What a treat! Cool atmosphere, warm and inviting, cozy booths and great service! It was casual and the prices very reasonable. We shared the warm spinach dip appetizer. It was very tasty and the warm tortilla chips reminded me of the homemade vs I got used to in AZ. The Caesar salads were very fresh and had a nice strong Caesar dressing which I love. The server stayed on top of drinks and clearing dishes without intruding. We had the jack Daniels filet and JD salmon- both were cooked perfectly. Our sides were very nice as well. We took a molton lava cake back to the B&B so the server, instead of heating, told us the exact amount of time to heat the cake and she was right! I have been here multiple times and the food is always really good and they have yet to mess up my order ever but the reason I am giving them 4 stars is because the service can be quit slow at times even when not busy but besides that it is a great place and I enjoy it there! read more

We had a very short wait for our order to arrive, however there were few pepole in the restaurant. Visiting Orange and went there last night. Waitress was excellent and was very quick. I ordered the homemade meatloaf and got a side of wings. Both were great as well. My friend ordered crab cake and grilled shrimp and had no complaints. Awesome atmosphere and very spacious. Would definitely return. read more

This restaurant has been one that I have wanted to visit for quite a while. Even though the sign said to dear yourself the waitress came to get my drink order very fast. I'm used to waiting a while to be noticed when I have to seat myself. My soup came very fast also despite the fact that it was a baked French onion soup. From there in things started to go down hill. My main course was delivered way before I could finish my soup and then my bill was shoved in front of me while I was half way through my main course. I don't know if they have desserts because there was no intention of asking me if I wanted anything else. Once I placed my money in plain view, those folks who were so attentive walked past me several times knowing that if I got up and didn't get change the tip would have been 30%. I watched them ignore me for quite sometime before I made eye contact. Finally the waitress told me she would get my change. I still left 15%, but I would certainly have left more if they had not used the tactic they did. read more

My husband ordered meatloaf and it was inedible. He tried to smother it in some of the gravy from the mashed potatoes, but once he ran out of water he could not gag anymore down. My prime rib (the special) was incredibly tough and my sons baby back ribs was too spicy to eat. The cost is not worth the quality, go to the Generals Quarters instead. Service sucked! read more

As an out-of-towner, I was recommended this restaurant by several locals and decided to give it a try. Originally I was a little unsure as the sign says Steaks and Seafood, and to me that meant expensive. However, I looked up their menu online (I love that they have a website as it's been difficult to find info on restaurants around this area) and discovered they had an extensive collection of items, including sandwiches that were very reasonably priced. This restaurant is HUGE! I'm not sure if they ever fill up, but all the silk mill artifacts on the wall, and the original wood floor from the mill made the place have a really cool, historic vibe. We ate in the bar in the back, as that was the only place with people as we went near close on a Tuesday night. I have to be honest here, seeing the bar-type appetizers excited me, but I didn't expect much. We started with the Spinach dip which really blew me away. It was amazing...honestly the best I've ever had. We both got the pulled pork sandwiches which were incredible. They slow cook their pork and make their own barbecue sauce from scratch! You can definitely taste the care that goes into their food. I feel like I really stumbled upon a gem tonight. Maybe the locals already know this, but being from out-of-town, I thought I would try to help other travelers like myself :) Definitely a place to go! Our favorite restaurant. We live in a rural area, drive 30 miles to eat at the SIlk Mill Grille and have yet to be disappointed after several visits. Delicious, nicely presented dishes, perfectly grilled steaks, yummy homemade desserts and friendly attentive service. That is my idea of a great restaurant. read more

How interesting.....Middle of nowhere USA. Driven through here 5 million times. I grew up just o/s gordonsville closer to Zions xroads. Not missing a thing if you've never been there. Tonight we took my parents out to eat. I saw the reviews here..figured they must all be locals..I did not feel like a trip to Charlottesville either. Alright. Lets try this place. Walked into a huge front room. Sign said seat yourself. We did. Right away our apps and drinks were ordered. We got the beef nachos (of course) and potato skins. Nachos were good. I did not eat the potato skins but everyone seemed to like them. Ordered entrées. Kids wanted fish and chips....was told that is only a lunch item (it was 4:00) but..she said, it should be no problem to get that for them. Reassured, I confirmed fish and chips for the kids. I got sirloin (medium) baked potato and steamed veggies. My dad got some kind of (what turned out to be....) a huge cheeseburger/fries. Mom got the special. Fried oysters wild rice and baked potato. We sat there....and sat....and sat....two tables of 4 got served before us...figured they must be the locals ....anyway..me and the kids walked around and had plenty of time to look at the great photos on the walls showing the workers and families of the mill back in the day. Nice stuff. Some of the machinery was decorating the walls.....(bored yet?.......we were...) finally the food came out. All plates. Fabulous. Really good. No. I did not complain that my medium steak was medium well...because overall the place was clean...food was great and I was impressed. Oh! Thats right...We are in Orange Va!!! Who knew! read more

Reasonably priced sit down restaurant, the only real option on a Sunday in Orange since Lightship was closed and I was not going to Hardee's. The service was very good and food was a good value for the money and about what I expected. Lots of room - you don't feel like you are cramped at all. read more

