Nice run of the mill American diner. Lots more seating than I imagined while driving by. Seems like a great spot to take the family. I got country fried steak and eggs. Everything tasted pretty good, and the gravy had lots of meat chunks in it. Unfortunately I'm lactose intolerant and didn't think about how it was probably made with milk or cream so my guts paid for it the rest of the night lol. A lot of food tastes like pre-packaged meals. Maybe they cook some things ahead of time for reheating when a customer orders. I think it might help this restaurant to have a specialty. Maybe a dish that really puts it on the map. The wait staff seem to be inexperienced. When my order was not delivered as I ordered, she did not offer to correct the order. The ambiance is nice. Love that there are old school diners still around Seattle. Fun place for family and friends grabbing breakfast, lunch or dinner! I came for breakfast. I was feeling for some waffles and a usual side of classic must-haves: eggs and sausages. I decided on the waffle breakfast combo. Waffle was buttery, delicious. Just wish they had more berries than just strawberries. Eggs were scrambled to perfection. Sausages were well cooked and an excellent savory bit to my dish. My sister ordered the veggie omelette and it was HUGE! She enjoyed the amount of fresh vegetables that were in the skillet, cheesiness and fulfilling portion. This is by far my favorite restaurant in the area. They have the most variety of foods from Asian, American, Indian, Italian, Steaks, etc and everything is always SO flavorful, and made from scratch. I have never been disappointed with anything I have tried and ordered. The service here is equally as wonderful. Their servers are amazing people, kind, friendly and always helpful with anything you need. The diner has TVs inside usually playing local sports games if they are on, and they have karaoke Friday night for locals. All around I can't say enough good things about this place! read more

I'm visiting friends in Seattle for the holiday weekend. We were looking for a place in their hood that was open for breakfast on Thanksgiving and American Diner was. It has a pleasant ambiance and our server was friendly and efficient. The food, though, mehhhh....I got the veggie scramble and it had absolutely zero flavor, totally bland. I had to add a lot of hot sauce and ketchup to make it edible. The biscuit had a nice texture, but looked like they had toasted it and tried to make it look buttered. No butter on the table and no butter flavor. With jam added, it was decent. My friend lives in Seattle and goes here often, but as he said, "it's filling and available." This was his response every time I said it was pretty good, trying to be polite. That should tell you something. read more

Went here for lunch because I've lived in West Seattle for several years but have never been in. Ordered the 1/2 sandwich (Reuben) and soup (turkey vegetable) combo and it was not good. Sunny Sundays in Seattle are mystical unicorns. I'd heard about them, but they're so few and far between, I forget what they're like until I wake up to one and almost stop breathing from the pure joy and delight they bring with 'em. In West Seattle, far removed from cruise ships and (welcome but crowding) crowds of tourists, the local yokels wander the streets and enjoy seeing friends old and new. This was my third day living in the Alaska Junction neighborhood, and after 23 years in the city, I think this ranks as one of the bet. The Farmers' Market, humans on their dogs' leashes, and even running into someone from my hometown (Lewistown, Montana) started this day perfectly for me. Now at the end of it, I stopped at the Great American Diner for a half-pound, grilled-to-medium Mushroom Swiss burger with battered fries. Holy Moo. Probably the best burger I've had in a diner in a long time. Fresh ground beef, a chewy bun from Macrina Bakery, and real Swiss and real sautéed shrooms. For $14.49. I forgot to take a photo of the burger and fries, but I did get the receipt. A couple of reasons: I want you to see how you can eat well in a popular neighborhood in friendly, diner ambience for a sawbuck. The second reason is just as important to me as the first: cleanliness and service. When I walked in, Coco was cleaning behind the bar. He did that for the entire hour I was here. The floor, bar surface, everything was immaculate. Maybe he owns the place; he certainly treats it and his customers like he does. So when you're here (because you should come here), look for Coco. He's attentive, but not overly solicitous. Polite, welcoming and gets the order right. Cleanliness: check. Food Quality: check. Great Service: CHECK. I'll be back: Check-check-check. About