Dear Arbor Auto works, Thank you for wasting 3 days of my time and literally trying to hustle me as for every penny and fix along the way. We took our Saturn in seeing as it was starting but not staying running. My boyfriend had been trying to fix it but was certain the issue was somewhere unreachable without a lift. We dropped it off around 9 or 10 am Monday, talked to the girl at the front about what we thought the issue was and waited for their call back....and waited and waited. Tuesday afternoon, 4pm rolls around and we finally hear back. The ignition coil modual is out and it's going to cost us $730+ to fix and they still weren't sure it would "solve the problem." 730$ to fix a 95 Saturn, my eyes just about popped out. Thankfully we still have mechanic friends back home who kindly informed us that the modual GM direct price is $ 240 max and the Auto zone price is $160. The labor is easy, 4 bolts with an 8mm" wrench then just take out the old and screw in the new. So how did we get from $200 maybe even $300 with labor to over 730? When we asked the girl at the front her answer was "We don't go to Auto Zone for parts We are an alternative to a dealership." WHAT?! This tiny local hole in the wall auto shop is trying to compare themselves to a dealership in price and parts, but not customer service or time? When my boyfriend smarted off to her saying "This is ridiculous" she smarted right back "No, your attitude is ridiculous." So in short Don't ask for a breakdown of your estimate unless you want attitude from the desk girl. Overall we had the car towed home, to install the part ourselves, were charged $106 in "diagnostics" and threatened with a garage fee if we didn't get it out of there soon enough. Funny seeing it was parked in the lot, not a garage ,and was iterally smashed up against the rock barrier so hard it knocked it the rock off.. So if you're looking to get the run around, hustled, and insulted I'd definitely recommend Arbor Auto. If you are looking for quality care , a modicrum of patience, explanations on cost and labor, honestly I'd go anywhere else. Unequivocally the most honest, reasonably priced, and skilled auto shop I've ever been to. I've been in three times over the years and the results are as follows: (1) quoted and performed the same work for $1.2K less than I was quoted at 2 x auto shops (1 dealer, 1 independent). They worked on my exhaust and suspension and gave me honest, legitimate advice. (2) worked on my brakes - told me I probably had another year on my pads when the competitors told me I urgently needed to replace. (3) replaced belt and general servicing - performed work at a far lower price than the dealers recommended service. (+) in my last visit they also provided detailed pictures and notes on all recommended repairs and sent in a text. I've seen similar things at dealer shops before but not with Arbor's level detail that made me feel confident that they actually fully contemplated the issue(s) fully I really have no reason to endorse these guys other than the unmatched level of service they offer. Terrible. ABSOLUTELY GARBAGE customer service. Will not recommend and will actively dissuade anyone from going here. Lazy-ass work and borderline hostile customer service. Over a year ago, I was up-sold by the manager, Mark(?), on a service I may or may not have needed. This was my go-to place for YEARS and I made a special trip to run my oil change and inspection through them, even after I had moved 15 miles away. The up-sell was an additional $350 to flush the brake and power steering lines. I trusted their assessment, as my go-to place for years, that they wouldn't just be fleecing me for a buck. WRONG. I asked if they would accept a coupon from one of their MANY mailers ($50 off). Mark said sure. I picked up my vehicle after hours, so the bill was just inside the car. No discount or credit was applied. Well, nbd, I thought, what is $50 when you can trust the service? Well, I can't really explain how, but all that time ago, the mechanic FORGOT TO REMOVE the nozzle head for the pressurized hose they use to clear the line. After several shops being under the hood, someone finally noticed this, alerted me to the potential hazards and, thank goodness, I happened to have the brake fluid cap still in my trunk! I took the nozzle head back up personally to talk with them about it. The mechanic was extremely apologetic and grateful, said "I was probably busy and just forgot, but THANK YOU for returning this because it is expensive to replace." I presented the receipt and explained everything and he said, "We are going to take care of you, don't worry!" We just needed to wait for the manager to return. Well, everything changed when he did return. Suddenly, my repairs aren't covered by warranty, and no, I was not harmed, nor was my car, but this person treated me like I was just out to make a buck off of him personally. He ASKED ME FOR A COMPENSATION balance. Excuse me, isn't this YOUR JOB to handle customer issues? I was so taken aback, I said, "I don't know, $50-$100 seems about right to me." Like, idk, the amount of the coupon you said you would honor and then just decided to ignore? His attitude was completely dismissive and bordering on judgmental. He said all refunds/credits are by the OWNER's discretion ONLY. Supposedly he was going to talk to the owner, Winn, but I have not since heard a word from anyone there since I returned their property. I've interacted with the owner several times when I lived nearby and went often, always had a good experience, but this manager is not interested in positive customer experiences OR positive customer feedback, so since they don't have the time of day to call, rectify or even apologize for their mistake, here we are. read more

