The Pu Pu platter, the sesame beef and the combination sweet and sour were delicious! The beef was crispy and not dried out with a wonderful sauce. The homemade duck sauce and crispy noodles were also delicious! Nothing was over fried or overdone! The tea was served in a vintage style metal teapot, which reminded us of our childhood. Three buddies and I went on a weekend camping trip to get away from the hustle and bustle of Washington, DC. Surprisingly, on a Saturday night in Orange, VA not much was open so we wandered over to Happy Gardens. Given the fact that this is a random Chinese restaurant in the middle of nowhere Virginia, we did not have great expectations. The atmosphere was classic cheesy, but the man (Jimmy) who owns it is so nice (hence the two stars v. one star). Between the four of us, we ordered four dishes and it was more than enough for four grown men. It was not the best Chinese food, but still edible. read more

There is not a lot in orange but this is my go to Chinese. The food is always so fresh and they are friendly. They also have great lunch specials. Don't let the old reviews fool you I think they may be under new management. read more

I'm torn on what to give this restaurant. On one hand, I'll never eat here again. So perhaps, 1 star is accurate. On the other hand, I had one meal and other than the general lack of edibility of it, there wasn't much wrong with it. Let's start at the beginning. It was late on a Wednesday, around 8:30pm. I was returning home from spending 3 hours in traffic. In no way was I going to cook at home. I needed sustenance. The fabulous burger joint on Main St, Orange, was rather closed looking and the doors were locked to boot. So, I looked around and noticed the beckoning glow of the Happy Garden restaurant sign luring me suspiciously towards the darkened corner on the other side of the tracks. This is literal, by the way. I had never eaten here before and had only a passing recollection there was a Chinese food establishment here. The front window is ominously blocked from street view. As such, I hadn't given it much thought. But late in the middle of the week back home from hours in traffic released my inhibitions slightly. I ventured towards the front door. I opened it. There was another wooden door immediately following as though fate had given me a second chance to turn back. I proceeded cautiously through the second door. What I found inside was actually quite tame, by unknown Chinese food restaurant standards. The empty lunch buffet told me though, that dinner might not be the proprietor's forte. The very happy man behind the counter smiled broadly at me and said, "Yes! Yes!" every time I mentioned anything. It seemed to me that his English was mostly limited to the menu items and the words "eat in" and "take out." This in no way affects my rating, merely for information purposes. I ordered steamed dumplings and beef lo mein. I generally know what I'll get when I order dumplings, but lo mein seems to differ from Chinese food restaurant to Chinese food restaurant. What I got: soggy and slimy dumlings filled with an unknown pureed product of some kind. Spaghetti noodles dipped in soy sauce mixed with cabbage, some other unknown vegetable and rehydrated beef slices. I have had these two dishes in myriad restaurants with myriad results. This was one of the worst. Hence the declaration I will not eat there again. The young man working the counter and the young woman behind the counter tending her very young children were exceptionally nice. I do not wish them ill or suffering business, yet I would have been just as well off getting that original recipe bucket from the Colonel. read more

I really want to like this restaurant. It's convenient & affordable and we don't have many options in Orange. Unfortunately it's not good. In the future no matter how tired I am, I will pass it on my way to the grocery store & make my own food. In the past I have overlooked the extremely shabby appearance of the dining area & try not to think about what the kitchen appears like in comparison. We've tried several times now. Tonight's Kung Pao CHICKEN was the final vote. I got a container full of water chestnuts. Seriously, it was so hard to find any chicken. I had an entire plate full of water chestnuts. I try to support small businesses on Main Street but I should have just gone to McD's. Lunch buffet was advertised until 2:30. I arrived at 1:30 and it was really picked over with many empty trays, but I was told they were restocking. 40 minutes later no new food. There wasn't enough to even constitute leftovers. What I scraped up was pretty bland. The hot tea was good though. No one was bussing tables and most were trashed from the earlier crowd that ate all of the food. read more

I met my mother here for lunch, and the floor was so filthy I was sure she would want to find someplace cleaner to eat. However, she didn't, so we stayed (although it made me nervous to eat here because if this is what the dining room looked like, just imagine the kitchen). No other reviews comment on the cleanliness, so possibly it was just a bad day. On the plus side: very friendly and efficient waiter (gave one extra star, he was so good). I ordered vegetable lo mein, and it was very tasty, the least greasy lo mein I've ever had. I normally order tofu in Chinese restaurants, but was shocked to find none on this menu. read more

I love the Chinese/Japanese food. They're dumplings and Kung Pao are my favorites. You should try it if you live nearby.
