DO NOT TRUST THIS SHOP WITH YOUR VEHICLE. In November/December, I brought my car in for a minor knocking sound that only occurred over speed bumps in freezing weather. Tech One handed me a predatory $4,600+ estimate and used high-pressure "safety" tactics, telling me my car was "unsafe for long-distance driving" and that these repairs were an immediate necessity. They tried to "parts-cannon" my entire suspension based on a cold-weather noise. They claimed I needed: Front Strut & Coil Spring Assembly ($1,091.23) Rear Suspension Shock Absorbers ($820.95) Upper & Lower Control Arms (Both Sides) ($808.78) Inner & Outer Tie Rod Ends ($455.59), It is now April 7th. I have driven thousands of miles since their "emergency" diagnosis, including daily commutes and multiple long-distance trips between Austin and San Antonio. The car has performed perfectly. The "knocking" disappeared completely as soon as the weather warmed up, proving it was just cold-weather bushing noise--not a mechanical failure. I took the car to a trusted mechanic in San Antonio, for a second opinion. He confirmed my suspension is perfectly fine. He pointed out that my aftermarket rims are heavy and could cause wear eventually, but confirmed nothing was actually broken. Tech One completely ignored the obvious (rim weight) so they could try to charge me $4,000+ for parts that didn't need replacing. They insisted I needed a new engine oil filter adapter/cooler for "safety." On my vehicle, this is a known component that eventually fails and mixes oil and coolant. They tried to exploit that "known issue" to scare me into a massive repair. Five months later, my temperatures are rock steady, and I have zero overheating or mixing issues. They were fishing for a "preventative" job by framing it as a crisis. Before I realized what they were doing, I let them replace my radiator, serpentine belt, tensioner, and idler pulley. They charged me over $600 just for the belt/tensioner portion--an absolute robbery for a routine maintenance task. Tech One Automotive is more interested in hitting high sales quotas than providing honest diagnostics. They will tell you your car is a safety hazard to get you to cough up $5,000. Do not take their word for anything. Get a second opinion and look at their parts markups before you sign anything. They are predatory and I hope someone files a complaint with the BBB, I just might. read more

Following up after a month or two. Dropped like $2k here on brakes and AC. Repeatedly (3x, on every contact) told them there was a Freon leak. They recharged the Freon without fixing the leak and guess what-- AC stopped working after a month. Brakes squeak whenever I stop. I do wish I had my $2k back. read more

Updating my review. I do not go to Tech One any more. I had an issue with a 1994 Toyota pickup, you know, the ones that are bullet proof. It's a standard and wasn't staying in gear. Tech One determined I needed a new transmission. I was in a trusting stage of the relationship so I went with it. It was expensive. Each time I picked it up, the transmission would leak. I must have taken it back 4 times before it wasn't leaking. In the meantime my AC was broken somehow, and that became my problem. I found out then that they had been subbing out the work to another shop. In the end, I'm curious if I really needed a new transmission at all. I also had them change the shocks at this time. I was getting the truck inspected by the shop I go to now and asked them to look at the shocks because I was making a lot of noise on speed bumps and rough roads. They said the shocks were barely bolted on and I was lucky to have not run into an issue. If you're doing something easy and routine, Tech One is probably still a good place. If your quote has a comma in it, get a second opinion. read more

The work I did need done (rear brake pads and rotor replacement) was quoted for $775. When I told him he must think I'm rich, he said they could do it for $675. I inquired about Highlander, hybrid 36K Maintenance & installing catalytic shield. Was told they could do the 36K maintenance in one visit and could install catalytic shield if I brought part in as they didn't carry them. Ordered shield, paying more for next day delivery, and went to my appointment. I waited 40 minutes before they moved my car into the shop. 40 minutes later they came out and said my car was done -- but they hadn't done any work. They couldn't give me a quote on the cost of installing catalytic shield because they didn't know how long it would take them to do the job but guesstimated it would be a couple of hours. (Ok, not what they said on the phone. I guess I just wasted overnight delivery cost.) Then he said they didn't do the maintenance either. WHAT???? I just wasted my time!!! He said the 2 hours I scheduled wasn't enough time for them to do the work but they did an estimate and I should come back. Yeah, right. Researching catalytic converter shield install, it was an hour, not a couple of hours. Dealer cost on the shield was less than what I paid ordering directly from the manufacturer, but they didn't have the part on hand. I read Tech One had good reviews, but if they couldn't be upfront and say I was just coming in for an estimate, what BS!!! I should have just gone to the dealer. I've been a customer for over 3 years at this point and while I've been to other places on occasion for minor services such as inspections etc. I always come back here for big stuff because I trust them with my car. I've had them replace issues on my 2012 Honda several times and never had to come back for the same thing, as an anxious driver, having a car shop that I fully trust to ensure I'm safe on the road is really huge for me. Recently, they've renovated their location to make the waiting area a separate coworking-esque lounge with good wifi, coffee and snacks. So you can get stuff done while they look at your car and fix it This is HUGE because you can stay put and get some work done and then just leave when your car is ready! They totaled my car and I can not believe how awful this place treated me AFTER they were the ones to total my car while test driving after 3 days of service. After a visit to the dentist this morning, I brought my Explorer ST to address a piece of the underbody hanging down. It's one of those things I've been meaning to get fixed for a while. (The neighbor left a rake out in the middle of the street and the tines caught this underbody covering.) Mind you, my car had been serviced by Covert Ford several times without any mention of fixing this. (Guys, I'd have probably paid a labor charge and/or a new part if you'd told me.) It's just never been a priority, but I remembered getting some coupons in the mail from Tech One, so I decided to give them a try. This morning, they told me there'd be a 30-45 minute wait to get my ride on a lift to see what needed doing. They also gave me the option of coming back right after lunch as there'd likely be less of a wait, if any. Literally within five minutes of coming in, they took my car back. In less than an hour, it was fixed. They told me all it needed was a few new bolts -- and no charge. Needless to say, their speed, attention to detail, and pride in workmanship is vastly superior to the dealer experience. As such, they've earned my business. read more

