Upon returning to Austin my dad said this place is a must for any mechanical work. Over past 6 months I have been 3 times for oil change, brakes, etc. I can't speak more highly of them. Always honest and punctual - customer oriented. We all want a trusted mechanic and I feel as tho I have found one. On my second visit I mentioned I was concerned about my brakes - I arrived expecting to replace and was told the brakes would be inspected. After a short wait I was told brakes are in good condition. Starting this year, my car's been needing to have its oil topped off around every 3-4 months. I decided to come in here earlier in the year to see what all the fuss was. At the time, I had no idea that an oil top off was different than an oil change (thanks to previous places that said every time my oil light came on, I needed an oil change). These guys took the time to thoroughly explain to me what it really means to be low on oil, what an oil change does and that with luxury cars, its a known issue they just burn oil faster and need to be topped off in between oil changes. Then they topped it off and sent me on my way A month later, the light came on again and I took it in asking if they could just check if something was wrong. I had never had to add oil at this rate and there must be something loose or wrong with my car to be needing another oil top off. They said no problem, they'd take a look. In the end, after spending 30 minutes with my car examining every possible issue, they told me everything looked good and it was just that my car burns oil at a ridiculous amount. I felt bad because they genuinely took the time to check out everything due to my suspicions of being lied to by car mechanics. They topped me off and didn't charge me a single thing, said it was on them. I came in earlier to get my oil topped off again and air put into my tires. They were unable to get my hood open and recommended I drop by the dealership to get it checked out. They showed me exactly where the issue was, what they heard and said it's best to go to the dealership to see what is wrong. They added air into my tires and sent me on my way, again free of charge I always come here now whenever I need any type of maintenance done to my car. These guys are honest, respectful and very nice. I don't feel nervous to ask them questions and I know that they definitely will not try to get your money out of you. I was at the end of my rope when I found out I needed a catalytic converter replaced. So, I hopped on Yelp, and did some investigating. Came here last weekend to do some car maintenance (oil change, transaxle fluid change, and tire rotations). There was already a bit of a wait when I arrived so I left my car there and was going to pick it up when they finished. To my surprise, they actually called me and told me that my car didn't need the transaxle fluid change nor the tire rotations, but that my car did need to replace the engine filter and air filter. I can't believe I'm giving five stars to a business where I've dropped over $1,000.00 in three visits, but I am. My dad owns a 2003 diesel Jetta. I was borrowing his vehicle while my left (clutch) foot was out of commission, and the window motor went out. Not a good thing, though the camo-colored tape we used to hold up the window made it almost ok. A friend of mine (and stylist! Check out my review of John Michael Salon) has a Jetta -- I knew enough to not take the car to the VW dealership, but didn't have a clue past that. Enter her recommendation of Great Hills Shell. $800 in parts later, and less than $100 in labor, and the window works great -- as does the car. The main belt was going out, and they were completely honest when letting me know about it. No pressure to replace -- just let me know how much longer I could expect it to last, and the cost it'd be to replace. I don't think they even charged me for labor to replace the belt, come to think of it. I've since taken the car in for an oil change (those suckers aren't cheap on diesels) -- it was $30 cheaper than the same service at the dealership, and they used synthetic oil. Score! Oh, and the cost of labor? $3.95. I shit you not. They also figured out why my brake light indicator kept turning on in my car (this was after attempting to have Town North Nissan help me, only to be hung up on TWICE. Jerks.), and only charged me for the brake fluid. Four bucks for my piece of mind. I LOVE this place. Their gas usually a few cents more than other gas stations, but holy cow, their service station is AWESOME. As an added bonus, the service manager, Brad, treats chicks more like his sister than some dumb broad who he can take for massive amounts of cash. And as added bonus number two, you get your car back as clean as you turned it in -- no mystery grease spots anywhere. read more

