Went here for Christmas dinner with my boyfriend. Gracie's came highly recommended online so we thought we'd give it a try. 2 stars are purely for service (5star service, 0 Star food), food at Taco Bell would have been better. Our waitress was excellent and so was front of house, unfortunately the C team must have been working the kitchens since the A team probably got the holiday off. Started off dinner with the pumpkin soup, which was excellent. However when the main , lamb rack, came out things went downhill quickly. As you can see from the attached photo 2/3 of my meal was fat. I spent a good 35m trying to take fat off my lamb. I believed they forgot to fully French the lamb, and a huge layer of fat started off on top of the rack. From there it was layer after layer of fat with a mouthful of hard won lamb in between. My boyfriend got the prime rib, which was better, but again looking at the photo a good portion of that was fat. I don't know if it was because of the late dinner time, but it felt like no care was taken with selecting the pieces of meat nor was there quality control. Dessert was a bit more successful, or I was so hungry from the lack of an entree you could have given me wheatgrass juice and I would have thought that was excellent so got the sticky toffee pudding and devoured it as I was so hungry. I believe it was decent quality, but nothing special. My boyfriend got the pavlova. This was much less successful. The meringue was overly sweet and was piped on quite thickly. The blood orange custard was an artificial orange color and also overly sweet. If you've never had pavlova before or you're fond of super sweet desserts, this was passable. All in all, I was not impressed. At $75 per person you'd expect quality, but instead got meat that was lower quality than select grade meat at Walmart. We just spent $90 (+ 20% tip) a person for a Thanksgiving meal that was underwhelming. Three choices for the appetizer, the entree and the dessert. Much of the food that should have been served hot was cold. The food itself was average at best, with the exception of the desserts. Two of the three choices were excellent. The service was also mediocre. Even though there was only three choices our waitress was confused as to which salad was which, even though it was obvious. She took away one of our appetizers that we had planned on taking home. She never came to refill waters or to ask if we wanted another drink after our initial sparkling wine. I told her before the dessert was served that I wanted coffee with my dessert, but she did not bring me any. She must have realized that she forgot because she had someone bring me a cup, without cream or sugar after we had already paid the bill. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel deLuxe so it was convenient to come to breakfast here for the 3 mornings we were at the hotel. First morning there were only 4 tables being used but the server said they were "busy" and after running back and fourth in the restaurant and then looking at the computer screen decided he could fit us in. So bizarre! We had the eggs Benedict, very good. Second morning we brought the food to the room, the fresh berry crepes were ok, but it was like 90% blueberry. Third morning we eat in the restaurant not busy but "busy" according to the server but we got a table. I had the avocado toast, really great. Both times dining in we were never checked on, we had to flag the server down to get the bill. This place would be top notch if they improved on their service. read more

It's my first time here and unless someone else suggests coming, I'd probably forget it even exists. Walking in, it felt like there was potential. It's "fancy" looking. High ceilings, booths, mirrored wall... True, I was there for restaurant month and maybe they serve mediocre dishes for that but really? The "prawn" app was actually shrimp. There is a huge difference between prawn vs shrimp. Size, texture, flavor. It was offense they would serve shrimp and think people wouldn't notice. The braised beef cheecks we're salty but incredibly tender. They waited a while to bring it out so it was cold. The dessert, strawberry shortcake (I forget), was basically a glorified granola bar. Heres the worst part. I ordered a mocktail that I had to make up (I.e. they didnt have a menu so I told them what to put in it, so basically juice and carbonation). When the bill came why was the cocktail MORE EXPENSIVE than an actual cocktail WITH ALCOHOL? This place is like that dude you know what thinks he's way cooler than he really is. You know, that guy you'd walk over broken glass to avoid at a party. read more

The food is fine, but nothing special--certainly not worth the price. But the service is some of the worst I've ever experienced. Three of us went to lunch there; two of us got our meals and the waiter said the third would be a couple of minutes. We waited for 20 minutes for the third dish to arrive (seriously, I watched the time on my phone). That meant that by the time the final dish was served, our dishes were stone cold. Also, the waiter never came by to refill our waters and coffees, nor to apologize for the long delay. Not a place I'll ever be returning to. read more

