Egg tart, char siu pineapple bun, egg custard pineapple bun
Lily L.

Seriously one of the best to go places for pineapple buns in queens I have been to. The service is very quick being that everything is ready premade but that doesn't mean that the breads are not fresh. They all come out nice and warm! I always come for the char siu pineapple buns because not only is the crust perfectly nice and crispy from the pineapple bun but the bread is also perfectly nice and soft. There is a good amount of meat in the middle that is perfectly savory which goes nicely with the sweet crust. The egg tarts were also great, like your standard bakery egg tarts. If you're looking for something sweet, the egg custard bun is also a good staple. The crispy/ soft pineapple bun exterior is still the same but it is just paired with a sweet creamy eggy interior. Definitely one of my go to places to pick up something quick and filling! (The prices are also hard to beat)

A brand new 2nd location for great roast pork buns, by Grandpa Chen! B1G1. Buy one get one free, until January 12. Best time to get some is when they come right out of the oven, piping hot. Yum! They are made throughout the day. My favorite here is the roast pork bun with pineapple crust. Made well at this location, they are a nice golden color. Not dark brown like some other locations. They now have so much more old school pastry items to choose from. Sachima, a noodle shaped pastry dessert covered in a honey sweet glaze. One of my childhood favorites. Wife cakes. These could be better if thicker and a bit more fragrant. Didn't seem to have the right mouth feel. Old school, red bean with egg yolk. Crust was a bit too hard particularly on the bottom, and filling was too sweet. Savory steamed white buns like chicken or Big bun, are located in the refrigerated section. Their newest creation is a ube bun. Haven't tried it yet. Service. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Seating. A couple of small tables and a few high stools at the counter around the window. Most people do takeout.

Grandpa Chen snuck in here unnoticed so I want to give a shout-out to Lillian for posting her review in time to make me aware of their grand opening BOGO promotion. I rarely get to take advantage of those things so it was much appreciated it. There are a couple of things at play here that makes me give Grandpa such a high rating. Their buns, especially the pineapple roast pork one are pretty sizeable with a generous amount of filling. I found the ones I had crispy outside, fluffy interior with all that juicy pork. These kept in the fridge and reheated the next day very nicely as well. I tried a piece of the pineapple cake - which is quite dense all around that it is nearly candy like in its structure, but thankfully not overly sweet. The 2nd is I am very happy they opened at this location - it is close by to me making it convenient and it joins other pretty solid choices on this couple of block on Kissena. I am happy to see their menu has expanded since they first opened out in Douglaston so they seem to be expanding to a full fledged bakery. I am looking forward to trying their other items.

Saw Lillian L's review and I've been to the first location, which I liked, so I knew I had to come here. Right by Queens College so more convenient of a location for me since I can walk here from work. There's residential parking with a few metered parking around the block. They were bustling when I went in, with shelves stocked full and fresh buns coming out the kitchen. There are some counter seating by the window and a table. They are very friendly and very helpful. I forgot my wallet coming here and I asked if I could pay with my phone, which I, thankfully, was able to. They speak Cantonese and English. Well sized buns for the price, especially with their opening special of BOGO for particular buns. I was full after 1 pineapple char siu (roast pork) bun. I opted to try the pineapple char siu bun and the regular char siu bun. The char siu is perfectly cooked and slightly sweet, matches the crisp and slightly sweet pineapple crust. They give a decent amount of char siu. I also picked up Fresh Pineapple Cakes and omg it was delicious. Don't be fooled by the seemingly small size. It's dense, as it should be! The Iced Milk Tea is nostalgically HK styled (I asked for no sugar). I do recommend at least a little sugar, if you haven't had this before. Same with the coffee, and coffee + milkt tea. I like how they don't put too much ice into the cup. I am so happy they opened a location here and hope it is here to stay!

I have been craving a pineapple pork bun for weeks and today was the day to get it. Came into the shop and was greeted by two friendly older ladies. I got one of each of the following, pineapple roast pork bun, Pork bun s d Snow crust roasted pork bun. All 3 were delicious, but i favored the pineapple roast pork bun for sure. The 1st bite into that warm, pillowy texture with the sweet and savory flavors coming through is so satisfying! I live very close and can walk here. There are a couple of tables by the window if you want to stay and eat, but it's more of a grab and go spot. I will definitely be back!

