    Thai Steak Tartare Tostada
    Aaron K.

Canard has such a cozy but casual bistro feel, while the staff were all warm and welcoming, including the chefs themselves, whom we had the privilege of engaging with since we sat at the counter, and I absolutely loved the interactions we had with them. Everything we ordered was gorgeous and whimsical in presentation, but of course that would mean little without the flavors to back it all up, which it had in spades. The Thai steak tartare tostadas were incredibly balanced, with brightness and herbaceous notes from the vegetables, herbs, and sauce, great punch from the Thai spices, richness from the tartare, and a nice snap and slight nuttiness from the tapioca crisps cradling everything underneath. The foie gras dumplings were simply divine. I expected them to be rich and dense, but they were like little pillows, with a savory filling and a perfect balance of smoked leek broth, crispy fried leeks, and a caramelized shallot jam that ended up being the surprise star of the dish for me. Then came the main event, the Duck Stack, which I can only describe as a McGriddle on steroids (in the best possible way!). Somehow it all worked beautifully, with the rich duck gravy, fluffy pancakes drenched in syrup, spiced onions, and a fried duck egg tying everything together in perfect harmony. It was one of those dishes that sounds wild on paper but is totally brilliant on the plate and in your mouth. Really fantastic meal from start to finish, and I'm already excited to come back to try more of the menu (and the happy hour!) on a future visit.

Always a good time revisiting this spot! There's a reason they now have three locations across the state. Their Steak Tartare and Steak Frites are some of the best I've had. Love the modern take on their dishes here. Desserts are always a must as well. The Sundae is always a good option!

Canard has been on my to try list and was finally got the motive to go since they participated in Dining Month! Made a reservation, so we were able to be seated quickly. The space itself is smaller and intimate, so bringing a larger group than about 4-5 people might not be ideal. The ambiance definitely gave Italy vibes, for sure. The chicken liver mousse was a good consistency, paired with the figs gave a nice balance between sweet and savory. The steak frites was a classic, steak was a good portion and cooked medium rare, but I'm sure if you wanted it more cooked through, you could make that request. The fries were definitely a standout, great texture and the garlic flavor gave a good contrast to the steak. My favorite dish was the dessert, the flaky crust gave a nice texture to the cream insides. I'm a huge passionfruit fan, so once I saw it was on the menu, I knew I had to try it. It didn't disappoint and I would definitely come back just for this dish alone. Overall a solid experience and would recommend people to try Canard out at least once!

Ugh, Canard is so good. I say ugh, because the food I want to order is so, so rich and my heart would be better off without it. I finally visited Canard after passing it by for years. We did the Portland Dining Month menu, opting for the tartare, steak frites and the paris Brest. The tartare - hands down, fantastic. I could have made a meal of just that alone. It was served with fried saltines, which were good, but very rich. I would have been very happy with some very plain flat bread crackers instead or just slices of baguette, but who am I to give notes? The second course for me was the steak frites. Mushroom sauce - amazing. The meat, perfectly executed. I love that I was not asked I how like my meat. It just came medium rare (I think?), tender and juicy. This should be the way - I always want the optimal preparation. Dessert, the passionfruit Paris-Brest, was so good. I would come back for this alone. All in all and excellent meal! Service was fantastic. I loved sitting at the kitchen counter and watching the chefs cook and plate the dishes. Definitely get a reservation as the space is small. I'd be back to try more of their menu and to check out their happy hour!

If you're looking for a cute, vibey date night spot in Portland, Canard is a fun choice. The space is intimate and dark. Here's what we tried: Steam Burger - This one can be skipped. It reminded me a lot of a White Castle burger. Not bad, just not memorable compared to everything else on the menu. Foie Gras Dumpling - Tasty flavor-wise with the sauce, but there was too much dumpling skin and not enough filling. Good, just not a standout. Dungeness crab crepe - Fun and flavorful! It's more like a soft taquito. The sauce was great but not a standout dish. Duck Pancake - Must order!! The pancake was so soft and fluffy -- the perfect vehicle for all the saucy, savory goodness on top. Everything came together beautifully. This was easily the best dish of the night. Duck Frites - The frites were crispy and well-seasoned (can't go wrong there). The duck itself very well-cooked. Ricotta Gnocchi - Such a pleasant surprise! Fried so it was crispy on the outside instead of the usual soft texture. Super satisfying and different in the best way.

Went here for date night and it exceeded my expectations. The interior is small but intimate and classy feeling. The servers were all friendly and helpful. All of the food we had was great and portions were just the right size.

Came to Canard in Portland to celebrate a birthday and overall had a solid experience with some real highs and a few misses. First off, the ambience is impeccable. The cozy bar area instantly reminded me of a reputable bouchon in Lyon. Very warm, intimate. We started with a dozen oysters, chicken liver mousse with crostini, and steak tartare. The oysters and mousse were enjoyable and well executed. The steak tartare had a nice texture, but the flavor leaned a bit too salty for my taste, like the flavors of the capers were very dominant. The crackers it came with also weren't the best vehicle; we found ourselves reaching for the crostini instead, which worked much better. We also tried the foie gras dumplings with tom kha broth. The flavors were good and well balanced, but the dumpling skin was on the harder side and a bit tough to chew. Really enjoyed the overall flavor, just wish the pasta dough had been more delicate. For mains, we tried the steamed burger, broccoli, duck, and steak frites. The steamed burger tasted like a mix between In-N-Out and White Castle...it's good, but nothing particularly memorable. The broccoli was a standout: loved the creamy miso sauce and the sweetness from the pears mixed in! one of my favorite dishes of the night. The duck was the star of the show ! It was tender, savory, and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, the steak frites didn't quite hit the mark for me. The steak was fairly chewy, and while the mushroom sauce was good, it was again a bit salty to my liking. I do wish they offered more classic sauces like Béarnaise or sauce au poivre. We ended with the soft serve topped with miso caramel and pineapple, which was excellent and a great way to finish the meal. They also have a nice selection of wine and non-alcoholic options. We tried the NA Riesling, and it genuinely smelled like its alcoholic counterparts. Service was accommodating and friendly overall but it did take a while between each course (pacing was a bit off), toward the end of the meal it felt a bit rushed, with frequent prompts to clear plates. All in all, Canard delivers great atmosphere and some standout dishes (especially the duck and broccoli). I'd happily return, just with a more selective ordering strategy next time. 3.5/5

