I was never originally a fan of udon and usually preferred pho or ramen, but after several visits to Udon Mugizo, I can honestly say this is the best udon place I've been to. I really like the atmosphere here. It's comfortable, relaxed, and feels like a great place for a date or a casual meal. The tonkotsu udon is one of my favorites, but I'm especially a fan of the salmon spinach cream sauce udon and the mentai cream sauce udon. The flavors are really well balanced -- not overly salty, but never bland either. The portions are also generous, and I always leave feeling full and satisfied. For someone who never considered themselves an udon fan, the fact that I've already been here three times probably says a lot. Definitely a local favorite and a place I'll keep coming back to. read more

Came back again and there is a minor wait of 10 mins. The service is awesome and the tables are cleaned. For the food: - Chicken Karaage isn't as good as before - it's not as hot (temperature-wise) and the pieces are smaller - The Nabeyaki udon is still good and served piping hot. - The salmon spinach cream sauce udon is so-so. My friend doesn't seem impressed with it. Be aware they're charging $0.5 for tempura sauce when it used to be free before, even for the dish that comes with tempera. I haven't seen any places charge for tempura dipping sauce like this. It's not like we keep asking for multiple refills of the sauce (we only asked for one). Thumbs down for it. read more

I went to Udon Mugizo with my family and we had a good time. I had a big table, but got help checking in by staff to join the waitlist. It was about 15-20 min before we were seated, and inside has ample space with wooden tables and traditional decor. We placed our order and the food came out soon after. I really enjoyed my curry udon, it was the right consistency and had good balance of flavor. The katsu was tender without being greasy. This topped my expectations and then exceeded. Allow me to explain. I've always wanted to visit an Udon Mugizo. It just happened to be today that we got to go visit one and I was pleasantly surprised. From the quality and speed of the food to the prompt service, my visit exceeded my expectations. Firstly, their Signature Udon, it's not like anything I've ever experienced and it was great! That creaminess, that umami-ness, that well balanced saltiness, it was very good and I'd definitely get it again. My wife got the Tonkatsu Udon and that in itself was very good. It wasn't just replacing ramen with udon noodles, it was more to enhance and make it all work. We ordered a kids udon and the quality of the fried corn and multiple items prepared seemed thoughtful. We also ordered the Udon Meshi, which was good, but the other items shined. Service was great. Granted, we were the first in the door, but we were greeted by multiple wait staff and water level was always kept above half. The restaurant itself has great ambiance. If you like larger portions, definitely go for the large. They mentioned it's 50% larger than their regular size, and generally only a few more dollars for each dish. The two of us who had the Nebeyaki Udon really enjoyed it. My only wish is that they would put the tempura shrimp on the side so that it doesn't get too soggy. It was our first time at the Udon Mugizo, so the server offered to walk us through the menu. He explained the differences between dishes and their sizes. He even offered to show us images on his hand held ordering device since we were debating over what dishes to get. We were celebrating a birthday and the birthday celebrant received a free dessert. Kind, patient and helpful. Excellent customer service. The Order: Crispy Onigiri Bites -Chopped up pieces of well done pork Chashu with some delicious sauce and fresh green onion, all on top of crispy rice. A great starter. Tonkatsu Udon Deluxe (no spice) -The broth was well balanced. Full of flavor and not too salty. The shrimp tempura wonderful, even though it was slightly submerged so it was as crispy as I hoped. The deluxe comes with a cube of braised pork belly, and it was so tender and sweet. I could eat an entire plate of it! The noodles were perfect, soft and flavorful. The egg was sweet, but I wish I would have eaten it sooner, as I prefer the egg to be a creamier. I definitely recommend the Deluxe. Vegetable Tempura & Broccoli Tempura -A beautiful and tasty assortment of pieces. The corn was a stand out since it was off the Cobb, being held together by the tempura batter. It was delicious, with a batter that was not overly thick. Both were nice side dishes during our dinner. Kurogoma Mochi Ice Cream -The mochi may tend to stick to the paper lining, and picking them up with your fingers can be slightly sticky. The nutty flavor from the black sesame ice cream is fantastic. The pairing with the sweet chewy mochi exterior is a wonderful pairing. Matcha (Green Tea) Ice Cream -Delicious and creamy. Not overly sweet. A nice subtle creamy flavor. A great way to end the meal. The food and the service truly make this place stand out. Everything had a well balanced flavor, with the components to each dish (appetizer/side dish, soup, dessert) having a wonderful flavor journey through each bite, as the various ingredients take turns on center stage as you work your way through each dish. The outdoor seating was really nice at first, but some stuff from the trees kept falling into my water and even my udon, so I ended up moving inside. I always get the tonkotsu deluxe with spice and it never disappoints. The noodles are great and the broth is rich and flavorful. Came here on a Tuesday at 12:30pm; there were a few people standing ahead of me waiting. We were offered a table outside. In the interest of time, we accepted, even though it was a bit cold outside. Unfortunately, the standing patio heater wasn't working that was next to our table. Not a huge deal, but would've been nice while we waited for our udon. Had the Nabeyaki Udon and my friend had the Tonkotsu Udon. Nabeyaki Udon came with a clear broth, poached egg instead of boiled egg, fish cake, mushrooms, chicken pieces and two pieces of shrimp tempura. Nabeyaki broth is sweeter, thin, more clear compared to the creamy, milky, less sweet Tonkotsu broth. Mixing in the poached egg reminds me of egg drop soup but with a more complex flavor. The poached egg definitely added umami to the broth. Good sized tempura shrimp covered with crispy airy batter vs panko or thick breading. The Tonkotsu Udon had the creamy rich broth. Just the broth alone was already yummy. This is my go to item at Mugizo. Thick noodles, a whole boiled egg, and slices of chashu pork. They also give a side of the seasoning powder which I think is ground bonito. For appetizer, we had the corn fritter which is looks like a cup of sweet corn kernels mixed with light tempura batter then fried. I wish this is served in a thin sheets vs in big clumps. Went here for a second time and was not disappointed. The portions are large and the broth is very flavorful. I like this place because the tables are not too crowded and you can have a nice conversation. The ambience is modern and clean. Service is fast and friendly. Parking can be a little tricky because each time we've gone the streets have been closed off, but if you're savvy, you can find parking space within a block or so and it's free. We keep meaning to walk around after we eat, but never seem to have time. There's lots of great places around here and I think going for dinner would be extremely fun since you can walk around after and enjoy the shopping. Highly recommend this place! read more

