    Soggie egg roles!
    Karina S.

I have been going To Golden Shanghái for many years. However, today I went and ordered a few lunch specials and a few extra eggrolls. The food was very poorly prepared, as well as the eggrolls were nearly raw inside the vegetables inside the eggrolls were mushy and you can still taste the dough off of the egg roll "crust." I called and explained my concerns and they completely ignored my concerns and said that their food is prepared the same all the time and I must be mistaken! I told them I had pictures and I could also take the food back and they said it wouldn't matter and that there was nothing they could do for me other than replace one dish that they made completely wrong! I will NEVER go back to Golden Shanghai as they clearly don't value their loyal customers and our complaints when they do happen. However, they are very willing to charge me $65.00 for my lunch and not make amends to the food that was very very poorly prepared! BE WARE WHEN ORDERING FROM THIS ESTABLISHMENT, AS THEY DO NOT VALIE CUSTOMER SERVICE!

My sister chose this venue for her daughter's birthday party, as well as for a gender reveal celebration for the new one coming. We had reservations made in advance and were given an area of the restaurant to the side where we could have our party. The restaurant in itself is quite lovely and elegant. The Asian theme and decor was tasteful and incomparable. Off the bat, as I walked in the the restaurant, it seemed very aesthetic and polished. Now on to the food...I let my family do the ordering and when it came out, I found the portions to be very large and the dishes to be cooked to perfection. We ordered white rice to go with the meal and had some soup to start off with. The waiter (who kind of seemed like he may be the owner) was extremely attentive and accommodating. He really cared about our satisfaction and enjoyment of our dishes. Our tea and water was checked regularly and refilled as necessary. All in all, we had a wonderful family celebration. We had a great time together and Golden Shanghai was the perfect choice for this party and a place for us to catch up with loved ones. I highly recommend this restaurant for dining, as well as for celebrations!

This spot is a gem! We've been going here for years, portions are large and you can't go wrong with their orange chicken, lo Mien or hot and sour soup. New management is wonderful and friendly. Ambiance is great.

As one of the few restaurants that strived all these years, Golden Shanghai was certainly one of the more popular Chinese restaurants among the locals. Despite having Shanghai in its name, it actually has a wide variety of Chinese cuisines from Sichuan to Fujian specialty plates, many of these you will not find anywhere in town. Compared to other Chinese restaurants, the decor here is one level above, suitable for casual dining or special occasions. If you are clueless what to order, make sure you ask for recommendation. You will not be disappointed. Here are their spicy beef soup, pickled fish soup, Chinese angel hair noodles and shredded pork wraps.

I have been to Golden Shanghai a few times and have never been wowed either by the food or the service. This visit was no exception. There is a prominently displayed help wanted sign as you walk in and I'm frankly surprised by how well they were doing in spite of the fact that they had one server and one helper to take care of a full restaurant with a large party in one room. The poor server was running around and actually sweating as she managed to get to all of the 10-12 tables. Our service was slower than normal but we were still able to have lunch and get out in about an hour and a half. The actual strip mall restaurant is older and hasn't been updated in all the years that I've been going there. The women's restroom is very old and not all that clean but they do have bottles of hand sanitizer on each table. I had the lunch special chicken and veggies that comes with soup (pretty bland) and a large, heaping plate of chicken and veggies with an innocuous white sauce, and a very small egg roll. The entrée portion was large - especially for lunch - so the higher price ($11.95) wasn't too remarkable. I go to Golden Shanghai when I have lunch with a 97 year old relative who lives nearby because it's the closest Chinese restaurant to her building. I don't think I'd make a special trip to eat there but it's definitely adequate.

We've been coming to this restaurant for near 10 years now, and we've always loved this place. But in the recent few years, their prices raised by a few dollars each dish. That didn't seem like an issue cuz their food is great as usual. But today, when I ordered the crispy duck, there's maybe a few scattered pieces of meat, definitely not a full half like they advertised. When I asked about it, the cook angrily argued that it's a full half and flicked around the duck pieces with his gloveless hand, attempting to "assemble" a duck shape. It's so ridiculous, the cook later showed me the uncooked raw duck, it's literally the size of a small chicken. I don't have big hands and the raw duck, while uncooked, is the size of one of my hand... they raised the food prices and cut prices on the ingredients? It's so stupid to see one of my favorite restaurants turn into this scam. Unfortunately, I didn't take a pic of the dish before it was sent back. But even at checkout, they gave us 3 fortune cookies-- with one of them completely unpackaged and just taken to the table with the waiter's bare hands... what the actual hell have happened to this place. When we got boxes for leftover food, but the boxes are at least a third smaller than before: they charge 25 cents per box so they even try to get money here. And no more "thank you" take out bags, now it's black trash bags. It's so gross.

