam packed. Just one visit and gave three stars because of the annoying door that slammed all evening long. The ambiance was lovely, the service was fine and the food was above average. But A better way must be found to you get the food from the kitchen, especially in these winter months. We started with the olives. Perfectly marinated in a citrus vinaigrette topped with small shallots, Tyme / rosemary and a lemon slice. Each olive better than the last. The hulumi was next. Having just returned from Israel my expectations were low... boy I was wrong. It was accompanied by cherry sauce, a side salad and dressing that blew my mind. After that we ordered the butternut squash soup and buttermilk ricotta. OH MY GOD. Lastly I had gnocchi which was incomprehensible. Never in my whole life have I had better gnocchi... and I loveeee me some gnocchi. I told the server the chef needs to sell gnocchi by the pound so I can bring it back to New Orleans.