My nephew graduated high school and we all went to eat at this place. Very cool place, rustic, great service and great food. So much so the next day for lunch we went back and had another good meal. The warehouse used to be an old silk mill and they have the history on the menu. Pretty neat that they were able to preserve the building. The breaded mushroom appetizer was just great. I had a brunch item for lunch which included eggs, ham and French toast. Very good. The lemonade is very good as was my half and half. The meatloaf was excellent and all the salads were freshly prepared. You won't go wrong with this place and if I'm back in the area, this is where we'll eat. read more

The decor of the restaurant is beautiful as it highlights the building's history as a parachute manufacturer during WW2. The service was excellent. First time eating here. Had lunch sitting at the bar. Waitress was friendly - food came promptly. Club sandwich was good, on sourdough bread - but it didn't seem like the sourdough bread I get at home. All in all, a good experience. We had only been to Silk Mill Grille once before a year or more ago and had the opportunity to visit again this weekend. Just like the first time - no complaints from us! The crab dip served in a bread bowl is a must! In fact I think I could just eat that and a salad and be done! So good! I had crab cakes and shrimp and hubby had the fried seafood dinner with rockfish, shrimp and crab cake. Just no complaints! Our waitress was nice and service was very timely. This was one of the worse dining experiences I've had. The hostess was a really nasty lady. Had a large party with us, 22 total...which included 2 kids. You would have thought we insulted her just by stepping in the place. 22 paying customers, and she made it feel as if she was doing US a favor by serving us in the restaurant. She spoke about our entire party as of we weren't standing next to her, while she complained about us to another customer . I would not recommend anyone go to a place like this. She made reference to this is how we do things "in Orange", as if we had stepped back in time to the civil rights movement . Nobody needs to put up with ignorance like this. When they first opened, around 2000, a few visiting friends and I decided to check it out since we'd visited the silk mill when it was operating as a silk mill. The wood floors and old pieces of silk mill equipment mounted on the walls were cool. And the ceilings were 20' high and the space was huge. The prices were good, so we thought, and I decided to have a burger since good burgers usually come from bars, which this place also had. The burger was good but, YIKES! When I saw the bill for my burger, it went up considerably from what I thought. Fifty cents extra for lettuce & tomato, 50 cents more for the onions, 50 cents more for the jalapenos. Huh? No indication on the menu that this all these normally included items would be extra charges. And several years ago that was a lot larger sum than now. I avoided the place for several years. Then I tried again, since there were limited restaurants in town. I like to take a break from cooking for myself so for a few times my husband and I visited and had dinner. Prices were reasonable -- I never ordered another burger - service s-l-o-w but it was a change of scenery and food not bad. I even met a friend there for dinner once in awhile. Then one evening I met my friend for dinner. When we arrived was there no one around; we were in the large entry room looking in on a huge dining room next to a virtually empty bar. There was 1 table that was occupied in this cavernous area that held probably another 10 or more empty tables. A middle-aged woman with a sour expression, er, greeted us saying that our wait would be 15 minutes. Huh? I glanced over her shoulder at the huge empty room and said, "Oh. Are you expecting a large party?" She caught my eye with a cold stare and said to us in a stern voice as though I was a small misbehaving child, "Honey, I said it would be 15 minutes." She turned and strode away. My friend and I looked at each other in disbelief. We left. I later learned that this was probably the owner of the restaurant and was regaled with more tales of other encounters there, even more unbelievable. No, I will not be going back. Life is hard enough without rude people ruining a meal before it's even served. Life is too short. read more

Stopped at the SMG on my way back from a trip to Appomattox Court House. The town of Orange is quaint, with a main drag that does host more chain-based restaurants. The SMG is on the outskirts of town, near some B&Bs overlooking the community. Very interesting history and great use of this history in the decor of the restaurant. Typical for small town Virginia, you couldn't find more polite, friendly and attentive servers. I was dining alone and only got to experience one entree. Entrees include a salad (or soup) and a side. Food was fantastic and prepared quickly. I had sirloin tips in a wine sauce. The waitress, upon learning I still had a 90-minute or so drive back to Arlington in the dark, asked if I wanted an iced tea to go for my ride. I thought my meal was high quality with small town pricing, found the staff so kind and am only giving 4 instead of 5 stars because I didn't experience enough of the menu. Rest assured, I will make the SMG a regular stop when "Sunday driving" in the area as it made for a perfect ending to a fall day of sight seeing. Just be certain to watch for the signage, as it is half a block of the main thruway. read more

Such a disappointment! After visiting a potential wedding venue in Orange my fiancé and I decided to we stop in for lunch. We were met with a hostess who appeared less than thrilled to have a job, who shook her head and informed me it would be a 30 minute wait. I told her that was fine but before she could finish writing down my name an older woman barged in and loudly proclaimed they had several large parties, had large parties waiting and it would be at least 30-40 minutes maybe even more. She was so rude and pushy I immediately told her not to worry as it appeared my fiancé and I were not welcome there. I couldn't help but feel like race played a role in her demeanor and neither could my fiancé. Unfortunately, we will not be booking with the venue we were looking at either, as we don't want our diverse family to feel the same way we did, should they wish to dine out while we are in town for the weekend. The food is OK, nothing to write home about unless below average service coupled with some very bland, uninspired dishes are your thing. My server, Carter, smelled like a French hooker and weed. Wasn't very attentive. A woman, whom turned out to be the owner, was skulking about like an angry troll. And to top it all off, I saw not one, but two roaches near the kitchen door as I was sitting right across from it. Disgusting.