Just opened days ago. I went during their BOGO deal and took advantage of the promotion. Sadly, they got my order wrong and I only realized it after getting home. They did overcharge me for the higher priced buns, but not a big deal. As for the baked goods, they were quite good. Compared to their location in Little Neck, the bread for roast pork bun and pineapple roast pork bun were actually better. It was not over toasted or super gummy, and relatively airy. I hope they keep this consistency going forward unlike their sister store. Btw, lots of roast pork, not too fatty, but it needed just a bit more of sweetness to remind me of a traditional roast pork buns. On the other hand, the bread for the pineapple bun and pineapple bun w/ custard were very dense, not airy at all. Also, the egg tarts had a very dry crust that felt not as buttery as it should be. I really wish they can fix these problem because I'm looking for a good version of each of these pastries locally.

Egg tart
Ellen L.

Definitely best pineapple bun & egg tart in NY. $2.75 for a pineapple as big as my hand. The bun is a little chewy which is great, crispy outside. I reheated in oven at 350F for 10 minutes the next day, it's perfect like fresh made. It's not as sweet as other pasty store too The egg tarts reminds me the childhood memories when i had it in Hong Kong. Will definitely go back to try other items. But 5 stars for both pineapple bun & egg tarts.

Celebrating its second store opening here at Kissena, BOGO promotion up to 1/2/25. First store is at Northern Blvd. Arrived on a Sunday 1:30 pm. Parking can be a challenge in this neighborhood. Street meter parking or some residential area behind it. The store is small with two small tables and some high stools. It was crowded when I got there. They were baking nonstop due to the promotion. Bread was still fresh and warm when I got them. I especially recommend the chau yiu pineapple bun $2.95 ( regular prize). It's a good portion of roasted pork ( chau yiu ) inside. Regular Chiu yiu bun is $2.50 and pineapple bun is $2.50. Will definitely return.

Multiple hairs in a hot bun. Not cool

Just came back from getting some buns. I guess there is a reason why they have a B health rating. Hairs in the pineapple bun. Multiple. Never coming back here again

Da Bao (aka big bun)
Kat J.

Hand's down the best pineapple bun in all of Flushing. The skin is crispy while the bun itself is soft and delicious. I personally loved the general Tso's chicken bun, the filling was absolutely delicious without being overpowering. Conversely the da bao (aka big bun was underwhelming). All of the pastries were delicious, including the pineapple cake.

Read so much reviews and was also recommended so had to go and try. This location is near Horace Harding Expwy/LIE, across from Queens College. Buses nearby but we drove and street parking was available - meters and residential. Small but has a couple of tables and some stools/counter seating. It was late in the day but we still got some pineapple roast pork buns (I liked the filling here better than Mei Lai Wah in the city), baked RP bun, snow crusted RP bun (a new favorite bec I like the milky crust), red bean puff with salted egg yolk (reminded me of filipino hopia mongo but liked it more with the added salted yolk), pineapple bun with egg yolk (thinner custard-like filling, would like more of it though). Was mistakenly described to us as peanut bun at the store. Good thing my husband saw the combo for $5.95 - warmed pineapple butter bun (with a slab of butter) with iced HK tea for us. Yumm.

Jonathan T.

Traditional style char siu bao. The filling isn't so artificially red as others but the taste and juiciness is. The meat is authentic home style not restaurant style char siu. What does that mean? Basically the filling is similar to charsiu you can make at home. Prices are reasonable. 3 baos and one pineapple bao with a large coffee ran me $13.20. If I can find parking I'll be back.

Roast pork bun with no roast pork inside!

First time trying this place base on good reviews, ordered 4 roast pork buns and 2 pineapple buns but when got home and the first roast pork bun had no roast pork was just a plain bun, okay tried the second one, same thing. The 3rd and 4th had roast pork, so definitely disappointing to get roast pork in only 2 of the 4 roast pork buns and I saw the lady pull from same tray for all 4 roast pork buns, that is a 50% defect rate!

The service was amazing, very attentive, and everything was clean. The food was pretty good, but there were some dishes I liked more than others. Ordering the boiled chicken slices as an app was the wrong move. It tasted okay, as good as it sounds, but I don't think it was the best app option. The pork belly in mashed garlic was good, but I wish the cucumbers had been more chilled and fresh. I liked Uluh's version of this dish more. Next time I would try the boiled chicken in chili sauce or the crispy fish. The flavor and texture of the braised pork belly were amazing. The pork was tender and fatty. The prawns were fantastic and very garlicky, just how we like it! The rice was pretty good and actually had a decent amount of seafood, but I found the shrimp to be the same quality you would get from a takeout Chinese restaurant. The rice was also on the more steamed side, less on the dry side. All in all, I thought the food was decent, but the service was amazing and the vibes were also a plus.

