4.5 stars. An excellent experience, with just a couple minor misses. With the whole family back together for just a short while, we wanted to have at least one nice meal together. Originally we had reservations at a trendy new restaurant in Sunnyvale, but it has a reputation for running out of its most popular dishes up to 3 hours before the last seating. So we canceled those plans and came here instead. We had only been to the Cupertino location before, and had a very fine meal, but couldn't get a reservation there on short notice but we were able to find a table her in Mountain View. The restaurant is out of place in the a strip mall on ECR which it shares with a paint store, a pool supply store, a Petco, and an O'Reilly Auto Parts. It's small and less elegant than the Cupertino location, and our table wasn't ideal as it was right by the kitchen. But we were seated right away and our very friendly server got us oriented to the menu and then allowed us plenty of time to make our selections. There are certainly a lot of things to choose from, and we had to make some agonizing decisions lest we ended up with 20 plates on our table. That evening we enjoyed: Kanpachi carpaccio - thin slices of amberjack in a yuzu sauce. The fish was fresh and the sauce was delicious. It would have nice if the sauce was a little thicker because it kinda dripped off the fish, but it was a very nice first bite Ankimo - monkfish liver. Buttery texture and rich flavor that was nicely enhanced by the ponzu sauce Agedashi tofu - a familiar dish done well here. Unexpectedly large pieces of tofu soaking in a dashi broth and topped with seaweed and scallions. Very nice. Maze udon - a "dry udon" with beef tendon, runny fried egg, Japanese pickle radish, and potato chips. I usually dislike tendon but this was a very good rendition. The pickle and chips provided a pleasant textural contrast. Ajillo with octopus - sauteed octopus and small scallops, served with slices of toasted bread with a suggestion to eat this as a kind of crostini. This was our least favorite dish of the evening, as it didn't quite hit the right flavor notes for us. Buta torotoroni - fatty, tender Kurobuta chashu pork in a sweet wine sauce. My piece (the biggest one, of course) was tender but a little dry on the inside, but I still loved it. Gindara clay pot - salted black cod in a bowl of hot sizzling rice, served with a dashi broth. This was the last of the main dishes to hit our table, and was worth the wait. The rice in direct contact with the clay pot was wonderfully crispy. The broth came in a teapot that we poured over our individual bowls, and was quite rich with flavor and was perfect with the rice. Lychee soy milk sorbet - refreshing and palate cleansing, a good way to end the meal. Hoji tea creme brulee - I wasn't certain that a roasted tea flavor would make sense in a creme brulee, but hey, it worked. Not too sweet, nice creamy texture, enticing aroma. I could have eaten one all by myself. Service was quite good and very courteous, but the restaurant was quite busy that evening and the FOH staff had trouble keeping up. But they were very apologetic about slight delays in getting the food to us, and TBH we weren't even bothered by this at all. All in all this was an excellent meal and we're looking forward to a return visit. I would have preferred a different presentation of the meal, however. It started off with the carpaccio by itself, which is a very logical first step, but after that the next five dishes landed on our table in short order. It would have been nice to have them presented in a more sequential manner - for example, start with the carpaccio then after the plate had been cleared bring out the monkfish appetizer, then the agedashi tofu. AFter that, then the udon, octopus, and chashu could all come together, followed by the clay pot at the end. But despite the sudden appearance of multiple dishes, at no point did we ever get the sense that they were trying to move us along quickly and we had ample time (over 1.5 hours) to savor our meal. read more

Raw fish dishes were both very fishy and not fresh. (Got hamachi carpaccio and yuzu ceviche fish of the day). Had to force ourselves to finish them. Couple next to us also complained that the uni on their hotate/uni carpaccio was bitter and not good. Cooked stuff was ok. Beef tongue shioyaki and Buta Niku clay pots were ok. The food was delicious and the mixed shochu drinks were yummy as well! I would come back for a few mixed shochu drinks and shareable small plates. We got the Buta Meshi claypot rice (bbq pork belly with a poached egg). Super yummy, the raw egg yolk always adds a nice layer of creaminess to the rice. I'd recommend requesting for some dashi on the side to mix into your bowl at the end for a nice chazuke (dashi broth over rice). The service was slow, the servers were busy but it took a while to get our order taken or items from follow up requests. They were friendly despite the slow service. We visited for an early dinner on a Saturday and were seated quickly without a reservation, which was a pleasant start. Our meal began with ankimo and sashimi moriawase. The ankimo was not bad although a bit dry. The flavorful ponzu sauce did help to improve the taste. The