I have a less than reliable car and am pretty new to Austin. So, when I came sputtering into the Arbor Auto Works shop 5 months ago, I was delighted to see a shiny "They Love Us On Yelp" sticker affixed to their front door. They offer great service in a respectable amount of time. Their prices are comparable and they never put pressure on you to make additional repairs. If they do catch something extra, they'll show you the issue and discuss a recommended timeframe, if any, of when to make the fix. Arbor values repeat business and because of that, they are anxious to know their customers. Most recently, and most notably, I was stranded in Houston with engine trouble. The shop my sister took me to diagnosed the problem and quoted a large block of service time. Because it was an expensive repair, I called Winn at Arbor to discuss my options (Do I make the repair or sell?). He remembered me, my car and noted the current issue. He talked me through the proposed quote and researched whether or not it was valid. His attention helped me better understand the issue and gave me negotiating power. UPDATE: TLDR: Do not go here. I had a positive first experience, but every time I've gone in afterwards they always try to get me to spend more. Also the owner was completely unprofessional towards me today when I asked them about a repair. They are only getting 2 stars because Preston remained professional. I brought in my car for an oil change yesterday. I was called and told that I could some fluids replaced. I said I would wait since it wasn't urgent. I was then called again and told when they rolled down the windows, one wouldn't go back up. Um, why did my window get rolled down? "Because it was hot outside." Well, aren't you working outside of the car? "It was hot when we grabbed the car to pull it in." You mean the you needed the windows rolled down for the one minute while you pulled it into the garage? When I asked them these questions when I showed up to pay for the repair, the owner immediately got snippy and said "We called you and explained to you didn't we? You approved the repair didn't you? Do you want me to show you what we replaced?" When all I asked was that they work with me a bit because this problem didn't exist until it was in their shop. And I really didn't understand why the situation should have occurred in the first place. I also never roll down my back windows so I was skeptical as to why this all of a sudden happened. They refused to work with me. Then Preston said "Well we could have not told you, but we felt that would have been wrong." UM THANKS for being honest? Appreciate it. He also said they could have manually pulled it up, but when he originally told me about the issue he said it couldn't be and replacing the part was the only option. Because i am a groupon-clone addict, I have three living social deals to arbor works for oil changes. Since it expires January, I figured maybe I should use one. So I called em up, was told to come in and headed down burnet to be a responsible car owner. My first impression was that they were fast, friendly, efficient and would take care of my rattletrap 4runner. So I went on over to hat creek burger joint to get a delicious diet coke and tried to pay with my card. And it was declined. And tried again. And it was declined. Is this some kind of joke? The soda is $1.25... I'm employed, right? I couldn't get to a real person on the phone - probably because i was yelling commands at the prompts. "REPRESENTATIVE", " I HATE YOU: "REAL PERSON". You said, "open a new credit card. Is this correct?" Frustration central. The LS coupon is for the oil change -- excluding taxes -- so i had to shamefacedly explain that my card wasnt working and to fix it, I would have to take my car to the BOA to figure out what was happening. Long story, a little shorter, BOA had put a protection thing on my acct bc I've been christmas shopping a lot lately. For myself. The point here though is that the guy, instead of being rude, condescending or asking me to leave something so that I would come back, handed me my keys and just said take care of it when you can. A few months back, I took my car to Arbor at 10am on a Saturday for a routine oil change. It was my 3rd visit, and I am basing my review on the events that transpired as a result of this visit. I'd noticed some transmission fluid leaking, and asked if they'd check it for me. Since the trans. fluid can't be checked under the hood in my particular car, I had no idea how low it might be. I waited at Austin Diner (next door) and got the call. New transmission gasket and pan to repair a hole, and new fluid. And then a suggestion for something completely unrelated (new struts!), which would've brought my total to some obscene amount. I said "just remedy the leak". Arbor closes at 1PM on Saturdays. It was now 12:30PM. Right at 1:00, my car was "ready". After I paid, I got in it and my steering wheel was covered in grease, and I had black fingerprints all over the door and console. I know the tech was in a hurry to get off work, but really? Yuck. Got the car home with no incident. Did not drive it Sunday. Woke up to drive to work Monday, and my driveway was COVERED in pink transmission fluid. I knew something was terribly wrong. I immediately called Arbor. After some questioning, they did agree to send a tech and a manager to my house to see the car, but instead of towing me back to the shop so as to not risk ruining my transmission by running the car without fluid, the tech just got in my car and took off toward the shop. I felt really weird about this, but thought well, they're the "experts". Later, I heard that the pan (that they charged me for!) had to be replaced because it had a hole. After some explanation, they realized that the tech "forgot" to put on the new pan (again, that I'd already paid for), and they replaced the pan. I picked up my car a little later and there was no charge (for their mistake -- how sweet). I drove directly home. The next morning -- fresh fluid on the driveway. And lots of it. Seriously? Again? I was done w/ Arbor. 2 chances to fix something is plenty. I took my car to Yost (which I should've done in the 1st place!), and they said the "new" pan had been over-torqued when it was put on and had cracked. So another hole in my pan. Yost put on a new pan and a factory gasket (Arbor used a cheapy generic one that didn't fit correctly, hence the over-torquing), and sent me on my way in no time. Moral -- I will not let anyone else touch my car, and will not ever use Arbor again. The service I received was lazy and could've caused a great deal of damage (new transmission!), and no one likes being without their car when they don't have to be. read more

