A+! Based on other reviewers' comments, I decided to give Great Hills Shell a try for repairs on our 5+ year old SUV. We are new to Austin and had no clue as to who to try for service. Bob and his team are amazing. They are polite and engaging. They took the time to explain clearly everything that they found, and to describe all my options, including detailed costs and risks/benefits of each option. At no time did I feel pressure to select a more expensive alternative. The parts warranty is a great feature too. The SUV has been running really well since the work was done. If I didn't know better, I would say it has a bit more "swagger" on the road. These guys are now my go to team for all our cars. read more

This was the third place I brought my car to figure out a noise that it was making. The first two places were trying to charge $1200 for a repair that Great Hills Shell was going to charge me ~ $350 less for. Upon bringing my car in they told me that repair wasn't needed at all and determined the noise came from something that was loose and was able to fix it for free. They also found a leak that the other two places did not mention. Definitely very honest and trustworthy and will be the place I bring my car to whenever I have any issues in the future. read more

I came in for my second vehicle inspection with this location. The mechanic recognized me, and was very friendly and polite. There was a problem they noticed before they even started the inspection (due to prior mechanical work) and they fixed it on the spot in less than half an hour. Last year, my inspection was done within 10 minutes. This location is a bit hard to find. If you're coming north on 183 you need to take the Brake exit and U-turn under 183, then they're immediately on the other side of an aquatic building that almost completely hides the little gas station. The garage is on the back side of the gas station. I drove 45 minutes past downtown Austin to do my inspection here again, and I'll be changing to doing most of my oil changes here too when I have time to make the trip. read more

Once upon a time... I was in dire need of an oil change, tire rotation and break check. I found this place on yelp and they had good reviews as well as a coupon for a free break check/tire rotation if you bought an oil change. Worked out perfectly! The staff were super friendly and knowledgable as well. I was able to get all of the above done over my lunch hour too! Wicked fast/convenient. Definitely recommend them and I will most certainly be coming back. read more

I've come here quite a few times since it's close to my work place and have gotten oil changes, tire rotations, changed out air filters, etc. and it's a perfect spot to get regular maintenance done on your car. Their service is quick (I've almost always waited 30-45 minutes only for all the fixes to be done) and the guys there are friendly. Every time I've gone, the work they've done on my car has been very fairly priced and they explain everything they're doing/ have done to your car thoroughly. The last time I went, I showed them that my other favorite auto body shop was running a special on oil changes/ air filter changes and they even matched the price. That, coupled with the fact that they have a customer loyalty card where you can buy 4 oil changes and get the 5th one free have me hooked and coming back. If you need an oil change/ regular maintenance on your car, look no further. I would highly - 10/10 - recommend this place. read more

I used to bring my car regularly for oil changes at this place until one day I brought it in for Check Engine light came on. They made the diagnosis, quoted $680 to replace catalytic converter, in the process quoting $500 for a catalytic converter on my 20 year old car which sold for $178 at Auto Zone. They also pointed out my radiator fan not working which they up charged the price & ended up paying $180 to replace radiator fan and $110 the cost of the diagnostics for the check engine light. The upsell is real in this place for being a neighborhood gas station since they are within 1 mile from my house. Needles to say, even after I pointed out the mark up on pricing or the parts and padded labor ... they told with a straight face that they aren't over charging. I bought the parts for catalytic converter and got it replaced at another honest mechanic shop for $100 in the process costing me $277 instead of the $680 they quoted!! read more

I often fill up my tank there, but last week I actually ran out of gas 1/2 a block away on the way to GHShell to fill up (it was a crazy busy day) and I called the station & asked if they could help. Within a couple minutes one of the mechanics arrived with a some gas! I am so thankful they helped me! After I got enough gas to make it to the GHShell & top off my tank I thanked the staff & they repeated said they wanted to be there for their customers and they didn't mind helping out! This place is such a hidden treasure I almost don't want to share the secret! They're a small Shell station located on the one-way 183 frontage road heading south, and from the road, it looks like a run-of-the-mill gas station. It's easy to miss them as you're driving by. I found Great Hills Shell on Yelp and after reading the rave reviews I visited them for a state inspection on a Saturday afternoon. No appointment, and I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. I've been there several times since and they've always been friendly, polite, fast and effective. Great experience every time. I haven't used them for a major repair yet, but I plan to once I require one. read more