I don't think I am a fan of the taichi beef though but that's more of a personal preference. The medium spicy though they warned me is spicy, is actually spicy. I got medium and I was having too great of a time. I had to take the l and go for the non-spicy mushroom soup base at the end. The service was exceptional. The best service I had in any hotpot place. Also, the servers don't feel a certain type of way helping customers they weren't assigned to unlike other places which I thought was great. I asked a lot dumb questions and they were great in answering all my questions. The restaurant was clean and nice. Everything smelled great because ofbthe hotpot. From what I saw, the restaurant is themed around a more village area in China. It reminded me of my village. Wonderful hotpot place overall. Would recommend 10/10.

We came around 3:30pm on a Saturday and had to wait nearly 2 hours for a table for 4 people. The wait time is also longer than they initially provide as it was only supposed to be 1 hour wait. If there is no wait time, then I would recommend. The service is amazing - the servers make sure everything is taken care of and they even tell you that if anything doesn't taste good, they can adjust or remove it for you. The food itself isn't that different compared to other spots, although I will say the food is very fresh. Our favorite items were probably the tai chi beef and the thick sliced tender beef. Both were tender and tasted good. There is a $1.95 charge for sauce station per person so make sure to use it. The interior will take you back to ancient China as it is very aesthetically pleasing. Worth it if there is no wait, but if there is a wait, I would go somewhere else.

We came with a big party of 12, and they were very accommodating, splitting the table and taking separate orders for three families. Let's just say each family ordered plenty. I only wish I'd snapped pictures of what the other families got. We started with the Lucky Six soup dumplings. They came out extremely quick, with just the right amount of broth, and the wrappers weren't so delicate that you had to worry about puncturing them pulling them out of the steamer basket. They held up well and tasted excellent. From there we ordered a whole bunch more. Think family-style portions, but more generous: - **Grandma's braised pork belly** - Super tender, with a flavorful sauce and quail eggs, not too salty. - **Spicy beef and tripe** - Served cold with very thin slices in a nice spicy sauce. It had a kick but wasn't overly hot. - **Peking duck** - We ordered a half duck, and it came with more than enough bao buns to build your own. A nice touch: since we were a big table, they also offered each of the 12 of us a complimentary ready-made Peking duck bun or soup dumpling, including the other two families. We all went with the duck buns, and they were excellent. - **Pan-fried noodles with pork, shrimp and fish** - The one miss. It was so saucy that the noodles were drenched and lost all their crispiness. - **Yang Chow fried rice** - Very nicely done, with big shrimp. These weren't the usual quarter-sized ones, more like half-dollar size. - **Soy sauce squid** - Cooked perfectly, not too salty and not overcooked to the point of being gummy. I also sampled from the other families' tables. Their dim sum dumplings were huge, and the honey roast chicken wings were excellent, crispy with a nice sweet glaze. For dessert, they brought us complimentary sweet soy milk soup with glutinous rice balls. It was sweet but not overly so, and it was awesome. One thing that was new to me: when the bills came, we could pay with Zelle, Venmo or cash. Great spot for a big group. I'd come back just for the pork belly, the duck buns and the soup dumplings.