Will never go back - I recommend you never bring your vehicle . They were nice enough but... they do not test drive after repairs and gave me my truck with NO BRAKES!! They changed the pads and rotors on my truck and did not do a test drive to check they worked. The brakes did not work and I almost crashed 100 yards from the shop! They broke the brake calipers while doing the work but did not realize it. They were old & not too expensive so that was not the problem. The problem is that without the calipers you have no braking power & I could have gotten killed. They were annoyed when I came back, said they did nothing wrong and made me wait a week to get it fixed b/c I refused to pay for the labor. How can you send a brake job customer out with no brakes and have not made a major error? Then you act like I am the ass for being pissed when you almost got me killed!! read more

The people working at Arbor and the service manager Matthew is wonderfully helpful. Prices are always reasonable and there is a fast turn around on repairs. My family as well as my in-laws take all our cars here. The staff doesn't try to talk you into repairs you don't need or into more expensive parts than are necessary. My only frustration has been when there is a major repair, or when things keep coming up, they will notify me by phone and let me know, but don't always remember to update the bill estimate for me. I've had a bad surprise twice now, going in and the bill has been higher than expected. I just need to remember to ask them to update the estimate each time they make changes, but it seems like this is something other people will want to know also. read more

As a car owner novice, if they told me that my snoozle was broken I would reply with how much as well as how important this snoozle was. Luckily they haven't tried to pull the old snoozle trick on me. The staff is very friendly and addressed the problem and solution to my car woes. I went there because my car would not pass the state inspection and I couldn't figure out why. It took about 3 weeks of me getting their free consultation and trying things out until finally my car was able to pass. Their free advice and patience with my specific problem is what sets them apart from other automotive repair shops. Their pricing seems fair to the service they preform and they fix the problem at hand rather than try to sell you ever product known to man. So, one star because I was given a refund but I will never take my vehicle here again. I had a check engine light on and knew that it was most likely the gas cap - sometimes it doesn't seal tight and I've had this issue in the past. But just to be safe, we took it in. We asked for an oil change and to have the truck looked over since it had over 100,000 miles on it - figured it was due for some extra maintenance. Ok, short story - over $1200 estimate for items!! Brakes, Spark plugs, Belt, Transmission oil and yes, the actual oil needing to be changed. They also charged $90 to tell me the check engine light was on because of the Gas Cap. No smoke test performed - just hook it up to the little computer, get a code and then tell me that it was what I thought! Well, didn't like these prices so we said no to the service (which they didn't like one bit) and started calling around to get other quotes. Found a different shop and their price for everything (wait for it) - $750!! We went to pick up the truck and were told that the oil had been changed so we paid for that - $43.19. Took it immediately to the other shop and left it in their capable hands. They called the next morning and gave us a run through of what they said needed to be done: front brakes, spark plugs, serpentine belt, battery cleaning and AN OIL CHANGE!! They said the measurement on the stick was under minimum, meaning it was 2-3 quarts low!! But wait, we just paid for an oil change didn't we?? I was furious so I called the store and spoke to someone named Casen. I asked for the Manager - he said that was Sam but Sam was at lunch and he could help me. I was polite and said I would prefer to speak to the Manager. Then, right there on the phone, I heard an eruption from someone who must have been in their shop and was just a little less satisfied than me. I heard it all - shouting, foul language, threats. I even said to Casen that it seemed he had another satisfied customer in the lobby. He quickly took the phone outside and told me he would have Sam call me back. Sam never did but the owner, Winn did. I asked him about the vehicle and he started in on the "safety" issues of our vehicle and a tire that had a nail in it. I politely asked him how it was "safe" for me to drive this vehicle if it didn't have oil in it? There was pause and then with a not so nice voice he told me I could have a refund if I wasn't satisfied. I went today and got my money back and only think it is fair to my neighbors and fellow Austinites to warn about this shop. I live in this neighborhood and try to support local shops all the time. I won't go to this one but if anyone wants the name of the other place we took it to - Friendly's Auto Repair on Tillery Street. read more