Your first impression when you walk in might not be much, the place is small and the waiting room is, literally, the space not taken up by several large commercial refrigerators, but once you get to know the staff and experience being treated right, time after time, you'll feel very comfy and at home here. Great Hills Shell (used to be Texaco and that let's you know how long we've been coming here) does a wonderful job servicing our cars. They even worked with us when one big AC repair was a manufacturer issue and helped us get reimbursement from the car company. How many car repair shops would do that? Once, an out-of-town family member was driving in for a visit and her truck broke down around Liberty Hill. Panicked, she called us, asking where she should take her truck for repairs. "Great Hills Shell!" we said. When the tow truck driver arrived he said, "I know that place. No problem." This was early afternoon. Bob and his crew had the vehicle diagnosed before closing that evening and had completed major repairs by the next day. She drove home in a safe truck and very impressed with our mechanics. During an oil change the other day, a mechanic noticed a nail in my tire. The very same tire I'd had Costco inspect a couple of weeks before and who's tire crew said they didn't see anything. I opted to let Great Hills Shell fix the flat and it was done in 15 minutes. If a big, fancy waiting room is important to you, you'd better pass on this place. If excellent customer service and quality repairs are your thing, then bring your vehicle to Great Hills Shell. Besides, if you get really desperate for more room to wait in, you can just stroll over to the Starbucks located inside Randall's, right behind the service station. Get your latte fix AND know your car is getting its fix, too! read more

I chose Great Hill Shell initially as it was the most convenient location close to my work. However it has turned out to be very professional and reliable so far. They are very upfront about all information and are very humble and friendly staff. Feels at home care service. They don't try to sell you stuff that you do not need. read more

I want to be honest and not hide the fact that I have known the owner for years. Having said that, I think this place is as good or better than any other in town. If you have exotic cars, you should take them to specialized mechanics. But for the rest of us, Great Hills Shell gets my recommendation -- "pono." read more

I recently bought a new car with its first few years of maintenance covered at the dealership and will honestly miss coming here for an oil change! They have taken such excellent care of my older car- they are honest, efficient, and friendly and it's been such a convenience to drop my car off and slide the key in their slot (or even have it towed there late at night, once!) and know they'll call first thing in the morning to get started. I've done everything from oil changes to more major repairs with them and can't recommend them highly enough- when I was getting my maintenance records together to sell my older car I noticed I bounced from shop to shop to shop until I moved to Austin and found Great Hills Shell- never once had to go anywhere else. read more

I am new to Austin and totaled my car within 2 months of moving here from across the country. Since I don't know anyone in Austin, I'm doing the whole car search on my own. Someone at work know I am in the mark to purchase a new car, and recommended I bring it to Great Shell to have it inspected before I buy. I'm really glad I did. Everyone here is very friendly. I don't know much about cars, but you can tell the mechanics are very good at their job and know what they're doing. I've taken 2 cars here for what is called a "Buyer's Check" to get inspected before i buy. In both instances, the mechanics brought to my attention issues the car had that I would have had no way of knowing otherwise. Nick did a great job explaining to me what each description meant listed on the report sheet they give you after the inspection (I wrote my own notes on the back). Also, Thomas is a great guy. I've taken 2 cars there within 4 days to get inspected, so the only caveat is that the inspections are becoming too pricey to get on every car I think about buying. $57 to raise the car in the air, look around, and get a piece of mind is expensive - However, this is certainly a better alternative than buying a car that has issues. ("pick your poison" frame of mind), At the end of the day, the guys at Great Hills are great and i will continue to do service with them through my entirety in Austin. read more

After reviewing posts on Next-door and Yelp, I sent 6 requests to various auto shops to do about $2-3K in repairs to my 98 Jeep. Bob (owner) was the 1st person to respond and provided me an estimated quote. The other requests either responded, did not respond or left a voice message informing me to take my vehicle into their shop to conduct their "own evaluation" of work needed and none of them provided an "estimate." I spoke with Bob (whom I found to be very honest) and provided detailed information how much each part was going to cost including labor. I took my Jeep in and within 2 days had my 98 Jeep in tip top condition and came way under my estimated costs for repair. Going forward, I will be taking all of my vehicles to Great Hills Shell Auto. read more