Shortly after getting settled in our new home we started having issues with one of our vehicles. Being new to town we found ourselves receiving an astronomical quote from the 'stealership' so a second (and possibly third) opinion was definitely needed. So, I was pleased when looking for a new maintenance place to see this come up rated so well. + it's a fairly short walk to work which is a bonus. Bob, the owner is a really nice guy. He'll explain everything to you and keep you totally apprised of the situation. They're not the cheapest, but they're my choice for auto repairs. I mentioned the "i found you on yelp" deal where you get a free oil change. My VW has an expensive oil filter and and oil so he did a 10% discount on the entire bill. Pros: - Open on Saturdays when so many other oil change spots around Austin are closed - Friendly service - Easy to find (Drive in via 183 or from Jollyville Rd via Hamilton) - Great location in the Arboretum (behind Randalls) - Fast service (It was only about 20-25 minutes for an oil change.) - They also check your fluids, tire pressures, etc... for oil changes. - Punch card so that every fifth oil change is free - Lots of customers - Free coffee and newspaper to read in the waiting area / convenience store part Cons: - Parking spots in front of the garage part may look sparse to first-time visitors but you can park in the grass and even in the area near the gas pumps. - Kind of expensive compared to my old oil change place ($39.38 for a Corolla but maybe the oil they used, 5W30, is better). Also, the punch card makes it cheaper. I'll bring my car here for future oil changes. Great Hills Shell is located at the Northwest intersection of 183 and Hamilton Rd. Talk about great service! I was about to buy a car and wanted a mechanic to look it over to confirm that it was indeed a sound and reliable vehicle. Shell quoted me $42 which seemed reasonable and told me they needed 30 to 45 min. I walked over to Randall's for a coffee and then a nail salon next door for a manicure. By the time I was finished with my manicure, the car was ready! They said the car was fantastic(which was such great news for me, after a awful prior car experience with a different dealership). The best part... They said bc it was such a new car in fantastic shape, they didn't have to do a full, deep diagnostic which meant that instead of 42$, they only charged me $29!!! So awesome! Great Hills Shell is my go to place for a quick oil-change without having to deal with sketchy mechanics. Oh and did I mention they are FAST, FRIENDLY and deal with walk-ins quickly as well? Usually I can just drop off my Nissan Altima for an oil change without a reservation and they'll be done in 30mins. Just walk in and they'll take care of it. I usually head over to the Starbucks inside Randalls to crank out some work while waiting and Great Hills Shell will call you when it's finished. Only downside is the price. Not the cheapest place in town ($35) but still somewhat competitive to other oil change places. The upside to their price is they have a customer loyalty punch card so for every 5 oil changes you get 1 free. If you look at it that way, it's not as bad. (Great deal for anyone using synthetic oil) read more

I called my usual shop, Austin Auto Techs, to see if they could fit me in today for a quick oil change and state inspection, but they were booked. So I hopped on Yelp and found Great Hills Shell down the block. What a find! I called them up and a friendly lady answered the phone and told me to come in any time today. So I showed up around 1:30 on a Tuesday, and I was worried it would take a long time since there were a bunch of other cars in the parking lot. The nice guy at the shop counter told me it'd be about an hour, but they were done 35 minutes later. They even snapped a plastic dash cover back on for me that I couldn't get to cooperate. At no point was I even asked if I wanted any additional services, he just printed out my receipt and told me to have a nice day. That's service. read more

I returned to Great Hills Shell for a brake repair. It's not what I wanted to spend my money on or how I waned to spend my afternoon off, but it needed to be done. I knew my car was in great hands. They gave me a quote for the brake repair and also let me know that my serpentine belt had some severe cracks in it and offered to replace it. Once they explained to me how important this belt was and that I could be stranded if it snapped (which likely would have happened soon), I decided to have it replaced as well. If it were some random place, I might think they were just trying to get money from me, but I trust these guys and really appreciated them saving me from possible near-future troubles. Once again, both Dale and Bob were extremely helpful and friendly. I'm 100% pleased with my service and repairs, and will continue to visit Great Hills Shell with any future concerns. read more

I go here for my Honda Civic oil changes and they are moderately fast, about 45 minutes in and out and there's a Planet K next door you can walk to to kill the time while they work. Their workers are super knowledgeable and don't try to force additional services which is great. Their cost for an oil change is a bit pricy butttttt they have punch card buy 4 or 5 and get the next one free so it evens it's self out so not too shabby. read more