Winn has been my go-to mechanic for the past 8 years! I don't ever feel like I'm getting cheated and I'm always spoken to with the facts. They guarantee their work, and this is ever so important with an older car. There have been instances where I have had to take my car back in for the same "issue", but I've always walked out without opening my wallet! I've compared their estimates with other chain shops and Arbor is consistently 15-20% less. You can make appointments online, or call to determine wait times. Winn will even take you back to work if you are in a bind! Personal service is a rare find these days, but Arbor Auto Works is keeping that small town vibe alive! read more

I still think this place is awesome. My car was making a terrible grinding/vibrating noise every time I punched the gas. I was hoping it was just a loose panel, but dreaded needing a new transmission. Either way, this guy had the chance to try and squeeze me for some serious dough. He looked at my car, found nothing wrong, and charged me nothing! I insisted on paying him for his time, but he said it was no big deal. WoooHooo! The mechanic suggested that the noise I was hearing was likely coming from a defect in the axle (an imbalance I'm guessing). All the components checked out and there were no safety hazards. There are some auto shops out there that would jump on a chance like this to charge hundreds or thousands of dollars for repair--not this place :) read more

I had a pretty troublesome car for a while there. A catastrophic coolant leak forced me to look for a repair shop in the immediate neighborhood, so I took it over to Arbor. They did a great job, fixed it in a day (and for a reasonable price). When I arrived to pick it up, they went over each charge on my bill with me, explaining which parts cost more and why (available only from the dealer). They even told me what went wrong and what I could do to keep it from reoccurring. I took it back for another issue not long after. More same day service, but this time when they called with the final bill it was more than the estimate. I explained the difference and prepared for a big fight, but they agreed to eat the extra cost to deliver the car for the original estimate. Mighty impressive! I've used them for inspections, too, and they're super quick. Good guys who deserve your patronage. read more

Arbor Auto Works saved the day when my car's sunroof got stuck open during a rainy spell. When I called and explained the issue, they told me to come right in and they'd see what they could do. The technician, Goose, worked hard to figure out the issue, a problem with the switch, and he was able to fix it. In the end, they charged me a reasonable amount, just an hour of labor, even though he spent more time than that if you include the time he spent trying to diagnose the problem. I really appreciated that they took me in on a moment's notice, worked hard to figure out the problem and fix it, and charged fairly. I will be back! read more

So. I bought a living social coupon for here for a $14 oil change. Their website isn't the best, and the waiting room isn't much to look at, but the service was deserving of the 4.5 stars. There was someone ahead of me, so I had to wait ~15 mins before they could get my car in the garage and start the oil change. Once they got my car on the lift, they were done within 10 minutes. The manager (forget his name, maybe Mike) suggested I change my air filter as it was pretty filthy. Quoted me $16, with free installation. I passed as I'm inherently leery of mechanics and I thought I'd be able to get a filter for cheaper on my own. After I left, I drove to walmart to get a new air filter. He wasn't lying when he told me it was a good price; I paid $17+ tax to get the same air filter at Walmart and had to install it myself (not a big deal as installation is completely trivial on my car). Summary: 4.5 stars (rounded up). Would have been 5 if they had free coffee and/or a tv. No hidden fees or pressure sales, quick service and fair prices. Can't ask for much more when you need a lube change. Bring a book or music in case you need to wait a few minutes. read more