I tried to Tonkatsu Udon, Katsu Curry Udon, and the Salmon Spinach Udon. All splendid choices and had great flavor. I will say the udon noodles are on the softer side as I prefer a more al dente noodle. The Katsu Curry is my favorite and definitely my go to. The curry has an intense flavor and all the veggies are so tender. There is definitely something for everyone whether you like soup, curry, cream sauce or rice. The food here is so good! I had the salmon cream udon last time but it was so memorable I got it again. I didn't know it was smoked salmon at first but it goes together really well. The cream makes it feel so luxurious. I also had some hot hojicha, which was great in the cold weather. The location is pretty busy, but we came on a Thursday night so the wait wasn't long. They have a waitlist on yelp which helps. There's outside seating with those tall flame things, though still too cold in December for us, so we were at a counter seating, where the table was surprisingly wide, so people sitting opposite were a bit far, but I won't complain about more space for the food! Price is reasonable, but the large didn't feel that much larger than regular size. I was also a bit confused about the menu because there's a cold udon section and warm udon section... Arrived at 3pm and this place still opens, which is convenient. The place was beamed with low warm yellow lights, reminding me of a romantic dating ambiance. It seemed a bit short staffed, which wasn't much a problem for 2 tables including us initially. In a moment's time, more customers came and half the room was filled and it was still running on one staff member taking orders up front and one bus boy pushing a cart with food, there seemed to start a backlog. I like that their menu has a variety of udon: soup, dry and with a variety of sauces. I picked the cream sauce of salmon and spinach because it's healthy and not quite popular in other udon places. The food came quickly, which is good, and it tasted fine. To my surprise, the salmon slices were smoked and not fully cooked, which brings a nice finish when they stay in the hot sauce longer. I do question that it didn't quite seem like it's spinach in the sauce, but all is good. We waited awhile to put in our order due to the short staff situation, but I could see that the waiter was still helping the undecided new customers with her choices patiently. Out waitress made sure to go over the menu in detail, making sure we knew the favorites, answered any questions, and kept on checking in on us making sure everything was great. In terms of the food, my oh my. I have had the Katsu Curry Udon twice now and not only is it filling, it is absolutely delicious. My family and I come here pretty often since we love the fresh udon. Everything tastes homemade and comforting. Here's what I've tried so far: Tonkatsu Udon (5/5) The broth is flavorful with nice toppings like spinach, egg, shrimp tempura (crispy and my favorite), and bits of tempura. This time, we ordered the beef sukiyaki nabeyaki udon and the niku udon. Both orders were similar enough that I'll lump them together. The noodles are...just okay. This place is consistently good! While it's a little pricey, it's actually fair for The Peninsula and especially on Castro street. This place is always so efficient with managing their waitlist and taking orders quickly, so as long as you put yourself on the waitlist before expecting to eat, you should be seated and served pretty swiftly. The udon itself is really delicious! I've tried both the niku udon which was perfectly sweet/salty with generous portions of beef as well as the curry udon which was rich and beyond flavorful. In all of the udons I've tried, the noodles themselves are the perfect bouncy texture and always served at the perfect temperature. The vibe is nice whether you eat inside (it looks semi modern and lightly industrial) or dine outside. The latter is perfect for days when the weather is good, as Castro street is fully pedestrianized and creates a warm, wholesome, and vibrant atmosphere to enjoy dinner. If things were a little cheaper I'd be coming here every week, but instead I will happily be stopping by to meet up with friends or for a tasty date night. read more
