I absolutely adored this place! As a relatively new vegan, I am still getting used to avoiding ingredients at restaurants, but this made it so easy for me! I was drawn in by the ambience of the place. It was very cute and urban, practically begging me to sit down. It's an order and pay first style, which took me so long, because everything on the menu looked so good! Due to a bit of confusion, we ended up changing our order multiple times, but our server calmly helped us through each step. I'd like to also take a moment to appreciate that they use no plastic in dishes and boxes too! It's so environmentally friendly! Although it's just slightly on the pricier side, I'd say it's pretty great for a completely plant-based restaurant. My family and I ordered a mac and cheese, Crunchwrap (with fries), chili, a bowl, buffalo cauliflower wings and a cookies and cream milkshake. The buffalo wings came first and they were amazing! They were perfectly sour and a bit of spicy. That really hit the spot! To cool my mouth down, I drank a bit of my milkshake, and I could not stop! The oat milk was so rich and creamy, giving it the perfect flavor and texture. The Crunchwrap had "meat" inside it that was so real I actually got scared! It was such an authentic taste. The chili came with vegan sour cream, and I'm not exaggerating when I tell you it was some of the best sour cream I've ever had! It also came with jalapeños which paired perfectly with the warm chili. Finally, the bowl was irresistible. It had crispy tofu on top that made my mouth water. After devouring my meal I ended with crispy French fries that crunched with every bite. One of the best meals I've ever had! I observed what appeared to be a significant difference in how Black and white patrons were treated during my visit. For my party, we were not informed that it was happy hour or that certain appetizers were discounted. However, I observed several white patrons being informed of the happy-hour specials by Troy. Similarly, white patrons were told they could choose between options such as fries, tots, or a salad. When it was our turn to order, we were only told that fries were an option and were not offered the other choices. We also decided to order dessert. At the time, the dinner rush had not yet started, and there was no line behind us when we placed our dessert order with Charles. Despite this, we waited approximately 10-15 minutes for two milkshakes. One member of my party eventually had to remind the cashier about our order. When the cashier asked, "What are you waiting on?" we explained that we were waiting for our two milkshakes. He responded, "Well, it's just the two of us here," referring to himself and the white female employee who was handling to-go and food orders. While we understand that employees may be managing multiple responsibilities, the concern was the difference in demeanor and level of attentiveness we experienced. The Black male cashier appeared visibly annoyed when we ordered dessert from the bakery area, while we observed him interacting with white patrons in a noticeably friendlier and more upbeat manner. We also observed another Black patron enter shortly afterward. He was the last person in a short line of approximately two or three people. He waited approximately 5-7 minutes before the cashier, who had stepped away, returned to acknowledge him. The other employee also did not acknowledge him while he waited patiently to order dessert. When the Black cashier returned, his demeanor again appeared noticeably irritated toward the patron's request. Taken together, these interactions left my party with the impression that Black patrons were not receiving the same level of information, attentiveness, or friendliness as white patrons. Whether intentional or not, the difference was noticeable and uncomfortable. Additionally, it would be helpful to clearly communicate to customers that gratuity is automatically added to the bill. Given the level of service we experienced and observed during our visit, this is something we would have wanted to know before ordering. Being located in the Rondo community makes this especially disappointing. All customers should be informed of available specials, choices, fees, and options, and every customer should receive the same level of courtesy and service regardless of race. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and reviews these interactions with the staff involved. I very rarely get to go to vegan restaurants since I'm not a city gal. So when I do it's major cause for excitement! This is all vegan food, and you order at the counter then find a seat and they serve you. I tried the chikn sandwich with chili and found it delicious! The chili was flavorful and the sandwich was large, I brought half home for later. Would definitely be a repeat customer if I lived in the area. They automatically charge you gratuity (if you eat in?), which I found a little odd. Maybe it's common locally but I don't enjoy being forced into things like that. I will start my review with the positive and that would be that the food was good. Now with that being said, let's talk about what was not