We've gone here for years and we appreciate their responsiveness, communication, and willingness to work out scheduling of repairs so it works for their shop and our schedules. And they do good work. Recently, I picked up my car after my husband dropped it off for work we had done related to a check engine light. I paid the bill, which seemed a little steep for the work done, and went home. When I got home and looked at the bill, I was surprised that the cost of getting the check engine light diagnosed was $200. We had the work that caused the light to come on done, so I understand charging for a diagnostic if the customer does not get further work done, but this seems excessive, especially if hundreds of dollars of work are being done on top of the diagnosis cost. Next time something like this comes up, I am definitely going to be more careful and look for something less expensive. read more

This review is long overdue and I can't say enough about how amazing Tech One is! I've been going to them for almost 10 years and they've taken care of three of my cars. They've done multiple pre-purchase assessments for me and I've appreciated their feedback and input every time. They're knowledgeable regardless if it's a luxury or regular car. Everyone working there is really experienced and incredibly nice. Their waiting room is beautiful and they'll even provide you transposition to home/work/etc. if you don't want to wait there. They aren't the least expensive but also not the most expensive. I trust their judgement and would pay a little more for peace of mind every time. They stand behind their work and have even fixed things at no cost when there was something additional going on than they thought. Knowing how mechanics have taken advantage of women, I've never felt they were doing that to me. I've seen them take their time explaining issues/working through the best way to move forward with it's someone that's older and having trouble understanding. I have had my transmission fluid and my oil changed here a few times, and I thought they were trustworthy. I would also like to start by saying that Austin gave great customer service, outside of that, I was appalled by the way I was treated. I came in because my car hit 100,000 miles, and I wanted to get it checked up. I also had a sensor go off telling me that my coolant fluid was overheated, and I asked them to look into it. They first tried to tell me it was a coolant leak but could not find the leak. Then, they ran codes on my transmission and told me that I needed a new transmission. I asked multiple times why they thought that, and they kept referring to the code. I looked up the code that they got, and all it indicated was that my transmission had overheated, which we already knew from the sensor. They had my car for over 24 hours and could not give me a solid answer on what was wrong with my car. In the end, the whole experience felt off. Aside from that, the quotes they gave me for other maintenance that was needed was nearly $2000 to get my spark plugs and my brake pads changed. I don't know a lot about cars, but I know that is a ridiculous markup. So I got opinions from two other mechanics, and both told me that it was just a transmission fluid leak that was easily fixed. Both of the other mechanics also quoted me for the other maintenance repairs, including fixing the leak, and it was only around $1000. Which is a lot more reasonable. I do not know if the mechanics here are just incompetent or if they are trying to take advantage of me because I am a woman, and they think that I am not smart enough to question them or get a second opinion. Either way, I do not recommend this place to anyone. Go to Austin Automotive Specialists they have much better overall service, and they don't try to charge you ridiculous markups. read more

I heard about tech in from Yelp and thought I give them a try since I was new to the area from the reviews. I've gotten transmission, oil change, brakes & etc service from them. I recently, went to auto zone and had to change my battery just because it was time. The tech at auto zone was removing the battery and noticed that the engine filter hose was not connected to the filtering system and that there was no transmission filler cap. I thought I could trust this place but I no longer can. I got a oil change in December 2020 and I'm not sure if this is when they didn't do there job right or if it's been even longer than that and just not simply being check. I'm super disappointed and I would invest money or trust them with routine car maintenance. read more

I had my KIA Niro PHEV stealer, um, I mean dealer serviced for an oil change and they tried to upsell me $700+ for a cabin filter change, clutch fluid change, and fuel injection service. I had Tech One do the clutch fluid change and they charged 1/2 what the dealer wanted. I was in and out in 45 minutes. They have a roomy, clean, and comfortable waiting area to boot. read more

This is a professional establishment that cares and takes care of their customers. First of all it was recommended by my daughter who's co-workers come here and are very happy with the place. I needed to get a spare tire installed on my SUV. When I dropped off the vehicle they gave me a ride home in a very nice clean car and the man felt very safe he was driving. When the car was done they came and picked me up!! I know this is an unusual situation but when I got there they told me they installed the spare tire at no charge. I was aghast. I could not believe it. They were so kind so friendly so professional!!! They gained my respect that's for sure!!!!!!! I had two other places tell me they might not be able to get the tire on the vehicle because of some rust underneath and really gave me the Debbie Downer answer. These people were totally the opposite. I will recommend them to everyone I meet that is looking for service for their car. The only thing they don't do is body work.
