My truck lost accelerating power on the freeway! I put on my flashers and "coasted" into this Shell Station at 10:45AM--not realizing it was a TRUE "service station" with certified mechanics! Bob greeted a frazzled me with a kind mannerism that put me at ease. He told me they would look at it asap. I got a call 90 minutes later spelling out the repairs that needed to be made, and he hoped that I could have it the SAME afternoon! They even offered me a ride to work, but I opted for a Lyft so they could keep working. My Lyft driver said that he picks up many riders from this Shell, and that folks come from far away to this shop and they are very satisfied customers--and that I was in good hands! I was on my way to work when my tire blew out and lost pressure very rapidly. I pulled off the highway and stopped here with what my car started ready as 1psi when I pulled in. They had me out in 20 minutes! I was sure the tire wouldn't be savable but they managed! These guys are life savers! Great customer service as well. Went today for an oil change after getting the run around at Wally World (they stated a two hour wait time with only 2 cars ahead of me, WTH?). Spoke with Bob on the phone and in person. Very friendly person. Was in and out in 30 minutes and it cost me $31 and some change. That's pretty quick. Needed a state inspection and was trying to early vote in the Randall's around the corner. Tried the little place next door but they were booked up for the day. Right beside them I find Great Hills Shell and thought I'd try them. What a stroke of luck! Walked in and was immediately greeted. Walked to the back 'service' looking window in the rear but the guy who greeted me asked if he could help. Told him I needed an inspection and he said he could help me. I asked how long it would take and he said would half an hour be ok? Yes. Yes it would. Cruise over to Randy's and get my early vote on. Walk to the other side of the store and got my flu shot. Walked out and picked up my car. No hassles, no waiting, just done. And really friendly to boot. Last but oh so not least. They put the sticker on straight! I've been taking my cars here for over 8 years for oil changes as well as various repairs. The service managers Bob & Brad are great to work with, and they're a very honest shop. My favorite story is when I got a used car and asked them to check it out. Not knowing its history, they expected based on it having nearly 90k miles that it was probably time for a tune-up, new spark plugs, etc. Later in the day they called me to let me know that there was a sticker they couldn't see until they started working on it that said this work had been done at 60k miles. They just charged me a bit for the labor, and saved me several hundred dollars in unnecessary maintenance! read more

The only thing - I did not feel any special approach and recommendations regarding my car which didn't pass inspection at first - it seemed they were trying to deal with multiple cars at a time and were not very interested in any particular one. read more

My tire was flat. After their inspection there were no obvious damage to the tire. The suggestion is to change the tire. And they are very polite and helpful. They did not change any for the checkup. read more

A+! Based on other reviewers' comments, I decided to give Great Hills Shell a try for repairs on our 5+ year old SUV. We are new to Austin and had no clue as to who to try for service. Bob and his team are amazing. They are polite and engaging. They took the time to explain clearly everything that they found, and to describe all my options, including detailed costs and risks/benefits of each option. At no time did I feel pressure to select a more expensive alternative. The parts warranty is a great feature too. The SUV has been running really well since the work was done. If I didn't know better, I would say it has a bit more "swagger" on the road. These guys are now my go to team for all our cars. read more

I found this place, quite by accident, shortly after arriving in Austin. They've been my mechanics ever since. I bring my car in for something specific, say a state inspection and an oil change, and they let me know what else the car needs and how much it will cost ... minus the high-pressure sales pitch. If it's really crucial, I'll have the other stuff fixed the same day. If it's not, and especially if I need time to save up for the repair, I bring the car back for the additional work. I really trust these guys. If they say my car needs something, I believe them. I never think that they're just trying to get more money out of me. On both occasaions they were super friendly, fast, fair priced, and didn't try to push any unneeded services - even when prompted. Hard to call it 5 stars now. Their test drive during a road trip check missed busted rear hub bearings and a shot rear differential. The sound was pretty noticeable from driving it, and the transmission shop said a mechanic definitely should have noticed it during a test drive. The service they DID do was good and at a solid price, but I'm a little concerned that their test drive missed it. I'll give them credit for owning up to the oversight when I took it back in considering that they said the amount and type of work was beyond the scope of what they can handle, however. I'd say that if you know your car is fine and only needs tune ups or a cursory check, it's a good place to go. If you think there might be something substantial...maybe you should take it to a more "heavy duty" shop. read more

I did not have a terrible experience, but I definitely won't be going back. If your car calls for synthetic blend oil (including all GMC/Chevy/Cadillac models 2011 & newer), I hope this helps: I took my 13 Malibu in for an oil change. I recently bought the car, and I didn't realize it called for a synthetic blend oil (obviously, my own fault). I dropped my car off and was told it would be done in an hour, and that they would call me when it was finished, so I went to run some errands. I came back 2 hours later, and it still wasn't finished. Then I got the bill for $80, which sounded high, even for synthetic blend. Turns out the Chevy & Cadillac dealerships down the street will do the synthetic blend oil change, tire rotation, and visual inspection for $40. Like I said, not the worst experience ever, but I'm not paying 2x the price for oil changes. read more

Got a flat tire last week & pulled in this gas station & surprisingly it was also a automotive repair center! I was clueless of where to go & as I looked around one of the guys who worked there approached me & asked if he can help. He directed me to the building where you go ask for a service. They got to it & I was out in about 10 minutes! No scams, no stories, they did point out my tires needed to be replaced soon but that was about it. Came back for an oil changed a week later & got a punch card for oil changes, buy 4 get the 5th one free!! read more

This was the third place I brought my car to figure out a noise that it was making. The first two places were trying to charge $1200 for a repair that Great Hills Shell was going to charge me ~ $350 less for. Upon bringing my car in they told me that repair wasn't needed at all and determined the noise came from something that was loose and was able to fix it for free. They also found a leak that the other two places did not mention. Definitely very honest and trustworthy and will be the place I bring my car to whenever I have any issues in the future. read more

I came in for my second vehicle inspection with this location. The mechanic recognized me, and was very friendly and polite. There was a problem they noticed before they even started the inspection (due to prior mechanical work) and they fixed it on the spot in less than half an hour. Last year, my inspection was done within 10 minutes. This location is a bit hard to find. If you're coming north on 183 you need to take the Brake exit and U-turn under 183, then they're immediately on the other side of an aquatic building that almost completely hides the little gas station. The garage is on the back side of the gas station. I drove 45 minutes past downtown Austin to do my inspection here again, and I'll be changing to doing most of my oil changes here too when I have time to make the trip. read more