sashimi moriawase was rather ordinary and didn't stand out. The highlight of our meal was the sake oyako clay pot. It featured a generous portion of Ikura and salmon. The crunchy bits of rice were perfectly cooked. We also ordered the dashi broth, which complemented the clay pot well, though it was slightly too salty given the already seasoned rice. The Hamburg steak was a little tough, I was expecting actual Hamburg steak and not a ground meatball. The risotto croquette was a little overpowering/mushroom herbal taste. Tempura udon noodles were decent, but the tempura was a little too stiff and was really looking for it to be a bit more light and airy. The mentaiko pizza was a letdown. I didn't taste any mentaiko and zero crab as the strong cheese taste completely took over from a taste standpoint. The kurabota pork clay pot rice was a hit. Love the temperature and how it sizzled the rice. Overall the service was a little awkward. We had to ask for utensils and water, as well as the check. Went here with my family for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night. Reservations were easy to make on Yelp, the table was ready when we arrived, and all the workers were friendly. We ordered the Tenpura Moriawase, Tenpura Udon, Sake Oyako Meshi, Rib-Eye Steak, and the Okonomiyaki style pizza. All the food was really good (the salmon clay pot rice was my favorite dish) and the service was amazing as well. Our server checked on us a lot and was pretty helpful. The ambience was perfect for dinner- not awkwardly quiet and not too loud either. My family sat in the booth in the back (not tatami style, shoes were still on) and we were able to hold a nice conversation while eating without anyone too close to us. All of the dishes we ordered were really tasty. The meshi had nice crispy bits on the bottom. They bring it to you and mix it up in front of you. The beef tongue had a nice beefy flavor and was tender. Came here for a dinner with my family. We were able to make a reservation first and got a tatami table which was great cause it was a little more private. We wanted to take my parents to try something new and different, but the ambiance also looked fit for a good date spot. Classic Japanese inspired decorations that looks pretty modern. But literally everything tasted so good! Main highlights were the aga maguro uni carpaccio, gindara munieru (black cod), and sake oyako meshi clay pot. The carpaccio was deliciously marinated in ponzu and elevated by the uni. The black cod was cooked so nicely and was very tender and favorful. And the clay pot was just a classic crispy rice bowl with all the fixings but you could tell that the quality of the ingredients were top notch. We also ended up ordering the two dessert items they had on the menu - a green tea creme brûlée and lychee sorbet (which came with a little gummy bear and was so cute!). Creme brûlée is my usual default dessert but I have to say the lychee sorbet would be my first choice if I come back again. We came to Gochi for dinner on a Tuesday night. It was easy to make a reservation on Yelp and we were glad we did as the restaurant filled up quickly. This is a great spot to come for Japanese tapas and to try a variety of dishes. We were just a party of 2 but ended up ordering 6 dishes as we wanted to try everything. The hamachi carpaccio, yaki onigiri with ikura, and agedashi tofu were the highlights. The hamachi has such good flavor with a garlic, ginger, ponzu marinade and the yaki onigiri was perfectly crispy on the outside. We also got the cold dipping udon with dashi, scallop and octopus stone pot rice, and vegetable tempura which were all pretty good as well. For drinks we both got the fresh grapefruit mixed shochu. We thought it would come out as a mixed drink but we ended up getting half a grapefruit to squeeze into shochu on ice. It was unexpected but pretty fun and the grapefruit was definitely fresh. I've been to the Cupertino location before and I thought it was pretty good, so I was excited to see how this one compared. I'd say they're pretty similar, but the Cupertino one is bigger. My party of 3 was seated right away around 12:45pm on a Saturday. We shared the tempura udon, hotate carpaccio (seared scallop topped with uni), asari butter (clams), small unagi meshi clay pot rice and the sake harami nitsuke (braised salmon belly). Everything was served really quickly which was great. Our favorites were the hotate carpaccio and the unagi clay pot rice. Unfortunately, we did find a strand of hair in our clay pot rice from when they were mixing it for us, but when we brought it to their attention, they offered either a refund of the item or a new replacement. They were very apologetic and gave dessert on the house, which was super kind of them :) They handled the situation very well and all of the employees were great. My boyfriend and I visited for a late Valentine's dinner on a Saturday evening and really enjoyed our time here! He made reservations through Yelp 2 weeks prior so we were seated immediately when we got there. The menu and ordering is via QR code, and they keep the tab open until you're ready to pay at the end. So there was minimal interaction with waiters, but all of the food arrived super quickly. We had our