As a female, I have come to expect repair shops to try to talk me into an upsell or convince me I need to change filters, gaskets, spark plugs, etc (thanks Jiffy Lube, Midas and Discount Tire). Not this place. I came in for an oil change and inspection. It's not the fanciest place but I'm not prissy. I was told it was an hour wait, which was fine because I brought a book and my iPhone. They told me, "Ma'am, we noticed your drive belt is getting a little worn. It's not going to break tomorrow but just want to let you know what we saw so you're aware that might be something to change in the next few months." They printed an estimate for me and that was that. No pressure, no scaring me with threats of my transmission falling out if I don't drop the $110 bucks on it today, just courtesy. When the time comes, I will definitely bring it here. My boyfriend has used this place for awhile and won't go anywhere else. Honest service is hard to find so we hope this place isn't going anywhere. read more

Ever since we bought our 2010 Mazda6, we have been going to this Shell station for oil change and factory recommended service. Dale (the service manager) is friendly, and honest. He does not upsell any stuffs that you don't need just because. The price is not the lowest in town but they do offer the loyalty card which helps a little. They are usually quick about 30min to an hour. I wish the waiting room could be bigger (has only 3 really old chairs), renovated (new floor, a fresh coat of paint, and new furniture would be nice), and free wifi so I can work while waiting for my car. read more

The problem with internet review sites is that a majority of reviews come from a minority of unsatisifed customers. After seeing the unfair reviews of Great Hill's Shell on yelp, I've felt it necessary to write my first review on yelp. Bob and Great Hill's shell are the last of a dying breed of honest and knowledgeable neighborhood mechanics. I first used Great Hill's Shell in February 2003 after moving to Austin for the first time. I came in for a state inspection and found that Bob's service and attention to detail was extraordinary. After the inspection, there were a few reparis that were necessary to bring my car up to compliance. Bob's crew fixed my dying 1995 camery up for a reasonable price. Ever since then, I've gone to Great Hill's for checkups and oil changes. As opposed to corporate repair chains that are in business to raise their stock price and increase profilt growth (not to fix cars), Bob has never tried to push an unecessary service or repair. Great Hill's shell may not be the cheapest mechanic in Austin, but you get what you pay for with car repairs. read more

My water pump seized up, and it trashed the serpentine belt on my old Buick. Brett not only took care of my problem in short order, he also spotted a separate issue with a mount that would probably have turned into a more serious problem if let go. I highly recommend these guys. read more

I've been coming here for about 4 years for oil changes, vehicle inspections and a variety of mechanical work. First thing, they have consistently given great customer service every time. Secondly, they look small but they do quite a bit of work. Finally, I feel like they are completely honest in there work. They're not one of those places that gets you in with an oil change and then pressures you into $500 worth of additional work. When I've brought my car in, they've always given me a variety of options and have even told me that I didn't need some work done that I've asked for because I didn't need it. The only reason I'm giving even 1 star is because yelp won't let me write the review unless I pick one. I went in this morning to advise the manager that someone has used my credit card information fraudulently there twice in the last 4 months. I have only been to that location once for an inspection back in 11/2017 and I did have a good experience. When I went in I asked for the manager, a gentleman at the counter told me that the manager walked in right behind me. When I first walked in I wanted to verify the store location number and when I asked the gentleman at the counter he didn't know. I started explaining to the manager (Nick) the situation, he seemed very nice and willing to help. Then the guy at the counter chimed in when I started asking if there was any way they could look into the charges for me as a courtesy. He was very rude and uncooperative when I simply was trying to get help in resolving the issue. I then find out he is the owner (Bob) and kept referring me to Shell when I asked him if he could look through his merchant information. He refused to do so and while that may be the route to go, when someone comes in to your establishment and advises you that their information is being fraudulently used at their store not once but twice, the right thing to do is try to assist. He got rude with me and I did as well because I was in utter disbelief that he was not willing to help in any form or fashion. Had he not been there, I truly believe the manager would have assisted me. Needless to say the owner (Bob) is rude, has terrible customer service and seems to be ok with people using other people's credit card info for services at their store. Don't spend your $ here and especially don't use your credit or debit card here. read more
