We love Fennie and Kevan !!!

We just flew into Minneapolis and went straight to penn lake roast beef and we were told the sandwiches were good. We went in and the service was sooooo friendly and welcoming that it literally made our whole day! They gave us Michelin star service! Not even exaggerating! It made everything taste so good that it was truly a blissful dining experience. This place is the absolute besttt!

Slow roasted,
John S.

If I were to tell someone not familiar with this place it would not be impressive at first. Suburban strip mall, American menu with an Asian appearance. Then to describe the variety of menu and the slow cooked 'overnight' roast beef on a soft chewy bun their mouth would be watering. Take out ordering is easy from the large wall menu, there is also indoor dining. Prices were very reasonable and indeed the Roast Beef sandwich is large, ok not piled as high as a Chicago style deli pastrami but not sixteen bucks for a wich either. There's more than sandwiches including cod, turkey and meat loaf. So much more to try at this otherwise relatively hidden mom n popper.

Chatted with the Superman owner, Kevan. If you know what this man went through, support this business and give him handshake!

Just ate there. Was tasty. Will be back in the future. Don't understand the Asian vibe though.

Chef Pedro took our order (bonus points) and we had a lovely conversation about New Orleans. The menu here has a lot of New Orleans food intertwined. Based on where Pedro previously worked in New Orleans, he has an outstanding culinary background. I was going to order the Muffaletta, which can be served hot or cold, but they were out. When I heard why, I was impressed. In New Orleans, the gold standard of bread is Leidenheimer. Minnesota doesn't have the same bread (Trung Nam Bakery is the closest substitute). Pedro uses Leidenheimer for his Muffalettas. Pedro also makes his own olive salad. I am looking forward to trying a Muffaletta. My husband ordered the Zambon Dip and really enjoyed it. I had the Herb Brooks Focaccia. It was great. Big portions. What is really funny is I knew the North Stars as I worked at the Met Center. Fun memorabilia too. On street parking and some tables outside. What we used to call a neighborhood joint. Stop in and say hi to Pedro. Now I just wish he would make Gumbo with some okra and filé.

Seems like a really busy takeout spot. Order: the North Star deluxe. Delicious. Their take on a Reuben without the kraut. All the meats were delicious and distinctive in flavor. The creole mayo added that nice creaminess. The homemade pickles on the side added that little vinegar punch to cut thru the richness of the sandwich. Smoked salmon BLT. Huge potion of perfectly smoked salmon. The smoke and crunch of the bacon was a perfect pairing. This is an amazing creative surf and turf. Overall: This is a must try on your Minnesota food tour.

They slice the meat and cheese right there and you can fully customize your sandwich, which I love. The service was phenomenal. Super friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. Cute shop and they also have a great selection of Italian products in the shop, plus their own ready-made items like homemade frozen pizzas and take-and-bake entrees, which is such a nice bonus. It's takeout only, but they make it easy with online ordering. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion size. This place is truly a hidden gem.

While it's got zero space for sit down dining, they are on top of their takeout game. The staff were efficient and filled orders quickly. I found the prices fair, and I look forward to a return visit to try out some other items. I really enjoyed the soup and see they post a new daily soup/pasta item to Facebook. What we tried: - Italiano sub 3/5 (bread was harder/crustier than I would have liked & sub was so wide it was hard to fit your mouth around it) - Chicago roast beef sub 4/5 (hefty amount of beef) - Daily soup (5/5) chicken vegetable (really great flavor and wide assortment of veg with huge chicken chunks) - Carrot cake (5/5) - Tiramisu (5/5).