food within 5-10 minutes of ordering. We ordered the unagi karaage, maze udon, beef tataki, fried oysters, kani cream korokke, and the potato gratins with mentaiko. Everything was amazing and we were surprisingly full after all of these dishes. The maze udon was very interesting - a soupless udon dish with beef, cheese, and chips! I don't remember our waiter's name, but he was a nice young gentleman with glasses. He walked us through the menu and answered all of our questions. He was very attentive and gave us a few recommendations. Here's what we ordered: Tsukemono ( assorted picked veggies) - nothing too special Sashimi Moriawase (assorted sashimi) - just your normal sashimi platter Hamachi Carpaccio (quick seared amberjack) - very fast and flavorful Tenpura Moriawase (assorted seafood and tempura) - your regular tempura Okonomiyaki Style (fusion pizza recommended by our waiter) - probably my favorite dish. It was very unique and tasty. Crust was crunchy and all the flavors blended well together even with the cheese Unagi Meshi (eel clay pot rice) - I love all types of clay pot rice and this one definitely hit the spot Given that it was a Friday night, it was crowded and slightly loud. I've been to Gochi many times and love their food. They have a large array of Japanese small plates. They also have fusion items but I usually stick with more of the "authentic" ones. This time my favorite items were the unagi rice (love the crispy bits) and maitake tempura (a nice change to the typical vegetables). While the food here was definitely deserving of 5 stars. The service was quite meh. We sat in the Japanese style tables where shoes must be removed prior to entering. It's a little more private than a standard table and reminded me of my previous trip to Japan which was great. However, for some reason it was quite difficult to get the attention from servers. We ordered from a QR code where you must pay AND atop BEFORE your meal is served. However, aside from the lack of service, the food was definitely delicious. The uni and scallop clay pot (with dashi) and mentaiko pizza were my favorite. I think this was the best clay pot I have had. The crunchy rice at the bottom was made perfectly where it is actually crispy and not just hard. The dashi brought the dish to the next level. Mix it together or drink it alone. Either way it's great. The pizza was very light and flakey. It reminded me of green onion pancakes in the form of a pizza. It was even good to eat as leftovers the next day. One of the best birthday dinners ever! I decided to go to Gochi for my birthday dinner because I have been wanting to try this restaurant out for awhile now. I made a reservation the day before and the day of, I needed to go earlier than expected and they were able to accommodate my reservation to be an hour earlier which I appreciated. You could order + pay ahead of time via QR code or you could also order via the waiter. we ordered the daikon salad, salmon carpaccio, tori nasu garlic, uni hotate meshi, and one more dish which I forgot the name of but it had beef and asparagus wrapped in a crispy layer. The daikon salad was so yummy and refreshing and I loved the taste of dashi it had. The tori nasu garlic was also surprisingly delicious and the flavors were just amazing. The beef and asparagus roll was yummy but I could pass on it next time. The salmon carpaccio was great too and I loved the hint of truffle. The uni hotate meshi was so delicious and the hotate was incredibly soft and fresh. The uni was fresh too and the pieces were big. I think I would've preferred to not mix the uni with the rice because I felt as if it was harder to taste the uni once it was all mixed in. I think the server did forget our uni hotate meshi because we waited 40 minutes and then once we called attention to it via our server, he went to fix the issue. We came here with a reservation on a Saturday night and were seated at one of their lovely booths - you take your shoes off and have a space to yourself since it's separated with a panel from the neighboring table. The ambiance is lovely because of this and the waiter was quick to take our order once we were ready. The only reason I docked a star is that it got increasingly difficult to get service at our table once the food arrived - we wanted an extra spoon and couldn't get anyone's attention for 5+ mins by the end though they had told us we only had 1.5 hours at our table. In terms of the food though, everything is super tasty! Here's what we got: clams miso soup and mushroom miso soup - you can order two varieties of miso soup and though they are both pricier than your typical bowl of miso soup, I've never had miso soup like these before! Both the clams and the mushrooms were very unique and flavorful Kaisou salad - we loved this salad. There were four of us and it was definitely a large enough portion to share. The dressing was the perfect balance of tangy and sweet, and there is such a nice mix of ingredients too (from leaves to daikon to sprouts) Salmon and hamachi sashimi - super fresh and all we could ask for with sashimi! Unagi meshi - the bowl comes piping hot and the rice on the edges of the bowl gets crispy if you leave it in long enough. So so yummy and comes in many