good.....the customer service! I was visiting the area and so excited to find a dedicated plant based restaurant. I was dining with 2 other women, we walked in smiling, friendly and excited to be there. The young man ( Troy K.) behind the counter asked if we were ready to order and we said we needed a moment, He didn't offer any suggestions or assistance. When we were ready to place our order he seemed agitated as he took our order, any questions that we asked were answered dryly, there was no smile or polite courteousness, he acted as if we were a nuisance to him. After placing our order we sat to wait for our food; as we waited I noticed that all the Caucasian customers that walked in were greeted pleasantly as they walked up to the counter and were told that it was happy hour. Another customer came in, an African American man and he waited for a long time before someone finally acknowledged his presence, he also did not get a greeting, he was basically asked what he wanted and he placed his order. This happened every time. After our meal, we decided we wanted dessert, so we placed our dessert order and was met with the same attitude, this time we placed our order with Charles T. We inquired if the ice cream was made with nuts and was told very sarcastically that "you're asking me questions that I don't know the answers to" and he does not just know the ingredients to the ice cream. I found this to be very irresponsible as a nut allergy is very serious and can be life threatening. He did reluctantly look at the ice cream ingredients to confirm that it was not made with nuts. We waited an unusually long time (approximately 30 minutes) to get the 2 shakes that we ordered. We watched the caucasian patrons that came in after us get their shakes while we still waited for ours. Eventually we actually had to go back to the counter to check to see if we had been forgotten. He (Charles) informed us that he was taking other orders and would make the shakes when he has time. We spent approx $100.00 on food and an additional $30 for dessert, and to be treated like our money was not as good as the other patrons. It was very shocking to be treated this way as 3 African American women and by African American males (Troy & Charles). It was quite obvious the discrepancy in how they treated the Caucasian patrons versus the African American patrons. As I stated before, I was a visitor to St. Paul, MN however, one of the women that I was dining with is a St. Paul resident, she assured me that she would not be returning to this restaurant again. I'm not a vegan or vegetarian or pescatarian, but of my two friends one is pescatarian and the other is fully vegan. What I am in, however, is my healthy era so I was pumped to try this for dinner. My MN friend has been here with her local friend as well as had access to some items through her job at a sports venue. It's not a fancy sit-down place but also not fast food. It reminded me of Cava when I walked in the door. The bathrooms (2 single-stall) were very clean. You order via QR code menus that have built in pay systems too. My order kept not going through so I had to resort to approaching the counter. Food came out fairly quickly. The server got confused when they brought out an entree size Caesar Salad when I got the side. She came back afterwards & apologized for her mistake in a professional way. Simply stupendous! My husband and I came here for lunch on a Friday and found a very busy restaurant. I got the breakfast burger with fries and my husband got the chicken sandwich with a side of salad with vinaigrette, and we shared a chocolate shake. We also grabbed one of their coffee cakes to go for later. I had really wanted to try the chicken fried oyster mushrooms, but they were out by the time we arrived, sadly. The burger and sandwich were both very satisfying, and the fries were wonderfully seasoned (I think it might be Old Bay seasoning or something similar, it was definitely a familiar flavor) with a good crispy outside and a fluffy interior. Even my husband, who is not a potato fan, was stealing some fries! (Stealing a bit of his salad is not the same level of excitement, let me tell you, but it was a good vinaigrette and it was really fresh.) I didn't get a bite of husband's sandwich, but my burger was flavorful and filling. The chocolate shake was thick and delicious, as well. We had the coffee cake later (with coffee, naturally), and it was excellent and cinnamon-y, and even had some apple bits in it, which was a pleasant surprise. The location itself is pretty modern and clean. You order up front and then get your number and sit down somewhere. The service in general was pretty good, although it did take a little time for someone to come over to the cash register to take our order and he seemed a little annoyed, so I am not sure if we broke some unspoken rule or something known to the regulars with the way we approached. We do try to do a day in the twin cities each time we make a trip to Minnesota to see my husband's family, so we're almost certain to be back again on the next trip! They had cookies and brownies and peanut butter Rice Krispies, so many delicious