a month ago, I had an experience at the Issaquah location that I will describe as less than impressive. I spoke with the owner and he apologized and encouraged me to return. I don't know if he owns both locations, but I had business in the area, so I decided to give this location a try. I felt like I had been here before. I thought this was the Jaks location, but I looked up Jaks and they are further up the road, so I'll just assume the layout is similar, unless this was Jaks and they upgrade to a storefront more central to the retail area. Service was friendly and fast, much improved from my last encounter. I had the exact same order as I had before. The food was good and I only have one knock. I know hashbrown can take some time to cook, mine looked amazing, but it was clear they had been in the griddle for some time, they were both chewy and too crisp in some places. This is an issue I might normally overlook, but you can't fix what you don't know. Personally, I thought Issaquah does a better job of food preparation and had the service not been regrettable, I'm certain it would have been a 5-star encounter. I love hashbrowns and they are only memorable when they are cooked golden brown, hot and crisp. That was not today experienced, but I'd still recommend this place. I really liked the Great American Diner. I recently went there for dinner with my wife and a friend, and we all enjoyed it. The service by the staff was good and they were very friendly. We loved the vibe of the restaurant. It has a very 50s retro diner/classical diner casual vibe. The menu has a lot of options. I had the veggie burger, and the blackened chicken quesadilla minus the chicken as I am vegetarian. It was really good. The veggie burger was very tasty and cooked well. The quesadilla was also delicious. My wife and friend had the Caesar salad and the spinach salad. They both liked them and enjoyed them. For dessert, I had the whiskey bread pudding and it was PHENOMENAL! A very good dessert! Overall, I recommend The Great American Diner and we will be visiting again. read more

My grandkids go here every week, they live near it so it is a go to place for a great meal. They're favorite meal is the waffle breakfast. Servers were kind, food was pretty good. However I won't be coming back any time soon for a few smaller reasons-mostly seemed like a lot of cutting corners. The coffee was cold. My partner asked for a hotter cup and they said all the coffee was cold. However they of course were happy to brew fresh. They don't have any meatless breakfast meats. In Seattle that was a little surprising! They did have a veggie burger-but only like two other meatless options without having to make accommodations. You won't starve if you don't eat meat, I am just used to most places in Seattle having options. Limited beers on tap, and no tap list on the menu. The server was happy to list the beers but had them on a hand written note that was hard to read. Which isn't something the server did wrong, seems like something management should have put on the menu. Kind of random, but the hand soap in the bathroom was really watered down? And this is just my taste, but I found the ambiance off-putting (lots of American flags lol). I've been here multiple times over the years and it's been swell - good food, excellent service (especially Morgan and Ryan) but my boyfriend and I came in for brunch and were shocked to see another employee (potentially Ray?) talking down to one of our favorite servers, Ryan, eventually escalating and pointing a paring knife at him. It was very uncouth, and left a bad taste in our mouths, despite the good food. This sucks in a place we actually like coming to in our neighborhood and have recommended to others. The first thing that should be stated is that I simply love prime rib, and it remains my favorite meal of choice. After two "just fair" visits to Great American Diner over the past few years, I saw that prime rib was on the menu at a very reasonable price. I decided to give it a try. The prime rib was a disappointment. It lacked any marbling and had zero flavor. I was also disappointed that a horseradish sauce was not available that would have at least kicked up the flavor. Only straight horseradish, and au jus were available. The au jus was actually quite good, even though I am not an au jus fan. I do need to state that the prime rib was a perfect medium rare as requested. The sautéed vegetables served were inedible. I have stated several times that you can never have enough garlic. Well...you can have too much garlic. Wow. A ridiculous amount of garlic masked any flavor of the vegetables. The baked potato was the best offering on the plate. It was loaded and tasted great. Kaela