sizes depending on how big your party is! Green tea ice cream and black sesame ice cream (both with red bean added) - I so highly recommend adding the red bean if you're a fan of sweet red bean! it's tasty and complements the softness of the ice cream very well. Both flavors of ice cream were really yummy too, though the black sesame ice cream was not a strong as I would've wished it to be. My friends and I were in the San Jose area for a wedding and stopped by Gochi based on my cousin's recommendation. We made a last minute reservation for 9 people on a Saturday and they were able to accommodate us. Service was great and the food came out very fast, which was great! You order online through the QR code menu which was convenient so we didn't have to split bills with 9 people. I got the Tanuki Udon which I thought included actual tempura with veggies but alas, it was just the tempura bits. The broth was good tried the okonomiz. Came in on a Sunday with a party of 4 at 5:45pm with a reservation. There is a big parking lot in front so parking is very easy. The inside is pretty spacious, it was pretty busy when we came in. You can order via QR or with a waiter. The QR code is quite small and difficult to scan. We ordered pretty big variety of items. Everything was very tasty. My personal favorite was the mushroom tempura. One interesting highlight was the grapefruit shochu drink - on the menu it says "freshly squeezed" and was priced regularly among the other drinks. If you order this, you will get an actual half of a grapefruit that you will have to squeeze yourself. This a bit of a quirky order that I found quite funny, so just know that if you order this drink that this will be what you are getting. Another interesting quirk about this place is that there is a time limit of 90 minutes. While generous it does add a bit of pressure while eating. One of my favorite dinner spots in the Bay Area! There's really not one thing I dislike from their menu. The staff is friendly and there's a large parking lot in the plaza where the restaurant is located. My family comes here for birthday celebrations and when people visit us from out of town. Some of my favorite dishes are the shimeji tempura, agedashi tofu, mentaiko pizza, gyutan shioyaki, sake oyako meshi clay pot (ask for dashi broth on the side) and the yaki onigiri. read more

Delicious food but terrible service. We came here on a weekday evening and had reservations. Once we arrived, the server showed us to the table and told us we had 90 minutes before the next party arrived at our table (that was kinda rude, but okay). A few minutes later, a server arrives with menus. They also have a QR code on the table to check out the menu and place an order. The waiter said she'd be back in a few minutes to take the order, but 20 minutes later, no one arrived, so we just went ahead and placed the order via the QR code/app. Once the order was placed, the food did arrive really quickly. I can't remember the names of the items, but we tried Hamachi Carpaccio, chilled octopus, Yaki Onigiri, and one other fish item. The food was absolutely delicious. Reducing 1 star for the poor service, but I will come back again because the food is worth revisiting. read more

My boyfriend and I came here through recommendations of his colleague. All though the people were nice, the service was mainly through their QR code. We had been sitting down for a while, before they brought us paper menu. We assumed we were to order from the code as it was on the table. Did did check in on us here and there. The food was just ok, nothing really jumped out. I did like the crab cake like thing, but otherwise it's hard to say that we would drive from San Jose just to try this place again. The price is a bit steep too basic flavor. read more

Can't say enough about this dining experience! Got on the waitlist for 2 when they opened for dinner and we're fortunate to be seated up on arrival (about 15 min later). The food is on the pricier side but everything is packed with flavor (can you say umami bomb?!). We got a chashu miso pizza, tofu Nanban, kano shinjo, and a clay pot with scallops and garlic butter. We were stuffed and so happy by the end. Tofu Nanban - fried tofu and eggplant in a garlic-soy vinegrette. Surprisingly our favorite dish of the evening! Tofu was fried perfectly to where the outside had a bit of crunch and the inside still melted in your mouth. The sauce compliment the eggplant and tofu perfectly and made you want to savor each bite! Kano shinjo - fried crab cakes wrapped in seaweed and mochi pieces in dashi broth. The dashi broth was delicious and was so fun to eat with the fried crab cakes and mochi pieces. You'd think the mochi would be weird in a savory dish but once you try it, it just makes so much sense! Clay pot with scallops and garlic butter - also delicious and can be sized up or down based on party size. This is another very rich dish that benefits from the dashi broth you can buy as an add-on. I'd love to try their other clay pot options! Chashu miso pizza - the most underwhelming dish, but still yummy, especially if you love cheese. Cheese was gooey and stringu and the chashu was cooked perfectly - little bit of chew, soft, and oh so delicious! read more