Super service and great food to top it off! Canard delivers all the way- a must visit while in Portland. Going in I knew I was in for a treat, but the impeccable service is what made this place a worthwhile visit. We ordered a variety of fares and my best recommendation of them all is the Dungeness Crab Crepe. The steak frites was cooked to perfection and the foie gras dumplings is a must try. Canard is a solid choice

Came here for a birthday dinner with the fam... had a mostly nice time. Service was a bit slow, but it was hopping in there so it was okay. Toward the end of the night, the adjacent nightclub began thumping, and it was so loud and distracting that we actually skipped dessert and left. Kinda a tough problem, not Canard's fault but definitely Canard's issue. Would maybe return earlier in the evening and try it again!

Canard was participating in this month's Portland Dining Monthly. I'm glad we participated. The food Canard was both interesting and delicious. We especially enjoyed the chicken fried trout. Service was fast, friendly and efficient.

We finally got to eat at Canard Burnside for Portland Dining Month. I would highly recommend reservations since the space is on the smaller side. Everyone was delightful that we talked to, and all of our food was fantastic! Our mains were the Chicken Fried Trout and Duck Frites. Everything was cooked perfectly with tons of flavor! This place is nice and cozy so I would recommend this for a nice date night. I also loved all the duck decor they had around the restaurant! Do not forget dessert, specifically the Dulcey Mousse Paris-Brest.

Here foods are pretty good and condition is traditional American style, Relax and casual.

Reservation a must. Place very busy. Place in small side but not cramped. Staff where great and helpful. Food was pretty good. The only thing didn't like they fry the fish same oil as the fries.

    Ask the Community - Canard

Do they have beer on tap or is it all cans?

What type of mustard is served in the steam burgers? Yellow, brown, Dijon, etc.?

The same type you'd get at a White Castle. Just priced 4x more.

    Vaccination required to eat?

No, but you might need it after eating there. Plenty of better options in PDX.

    Do you offer vegan options?

    What is the dress code?

I dressed casually (lululemon leggings and a hoodie), and it was totally fine.

    Is dining during COVID outdoors?

    Both in and out

How hard is it to get a table for 7 at 9pm? Like what is the wait time estimate based on size of the restaurant and seating arrangements?

We have two larger tables that we can squeeze 7 folks at! At 9 pm we tend to be slower than any other point in the evening, although volume varies by day of the week. On a Monday, I wouldn’t predict any wait. On a Saturday, I would say a min of 30…

    When is happy hour?

Canard will have two happy hours, from 4 to 5 p.m. and again from 10 p.m. to midnight. During that time, expect half-off oysters and $5 aperitifs.

Does Canard have AC? Robust AC?

    Yes they have air conditioning

To speak about Teardrop Lounge, I should probably start with this:…read more Ladies and gentlemen, I present my favorite cocktail bar. Not the best -- I'm not arrogant enough to claim that. I haven't been to every cocktail bar in Portland, and saying something is the best usually says more about your lack of experience than your conviction. But favorite? That I can stand behind. And I want to get that out of the way early, because of the amount of praise I'm about to pour on this place -- fully earned, completely intentional. The biggest crime here is that I only discovered it two weeks ago, after living in Portland for a year. It had been recommended to me countless times, and I ignored it. A mistake. A painful one. But now that I've found it, I don't plan on making that mistake again. I'm not typically an Old Fashioned drinker. In fact, I usually hate them. But somewhere between curiosity and too many episodes of Mad Men, I decided to try one anyway -- fully expecting to confirm my bias. Instead, it completely flipped me. Bright, almost citrus-forward in a way that felt unusual but entirely intentional. Balanced, smooth, just enough burn to remind you what you're drinking without overwhelming it. It was the first time I actually understood the appeal. I'm pretty sure I grew a few chest hairs that night. That alone would've been impressive. But it didn't stop there. The space is beautiful -- clean, intentional, but not cold. The staff are excellent: personable, engaged, and most importantly, authentic. Not scripted, not performative. The kind of people you actually want to talk to, and hopefully, eventually be on a first-name basis with. Now, all of that gets it close to a perfect score. But what pushes it over the edge -- what makes this place stick -- is the White Russian. One of the first drinks I ever had. My dad's drink. Not because of The Big Lebowski -- that came later -- but because it's just always been his thing. And at some point, it became mine too. Typically, when bars try to "elevate" a White Russian, they ruin it. They overthink it. Swap ingredients, tweak ratios, add unnecessary flair. And more often than not, it ends in disappointment. Teardrop does the opposite. They respect it -- but refine it. The coffee liqueur actually tastes like coffee. The heavy cream is properly integrated, not just dumped on top. The vodka -- whatever they're using -- is clean, present, and perfectly measured. There's a subtle complexity to it without losing what makes the drink what it is. It's the best White Russian I've ever had. No hesitation. I've gone back twice just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It wasn't. If someone asked me what my death row drink would be -- this specific cocktail, from this specific bar, is in the conversation. Easily. Teardrop Lounge doesn't just make great cocktails. It reminds you why cocktails matter in the first place. And that's why it's my favorite.
