Two large grilled juicy mackerel fillets with a scoop of rice and an unnecessary citrusy dipping sauce. The meal came with an ok Miso soup and equally ok iceberg lettuce salad with a mayo ginger dressing. Service was good and fast, with about four other tables and take out happening. My first time ordering from this spot. Ever since my go to sushi restaurant closed, I've been on the hunt for a new one close by. I just ordered something simple since I just wanted to get a feel for the place, and I ordered California rolls, gyoza and miso soup. The California rolls weren't bad but I can't say they were good either. I was hungry so I ate most of them anyway. But I was not impressed and I wouldn't order them again. The gyoza was delicious. No complaints. The miso soup was cold and inedible. I didn't bother eating it. All in all, I would not order from this place again if I'm being honest. During our city walk, we stumbled upon this wonderful restaurant and were pleasantly surprised. The dishes were beautifully presented, incredibly delicious, and served in generous portions. Every detail reflected the care and quality that went into the food. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic dining experience and thoroughly enjoyed every dish. Very good bang for your buck! This place is located in the middle of Castro Street amidst a sea of restaurants and shops. I visited for dinner on a Monday evening, and the store was almost entirely empty. The inside was minimally decorated and had plenty of booths. The employees were friendly and efficient. Sushi Arashi's menu was so expansive, with plentiful options for sushi, sashimi, udon, bentos, and more. The dishes I tried were reasonably priced. This probably won't be the highest quality fish you ever have, but it's a very good deal for the price. I tried the dinner combo, which came with miso soup and a heavily sauced salad. My two selections for the combo were the salmon lover roll and spicy tuna roll. Both rolls were solid for their price. Once again, not the most incredible sushi ever but affordable. I also ordered the salmon kama, which was heavily seasoned and came with a small bowl of rice. For its price, it was a good amount of food. We were in the area over the weekend and came to this place for dinner. We did not have much expectation - seeing 4.1 rating from Yelp + my child asking for sushi for dinner, we just decided to give this place a try. I would say their food is 3.5 star but I rounded it up to 4 star because we got some really good service that went beyond our expectation + their dinner combo has really good portion. My husband ordered Shioyaki Saba (grilled Mackerel) + chicken karage (fried chicken, Japanese style). I had the 8 pc sashimi + beef teriyaki. We ordered two orders of tekka maki rolls, 1 kids' chicken teriyaki plate, and agedashi tofu. We thought we might need to add more food but end up we were so stuff by the end of the dinner. At first I thought the dinner combo would come in a bento tray. But no, each item was served in their own plate. The grilled Mackerel is the largest portion we have ever seen in the SF Bay Area. Husband got two filets on the plate. The bigger piece was as long as his lower arm (!). The second piece was like 75% of the bigger piece. He said the portion is like 5x more than neighborhood restaurants up in SF as one of the 2 items in a dinner combo/bento box combo. The chicken karage was like 10 pc in the bowl. He had to share with the kids. My beef teriyaki was like 2 thinly sliced steak. It's a very generous portion - except the rice. The rice is 1 scope of rice (think of Hawaiian BBQ scopes of rice). For those who watch out their rice intake/blood sugar, it's nice to keep it moderate. Oh, and the 8 pc of sashimi - they are on the thicker side - each bite is very satisfying. Oh, and the generous portion extended to the kid's chicken teriyaki plate. Basically it's the same entree plate as the grown up dinner combo, but minus the 2nd item, the soup, the salad, and probably 25% less protein (comparing to my beef teriyaki). But it's still a very generous portion for a child. From our experience, I would say skip their agadashi tofu. We ordered one and honestly it was disappointed. Their fried chicken was pretty good but the fried tofu, frankly, did not deliver. The coating was a bit off. The crunch from crushed almond (?) just did not work for me. Service, I was shocked by the attentive service. Frankly, I don't expect much in a neighborhood casual restaurant. As long as the staffs are polite, get our order right, serve us food, we would be very happy about it. But they went beyond our expectation. The sushi chef gave us the wrong roll (gave us salmon roll instead of tuna roll). The server immediately fixed it for us when I pointed it out. But my biggest surprise was the second incident - my son dropped one of his chopstick on the floor. As he picked up on the floor and before we raised our hand to ask for a new pair of chopstick, another server brought us a pair already (!) This is not a place that you would make a special trip. But I definitely think this is a lovely spot-on neighborhood gem for those who live near MV downtown. I see myself coming to this place on a weekly basis if I were still living in MV. tl;dr The first time I came here, I had a good experience with the lunch bento. The second time, not so much. Maybe there's some work to be done on fish freshness and consistency. The first time I came, I enjoyed my sashimi that came with my 2 piece bento. The lunch bento comes with miso soup, a side salad, and 2 or 3 options based on your choice. The second time, I ordered the same lunch bento and got sashimi again but swapped the cooked salmon for a katsu. The second time, the tuna specifically was dry and mushy, almost not fun to eat. My husband's meal also had sashimi and was dissapointing in quality. The price for the lunch bento is decent, which is why I took him here after my first visit, but we were unfortunately left disappointed. read more

