Thu was able to help me understand what was urgent, what repairs could wait and any other options to consider. He was able to cut the other quote IN HALF and complete the work within days. After an unexpected and strange throttle wiring issue, they went out of their way to locate a hard to find replacement for me in a salvage yard, on a Saturday (they are closed that day) The staff onsite is usually the same familiar faces. I think it is a good sign that a business is managed well when employees stay. Raymond and everyone else there has always been helpful, polite and gracious - everytime. They've done some routine maintenance and repairs for me. I live in South Austin and really don't like to come to North Austin at all if I can help it, but this place is worth the drive. I am always nervous taking my car somewhere as a woman because of people upping the price or just doing sketchy stuff in general but throughout the entire process with 5star they made me feel confident I choose the right place. I brought in my 2002 4Runner to have the control arms replaced (highly recommend this service if you have a 96-02 4Runner, btw). When I picked it up the suspension was still shaky but at 250k miles I figured it was just the way things were. 5 star said they saw no further issues with the suspension so I ignored it for the next few thousand miles. Fast forward to today: I took it in for further diagnostic at a Toyota dealer. What was the shaking you ask? 5 STAR DIDN'T TIGHTEN THE BOLTS ON THE CONTROL ARMS AND THEY WERE COMPLETELY LOOSE!! Control arms are a vital part of the steering components and keep the wheels pointed in the direction you turn the wheel. Had one of them bounced loose I most certainly would've had an accident. Unbelievable. I attached a photo of what would have happened had the loose bolts come off of my 4Runner. It's not my car, but easily could've been. read more

Nice shop, with prices that aren't exorbitant and people who don't try to rip you off by suggesting unnecessary repairs. I got an estimate for replacement shocks over the phone. It was on the high side of what's reasonable, but still not too bad. I wasn't sure if I needed just the front shocks replaced, or front and rear, so I got both estimates. You can usually negotiate car places down, but I'd heard good things about them and I don't like haggling, so I said ok and brought my car in. After getting the car checked out (which took about 15 minutes), they told me that I only needed front shocks replaced, and those were finished the next day. They found a minor problem that they fixed for free, so they overall price turned out pretty decent even without haggling. I'll definitely take my car back here; it's so nice having a good mechanic you can actually trust. read more

They chose their name well. I am blown away by the level of service and integrity these guys provide every time I take my car in, and they have become the only place I will take it. Unlike other mechanics who nickel and dime you every time they have to turn a screw, these guys will actually throw small services in for free (e.g. went in for an oil change, they noticed my coolant was low and topped it up). They do that in addition to having some of the lowest prices in Austin. They will even text you photos of problems they find, explain what's going on, and tell you the options for fixing it. After a few hours of leaving my car in the shop, it was determined there was a leak in an air hose along with a broken sensor. I have spent thousands of dollars at this place on labor alone. While on the cheap side, their customer service and mechanical knowledge are inferior to most mechanic shops. Sometimes dealing with Long is like dealing with a girl on PMS. One minute he has time to fix it, then he doesn't have time. Then says come in tomorrow. Tomorrow comes, whoops sorry we don't have time. Threw my credit card when I demanded a refund for an incorrect part that he ordered. Their time estimates for fixing something always off, usually by 100-200%. So if they tell you to wait an hour, usually it implies wait 2+ hours. They tell you car will be ready in three days, realistically give it a week. Now on their mechanical ability, the staff is incompetent when it comes to German cars. I've literally had some sort of a screw up with them more often than not. They broke my door handle molding and just glued it on, lost my key, blew a radiator, broke a window control, incorrectly diagnosed an alternator issue that later nearly led me to a 70mph collision when my car died all of a sudden, not to mention the money wasted on the false diagnostic itself and the towing costs. Basically with this place you get what you pay for. Cheap repairs that lead to more problems, with terrible customer service. read more

My boyfriend has been coming here for years and he is always happy with the service, price, and quality of work. And believe me, that's saying a lot because he's pretty picky when it comes to his cars. I've been fortunate enough to say that I've never had any trouble with my car so I haven't had to go to any auto shop. However, I got a call from my sister saying that her car broke down in the middle of the road. It was 10 pm so obviously they were closed but we were able to take the car there and leave it in the front. They have a conveniently located key drop box in the front of the building. This is a family run business and when you take your car there you're getting quality work. They tell you what's wrong with your car without all the BS you get from other mechanics.