Granted, I grew up elsewhere, so my tastes were forged differently than most Minnesotans, but I have persisted on my quest for great RARE and thinly sliced roast beef for the last 40 plus years. In my opinion, only two places qualify as great: Wally's Roast Beef in Bloomington and Maverick's Real Roast Beef in Roseville. Morts in Golden Valley used to be good, but then it went downhill and closed in 2023. Wally's is a funny, little place. First of all, it's located inside the Southtown Office Park Building. Go to the back (south) side of the building, go inside the door and it's immediately on the right. It's only open for lunch and it's closed on Saturdays. You will find it off of 494 on Penn Avenue. Wally's does that 1950's vibe and they specialize not only in Roast Beef, but also ham, turkey and a variety of soups. They also have daily specials as well as Blue plate, Red plate, and Green plate specials. One is meat loaf, one is roast beef, and one is turkey. They explain which is which on their website, but not on their restaurant board, which is insane, but is one of their quirks. Most importantly, the food tastes home-made, is excellent in terms of quality and taste and the prices are reasonable. C'mon, what more do you want? They have good milkshakes and tasty fries too. I think this place is a gem and I highly recommend it.

The French dip was good too, especially with that horseradish sauce- that will clear your sinuses up! Not the weak stuff. At lunch,…read morethere can be a mad rush for their classic roast beef sandwich, but the staff handles the crowd with efficiency and detail. I was on the street in front of Clancy's when one of their customers was mis-identified as an officer of an organization that was terrorizing Minneapolis. It had nothing to do with Clancy's! As I tried to get to my car, people yelled the most obscene and disgusting epitaphs at the couple in front of me. I was just walking down Grand Avenue. They were even spitting at this innocent individual. As a liberal who marched for civil rights and against the war in Vietnam during the 1960s and 1970s, I was horrified. Blaming Clancy's is ignorant, and an integral part of how this country is dismantling. On one side is a meat market with a variety of cuts of steaks, lamb, and other meats, which all looked fresh and quite nice. They also have a variety of items such as canned goods, pasta, eggs, etc. on the shelves opposite the meat counter. The entire place is quite sunny, pleasant, and cozy. On the other side is the eat-in, take-out deli sandwiches, that are made to order. The quality of the ingredients is excellent. The bread is freshly made (crispy baguette type) and you have a choice of Roast Beef, Roast Turkey, Tuna Salad, Smoked Ham, or Corned Beef. All sandwiches are $16.50 each (including tax) and come with a choice of mayonnaise, spicy stone ground mustard, red leaf lettuce, thin sliced red onion, salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, raw grated horseradish, pickled jalapeno, and roasted bell pepper. The default includes all toppings so if you don't want everything, be sure to specify what you do NOT want. Surprisingly, they do not carry any diet soda, nor do they stock any national brands (only local pop). There is a large menu on the wall, and you order at the counter and pick up the order (no table service). The food was attractively presented, and very, very good. My only gripe (besides the lack of diet pop) is that it's on the expensive side for lunch. Two sandwiches, a couple of bags of chips, and a couple of cans of pop will easily top $40, although I'd say the quality is top-notch.

In Sarasota where we just lived the last 5 years, a new deli closed after just 2 years, and there is nothing left. We've been visiting family in Sarasota every year for 40 years. Gone too in the Twin Ciries is the ownership by brothers Scot and Stu of Hopkin's beloved Crossroads Deli just last year. The new owners, a corporation owning 6-8 other restaurants have CHANGED almost all the recipes for breads, cakes , wonderous cookies and 80 % of all pastries! No more butter, no more fine ingredients and no more of their once " Grossinger's taste/quality" STELLAR seeded rye bread! They even eliminated the lemon flavoring. In their incomparable lemon coconut cake! Their stuffed cabbage is one of their only true deli dishes left. Sandwiches are half their original size...... heart breaking after going there 3-4 times a week for 25 years........ Cecil's of course had to cut back on the $$ use of butter in their pastries. But they have WORKED VERY HARD to still retain their wonderous long long ago heart warming flavors. ALL their sandwiches are AUTHENTIC. Old world New York City flavors! Made with care and love. My husband loves their beautiful generous Nova salmon platte. Noshing away happily! I love their pastrami Rachel's with plentiful half sour pickles lots of Russian dressing and creamy Cole slaw.
