I've been to all the high-end sushi spots in the Bay Area, and Katsu is doing one thing no one else is doing - surprising cuts of nigiri you're not going to find anywhere else (eel eggs, sea snail, etc.). Now, there's a reason most places won't serve them - they're good, but not as divine as other places (with their wagyu, uni, and fatty tuna). You'll still get all those spectacular cuts, so for a sushi afficionado, it's a great time. The location is a bit of a drawback, because while some people around the bar are passionate about sushi, others are just VC-types with unlimited funds and little experience. Because Michelin has so far not noticed this spot, it's still a relatively easy reservation. Service is fantastic, and the chef (and the apprentice) are excellent.

I recently went to Katsu for my friend's birthday, and wow, what an amazing experience it was! Not only was the ambiance a beautiful, intimate atmosphere, but the staff and chefs exuded this wonderful, fun energy that made the dining experience that much more fun. The food itself was so delicious and so well thought out. From the conversation and observation of the chef's work, you can tell that each step is well thought out and intentional. Thinking about it now makes my mouth water - can't wait to come back again!! 10/10 would recommend for yall to stop by and experience this for yourself!

You get what you pay for. And wow, what a luxurious experience it is. I think the joke of the night was that even the bathrooms are luxurious (trust me on this one). For $340 (post tip and tax) you get an incredibly intimate venue with 8 people as you watch 3 sushi chefs make beautiful bites over and over and over until you've had your fill. Every week is different based on what they freshly purchase, but notable favorites from our set were the monkfish liver (super rich and fatty and savory) and the trout (like salmon but better in every way salmon is good). There was fresh wasabi, grated for serving in front of your eyes (none of that dyed horseradish). They even ended the meal with hand-whisked matcha. Of course, $340 is not an everyday dinner kind of price, so save this for special occasions. Unless you're buying? ;)

Highly recommend their Uni. Sometimes they would have special orders which they would text you a few days in advance to see if you want to place additional order - we always say yes to the special orders. Tip: ask for smaller portions of rice from the beginning so you won't get too full.

I've had the pleasure of trying many different omakase dinners and even ones overseas in Japan. I truly enjoy the intimate setting this place showcases. The two chefs were incredibly welcoming and I can certainly see their engagement with each and every guests. The matcha green tea was made from scratch and I absolutely enjoyed that a lot. Very tasty. The uni dish with the edible bowl was also delicious. I am also not much a fan of squid but the soup the squids were in was delicious that I was able to enjoy that dish. A few hit and miss dishes such as the spongy fish eggs-- I just didn't like the texture and really didn't enjoy that one. The crab one was also very delicious. Overall I had a great experience. However, for the price tag, I would certainly try places like the Shota or Omakase in SF.

Amazing omakase. This is my favorite omakase place in the Bay Area. Counter only seats 8 and chef is friendly and service welcoming. This is my second d time dining here and I love that they always have a seasonal add on -- first time I added the yura uni from Awaji (September time frame) and it was the best uni I've ever had. This time I added seko crab from Hyogo, which was also amazing. Everything is prepared to perfection. Don't hesitate and book if you haven't tried.

The amount of omakases I've been to does not meet the same experience as this one. Everything about Katsu is absolutely to die for. The minimalistic feel and intimate dining experience was great. Every single person from the chef to the hostess to the back chef, everyone was so attentive and so so so kind. We booked a month in advance to celebrate our anniversary. Definitely keep an eye out in case you're looking for a specific time. The day prior to your reservation, they'll text you regarding an add-on that they'll prepare for you day of. (Love this, okay options!!) Day of, they'll let you inside at the exact time of your reservations then you'll get seated. You watch the chef prep the fish, which I appreciate because you get to capture the chef's techniques and if you're a cook, you'll learn a trick or 2. Every single dish was so fresh and well prepared. The chef will check in with you and make sure you're not too full because he can reduce the size or make sure the wasabi isn't too spicy. Again, VERY ATTENTIVE, making sure you have the best experience, which is not very common for a lot of places. 20 dishes (I think it was) was the full course. You can add a pairing or just order a drink or 2 from the menu. For our anniversary celebration, they brought out a black sesame ice cream. Was not expecting this at all. Definitely worth both my arms and legs. I'll be coming back and experiencing this a million times again. Everything was lovely. Thank you so much, Katsu team!

Amazing and delicious experience for a birthday dinner. They only have capacity to serve about 10 people per seating, so definitely very intimate and hands on. I really appreciate seeing all the staff's attention to detail from preparing the sushi, teas, and overall presentation. Everything was absolutely melt in your mouth delicious. We added on the extra uni plate and it totally made my night. Can't wait for another opportunity to come back!