I was at this Szechuan restaurant earlier in the evening with six others (thanks again, Andie),…read morewhere we sampled a good amount of their dishes. As mentioned, it's a pretty tiny space with one large table that fits 8 comfortably, though probably 9 could fit if needed. Otherwise, there were some smaller seating arrangements. The service was friendly and efficient when it came to taking out dishes and our ordering process. For the table, they gave us some lukewarm water, which was refilled frequently when required. They asked about the spice level, and our host went with medium, which worked, with some of us clarifying that "mala" is fine. In terms of flavors, most dishes had a nice numbing sensation from peppercorns and had plenty of heat, but not so much that it overpowered any one dish. The prices overall might be slightly higher than some other places, but they make up for it with their portion sizes and also by including rice with all entrees. Our only appetizer was the $11 Smashed Szechuan Cucumbers. The cucumbers were sliced into slightly large pieces, and there was a nice sauce that had both heat and a mild black vinegar flavor. I found the ginger a bit light, but overall, it was refreshing and tasty and worked well with some other dishes, which arrived soon afterward. My favorite of the main entrees was the Spicy Shrimp for $32, which was in a giant pot with a good 14 or so large shrimp inside, if not more. Along with the shrimp, there were also potatoes, peppers, scallions, onions, and lotus root slices. The dish reminded me a lot of Mala Xiang Guo/麻辣香鍋/Spicy Dry Pot, which is one of my favorite Szechuan dishes. The shrimp inside were prepared perfectly, while the potatoes were soft and the lotus root had a good crunch. I would recommend this highly. The other most expensive dish was the $40 Xu Chu Braised Chicken, which also arrived in a giant pot. The chicken could be ordered braised or fried, and we got the former. The meat was on the bone, as expected, and tender, with the pieces in a very red broth. This was tasty, with the sour pickled pepper adding a nice extra flavor, along with the typical mala from the non-pickled peppers and peppercorns. A more typical dish, though not in a typical presentation, was the tasty Cumin Beef, which was $30. In comparison to most other spots, the beef was cut into larger slices. Usually, I haven't liked this before, as the larger pieces of beef weren't tender, but that was not the case here. Otherwise, there was a mix of vegetables, including the standard onions along with large pieces of pepper, both green and red. If I had to make a complaint, I wish the onions were also sliced thinner, as they lacked a bit of cumin compared to the meat. Another more typical dish was the $20 Szechuan Bacon, which was their version of Hui Guo Rou/回鍋肉, or Double/Twice Cooked Pork Belly. The pork belly was tender with only a mild chew, and the scallions added a nice refreshing flavor. The heat was there, but I found the douchi/black bean flavor a bit light. I didn't mind this, though, as it made it a bit less salty than usual, and there was plenty of flavor otherwise. The last of the more unique dishes was the Crispy Pork Ribs for $24. The ribs were lightly fried and tender, but some others found them a tad salty. As with other dishes, this came with the usual mix of peppers and vegetables. Finally, the last typical dish was the $13 Mapo Tofu. The portion was a bit smaller than other spots, but that makes sense, as this was the cheapest of all the mains. There was some sourness and a bit of heat, with my only complaint being that I prefer a slightly firmer tofu in this dish for texture, but that's a regional quip. Outside my personal tofu preferences, the flavor was good. They gave us some Bingfen/Sichuan Ice Jelly/冰粉 as a complimentary dessert at the end, which was a nice touch. The ice jelly had a mild sweetness from the brown sugar syrup, and it was refreshing. The toppings included the typical hawthorn/haw flakes on top for sourness, golden raisins for sweetness, and peanuts for crunch. The dessert made a fine ending to our excellent meal. Overall, we had a very good meal here, and I look forward to going back. I wouldn't mind trying their pig trotters, or especially their fish, among other things. I can see why they're popular.

Crisp, flavorful and refreshingly delicious. ~ Xu Chu Braised Chicken ($40): this is a huge pot of chicken; the chicken can be ordered braised or fried. We ordered the braised, and it was delicious. Recommended! ~ Szechuan Bacon ($20): usually called Double Cooked Pork Belly in other restaurants. This was very good. It included lots of hot peppers and vegs. ~ Crispy Pork Ribs ($24): The fried pieces of pork ribs were perfection; albeit slightly greasy (it is fried, after all). This dish also included lots of hot pepper and vegs. ~ Mapo Tofu ($13): this was probably the most standard dish of the bunch. But still very good! ~ Cumin Beef ($30): most of the time, when I order this dish in other restaurants, it just includes the protein. This version had cumin Beef along with lots of hot peppers and vegs. Very good but the pieces of been were small pieces. ~ Spicy Shrimp ($32): this was a very generous portion of large shrimps (shell & head on). This huge pot was full of shrimp, hot peppers, potatoes, lotus root, and other spices. Recommended! ~ Rice (complimentary with each entree). ** They served everyone a complimentary refreshingly cool jelly dessert with Hawthorn flakes on top. This was the perfect way to end our spicy Szechuan dinner! The cool jellys cooled off your szechuan numbed mouth and the hawthorn flakes help with digestion. This was such a well thought out dessert!
