Staff have agreed to stay as volunteers, being paid by donations and shared tips. That's right, resistance by refusing to generate tax revenue, and by feeding anyone in the community who needs it! In dark, scary, and dangerous times, it's heartening to see so many minnesotans doing their part to protect our community. Together, we are strong! I loooove modern times and is always the first restaurant I recommend anyone asking about breakfast recs. Their hash browns are reliably crispy. Go early because there's usually a waiting list. My favorite items are the chakra khan, good morning healing earth and the bacon. This place showed me how to enjoy vegetables with breakfast! Most recently I tried the Kate Bush, the flavors were definitely there, but all the food items fell into the soft category, it was delish so next time I'll add crispy bacon! This restaurant has vegan/vegetarian substitues for all meal choices. I always top everything with the lemon Serrano hot sauce, not too spicy! The vibe is always busy but chill. I have noticed the food does take a while to come out to you sometimes. read more

Whenever I go to take someone to the "neighborhood cafe," Modern Times is that cafe! It has a totally unapologetic DIY cozy vibe, featuring local art on the walls, hand-written signage, and mismatched dishware that genuinely makes it feel like you're having brunch at a friend's house. The staff are all great and super knowledgeable about the offerings so if you ever don't know what to get, they'll have a recommendation locked and loaded for ya! Their menu is incredibly thoughtful and I find this is one of the few places I can get a balanced meal just by ordering any single dish as-is; everything naturally is chock full of veggies and protein alike! They're also able to make anything on the menu vegetarian or vegan, so there's truly something for everyone here. When I went today, I had the best tea of my life!! I usually just get their drip coffee, but decided to be adventurous and order off the specials board today--I picked the orange cream oolong milk tea ($4.50) since I'm a big milk tea fan generally, and it changed my life--Tea Source citrus oolong with honey and steamed milk, which sounds simple, but was unbelievably good. Perfectly milky while still having a strong tea flavor, and wasn't too sweet! When I got down to the bottom of it, I got a look at the teabag which was absolutely PACKED with tea--I can safely say that this was the best milk tea I've ever had, and wish I could take a gallon of it home with me in a thermos. The food itself is always good here, but today I tried the pastrami hash ($17) for the first time--house hashbrowns (that are always seasoned to perfection), mushrooms, onions, green peppers, tomato, house-made pastrami, local cheddar, two eggs, poblano sour cream, served with spring greens in vinaigrette and two tortillas. You can also sub the pastrami for tempeh and/or the cheddar for cashew cream to make it veggie! Gigantic portion and the flavors were great. I normally go over-easy for my eggs but our server recommended poached so I went with that, which was absolutely the right choice. They also have a little pastry case with a daily rotation of scratch-made baked goods--we grabbed some scrap donuts on our way out today! read more

Another plant based paradise in Minneapolis. Our son took us here for breakfast and the food was incredible. I did the Surfs Up wrap with had so much flavor. It comes with some options some vegetarian option and some meat options. I didn't with bacon versus tempeh and it was amazing. Really big portions and they are all full of fresh ingredients. It's super popular so plan on waiting a bit but it's more than worth the wait read more

Went for brunch on a Friday which turned into lunch due to long delays getting seated, long delays waiting to order, further delays waiting for food to arrive, and then more delays when one of our orders was completely wrong. We never actually saw our server. The host ended up taking our order. I ordered a Reuben sandwich, which was mostly a sauerkraut sandwich with a light garnish of sliced beef. Not corned beef as it should have been. Just sliced beef and very little of it. One of our party ordered the RJB and was missing about half of the ingredients from the sandwich that were listed on the menu. Another in our party ordered 2 pancakes which were clearly done well before the other food for our table because they were stone cold on arrival. They were covered in butter, which had fully melted so they were clearly hot at some point. But they say long enough waiting for the rest of the order to get completely cold. Everyone was nice enough but the service was glacially slow. Don't go thinking to get out of there quickly. Don't even get me started on the person going in and out of the kitchen with the hairy armpits and the muscle shirt. If you live in the neighborhood and already know and accept these "quirks" because it's "your special place" then fine. By all means keep going. But if you're not one of the "in the know" crowd in the neighborhood, just be prepared for a different type of food experience. read more

Honestly, I was reading and looking at photos. It actually quite surprising. They have a good amount of vegan/ vegetarian food and meaty food as well. I like the hashbrown it was crunchy. I like that they give a big portion of food for it price. The green sauce is good not too spicy. The service was pretty good, it's not the best too. They're nice and friendly. I love how they all have a different personality and style! If you wanna get a spot, come early because they will make you wait in the other room. The ambiance is good, just everything is going on at once. Would come back and try something new. read more

