We randomly stopped in after a visit to the cemetery. A very small space where you normally order from a kiosk (not my favorite). Chef Pedro took our order (bonus points) and we had a lovely conversation about New Orleans. The menu here has a lot of New Orleans food intertwined. Based on where Pedro previously worked in New Orleans, he has an outstanding culinary background. I was going to order the Muffaletta, which can be served hot or cold, but they were out. When I heard why, I was impressed. In New Orleans, the gold standard of bread is Leidenheimer. Minnesota doesn't have the same bread (Trung Nam Bakery is the closest substitute). Pedro uses Leidenheimer for his Muffalettas. Pedro also makes his own olive salad. I am looking forward to trying a Muffaletta. My husband ordered the Zambon Dip and really enjoyed it. I had the Herb Brooks Focaccia. It was great. Big portions. What is really funny is I knew the North Stars as I worked at the Met Center. Fun memorabilia too. On street parking and some tables outside. What we used to call a neighborhood joint. Stop in and say hi to Pedro. Now I just wish he would make Gumbo with some okra and filé. read more

We stopped in for lunch and were able to find street parking right across the street, which was convenient. When we arrived, there were already a few people ahead of us ordering and waiting for their food. Orders are placed through a kiosk, and while the service isn't particularly fast, it's definitely worth the wait, just be a little patient :) The space is small and cozy with a fun hockey themed décor that gives it a welcoming neighborhood feel. We waited inside instead of on the patio since there's only one pickup area indoors. The woman working was very soft spoken, but thankfully the restaurant wasn't too noisy, so we had no trouble hearing when our order was ready. I ordered the Modano with turkey, Havarti cheese, and house made pickles, and it was so, so, sooo good! The house made pickles added the perfect slight tanginess that really made the sandwich stand out. The portion was generous and well worth the price. My only small disappointment was that the combo comes with a bag of chips and a canned soda. I personally would've loved the option to get fries with my sandwich, and the side choices are limited. Overall, this is a great little spot with delicious sandwiches and a cozy atmosphere. I'd definitely come back for another Modano, next time I'll probably grab it to go! read more

A small place with sandwiches that pack big flavor! I loved the decor in here. Thankfully I came around 2pm and didn't experience any type of lunch rush. I ordered the hit honey chicken sandwich and it was delicious! The sandwich was HUGEEEE and PACKINNN! I turned it into two meals which is nice :) my only complaint is with the tomato bisque I ordered. I would like to think there's no such thing as too much Parmesan cheese, but this definitely had too much Parmesan cheese. It was really really thick and gritty because of that. Overall though, there are about 7 other sandwiches I would absolutely want to try from here! read more

This is a great little find deep in the Kingfield area of South Minneapolis. There is street parking only but that hassle is worth it. It's well away from the beaten path of downtowners, tourists, and suburbanites and I think it can truly represent what locals like in a deli. There are some great sounding sandwich combinations on the menu. Unfortunately, during my inaugural visit, they could not make some of them because they were out of key ingredients. That seems a little lame for a shop that only does sandwiches but it gives me an excuse to go there again to give it a try. What I did taste (a Dino Italian Sub and a North Star Deluxe) were well above average. Maybe not legendary but certainly exceeding a typical sandwich from a chain franchise. The prices were also about 1/3 higher than a typical chain franchise but I guess you get what you pay for. I liked the hockey themed schtick of the place and the young guys manning the lunch rush could all pass for avid hockey stars which fits the theme since the shop seems to be named after the old MN pro hockey team (North Stars). The only thing that was not super authentic about them were the lack of extreme mullets and they all seemed to have a full set of teeth. The sandwiches are fairly large, messy, and tasty. There are some great sidewalk tables to enjoy your lunch on a nice day. They even provide local hot sauce (Cry Baby Craigs) on the table which is very un-Minnesotan due to its spicy kick. What's not to like? If in the area, this is a definite recommendation to change up your lunchtime boredom with the same old same old. read more