I got in and out for my state inspection so quickly and the owner went above and beyond to help me with an issue I'd been having trying to get my out-of-state car registered in Texas. I mentioned what a difficult time I was having working with the DMV. Not only did he tell me exactly what I needed to complete the process, he kindly printed out my insurance card for me and suggested I go to an Auto title place just 5 minutes up the road. After 4 trips to the state DMV being told I needed something different every time the satellite office he suggested got me processed in 10 minutes. I will definitely be a return customer!! read more

I would like to submit a complaint for this shop. I had an old Camry (03) with an exhaust leak. This place is right around the corner from my house and as I am new to Austin, i figured i would try to at least get a quote. Well, quotes here cost 55.00 USD. Meaning, even if i chose not to do the service, they charge for assessment. Further, the woman running the computer said she was 'unsure' if mechanic would waive that fee even if i agreed to the stated labor per their assessment. Onto their assessment- They quoted me at 717usd (480 for flex pipe, 238 for labor) for replacing my flex pipe. This is absolutely absurd. I paid their fee for looking at my vehicle because I had no choice and resolved to never return here again. I found a humble muffler shop on airport Blvd and the mechanics were replacing my flex pipe and some other rusty piping within 30 mins for a price of 150usd. Do not go to Arbor Auto Works. read more

My wife has taken her car to these folks for a couple of years . . . minor things like inspections and oil changes. Recently, she took my car for inspection and it failed because of the emergency brake. So, I called my mobile brake guys and they admitted the estimate we received from Arbor was fair. So, we said go ahead and fix the parking brake since it was already on the rack (this was not a cheap fix). Anyway, my wife also mentioned a few other minor things. They said they'd take a look. No mention of additional costs. So we get the final bill and it is $130 more than was quoted. The charged for an AC system check and something else we didn't need. My wife always highly recommended these guys. No longer. They made a big mistake taking advantage of my wife because she didn't know about cars. If it been me doing business with them, I don't think they would have pulled this. Do business with these guys at your own peril. read more

I see there are lots of mixed reviews about this place but I just had a nice experience with them and wanted to share. My car got stuck at my work, across the street from these guys. The key or ignition switch is messed up. So i walked over and the owner's son drove me over to check it out. There was a little bit of confusion about having the techs come out to diagnose after they said they could so I was just going to leave, but the owner came out himself instead. He was very kind and was going to write out an estimate for me for what he thinks the problem may be. I was not charged for this service-- it is surprising when neighbors help out neighbors and I am hoping they will be able to repair the issues. read more

Rude and inept. That's all these people are. The technicians are very nice but the desk staff is incredibly rude. I completely got that feeling many women have when they visit a egotistic mechanic who doesn't think a woman knows a thing about cars. Rude. Rude. Rude. Rude. I went to have my husbands car inspected and they failed his car but it turns out that they actually gave us the report for a completely different vehicle. His car would have passed if they could read that he has a Hyundai and not a 1992 Maxima....after two trips back trying to solve a problem that never existed. read more

The Arbor Auto Works folks are untrustworthy and slimy. At first they were helpful. They looked at my car which was leaking oil and said it was probably from a plug on the side and it would probably be $100 to $150 to fix. I didn't drop it off then and I could see the oil was coming out of the CAM plug. I dropped it off later and they said they would look at it for free and would call me with an estimate. When they called, they said it was also leaking from the oil nut on the bottom (clearly not the problem and likely fixable by putting on a special washer when the oil is next changed) and it would take $520 to fix them both and $260 to fix just the CAM plug. I called around and most other places were saying closer to $130 to fix the CAM plug. So I told them not to do the repair. When I stopped to pick up my car, they pushed me for where I would take it and charged me $40 'for the estimate' that they promised me would be free. When I complained, they said "well, we had someone look at it and they need to be paid." I eventually had the car taken to Dealership Alternative which did a great job for $110 (and they actually would have fixed my old CAM plug for only $60 if it hadn't been a cheap plastic aftermarket plug). If you do choose to get your service done here, CHECK THEIR RATES. And make sure that what they say need fixing really does need fixing. read more