I always get the Mongolian beef with fried rice (no egg; I'm allergic) My husband always gets the General Tso chicken with the fried rice and he ALWAYS orders this and never has a complaint. My son gets the Sesames chicken also with fried rice and it's sweet and crunchy as they fry the chicken to mix in their sauce and it's worth every penny. Every time! I am so glad that they are so consistent and have not changed recipes or adjusted seasonings. Ordered our two favorites - pickled pepper beef and mapo tofu. We ordered the fried tofu (with peppers and onions), orange chicken, fried fish fillet, and veggie delight (mixed veggies). The fried fish fillet was definitely the standout. Perfectly crispy on the outside with a light, tangy layer of sauce that added flavor without making it soggy. Easily my favorite dish of the meal. The fried tofu was also really solid and flavorful with just the right amount of spice. The peppers and onions complemented it well without overpowering the tofu itself. The orange chicken was okay. I tend to compare orange chicken to Panda Express (probably unfair, but it's my benchmark), and this one didn't quite hit that same balance of crispiness and sauce. I think if it had a bit more meat within each piece, would be better. The mixed vegetables were decent but not something I'd order again. They felt a bit drenched in sauce and didn't have much depth in flavor. One of the highlights of the visit was meeting an elderly woman who helps out when it gets busy. She mentioned she was the former owner. She was incredibly kind, and we ended up having a really nice conversation in Mandarin. That personal touch made the experience even more memorable. Otherwise, really nice venue with lots of space and tables. Waiters always refilled my water, which is a good plus. Also gave me fresh rice when I took the leftovers to go. Overall, a solid meal with a couple standout dishes. I'd definitely come back for the fried fish fillet and tofu. Will be back to try their other dishes.

Service was quick to take the order, refill water and clear out empty plates/steamer baskest. The dishes coming out of the kitchen was at a more erratic pace, but it's all about the food. Mapo tofu was good, with a light slick of chili oil. The flavors were spot on with little chunks of fermented salted broad beans. The heat was also moderate, but it did have a kick as you were eating it. That signature mala numbing spiciness started building, but not hot enough for my palate. Green beans were also nice and tender. Sometimes when they come out the fryer, the skin can be a little leathery, but wasn't present here. BBQ Buns were very soft and tender, loaded with BBQ pork. The shao mai had a nice bouncy texture and cooked well. Shrimp Lo Mein had the flavors of the Chinese American classic, it looks like the noodles were hand made too. Only miss was the shrimp dumplings. They were too close to each other and they stuck together. The wrapper was also overcooked, but somehow the shrimp was not. Nearly impossible to pickup with chopsticks, because the wrapped just fell apart, even with a delicate touch. Worth a stop and probably tastiest Chinese food in the neighborhood. It was getting crowded and there was a wait by the time we left. However it was Denver restaurant week, so not sure how it usually is during the week.

Lately it feels like a lot of restaurants are charging more while giving less, and it's getting harder to find places that actually care about the customer experience. Unfortunately, this was another one of those experiences. We ordered three side dishes and three drinks, and the bill came out to around $100. Two of the three sides were served cold, the dumplings at least came out hot, but they were pretty mediocre and nothing I'd order again and drinks were extremely over priced. The waitress was fine, no real issues there, but it did feel like the food may have been sitting in the kitchen too long before it hit the table even though the place was empty. At the end of the day, it's hard to justify paying that kind of money for cold, underwhelming food, then feeling awkward about the tip because the experience just wasn't good. I won't be back. If I had known this is what the experience was I would have definitely gone somewhere else. As an added bonus I felt like crap afterwords, I think it was because of poor quality ingredients. My aim in writing these reviews is to highlight the restaurants and businesses that truly take care of their customers, to give people a heads up about the ones that clearly do not prioritize quality or the customer experience, and to express myself in a world where it often feels like there is very little room to speak honestly about paying top dollar for mediocre experiences. Very disappointing.
