Amazing work! I had my car break and the check engine light came on, with my car shaking profusely while driving on the road. How unsafe! I had it towed from work to the Kia dealership and they quoted me $400 for 1 ignition coil + spark plugs to be replaced or $800 for all 4 ignition coils + spark plugs replaced. Not wanting to have another fail but also not wanting to be out that huge amount of money, I asked Austin auto tech what they'd charge for that work on my Kia. Previously being there and having my car info in their system, they looked me up, passed my info onto someone else to give me an estimate and said they'd call right back. It wasn't more than 5-10 mins max on a Friday morning that Craig called me back and quoted me $211 or $494.89 for the completely the same work the dealership was going to do. Amazing! :-) I begged them to see if they could have my car back early next week as they are open during my work hours, thus it was a bit inconvenient to have to be out a car for several days, but Monday morning at like 8:30am, they let me know my car was all ready to go! These are my go to guys for quite a few years and quite a few cars. They are alway kind, courteous in the office and on the phone, the guys who actually work on the car I don't see them but I have absolutely no complaints only compliments for them and the job they do. I always wait for the work to be done on my cars and it's not a bad place to sit and wait. Clean as a whistle, I would say. Well i am going to follow up on Jack N's 5 star with one of my own. We needed a complete auto check up after my Son bought a car with no history. The service from the dealer was asking over $700, and most of that cost were just inspections...not replacements ! This shop is run by crooks. They took advantage of my lack of car knowledge. My splash guard had come undone, so I took it to this shop to ask if it was it was necessary or could be removed. I was advised they would remove it, said they wouldn't charge without my permission, but when I came to pick it up, they tried to charge $40. Even worse, they LIED. I went to my dealership for a checkup, and sure enough, the splash guard IS a necessary $500 replacement. The dealership was correct, after doing research. Austin Auto Techs could've fixed the problem with something as simple as zip ties. My mistake was TRUSTING them. I suspect they took my splash guard and sold it themselves. read more

Came from an hour away to look at a car off 2222, dealers lied to me about work that had been done, so hired this shop to do a full pre-purchase inspection. The guys here were wonderful, taking time to go throughly thru the car and explaining everything to me, including that due to not being able to find a slit to stick the camera into, they couldn't tell between no access and the carfax/VIN search in repair records had the timing belt ever been replaced. They were kind enough to even break down pricing on what they would charge to repair my car's issue should I buy it, as guidance to the negotiation process, knowing I would likely be doing repairs closer to home. Not only all that, this shop also got me in pretty much spur of the moment and charged me about $120 if I remember right? , (As it was a Honda I also called the dealership where price was $230 and tho it was just a pre-purchase inspection they told me the standard to keep the car was 2 days; wtf?) As a woman who knows first the horrors of shady shops and now has educated herself on some mechanics thanks to poor experiences in the past, I can confidently say I will recommend this shop and return to it should I ever be near ATX and need repairs. This place is great. I have been using them for around 10 years now on three different cars. A few members of my family, and many of my coworkers have used them as well. They are always very helpful, their prices are reasonable, and I have never had any issues with the work they have done. They have never up-sold me on unnecessary maintenance. Any time I have had to use other shops or the dealership for whatever reason, I have always regretted it, and a few times had to have them fix what was done. Last year they tipped me off that one issue with my car was covered under a recall, and therefore I could get it fixed for free at the dealership. And when I have an issue that isn't in the scope, they always offer great advice. Oh my goodness. I am so excited I found this place. I am a 24 year old female, so as you can imagine, every time I go into an auto repair shop or a car dealership, I feel like a steak surrounded by wolves. I will go in for an oil change and be told that this filter needs to be replaced or that fluid needs to be changed. After going to one particular dealership and receiving a long list of things that needed to be fixed on my car (even though I went in because I had a bent mud flap), I decided to end the debate once and for all by getting a 60,000 mile maintenance service so that I could see exactly what needed to be done. I found Austin Auto Techs on Yelp (so thanks so much for the advice!!!) and asked for a quote on what it would cost for the 60k maintenance and for a yearly inspection. I was quoted about $200 for both, which seemed very reasonable, even low. When I picked up the car, I was dumbfounded. It was only $168 total, and that was INCLUDING the $55 it cost to fix my oil drain pan that had been stripped at the plug (something that the last mechanic screwed up when he changed my oil). Auto Techs explained that my cabin and air filters looked brand new, so there was no need to replace them. So that's why the total ended up being lower than expected. I have NEVER taken my car in to a place and paid less than the expected price. In fact, I almost always pay more than the amount I am originally told. I just thought that was how the car world worked. But Austin Auto Tech was extremely professional, honest, and very reasonably priced. They could have just not told me about the filters and let me pay the quoted price, and I would have been none the wiser. But they have ethics, people. ETHICS. Oh by the way, when I asked what things on my car needed to be fixed in the near future so that I don't die in a fiery crash, they said my car looked fine. Unlike the dealership, who made it seem like I was driving around in my own casket. I will definitely be coming here anytime I ever need any maintenance or repairs done in the future. read more