Had an early Valentines Day dinner here. Every one of the dishes was immaculately seasoned and of the highest quality. Really subtle, delicate flavors - nothing in your face or overpowering. Multiple dishes with uni (sea urchin), so fresh, smooth, awesome. All the fish exceptionally fresh - the little pieces the chef trimmed off as waste would have made a great meal. Service was perfect as well. They only seat 8 people, so their staff can take care of everyone really well. Everyone was friendly and polite. The place is simply decorated in an elegant way, great attention to detail. It's true it's not inexpensive, but if you can afford it, it's an indulgence that just makes you feel like food is more than just good tasting sustenance. The variety of dishes and the standard to which each is held really makes for a special evening. We won't do it often, but we'll love doing it again for a special occasion.

You must reserve in advance! Make sure to reserve when it opens to get a spot. Once you walk in, the waitress will ask for your name. Bags and coats will be placed in a corner/coat hanger, so you don't need to worry about things weighing you down as you eat. No worries if English isn't your first language. I saw the sushi chef assistant explaining the menu to the people next to us in Mandarin. The inside is soo nice- definitely gives modern Japan wooden vibes. I loved how the sushi was always served on top of the black block. The aesthetics were definitely on point. The food was amazing and definitely on par with the sushi in Japan. They import most if not all of their fish from Japan. My favorite was the tuna and black parch. It was very enjoyable watching the chefs cut the fish and listening to their explanations. The experience was immersive and relaxing. The fish itself was really well seasoned, fresh, and texture was op. Literally zero complaints! For birthdays, they gave us a small black sesame ice cream for dessert, which was also really good. And some high grade matcha for everyone. This experience was one of the most amazing I've had, though very expensive.

I must say, the service here is definitely unrivaled by all. My green tea was continuously topped off and the associates there just kept an eye on pretty much the entire experience. The chef introduced each item to us and how it came about to be made, and every piece was as delicious as the next. I am a sucker for toro and uni and those pieces of nigiri were arguably the best I've had, however, everything tasted extremely fresh and by the end of the meal I was actually stuffed! There were also a few items that seemed relatively new and innovative to me that really expanded my flavor palate. Hats off to the chef for creating such an amazing menu. The dessert was a house made black sesame ice cream that was light and smooth. All in all, super solid spot.

Katsu was such a great place for whenever you want to treat yourself to an omakase experience. Chefs were knowledgeable and service was top notch. I loved how unique each of the dishes and nigiris were and you can tell how much thought was put into creating them. Interior was chefs kiss and ambiance was the perfect spot for any special occasion that you have in mind. Katsu forsure made it onto my top three omakase spots in the Bay Area

I have been wanting to try Katsu since it opened about a year and a half ago. I was finally able to dine here with my partner earlier this month and it did not disappoint. Every course was so incredibly flavorful and special. The chefs were super kind and friendly and each course was served in a timely matter. My least favorite thing about omakase is that sometimes there is too long of a gap between courses and pieces. Fortunately, that wasn't the case at Katsu. I digress, I also appreciated that the chefs catered to our needs and started to describe the course more in Japanese when they realized I understood Japanese. The only complaint I have is that they don't allow you to order additional pieces at the end of the meal. The restaurant actually emails you the day of your reservation and asks if you would like to add additional Yura uni tray or Hokkaido uni pieces. Be sure to check your email if you are the type to add additional pieces. Also plan ahead and make reservations as soon as Katsu releases them because there are only 8 seats and they fill up quickly!

This place is a bit of a love-hate relationship for me, and it's hard to explain. Things started off pretty smoothly. Based on reviews, I was excited to see that they offer both good sushi and ramen--and that part is true. The sushi is really good and solid overall: fresh fish, flavorful roll combinations, and well-balanced rice/ingredient ratios. The ramen is decent. The broth is flavorful, though the chashu doesn't quite compare to what you'd get at a dedicated ramen shop. Still, it's nice to have ramen as an option, especially when dining with a group. That said, service took longer than expected, especially considering ramen is usually quick to prepare. To their credit, they noticed the delay and offered us complimentary edamame, which we appreciated. About 45 minutes in, the restaurant started filling up fast. We were almost finished but decided to order sweet shrimp nigiri, something we always try when it's available. Unfortunately, that's where things went downhill. Once the crowd came in, it became very difficult to get the staff's attention due to the influx of both dine-in and online orders. At least three other tables around us were also missing items or had orders forgotten--just like us. We placed our nigiri order at 5:34 p.m. and didn't receive the two pieces until nearly 7:00 p.m. We didn't even realize how long we had waited until we were leaving. Ironically, once we mentioned it to an employee, the order came out in less than five minutes. The explanation given to multiple tables was that there were too many online orders and they couldn't stop them (??) To me, this felt more like a communication and prioritization issue. Dine-in customers shouldn't be waiting 45 minutes for two pieces of nigiri or a single maki roll. They did offer us 10% off the bill, but it didn't fully make up for the frustrating experience. The food itself is undeniably good, and this place has a lot of potential. However, I wouldn't gamble my time here again unless the service issues are addressed. I really hope they find a better system, because the quality of the food deserves it.