I took my family here for holiday afternoon tea and had a lovely time. I was able to score a reservation by stalking OpenTable for last minute cancellations as they were all sold out through the month of December when I called many weeks in advance. I would have liked a better heads up from the website that this might happen, as the website only says you need to make a reservation two days in advance. Luckily, we were able to make it in. The gentleman that served us was wonderful, and the tea service was great. They were able to accommodate vegetarians with specific vegetable sandwiches that the omnivores didn't get. The scones were fantastic. There was a bit too much sweetness compared to savory in the service, but this is probably normal for tea. My only grudges are that the service, by design, is rushed. They start tea service reservations at 3 and everyone needs to be out by 5 when they start dinner service. The group of ladies next to us still had most of their food left when they commented that they were getting kicked out. The tea service is also pricey for what it is, but again, this is probably another thing normal across afternoon tea in general. I do wish there were other options for traditional afternoon tea service in Portland, but tea at Gracie's was a great option. read more

Since I moved to Pdx I've been eyeing this place on my bookmark list for a while, and finally had an excuse to go (brunch with the ladies, duh ) It's inside the hotel, and is gorgeous. The decor makes you feel like you are in the Palace Versailles, just beautiful. We were seated and orders mimosas and eggs Benedict and an omelette. Food came quickly, and looked amaziiiiiiing! We dug right in and honestly I can say this is one of the best benedicts I have tried. Soooo good!!!! We were stuffed and didn't have room for dessert, but did order the Rum cake. Profoundly mediocre. In a sense, it's the sort of food you would expect from a hotel restaurant. The selling point is a somewhat fancy dining room decor, but the food is absolutely not up to par with the rest of Portland's good restaurants. Take for example the pasta, which was some kind of boxed, over cooked spaghetti with what tasted like salsa (?) as the bolognese, with dense, dry meatballs. The duck--which should be rare, I agree, but this was undercooked flavorless meat, with a saccharine sauce of some kind. Chewy. Just wrong. The fish and chips looked like something from an airport kiosk. The positive thing I can say is the old fashioned was excellent. Also, I will concede, you have your grandma from Milwaukee visiting in Portland, she will *love* this place. Do not recommend. read more

Gracie's is a special spot in Portland! A friend/colleague and I try to do working breakfasts here whenever possible because it's comfy and elevated. Everyone there is lovely -- especially Hannah who is server extraordinaire. She sets a wonderfully welcome vibe, is conscientious in her service and offers great recommendations. Went to afternoon tea for a friends birthday. The setting was lovely. Great Art Deco hotel. Tea sandwiches, scones and desserts were good. Tea selection was adequate. However, as a connoisseur of tea, more black tea options would be nice. Also, when serving tea it is not optimal to keep the loose leaves in the pot past recommended steeping time. The tea becomes bitter. White teas being delicate only require 2-3 minutes maximum steeping time. My suggestion is to use tea bags, which can be removed after proper steeping time. We did feel the server was rushed in the presentation of the food. Overall an ok experience. Will we be back??? Probably just a one and done. read more