Great creative delicious sandwich shop in south Minneapolis. Service was ok not much interaction. You order on a kiosk. The place has no indoor seating and a few tables on the sidewalk. Seems like a really busy takeout spot. Order: the North Star deluxe. Delicious. Their take on a Reuben without the kraut. All the meats were delicious and distinctive in flavor. The creole mayo added that nice creaminess. The homemade pickles on the side added that little vinegar punch to cut thru the richness of the sandwich. Smoked salmon BLT. Huge potion of perfectly smoked salmon. The smoke and crunch of the bacon was a perfect pairing. This is an amazing creative surf and turf. We grabbed our order to-go and headed over to Lake Harriet for a picnic, which made for the perfect afternoon. The smoked salmon sandwich was especially delicious--fresh, flavorful, and one of the best I've had. Everything was well made, and the quality really stood out. A cute little hole in the wall sandwich deli bursting with meat packed sandwiches and smells. I would recommend ordering online as their ordering method in store is a screen on a kiosk. We ordered for a pick up time at 11:30 and it was done by 11:20. There is very limited seating inside and a small patio on the sidewalk. Pop over to 46th on patisserie while you're waiting for a bit more space. Both sandwhiches were well balanced with saltiness of the meat, creaminess of the cheese. The focaccia was light and bouncy. North Star Deli is the result of one of my favorite restaurants in the North Loop closing, Guacaya Bistreaux. Pedro Joao, (Wolcott) gregarious chef and lover of life, opened up North Star Deli when the high rents of the North Loop became too much to endure. I still dream of the roast, whole chicken at the Bistreaux. Chef Pedro's skills are still on display at the North Star Deli. His sandwiches are some of the best in the Twin Cities. His Italians are unique with a touch of Latin spice. My family are addicted to them. After enduring the inflated rents of the North Loop, now Chef Pedro's staff is being harassed by ICE. It's not fair for a man who fought hard to become a legal resident of Minneapolis and raise his family in this wonderful city. His sandwiches have his heart and soul. Was influenced to come here by a Tik Tok I saw, and sandwich (Crazy GOAT or something similar) looked very good. The space is tiny, but no one was there so I had room to sit at the small counter. Probably space for 4-6 people max in there. The ordering system is a touch screen, and I get why places do that, but I don't like them. Sandwich was good, not great. I have heard about this place before and it worked out for a friend and I to finally try it out. I didn't have any specific sandwich on my mind, and we were open to trying anything. We went with the Dino Italian, fries, and a brownie for dessert. One sandwich, an order of fries, and a brownie was $30 - a little pricy if you ask me. We asked two people inside eating what they would recommend and they pointed out their favorites, but told us you really can't go wrong - they are frequent fliers. And I know why. Very tasty sub and it was stacked with ingredients. The fries were served with some bomb aioli that made me want seconds. We saved the brownie for later on in the day - oh man, what a letdown. It was dry dry dry! Not a fudgey experience you'd expect for $5. I'd rather have one of my own! Although the prices are on the higher side, everything tasted wonderful (minus the dry hockey puck brownie). Will be back in the future for another sandwich. FYI - there is a kiosk you order on. This is a hidden gem in Minneapolis. I had a friend date day and we swung in on a whim. Things to know, this is very self service. Grab your own drink, chips sides etc while they make the rest fresh. I will say that I had to ask for a few things not realizing it was a grab yourself but wasn't inconvenient. I ordered the North Star Deluxe, it was larger than expected and delicious. I love that they support local with the bread from Patisserie 46. They also had Minnesota based sodas to order. You can tell the ingredients are fresh. Outdoor seating is limited and indoor seating is even more so. Plan to maybe grab and go. It's street parking but even on a Saturday it wasn't bad. I loved the fun themed decorations. Great eats dished up by great community supporters! I ordered the herb brooks focaccia and really enjoyed it. The focaccia is nice and fluffy and the parm pesto has a really great flavor to it, not to mention a heart portion of veg and mortadella to keep you full. The atmosphere definitely lives up to its name with North Star memorabilia everywhere which was pleasant to see as a transplant from Dallas. Parking is on the street, but easily accessible. They do have a small bar seat area for dine in, but this place is definitely setup more for take out. They do have their menu online but I noticed they had some newer additions in person so make sure to call to get all your options. I'm glad to support small during this time and know that this establishment shares a stance with their community to keep immigration enforcement out. read more

We tried the burger (made it a double) and the turkey sandwich. This was one double patty burger that was worth the money!! The sandwiches do not automatically come with sides though. The only disappointing thing is that every sandwich comes with some kind of pork product, except for the burger. read more

North Star is a nice little lunch spot if you're just popping in for a break from a day on the lake. There isn't much seating though, a small window counter and a few chairs outside, so be prepared to take your order right back to your beach towel. I tried the Dino Panino, and all things considered, it was good. Just good, not blow my socks off or "I need to come back for this," but I ate the whole thing and I wasn't even a little upset about it. For the price of 15$ for just the sandwich (add 4$ if you'd like a basic bag of Potato chips and a can of Soda) I was really hoping for something memorable, and if not memorable, very filling. But what you'll get is a basic salami/italian sandwich on a decent bread roll that is done well, and if you ate a large breakfast, you might be full. I'd say, if you live in the neighborhood or you're at the lake and you're in a pinch for lunch, then this might, maybe.... be your go to spot every once in a while. I was very excited to try this place because they have some great sounding sandwich's. Unfortunately the wild rice soup was so salty it was inedible. I also got the bacon melt which was bland and the bacon was rubbery. It tasted like the bacon had just been sitting in a steamer all day long.