was a very pleasant server who had excellent timing and was there when ever needed. Kaela also recommended a nice red blend from Washington, Sauce. Very tasty. The atmosphere and vibe just isn't there. The restaurant had 3-5 tables during my visit, but the bar has a regular following of customers that know the employees well. I did hear, often too clearly, one customer, possibly an employee, continually talk loudly about the restaurant and the scheduling etc. This conversation may have been muted if there was some music playing. They also have 3 huge tv screens above the bar...one showing MSNC, one Fox, and one UFC. Really? UFC? I can see why so few people were dining in the restaurant. I am surprised by the 4 rating on Yelp, as I just have not had positive visits. The server did tell me that breakfast and lunch are the main segments of the business. read more

Me and my fiancé and future mother-in-law went to this awesome restaurant on the 4th of July! We immediately were seated didn't have to wait for a table at all. Small restaurant, but cozy.l! We were taken care of by our awesome waitress. Diane, who brought us our drinks and took our order. My fiancé and his mom both ordered omelettes with certain things added, and removed from a traditional omelette. I had the grilled ham and cheese with a side salad. After about 20 minutes, we started to wonder what was going on. Was it crowded... No, but there were a lot of people in the restaurant. Come to find out that there were actually five tables ahead of us that still hadn't got their food and they were in front of us. Our awesome waitress Diane kept our drinks refilled and she could start to see that we were getting a little aggravated... Or Hangry!!! Our food arrives and unfortunately my fiancé and his mom's omelettes we're not correct. She just shakes her head and said "Yep I thought that was gonna happen. my sandwich came out perfect so my fiancé said, "please eat, your sugar is tanking and you need to eat" I ate my sandwich and it was delicious! The side salad was wonderful to... Very cold and crisp with lots of dressing and cheddar cheese. The omelettes came to the table and they were huge and my fiancé said his omelette was really good, his mom said her omelette was really good as well! We met the owner Glenn, and he is absolutely amazing, so friendly, so kind, and he actually took a little money off the bill for the omelettes coming out wrong ! Owner is super great. I still want to try this place out in person despite my last experience, but I'm constantly ordering takeout. Was craving late night breakfast and ended up ordering the biscuits and gravy combo and a burger. I was pleasantly surprised by the burger although I wish the meat wasn't as dried out (even though it was still pink inside, which I like). And the fries were my fave plus they have bomb ranch here. The ranch isn't available on the online menu but I called ahead and put in a note on my order and the wonder reassured me he would make sure it was included at no extra cost! And it was! As a couple other people have mentioned, the gravy for the biscuits and gravy was NOT my jam... and after my 2nd order I think I know why. They make clam chowder in Fridays. I placed my second order on a Friday night. I got the pot roast this time with garlic mash and steamed veg. This was also FIRE. That is until I found a piece of notebook paper in my food... With notes on it lol. And not like a tiny piece lol. It a was decent sized chunk. I can't help but wonder how that was even possible. And then started wondering how organized/clean the kitchen is... Alas, the meat from the roast was actually super tender and moist and the gravy was bomb. Speaking of gravy, I asked for an extra side of gravy for my potatoes, and instead of giving me the gravy that was on the meat, they gave me the gravy for the biscuits and gravy... lol. Now this was how I found out they seem to use the same base for their clam chowder as they do for the gravy they use for the biscuits Because between the side of "gravy" they gave me and the clam chowder, the only difference I could see/taste/smell was that the gravy had some type of sausage and chowder had, well, clams. which is... an interesting choice to say the least, but to each their own! The rest of the food was great and service seems amazing. The chunk of notebook did ruin my appetite not gonna lie. We went during Summer Fest yesterday. I should've known something was up when it was empty. We were the only ones there. My cup had food stuck to it. Things happen. Food took at least 40 minutes to come out- probably more. We only ordered 2 burgers + 1 chicken sandwich. Food was not worth $20/ plate. Chicken breast was dry and tough. Burgers were cold.