Maybe a weird thing to start off with, but this was so much better than I expected. The food was tasty, beautiful, fresh and appropriately seasoned. The menu wasn't boilerplate either with fun dishes like a muffuletta and lobster Benedict. The space is also beautiful in an early 20th century way without being too stuffy or pretentious. Terry, our server, was attentive and kind. But really it came down to the food being very good. Potatoes are that layered kind that reminds you of Thanksgiving. The lobster was yummy but perhaps more than that was the fresh chives accompanying it. Her avo toast was made all the better with fresh dill and perfectly toasted, thick-sliced wheat bread. The corn chowder is packed with chunks and flavor. I would come back just to have some soup. Fried Oyster Omelet has two huge fried oysters. I added Spinach to the omelet. It surpassed my expectations. Second visit I had the opportunity to come back and enjoy brunch. My experience was much better the second time around. The waiter wasn't very attentive and there were dirty dishes left on the table. The whole restaurant was full of people. The manager Kaitlin was doing a little bit of everything and you could see how hard she was working to accommodate everyone's needs. First visit The hostess shows us our table and we make a comment about the chairs being dirty and she walks away doesn't tell anyone & doesn't come back up to us. We use our napkins. All the chairs are dirty.. When we tried to get our servers attention to order more food- he always seemed to look away or bolt off. There were two other people in the entire restaurant. I took my fiancé here for her birthday dinner. It was fantastic! Nice quite setting. Exquisite atmosphere. Extremely hospitable staff. Delicious food and great music! My fiancé absolutely loved it! She wants me to take her there for our anniversary!! We started off with crab and shrimp crab cakes with a delicious pesto aioli sauce I think. I'm not sure but it was bomb!! I ordered filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes and the best steamed spinach I've ever had and my fiancé ordered the spaghetti and meatballs with a Caesar salad that was out of this world! My friend I tried Gracie's for the first time a couple nights ago, I think I can speak for both so us when I say the experience was wonderful. We tried tried the faux-tails, both were delicious. The star of the night was the appetizer, lobster mac and cheese. Oh my god. One of the best mac and cheese dubs I've ever had. So creamy and I'm still dreaming about it. Beautiful dining room; art deco design with sweeping long curtains on the windows, crown molding and gold leaf create a very elegant and sophisticate setting. The lobby of the hotel is decorated in a very similar fashion; high ceiling with mirrors and tons of art deco-themed books and photo essays. Charcuterie board was not good. I had much better. Forest mushroom was delicious. I came back the next day and ordered it again. La lavande was delicious. It's not the sweeter side for me but an average person would probably think it's perfect. Had a delicious hint of lavender in it which was to be expected. Driftwood sacera was very strong. That got me tipsy. I don't drink much. Arugula salad was delicious. It says it had prosciutto on it but I couldn't see any. I was initially wowed by Gracie's during a free event I attended, but I felt like I needed to wait and experience the venue for myself. So when the occasion arose, I threw on a cocktail dress, painted my nails, and glamorously stepped into yesteryear. The venue is both charming and enchanting, two words that I would use more often to describe a Disneyland ride rather than a hotel restaurant. The food, while spendy, is absolutely delicious - prepared by executive chef Chris Carriker formerly of 23 Hoyt. Because I had met him before, he was quick to come out and say hello to our group, which was a nice added touch. On my way out I snagged a brunch and lunch menu, both of which looked incredible. I have a feeling that this may turn into a 5-star review after I indulge in a Gulf Shrimp Frittata or a Brown Derby Cobb Salad. The food isn't all "frilly" but I would say that if you're not in the razzle-dazzle, pizzaz, evening of elegance mindset, skip it until the mood arises to pay homage to Hollywood's golden age. When it does, slip into your foxy dress and shiny pumps and indulge! UPDATE: 5/3/08 This morning for breakfast, prior to my big graduation speech, I knew I needed a fresh, delicious and filling breakfast. With the entire family in town, I initially struggled to find just the right venue that would be able to seat 6 people on a Saturday morning at 10:30am... My breakfast experience at Gracie's was so incredible that I am struggling to find the words to describe it! The venue was calm and relaxing, simply soaked in glamor and class. Gracie's, part of Hotel Deluxe, is a truly sumptuous experience: retro hollywood-esque charm, beautiful and elegant atmosphere, with photos of Hollywood stars in huge murals as you walk in. It's such a special experience. However, it's in Portland, and because of that, everyone sports casual attire, which I love. The service is generally attentive. The food is great! We've been several times now, including for Christmas Eve, Valentine's Day, and our Anniversary. Their menu is incredible! They had a special one for Christmas Eve. I had the crab and shrimp-stuffed salmon, which was perfectly cooked -- so tender and flavorful, served with arugula salad. It was divine. My partner had their prime rib special, which was also cooked to perfection, and my parents loved their steak. I am not a fan, however, of their rendition of a shrimp cocktail. They grill the shrimp and it's often dry. I prefer something fresh for a shrimp cocktail, especially in a classic-style restaurant. They have a nice-sized cocktail and wine menu, as well as non-alcoholic beverages, such as Steven Smith tea and excellent decaf (when your meal is done). Not much on the menu for vegans, but definitely one item for vegetarians. While their signature dessert, a ginger cake was rather dry, we were impressed by the dessert our server recommended, an espresso cheesecake. Wow! Was that good! They have a good-sized dessert menu. As mentioned, their atmosphere is classy, immaculate, and elegant. It's the perfect place to go when you want to cherish the evening, feel special, and attended to. :) Prices on their regular menu are moderate, and service, as mentioned, is generally attentive, efficient, and friendly. Tip: Valet parking is FREE when you eat at Gracie's. Bring your ticket and get it validated by the restaurant. read more