If you are craving hot vegetable udon, look no further than Sushi Arashi. For 10.95, I got 2 full meals out of this huge vat of vegetable udon so quite a deal for a place on Castro! Service was also so friendly and very efficient, although the udon took a bit longer than the sushi. That being said, I was so happy to have found a vegetable udon that I didn't double check with the waiter if it was purely vegetarian or if it had fish broth, so if you're particular about that, definitely ask in advance! We also tried the fried ice cream that was one of the specials that week. The matcha ice cream could've used more matcha flavoring, but the tempura ice cream was so delicious that we ate the whole thing. I had been to Arashi many times with friends and family (for both lunches and dinners) after my last review. Even though they could get busy sometimes, we never had to wait for a table. We had tried their various items on the menu. Bentos, sashimi, sushi rolls were always fresh with consistent quality, and they're very affordable. My husband and I were in the area recently and decided to have a quick lunch there. We seated outside since we had our dog with us. Service was prompt and our water was refilled. I of course I found this place on yelp before I decided to go. Most of the reviews were really good so I gave it a try. I ordered a miso soup, salmon & hamachi nigiri, a tuna hand roll with avocado. I wanted the tuna in the hand roll to be spicy and they ended up bringing me some spicy sauce not making the tuna itself spicy so that was disappointing. Then I ordered a crunch topped shrimp tempura roll. Nothing was overly special or exciting. After my food was brought out no one checked on me to make sure everything was ok or if I wanted to order anything else. At that point I just asked for the check and walked out. This is such an underrated sushi spot. The fish is fresh, and the portions are nice. The presentation is also on point. They have a secret menu and the sushi roll is smoked in a wooden box. It's only $25 but they used so many ingredients in that roll plus the presentation. It's worth it. I'll name a few ingredients crispy salmon skin, raw fish, good amount of avocado, and crispy garlic (I love it). That all I remember but there's more and the they tasted sooo good together plus the smoke gives it some smokiness. One of my favorite sushi roll. For $55 you can get the omakase box. For the price, it seemed like a solid value and the service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Unfortunately, the food didn't meet expectations. As someone who eats sushi regularly, the fish did not taste as fresh as I'd hoped, and the cuts were inconsistent in both size and quality. The rice was the biggest letdown -- some pieces had too much, others too little, and the texture was hard and lacking seasoning or flavor. It's a pretty casual ambiance in downtown Mountain View. I love going here for affordable, fresh sushi when I'm in Downtown Castro area! I was here the other day, catching up with a friend and we both ordered a roll and miso soup each. The servers here are nice, they're more on the quiet side but very sweet haha. What we got: Miso Soup - 8/10 - Standard miso soup, very good when it's cold! Super California Roll - 9/10 - Basically the 49ers roll anywhere else, their actual 49ers here is with tuna and sauce I think! But I really love the basic salmon, lemon, and California base roll so I had to go with this one. Very fresh and yummy! Dragon Roll - 8/10 - Not bad! Wow amazing sashimi with thick cut and very fresh. Got the sashimi deluxe which was worth it - really enjoyed what I think was the snapper. The baby octopus karaage was more on the crunchy side - not particularly my favorite as I got some rubbery pieces. Hama Saba roll was delicious because I love both hamachi and Saba. The sexy lady roll with the fresh tuna was delicious as well. They do note that the salad that comes with the sashimi combo has dressing with peanut butter. There was no wait when we arrived and staff greeted us right away and very friendly. Restaurant was clean and the ambience was cozy. They have booths along one side of the restaurant which was very comfortable. The food was terrific. We had the spicy tuna which was fresh, tasty and had the right amount of spice. 1st time we came here, we had the bentos and everything tasted great. The salmon, tempura and chicken katsu were cooked perfectly and the jalapeño bomb was the bomb! 2nd time we had the spicy tuna rolls again, the jalapeño bomb again, tempura alacarte, and chicken katsu plate. Came here for a team lunch and was seated immediately. Actually pretty nice because it was 7 of us and we were on a time crunch plus it is conveniently located in downtown Mountain View. There's plenty of street parking and parking structures around too. They have lunch specials so make sure to check that out. I opted for the lunch bento box with salmon and teriyaki chicken with a side of salad, rice, and a roll. This is definitely a great deal for what you get but the quality was just okay. The teriyaki chicken was doused in teriyaki sauce (maybe try asking for sauce on side). The salmon was a bit overcooked for my liking, on the drier end and had a stronger fishy taste. I ordered from this spot on DoorDash and I really wanted to love it but just couldn't get past the general lack of flavor or odd flavors from most items. I'll say the sashimi combo was good and the sashimi tasted pretty fresh so we were off to a strong start! I moved to the Alaska Roll and salmon avocado roll and they were both just extremely bland. The Alaska roll really didn't taste like anything but cream cheese and rice which was pretty disappointing because it seems like people really enjoy it. The salmon avocado roll just tasted like nothing and some of the rice on it was undercooked and hard. The tobiko had an odd overly sweet flavor to it, I'm not sure if it got mixed up with something else or if it had gone bad but it was an almost chemical taste I've never had happen to me before and I threw it away as a precaution. Finally, the uni was okay, it wasn't bad but it was another item that was lacking flavor to me. I will say this place is very cheap so if you want some budget sashimi this is your spot, outside of that I don't think I'll be back sadly. read more