The Austin car repair landscape is a minefield, people. It's full of cheats and incompetents who will do anything for a dishonest buck. Thank God there are guys like Hugh and Brian at Auto Tech, a garage located behind the Randall's store in the Braker/ Jollyville area of NW Austin. Hugh Prifogle and Brian Perlinger are intelligent, articulate mechanics who do great work at fair prices. It's as simple as that. They run an honest shop, are easy to talk to, and respect the fact that the reason you are taking your car to them is because they have the knowledge to fix it and you don't. Even better, they'll explain what's wrong in language you can understand, and they'll offer to give you the parts they're replacing. Auto repair places are supposed to do this, but it's rare, and getting rarer. Here's another plus: these guys are hands-on owners. When you drop your car off, you will talk to either Hugh or Brian. When you pick your car up after it's been repaired, you will talk to either Hugh or Brian. These guys have a stake in your satisfaction, and you sense that every time you interact with them. Before we moved to San Marcos, this was our garage, and we told everyone we knew that they should absolutely take their vehicles to Hugh and Brian for service. We never heard a single complaint. Here's how good this place is - I'm giving them five stars and they didn't even fix my car. Here's what happened: My car's engine would just suddenly turn off while I was driving. As you can imagine, when this happens on the freeway it's a little disconcerting. I had recently had a terrible experience with my last mechanic, and I had heard good things about Austin Auto Techs, so I brought it here. They kept it for about a day and a half, doing a bunch of tests on it, but couldn't get it to happen again. However, they didn't charge me a DIME, even though they had it nearly a day and a half and ran any number of tests on it, including driving it around. Moreover, the owner of the shop called me personally a day later and told me that this particular problem was the subject of a Honda recall, and I could just take it to my Honda dealer and they would fix it for free. They could have told me they needed to replace the entire ignition system and I wouldn't have known any better. They certainly could have said I needed to pay for the work they had done on it and I would have done it. Instead they told me where I could get my car fixed for free, and didn't even charge me for a day and a half's work on it. I'm usually distrustful of auto mechanics, but these guys definitely deserve your trust and business. I'll be going there every time from now on. Five stars. read more

As Hugh mentioned in his comment, we did in fact speak over the phone about my previous yelping. As for specifics, here's an example: they replaced the rear brakes on one visit, which recently failed... catastrophically. Since rear brakes are basically a glorified parking brake I replaced them myself rather than argue over another warranty issue. "That's weird" was the only response Hugh had to offer, before he continued to berate my review, completely ignoring the fact that I had been driving 70 miles an hour when the fail occurred. I later opened the drums to discover the brake components (what was left of them) had been reduced to charcoal. The hose they "reconnected" has also been replaced, since it had completely collapsed. The alternator I replaced 3 times was aftermarket and therefore did not have the diode this Ford design requires - I've replaced this again as well. On the phone he accused me of libel, and on his comment he calls me slanderous. 'Nuff said - if that's not enough "substance", just do it right the first time. read more

