Back in the mid-to late-80's, the Good Earth first opened in the Galleria. Their original logo contained the words, "Since 1985" (or whatever the year was - I can't remember now), and we always used to laugh about how they were advertising that they'd been open for ONE WHOLE YEAR.
The logo doesn't contain those words anymore, but we wouldn't be laughing now, as the Good Earth has proven its staying power. Honestly, I was a little put off as a teenager in the 80's by the whole healthy-eating thing, but my palate and perhaps the Good Earth have evolved and found a very happy meeting ground with one another.
I live in Austin, TX, now, but my family still lives in the MSP area, so I'm there at least once a year. The Good Earth is often our go-to after we've spent several days over-indulging (which is what my family does when we're together) and need something delicious that won't make us feel like we've consumed a small village. I love their complimentary bread basket, particularly their fantastic flatbread, which I'm pretty sure is house-made. They serve it with a very nice hummus, but the flatbread is really wonderful with a thin layer of unsalted butter, which they'll bring if you request.
I often opt for a salad, and have tried their shrimp, avocado and grapefruit salad, which was light and refreshing and delicious. Last time I was there, I had a special salad with chicken, pear, and pecans that was topped with pomegranate seeds and served with a small hunk of brie on the side. Also wonderful, and I was very impressed with the quantities of the expensive ingredients - they did not skimp at all on the chicken or pecans. The dressing was a little short on flavor and high in oil, but the ingredients imparted enough flavor on their own that it worked out fine. My parents often get their three-for-$10 option, which is your choice of soup/salad, a smaller-sized entree (last time we were there, my mom got a seared ahi tuna that she said was excellent), and a small dessert. They have a number of other specials and options that seem very wallet-friendly, including 10 wines for $10/bottle on Monday nights.
I was a little surprised to see so many negative comments about the service, although I only go there once or twice a year, so perhaps I've just been lucky. I will say that last time we were there, the server gave us somebody else's bill, and if I were less attentive or a less honest person, I could've gotten away with paying quite a bit less than we actually owed (and I'm not sure what sort of hassle the person whose bill we received would've had to go through). But otherwise, the service has been perfectly reasonable, if not overtly friendly. And I'm delighted to have such a delicious, moderately-priced dining option that we can stumble into after indulging in that delightful Galleria shopping. read more