Food was good. I had The Duke without the egg. Place was busy at 11. Waited 20-30 minutes for a table for our group. Took awhile to order and much longer to get our food. Everyone was a hangry by that time. We inhaled our food and got out. Inside was noisy. Hard to have a conversation at times. Upon arriving our waitress brought us room temperature water without ice and some menus and eventually came back to take our orders. After taking our orders she decided to stop working and sat down within sight of us and ordered her own food which was delivered before ours. After an extensive wait our food was eventually delivered to our table by a different waiter. The poached eggs I ordered were over cooked and did not have runny yokes, the pork sausage was not seasoned and bland, the English muffin I ordered was not toasted and instead just had melted butter poured on it, my hash browns were dry, and the "veggies" were nothing more than a small cup of steamed carrot slices and a few pieces of broccoli. My brother had to leave before we had finished so I didn't have a chance to talk to him about his meal. My wife's meal was equally mediocre and the Kombucha she ordered was advertised as being 16oz but the bottle they gave her was only 12oz. Now the most outrageous part is they add 23% to your bill in junk fees! We were charged a 3% fee for "processing and compostable tofo materials" even though nothing we ordered had tofo/tofu in it. And then another 10% fee for the luxury of dining at their restaurant, and an additional 10% for "service" which seemingly means the waitress gets her food delivered to her before you and that you instead either get overcooked or undercooked food. The receipt says this is because the restaurant is a no tipping restaurant, which given their exceptionally poor service is because they know no one would tip their lazy staff. Most insultingly of all when the waitress came back to take my money she solicited me for a tip when she asked if I wanted my change back! In retrospect I regret just not paying with a credit card and initiating a charge back when I got home. Super tasty option for vegan or carnivore lifestyles, and it's rare to find a place that can do both really well. We had a mix and match in our group. Highlight was the house made tempeh, which had the perfect texture, and the turkey, which was deliciously moist. Their house made spicy sauces are decent, but if you're hoping for a super kick, the on hand options at the tables aren't going to be what you're looking for. BEWARE. Not a no tip restaurant despite what they say. And service is soooo slow. Food great. But.. They brag that they are a no tip place. Yet they charge a mandatory 20% PLUS 2% sever fee which they say goes to the servers, total 22% add on. So, what they really mean to say is they are a mandatory 20=2222 % tip restaurant. Not a no tip one where customer decides based on quality of service. This is probably why you can end up waiting a very long time for service here throughout your meal. Wish they could just be honest and stop lying that they are a no tip restaurant. They aren't. Other than that and service speed, food highly recommended. Service speed is awful. We waited over an hour on a Monday for our breakfast food to arrive. In looking around and talking with others around us this wasn't unique. read more

One of the best plant based breakfasts I've had in a long time! Hearty, fresh, and the hash browns were perfectly crispy. Nothing more important on a breakfast plate than hash browns with real crisp. Went in on a Sunday for brunch when I was in town visiting recently, and it was packed as expected. Line out the door, so there was definitely a bit of a wait for a table/food. There was the option to either wait for a table or order at the counter and sit in the little dining area, so I chose to order at the counter. Tried for the first time today. Love a cafe with a whole vegan menu (and separate "regular" menu) so everyone can find something to eat! I got the vegan Evergreen with vegan sausage and fried tofu. I also got an iced matcha with oatmilk. Matcha was great, unsweetened which I loved because so many places pack matcha drinks full of sugar. The food was very flavorful with the perfect amount of salt and seasoning. I do recommend the tofu scramble over the fried tofu after tasting my friends order. Great meal to cure a slight hangover! WOWWWWWW. I think I might have found my new favorite breakfast spot :') the food here is fantastic and the vegetarian options are plentiful. I had the healing plate and I enjoyed every single bite of beets, kale, carrots, etc etc etc. all things I never know how to cook well myself and yet this dish is now one of my all time favorite breakfast dishes! On top of all of that the portions for the price you're paying is phenomenal. I was starting to think all the brunch places in Minneapolis are just expensive but this place proved me wrong! The place is not too big but I love that the waiting area has a lot of seating. There is definitely a bit of a DIY vibe going on here which might be another reason why I love it. The service was pretty good, our server forgot to give us creamer for our coffee but everything else was good! Will definitely be back again soon :) read more

In my top 3 breakfast/brunch spots. In Minneapolis. Depending on when you plan to go, expect a wait. It's good, and locals know it's good, so it's a popular spot on weekends. The specials are always fresh and a good choice for bold flavors. Huevos Rancheros was my go to for a long time. Southside hash is my current fav. They have vegetarian and vegan options that are delish. I feel like this place is very accommodating to food preferences and heat levels. Wonderful staff. The vibe is super low key laid back.