options. My vegan friend brought me to J. Selby's for a quick bite to eat for lunch after a busy day of errands, and I loved it! This is such a cute gem, very vintage diner feel with revamped food. We definitely came in right after the Saturday lunch rush. I ordered the Harvest Bowl with Tofu and shared a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was delicious, a little more on the doughy side but I like it that way. The harvest bowl was delicious - I think about it constantly. Calling J. Selby a plant based eatery is a BIG JOKE!! I went there with some friends who are all plant based, to try this place out. The place wasn't that busy, yet the tables were dirty. We ordered some cauliflower wings at the cashier area and went to sit down at a dirty table that took the server some time to get it cleaned. The wings came out and they were greasy and tasted like the oil hadn't been changed in days. We told the server and got an attitude from her. The manager wasn't pleasant either after we asked her about some of the ingredients of the items on the menu. This so called plant based eatery is NOT a healthy food restaurant. The fake meats are made from wheat gluten mixed with some kind of juices and oils. None of this is plant based. The cauliflower is dipped in an all purpose flour batter and deep fried in processed oils which is NOT plant based. Deep fried potatoes in processed oils are not considered plant based, nor healthy. I know it's plant based but that's still pricey. The establishment is large and can be used to study or hangout at. Big enough to have a friend gathering. The Caesar salad with mushroom was alright but the dressing used gave me a headache after 4 bites. Maybe too much soy in it - not certain but it didn't agree with me. In fact, we switched to a meatless diet after trying their cauliflower wings and buffalo chicken wrap. The staff is always friendly and helpful if you have questions. They have a good amount of seating indoors and a few spots outside as well. The only downside is that there is no parking lot. We can usually find street parking pretty easily but you might have to walk a couple blocks so just prepare for that. If you are vegan or just want to try other meatless options definitely check out this spot! read more

This time around we dined in. We tried the nachos, steak sandwich, dirty double burger, chili, and the cookies & creme shake. Was expecting the restaurant to be noisier when dining in, but was pleasantly surprised that even during the dinner hour on a Wednesday around 6pm it wasn't bad at all. We could hear each other just fine, despite looking up to see it was a pretty full front of house. Nachos ($14) - 10/10 (maybe 11/10?!?) These were SO SO good. It's what regular, meat eater nachos WISH they were (and so rarely are.) These absolutely hit the spot. Were they a bit of a mess to eat? Yes, but absolutely worth it. They were so delicious we couldn't stop eating them and would definitely go here JUST for nachos. Plus between two people they were very filling (could be an entree unto itself) and we agreed that in future we cannot split nachos and also each get entrees because we were so full! (But it tasted so good along the way lol) Steak sandwich ($14) - 9/10 Partner had the steak sandwich and he said the only thing that would have made it better was more of the aioli, because when he got a lot of the horseradish aioli in a bite it was amazing. He said he would absolutely get this again, but ask for extra aioli next time. Dirty double burger ($17) - 10/10 Honestly, at this point I had heard about this burger from other people and despite my efforts to resist, my expectations were already set high. That said, the burger knocked it out of the park, even beyond my expectations. The secret sauce, the sweet pickles (which I usually disdain), the melty "cheddar cheese" - it all worked. It was everything you want in a juicy, messy, mouthwatering burger. Incredibly satisfying, every bite. $17 may sound steep compared to a faster burger option, but for a sit down restaurant I find that a beef burger runs between $14-20 anyway and doesn't even include a side sometimes. Chili (side) - 6/10 We're Midwesterners, we understand that there's chili competitions for a reason. There's so many options and so many spices, making every chili recipe unique. That said, we both agreed that the chili was a bit too cumin heavy for us. Upon bringing it home, my partner heated it up the next day with some added garlic salt and mango habanero hot sauce to a marked improvement. "Delicious" was the new description of choice. However, we likely won't order it as a side dish again. Cookies and creme milkshake ($8) - 10/10 Frankly, it is absurd how great this dairy free milkshake (oat based) is. I kid you not, we always try cookies and creme shakes. Everywhere we can. We try them at burger joints, ice cream stands, and now at a vegan restaurant. Something that My Burger and Shake Shack and all the others haven't mastered yet, has been honed to perfection at this vegan restaurant. A nice thick milkshake with actual cookie chunks in it that won't fit into the straw, the best problem