April 8, 2013 I had 2 strange sounds for Austin Auto Techs to investigate. Each investigation ran me $29.95 for a total bill of $59.90. I left with a report that they couldn't determine what was causing the sound but that it was not a problem. September 18, 2013 Sounds persist and I take the car to my tried and true, Toyota of Plano. Toyota informed me that the sources of the strange sounds were two worn out components that if left unattended would cause further damage. I'm sold. Friendly, knowledgeable and honest. The trinity for my car care needs. Last month I needed a jump, so called triple A. They sent out some dude from a local shop. He was nice enough, except he tried to charge me about $180 to replace my battery and one terminal. Auto mechanic I am not, but I knew that was a bunch o malarkey. Malarkey, I say! So I declined, had him jump me ( my CAR), and drove it over to the Auto Techs (I had already researched on Yelp, and decided that I would try them). It was late, so I left my key and a note ( they have envelopes).I also needed an inspection, so I had requested that they do that as well as replace my battery. About 10AM the next morning, one of the mechanics called and told me I would need a new windshield wiper in order to pass inspection. I told him that I thought I had purchased one a while back, and being the lazy person I am, had not put it on. This guy agreed to go rooting through my (cluttered) car to look for said wiper. Fast forward one hour. I get a call that my car is ready, and the tab for everything was just a little over $100. Ha! The really super part of all this is that when I went to pick up my car, I saw that there were several items piled on my back seat (from when the mechanic was looking for the windshield wiper). After my visit today, I have to make Auto Techs my new to go place for my car needs. I hit a curb causing the front underguard shield to break off and drag. They were able to put it back in place, but what was amazing was how friendly these guys were. I was a bit taken aback when the guy in front attempted to make small chit chat with me. My last experience with an auto place was Sears, which had terrible customer service (see review for details), so it was a bit unexpected. They repaired my car quick. I took my car in a few days ago because I heard a knocking noise. I was sure that it was something super expensive. I got a call from Hugh. It turns out that Just Brakes did not tighten my lugnuts and my front wheel was loose and about to fall off!!! He said everything was fine and that he made sure the lugnuts were tightened to factory specifications. I'll never go anywhere else again. I highly recommend these guys. They are friggin great. An auto repair shop that has 5-star average rating over almost 30 reviews? Impossible. But I believed it when I saw it firsthand. Thanks to a windy road in the rain, I bumped my car into a guardrail, which caused my steering wheel to have to point 20 degrees to the left for my car to go straight. So based on co-worker and Yelp recommendations, I went to Austin Auto Techs. I called at 7:00 AM on a Friday, but they wouldn't be able to check out my car until Monday morning. After having my boyfriend drive me around all weekend, I finally took in my car to the shop at 7:00 AM on Monday. My boyfriend picked me up and dropped me back off at home so that I could work remotely from the comfort of my study. Around noon, the Techs called me back to notify me that they didn't find any broken or bent up parts, so they would just fix the alignment, which they contract out to NTB to do. I asked if $98 was comparable with other places, and they were very honest with their answer (yes, it's pretty much the same no matter where you go, at most a $5 difference), as well as where they would recommend I take it in if I didn't go through them (NTB). I was able to pick up my car by 4:15 PM that afternoon, and Hugh handed me a mug as a welcome for being a first-time customer. It had also just started pouring buckets of rain, so Omar ran out to my car and drove it under the roof so that I would be spared of the downpour. And if that isn't enough, all the work they do is under warranty for 12,000 miles. The verdict: Wow! I never want to take my car anywhere else in Austin. Thank you, Austin Auto Techs! I'll be visiting them when I need to change my timing belt at 90,000 miles. read more

I looked up the top 2 or 3 mechanics for my 4runner according to yelp and it came down to Dealership Alternative, Ike's and Auto Techs for a recent repair. Took it in to Ike's and they came back with a $579 estimate. Auto Tech's said $543. And Dealership Alternative although I really like them is just too far from my house. Auto techs took me home after I dropped off my car, picked me up the next day and when I asked about a cash discount they told me they could do 3% off. I'm sold. - Truck is running great now and it was a piece of cake to work with them. - I'll definitely use them for everything from now on, after getting a few other estimates of course. read more