Where is this place? We wanted some where close and fast, we just got off the plane and couldn't check in to our airbnb yet so we had luggage. This place is actually located in the hotel across the street from a parking lot. The place looked very charming, like something out of a queen's museum. We came here for breakfast, so there wasn't a lot of other people. I ordered the egg benedict and a bloody mary. It was a Thursday morning and the guy thought I was an alky. (The bar was close) But he was able to make special accommodations, which was a big plus! The egg benedict with ham was delicious. But the best thing was the potatoes (which generally I'm not a fan of! THere were crispy parts and soft parts. It was good! I swear I took pics but somehow it got deleted on my phone! I went to Gracie's twice for the 3 for $25 in June and was truly blown away that this place doesn't get more accolades and has not been on my radar! The food, service and decadent ambiance is some of the best in Portland! The dining room is elegant, spacious with plenty of room between the tables to allow for intimate conversation and perfectly lit. I don't recall all the dishes I had but the sizzling wild mushroom appetizer dish was a stand out. I rarely eat dessert at a restaurant but since it was part of the package, I was able to try the icecream and the crispy bread pudding. Jeez, the icecream gives Salt and Straw a run for their money! Our server said that they make it in house and will soon be opening up a brick and mortar icecream shop! The crispy bread pudding was sinfully delicious as well. This review is specifically for Gracie's tea service. I was extremely disappointed in the afternoon tea. I love tea. When I heard The Heathman was no longer doing a traditional British service, I decided to try Gracie's. I was staying at the Hotel Deluxe for the weekend, and the hotel was beautiful with great service and a lovely bar. The tea was not up to the standard of the hotel. It is $40 for a single person, which is a lot. I would expect some innovative offerings for that price. The tea menu itself was limited with only 9 varieties. The entire savory selection was entirely made up of tea sandwiches on white bread. No tarts. No puffs. No particularly creative fillings. Cucumber, ham, chicken and salmon. Altogether, it was probably less than a whole sandwich. The scones were ok. A basic scone recipe. Again, nothing special. The deserts were nice, but by then, I had lost my enthusiasm for the event. Would I pay $20 for this meal? Sure. Maybe. It would still be overpriced. At $40, frankly, I feel cheated. The price was based on the good name of the hotel the tea was in. We paid $250 for 5 people (with tip), and if the price wasn't so offensive, the whole experience would be utterly forgettable. Next time I will not hesitate to try the Russian tea at The Heathman. Their menu looks amazing! And they charge $1 less. read more

Great for Portland Dining Month! Well worth $29 for 3 courses of delicious & filling food. FIRST COURSE We both got the Warm Escarole Salad -- pretty big portion imo, with chunks of pork belly & walnuts. I substituted the bleu cheese for parmesan & it was delicious. SECOND COURSE We also both got the Shrimp & Grits -- the fanciest shrimp & grits I've ever had! The grits were cheesy & tasty, and the serrano ham was a nice touch to the dish. THIRD COURSE - Bacon Wrapped Chicken -- the chicken was juicy, the bacon was delightfully soft & chewy, & omg... The shrimp étouffée... So good! This was a surprisingly filling dish. - Seared Scallops -- 2 juicy scallops served with melted leeks & baby potatoes. Sounds tasty huh? It was. To top off the meal, we also got the Creme Brûlée and Bread pudding. Both really delicious. I would recommend a cup of coffee to pair with the bread pudding. This review is a little overdue, but I worked with the people at Gracie's to plan my prom group's dinner a few years back, and they were FANTASTIC. Exceptional service. I had a group of 20 fabulously dressed people coming in. When I talked to the people at Gracie's on the phone a month prior, all they said was that they were going to make a prix fixe menu for us: a 3-course meal with a few options for each meal, coming in at $21 per person. That was the extent of my conversation. In retrospect, I probably should have clarified a few more things given the importance of the event (i.e. what the menu would be, how seating would work, etc), but my high school brain trusted it all to work out. So glad it did! We arrived at the Hotel DeLuxe that evening, and were promptly directed towards Gracie's. They had set up our group in their special separate dining room - a long table surrounded by mirrored walls, beautiful decor, very classy, and perfect for our group size. The menu consisted of the following (pardon the gaps in my memory): - Appetizer (Caesar salad or a soup) - Main Course (New York steak, a primavera pasta, chicken) - Dessert (Apple crisp a la mode or chocolate cake) With groups this large, service can sometimes be very frantic and disorganized. Not here - the service was excellent. Things I loved: 1) Prix fixe menu was a great deal. 2) It made it sooooo much easier for the group to pay at the end. 3) The food was DELICIOUS! 4) The venue was gorgeous - I wouldn't mind staying at the Hotel DeLuxe one day. 5) NO EXTRA CHARGE for all this extra work on Gracie's part. My husband and I came here originally for the Portland Dining Month but we ended up ordering off the regular menu. The Dining Month options sounded good but their menu is full of great picks. We ordered the Gorgonzola Cheesecake, Cheese Ravioli, Braised Lamb, and the Crab Grilled Cheese. A ton of food I know but we were happy with being able to try so much. The food was amazing with the Gorgonzola Cheesecake starter being the star of the show. The braised lamb was just as good. My husband liked his Crab Grilled Cheese and Ravioli, though I thought my picks were better. Not that his picks were bad. The ravioli had a really great sauce with poppy seeds. The sandwich had a substantial amount of crab too. Our server was great and very friendly. The food came out really quickly too. There are other things on the menu that looked good, so I would return. read more