This is my favorite place to go for oil changes. They're quick, conveniently located, and offer a rewards card which gets you a free oil change after so many paid visits. The service people have all been really nice. I recently ran over a plastic bag and was worried because I smelled burning residue under my car, and they immediately and graciously gave it a look for me. I do think that there are places that are less expensive, but I like the quality and treatment I receive at Great Hill Shell and I will continue to have my oil changed there. read more

Although the place seems dilapidated, forlorn, run down, and inconspicuously located, the service is top-notch, reliable, and speedy. I guess if I had to sum it up I'd say it's a "no-frills" type of experience. I didn't even intend to come here for an inspection initially; I simply got stuck on Research Blvd waiting to turn right onto Braker on my way to Arbor Car Wash for an inspection and thought "screw it, I'll check this place out instead." Man these guys are great! Everyone hates going to the auto repair shop; they take advantage of you and they overcharge. They tell you the Flux Capacitor is going out and you don't even have a DeLorean. Well, that is not the case at Great Hills Shell. I had gotten an estimate to do brake work from NTB and they told me my shocks and struts had to be done too. They quoted me $1200. I find Great Hills Shell thanks to Yelp and they say $400 and my shocks and struts are fine. Then, it is time to get my girlfriend's car inspected and she tells me the horn is not working. I check the fuses, that's not it, and take the car to Great Hills Shell. They tell me it was just unplugged and don't charge me for anything but the yearly inspection. Man these guys are great. Even though the dealer wants me to take it there and offer some free services, I still take it to these guys. I've also brought them used vehicles and had them go over them first before I buy them. Why? I completely trust Great Hills Shell. Bob (owner) and Nick (manager) tell me what needs fixing and what doesn't and what to look out for. I went to Great Hills Shell with a screw stuck in my tire. The guys took me immediately, explained the costs, & came back a few minutes later to tell me that the screw did not puncture the tire. I asked them what I owed them & they said "nothing." I begged them to let me pay them something & they refused. I was amazed. I'm a long-time DIY'er, but decided to let someone else take on the laundry list of repairs and maintenance on my 2001 Nissan Xterra, from A/C repair to brake job to transmission flush, when a friend recommended Great Hills Shell. Brad walked me through what repairs my truck actually needed, and what it didn't. Turns out my brakes were fine and wouldn't need replacing for some time. My coolant leak was simply a loose hose clamp, which he tightened and did not charge for. He carefully explained each repair he planned to take on, how much it would cost, and his history with similar repairs on similar vehicles. I gave him the go-ahead to make all repairs, and he had me back in my truck the next day. I communication was superb, and service was timely and reasonably priced. They warranty their work as well, which is a big plus. I may just have to hang up my DIY hat and let them work on my vehicles from here on out. read more

Never have I ever had such a pleasant experience at a repair shop! I attempted to change my own brake pads and although things would have gone smoothly, I broke a bolt on my brakes. My car was out of commission because it was dangerous to drive. I called up first thing in the morning and not only were they able to fix the issue, they put me through to the tow service and got me set up. Everyone was so friendly and helpful! I've been going here since ... sometime around 2001. From my first visit (it was Great Hills Texaco at that time) to my visit this past Monday, July 2014, I've always had a great experience. Unlike other places, I haven't had any issue with them trying to recommend unnecessary work or upsell. Nice and professional. They are the most trustworthy car-care folks I've ever dealt with, which is why I keep coming back. (I've had experiences at some other places and been burned.) And their prices have been competitive. This last visit, I had a somewhat unusual situation where the seemingly simple parts were frightfully expensive. They gave me quote for a full repair. I asked about alternatives. They told me how they could fix up the problem so it wouldn't escalate but would remain just a cosmetic issue, and an unseen one at that since it's on the underside of the car. I was happy to choose that option. They did it... and really surprised me when they gave me the itemized bill... no charge! Blew my mind. They were pretty busy and it wasn't particularly quick, but I was pleased with the experience and the outcome and will be going back. read more