Been going to this mechanic shop for years and through 2-3 different cars. I keep going back because they are the most honest and straightforward auto repair shop I have ever dealt with. The latest example, which is prompting me to review them, is Mike working with me to get by brakes fixed. I had them replaced about a year ago, but kept getting a squeaking noise on them. I took them back a few times for the same issue and they stayed true to the warranty. Even though I think I am past the warranty, Mike replaced the pads and buffed the rotors at no cost. ok so my girlfriends car failed inspection. Looked to yelp for help on a mechanic. Did not steer me wrong. We took it in they checked it told us it was the Catalytic converter. We have to get it replaced to pass inspection.. a bit of a pricy repair if they were to do it. So they called a good friend who does muffler work. Gave us his card, he said they quoted him 175 dollars less. So he actually referred us to someone else so it would be cheaper!! But when we called the place he referred us to 3 weeks later after scraping up money. They quoted us almost 150 more than the price we quoted at Auto Techs. So I did what any sane person would do .. ordered the part myself and me and my dad fixed it ourselves.. 380 dollars later So in the long run had I went with these guys I feel they would have been honest with me. read more

Let me tell you a story about my car and my experiences with mechanics. My last car had major work done to it such as the timing belt, etc. I was getting charged an arm and a leg. I learned my lesson and for the car I have now, I keep a diary of everyone and everything that touches my car. I take my car over to Firestone to get my oil change and tires rotated (because I already had bought a lifetime warranty before I met Austin Auto Techs). Every time I take it to Firestone they tell something else is wrong with my car. They give me a ridiculous estimate every time. So I call Austin Auto Techs to talk to them to give me their estimate. Hands down, they blow people out of the water!!! They are also so honest and I love that quality! An example, Firestone said that I needed my brakes flushed and then proceeded to give me an outrageous quote. I then contacted Austin Auto Techs to see if I can bring it over so they could look at it and maybe fix the problem. Well one of the mechanics went out to my car and told me that I didn't need my brakes flushed. I appreciate that kind of honesty. After I left there I went to NTB to get my alignment done (because again I had bought a 3 year contract from there) and they told me the same thing as Austin Auto Tech did that I didn't need my brakes flushed. So, now I have finally found a place that I can trust and take my car to and they will not give me an outrageous estimate. Thanks guys! read more

Thank you Yelpers. After reading all the positive reviews, I took my car here after it failed an inspection. I dropped it off one morning. They called that afternoon. I picked it up after work. And all it cost me was labor. Less than $100. Now granted, this is partly because there wasn't really a whole lot wrong with my car. But let's be honest, they could've told me there was, and I wouldn't have known the difference. Turns out a hose had been knocked loose (they hypothesize the last time I got the air filter changed). These guys are amazing! At first I was a little thrown off about having to make an appointment with them just to get a state inspection, but after their service, I understand why. When my car initially failed the inspection due to the check engine light being on, they took time to explain everything to me and got right down to diagnosing the problem and making time to do the work that day. An auto repair place with 5 stars!? How many family members can they have to post for them I ask? A friend (no relation to Hugh or Brian) actually recommended I try them out. Living South my first reaction was why? You know how many auto places I pass by on S Lamar alone? I was having lunch that way, needed an oil change and decided to give them a try. I dropped off my car during lunch time and it was ready after coming back from eating. That was easy enough! Upon check out Hugh gave me an estimate for some belts I planned on replacing soon. A few weeks later I received a nice surprise in the mail from them with not only a reminder my car's inspection was due that month, but also a 10% off services coupon. I called a day prior (spoke to someone besides Hugh) to confirm dropping off my car for the belt change and inspection. The next day I was told by Hugh that unfortunately he would not be able to complete the job as someone was out. Hugh was apologetic about it. He told me he would take care of me any day of next week and I was fine with that. I understand staffing and did not leave a number for them to call me. I ended up taking care of the inspection somewhere else and returned the following week for the belt change. Hugh called during the belt change to let me know they found seepage in my water pump. I had expected that with my car having over 150k miles. What was nice is that at least they looked FIRST before telling me. With past cars the auto shops would automatically tell me I should get a water pump without even looking when I had my belts changed. And that is what takes Hugh and Austin Auto Techs over the top to deserve 5 stars! The job was completed in a timely manner, Hugh always communicated with me before I ever thought "wonder what's going on with my car", I used a 10% discount, and Adam was pleasant when I picked up my car. There's a point where service goes beyond normal service, and I feel this business and these guys, (whom I know most by name), provide great auto service and customer service many times over again.