I went with a few friends to try their Portland Dining Month menu. First off it's now become one of my favorites the room is huge and definitely more of a vintage fancy feeling like a classic Hollywood feel. Crowd isn't loud makes for an ambient dining experience. Our servers were very attentive and knowledgeable about the food and drinks. All the dishes came out beautifully and you can tell it involved a lot of time and effort to create such delicious master pieces. On to the food we all ordered different items so we can try a lot of the dishes they offered: Salads - we got 4 of the 5 salads and all of them used freshest veggies available and the dressings that complement each one is very refreshing. My favorite is the beet salad, thick slices of red and golden beets with a light ginger vinaigrette. Salads were pretty good sized would make a good lunch if paired with soup. Gorgonzola Cheesecake - it was our favorite 2nd course for the table. It came with a slice of seasoned gorgonzola with a cornmeal(i think) crust. The cheese came with an entire bulb of umami packed roasted garlic and delicious balsamic glazed veggies. Eating the cheese, garlic and veggies on the bread is like a flavorful explosion in your mouth. Very savory and delicious that leaves you wanting more. Sizzling Forest Mushrooms: Very tasty assortment of woody wild mushrooms. They were cooked perfectly nutty and savory great on toast with red wine. . Spicy Broccolini: Very tasty tender perfectly cooked broccolini with a hint of spicy kick very tasty and it's also offered on Driftwood Room's happy hour menu. Pancetta Wrapped Scallops: Very tasty sea scallops cooked just right with crispy pancetta wrapped around. They salty scallops work well with the mild leek and bean puree. 5 stars for ambiance and 4 stars for the meal, so I'm rounding up. We came here during March's Portland Monthly Dining for the $29 3-course meal. Let me start by saying this restaurant is gorgeous old-style Hollywood in a gorgeous old-style Hollywood hotel. Think linen tablecloths and chandeliers. Think suit jackets and ties and cocktail dresses and heels. I've been to the Hotel deLuxe for happy hour at their bar, the Driftwood Room but never had dinner at Gracie's. Finding the $29 deal meant having no excuse not to get dressed up and go, and so we called up our fanciest friends, put on our finest Audrey Hepburn-like attire and made a reservation..and Gracie's did not disappoint! Below is the 2-die-4 menu we got to choose from. We all tried to order something different so we could sample each others meals and we all agreed that everything was wonderful. This is not an event to miss. 11 months from now we will be doing this again and I recommend everyone does. Now, we just have to come back in the summer for their rooftop movie nights. I wish I could give Gracie's 4 1/2 stars. The restaurant is beautiful and the wait staff is top of the line. The food is really GOOD, but not spectacular. Everything they serve, is done very well, but it won't blow your mind. If you want a nice atmosphere, and "exactly what you would expect" breakfast food. This is your place! I recommend the Juevos Rancheros. Yummy meat with onions and beans served with corn tortillas on the side to make your own little tacos. read more

This place is wonderful. I found it on accident when looking for a nearby restaurant to the theater while my in-laws were visiting. I decided it was worth bringing my parents and grandmother to. I'm so glad I did. The restaurant is in a very well maintained and very classy hotel. The name escapes me at the moment. I love the style of the place and they not only have kept up the classy look, but the service as well. Our waitress was wonderful, came exactly when we were ready for things and never felt like we were waiting long or being rushed. The food was raved about by my whole family. Some of their favorites were the Gorgonzola cheesecake, the scallops, and the steak. Wonderful wine selection as well. This is a wonderful place to celebrate big events in large groups or intimate settings. They do high tea as well, but apparently the wait list is over a month for the holidays.