to have. Why do these other places get away with using just cookie dust?! It's a shame they serve it with a (compostable) straw, because it's so thick you need a spoon (unless you want to wait for it to melt.) And it's not even the thickest option on the menu! I used to love this place. Haven't been in since Herbivorous Butcher took over, but it is NOT the same. Had the "dirty double" which is supposed to be the "dirty secret" replacement. It is not. Niece had the crispy chicken sandwich, which she's loved for years and she said she wouldn't order it again as it's nowhere near as good as it used to be. Don't get me wrong, everything is still good, but it used to be amazing. I moved out of MN and it was always my first stop when back in town. I'm not Vegan but I can't have much dairy. And I certainly can't have a traditional milkshake or malt. I have tried so many dairy free ice creams over the years, both from the grocery store and out and about. And none of them have satisfied. This was the best milkshake I've had in years and years. There were so many different varieties, all plant based. And the best part is that you honestly couldn't tell. It just tasted like a normal milkshake. It was the best ever. It saddens me to write this review, but we all need a reality check sometimes. J Selby's is an establishment that I have supported for a number of years. As a vegan, I was excited to try out this plant-based eatery nestled in the Rondo neighborhood of Saint Paul. Over the past few years, I have witnessed J Selby's decline in representation within the diversity of the staff, food quality, and overall customer service by much of the staff since they have been bought by Herbivorous Butcher. J Selby's used to feel like it was a PART of the community. Now it just feels like they are apart of the Rondo community. I can understand in this day and time we are living in how inflation pays a role in increased food pricing. I just don't respect how inflated prices including hidden fees and even charging extra if you place a take-out order sits well with already high food prices. Much of the staff seem out of place as if they don't live in Rondo or even Saint Paul, yet very Minnesotan. There is a pretentious and very passive aggressive energy as if many of the staff are doing you a favor in serving you. This place used to have a welcoming vibe about it as if it once had a soul. Now it just seems very "vanilla", with much of food tasting bland like many neighboring Minnesota eateries. In reading other online reviews, I can see that I am not alone in my observations and experiences of J Selby's. I sincerely want to love and be eager in continuing to patronize this establishment as plant-based restaurants are few and far in between here in Minnesota. J Selby's update- Major changes have been afoot at J. Selby's, and what a difference they've made! First of all, thank you to the management and staff for working during these crazy, unprecedented times! Every employee who came out, delivered my curbside order with a friendly disposition and a smile you could see from behind their masks. Service has improved 100% since my last visit. Thank you for the safety measures too! There were also some improvements with the food. The menu is limited, due to Covid-19, but they are excelling at what they are cooking up! Cauliflower Wings - With the to go order, dipping sauces come on the side, so it was the perfect opportunity to try several. Buffalo sauce was still a spicy hit. The maple mustard BBQ was very good. I'd love to try it with a vegan corn dog. The Sweet Chili sauce was so incredible, I wanted to swim in it! The cauliflower itself, still perfect - crispy battered outside, warm and tender inside. Yum! Dirty Little Secret - They are not using the same burger patties as the ones I disliked two years ago. The new patties are very tasty! I added some seitan bacon, which really set it off. This is now a 5-star dish! GLBT - Simple but delicious! A BLT with guacamole added. And as always, I omit the tomatoes. I ordered this a couple of times. I'm basically in love with their seitan bacon, so... Caesar Salad - I modified this salad, opting for mixed greens instead of romaine, and no walnut parm. Another simple yet delicious option. Topped with plenty of my favorite seitan bacon and a to-die-for caesar salad dressing. This is a solid choice on any day. Sides - I tried some different sides this time. The potato salad was ok, but not my favorite. Fries are fries. Can't go wrong there. Refried beans were really good! They could use a lil bit more sabor (flavor), but still good. We tried the Black Bean BBQ sandwich, the breakfast sandwich, animal fries, and the steak sandwich. The steak sandwich was by far the favorite. The food isn't too adventurous, but was all well made. Their home vinegarette was also very good. read more

The burger was better and had more flavor than most meat burger restaurants. The animal fries were definitely worth the upgrade and were fun to try. There was plenty of seating when we went at lunchtime and not a long wait for food. We're not vegan but will definitely be back to try more items! read more
