If I were to tell someone not familiar with this place it would not be impressive at first. Suburban strip mall, American menu with an Asian appearance. Then to describe the variety of menu and the slow cooked 'overnight' roast beef on a soft chewy bun their mouth would be watering. Take out ordering is easy from the large wall menu, there is also indoor dining. Prices were very reasonable and indeed the Roast Beef sandwich is large, ok not piled as high as a Chicago style deli pastrami but not sixteen bucks for a wich either. The place has the decor of a former Asian restaurant but the big push is roast beef sandwiches! The board up front spells it all out and if you don't read quick enough the quick tongued staff member at the cashier station will tell it to you. She was quick with an upsell and hard to resist. French dips, fries, O. Rings and two colas later we sat and exclaimed ... "it sure beats Arby's." We could have shared a sandwich with two sides to fill it out but we took some home to enjoy later. Finally I made it here and what a treat to meet the owner, Kevan and his sister, Fanny. Kevan had survived a pretty traumatic robbery incident at this restaurant and when I met him he was just full of energy and pride for the business he has established with lots of sweat and tears. He was super welcoming when he found out I am from Malaysia and he himself was also an immigrant like me from the same part of the world. This is a very unassuming place for roast beef but it's legit! It's not often that you find traditional American comfort food plate fused with Chinese food plate offerings on the menu. Don't let that turn you off. Try it before you beat it. This review is not for the Chinese food however because I did not order them this time. I came here specifically for the roast beef and it delivered. So comforting and the meat was well seasoned and definitely tender! I have been intending to eat at Penn Lake Roast Beef for some time but it is next door to my favorite Vietnamese restaurant so I am never able to resist the call of spring rolls and pho. Today was Monday and CoTu was closed and I was in the area and hungry so I dropped in to Penn Lake Roast Beef for lunch. When you walk in if you didn't know better you would think you were in an Asian restaurant. The star and decor is Asian (Chinese I think) but the menu is American. Roast beef obviously but also turkey, burgers, meat loaf, etc. I had the meat loaf sandwich combo which was a slice of meat loaf on a bun plus crinkle fries. The meat loaf was a little dry for my taste but the fries were hot and crispy. You order and pay at the front and seat yourself and someone quickly brings your order. You also bus your dishes. The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. I will definitely return and probably try the roast beef next. read more

I called Penn Lake Roast Beef to submit a to go order and then told her that I will be waiting in my car and to let me know when the order is ready and I'll run in and pay. She said the food would be ready in 10 minutes. We all waited patiently in the car. I was not expecting this but The lady came out after 5 minutes with the food. I gave her my credit card. Like Wallys but better! They are the same company but Penn Lake has the best service ever! Kevin the owner is the boss man and interacts with everyone that walks into the door. Beefs are larger then Wallys and they are open on Sunday's where Wallys is not. Decor is completely different then you would expect but don't let that foul you, this is the real deal! Foot is brought to your table, at that point I goto the condiment bar and get sliced pickles and spicy horseradish sauce! This is a great little place to stop for a quick bite to eat! It's very similar to Wallys roast beef and I can't decide which one is better, it's a tough call. Penn Lake Roast Beef has this old, run down Chinese restaurant feel with the classic wallpaper. I love it! You place your order at the counter. Their menu is on the wall and has pictures to help make your decision. Roast beef sandwich is my favorite next to the roast beef smothered in gravy with a side of mashed potatoes and corn. Nummyyyyy! It looks like the cook at Wally's has started his own business in the strip mall across from the old Wallys. It's virtually identical to the old Wallys with the same food. There's some changes, they do breakfast starting at 7 but other than that it's the same. The beef seems to be cooked for longer and there seemed to be less meat in my sandwich than I'm used to. They've just opened and it's not the slick operation that Wally is. The cash register was playing up when I was there and the meatloaf sandwich took forever to arrive. Hopefully they can work out the snags since it's closer to work and less busy than the new Wallys. read more

I got roast beef here. Can you believe it? The menu is surprisingly large for a place that is known for their roast beef. The customer service here is amazing. The woman at the counter was extremely friendly. We placed our orders and sat down to wait for delicousness. I ordered their 2 for $5.95 roast beef sandwich deal (was temporary but I'm sure that sale will pop up again). Just the basics as I wanted to try the real deal before I take on additional condiments. My buddy told me to take a bite without any sauces or anything and the definite star of the show was the roast beef itself (you're flabbergasted, I know). The beef was fresh, cooked to perfection and tasty. I then tried a bit of the BBQ sauce and that just wasn't for me. It was too sweet for my liking and definitely needs to be kicked up a notch. The buns also weren't my favorite thing though I'm kind of a sandwich snob. I am a firm believer that the bread makes a sandwich. This theory applies to all restaurants, not just PLRB. When I began devouring the second sandwich, I tried some horseradish sauce. This is the recommended condiment if you're going the sauce route. It burned oh-so-good all the way up to my brain and just matched very well with the roast beef. Overall I do recommend PLRB as you'll definitely get the taste and the customer service you desire. Some quality concerns pale in comparison to the awesome that emanates from this strip-mall treat. I am excited to return to try some other menu items! read more

Not sure if Wally has passed on or not, but Penn Lake is definitive of the expression that he would be rolling in his grave. The roast beef is extremely similar to what Wally's uses and the BBQ sauce is identical. Beef is perfectly tender and has a nice doughy bun, they have a wonderful horsey sauce that compliments the beef. The smoked turkey is a 10 in my book. My girlfriend ordered it and is the first time that I've ever heard her say that it's something she will be craving next week. Looks plain but is so flavorful and juicy. French fries taste exactly like White Castle and you receive a plentiful amount with a basket meal. Very accurately priced and a basket meal is the perfect amount of food for me. Fairly large dining area but the strip mall atmosphere is a huge turnoff and take out is a good idea Now the dilemma is Gyropolis or Penn Lake when in the neighborhood. The fries here aren't great but a fellow patron informed me that they will make poutine for you even though it isn't on the menu. Roast beef sounded good - decided to try this recommended spot. First thing I saw when I walked in was their menu and a sign that said "Combo no come with drink Man." We chuckled and ordered Roast Beef au juice and a roast beef with horseradish sauce. Both did come with fries! And Kevan's roast beef was done perfectly for both sandwiches.
