I love ther food n service. I like to site outdoor but inside has plenty of windows too.

Had dinner with my wife, daughter and son in law last night and the food and service were exceptional. We left a very generous tip for the staff. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars was the ambiance which was spoiled by very loud and not very listenable background music. The music selection and sound quality was awful and I say this as a professional musician. When we go out to an upscale restaurant like the Gladstone tavern we want to be able to have a conversation without having to talk over the music and repeat ourselves.. read more

Went there with friends to catch up. Fortunately they sat us in the back garden so it wasn't so loud as it was inside with the I've band. The bad news of the garden is that the table & chairs were metal and since we were not near one of the heaters on this cold night, we were freezing before the evening was over. If they at had cushions it would have been a lot more pleasant. The food was awesome which, of course, is very important. The wait staff were friendly, knowledgeable & attentive. This was a impromptu stop on way home from the shore. We sat on the tavern side because we were in beach clothes. The atmosphere was rich and oaky. The service was good. We ordered small plates and salads. Everything was beautifully plated and fresh! Excellently presented and very pleasing to the palate. Been a loyal customer for the past 15+ years. Was sure to do take-out twice a month when covid hit and they were not allowed to do indoor seating. Just tried to pick up my takeout order tonight and waited at least 35 minutes, consistently being told by the manager it would be "just a few more minutes". When pressed, he became very confrontational and told me "we're very busy". Yeah. You're a restaurant; you took nreservations; you took my order this afternoon. Seems like you should have been prepared. Was then told it would be at least another 25 minutes. Terrible service. Terrible attitude. Another customer left with his takeout saying he waited half an hour and was also unhappy. read more

This is one of a few favorites my husband and I have recently gotten excited about in our general area. We've come to celebrate special occasions and for a semi casual, but sweet date night. I'm always pleased with what I order. I side more with veg & fish based meals, the husband enjoys the meat focused side of the menu. We're both pleased. The bar offers perfect cocktails too. The only criticism I'll mention is that our courses came a bit too fast! So, I'd recommend letting the waiter know you'd like to take your time if you're there to relax and enjoy read more

This is my go-to place when I am in the area...Always an excellent selection of classic reinterpreted items and fun fusion combos. all of my 5 meals there were well executed- Hot fresh, tasty and nicely presented. Even the chicken schnitzel...sound boring right?- Nope they nail it. It's dressed with a yummy crunchy arugula salad on a small pool of veal demi....some fried lemon would make it more perfect but thats my preferrence. It's a three star due to the fact I only go for drinks and appetizers. I have to say your appetizers are absolutely bizzare. Cold couscous mess with veggies, buffalo wing sauce poured over microwaved cauliflauer, flat bread with artichokes (where is the pepperoni and normal stuff?) And on and on. If you just offered the tried and true fried calamari, buffalo wings, french fries, real nachos (not the fake and tiny ones you serve) you would find your customers had fun. No fun eating weird cauliflauer with a jar of buffalo wings sauce dumped on it. Just weird. I'll be back when I see normal appies on your online menu. read more

A gentleman took me here for lunch. Quaint spot. They have a great herb garden along side of their building. My friend had the chopped chicken cobb salad and he said it was ok. Nothing too special. I had the salmon salad. Funny, the waiter asked me how I wanted the salmon cooked. He said they cook it to medium, I asked for it to be more on the rare side. It came out well done! The salad on the side was tasteless. After I asked for more dressing, suddenly the salad came to life so in the end, everything on my plate tasted good. Even the cooked well done salmon. The place is very busy on a Sunday so reservations are highly recommended. I would go back! read more

Negative - we had a little table off of the bar area, which was fun, but the only problem is that these tables were literally never bussed. We had to clear not only our own dishes and glasses, but when we sat we had to clear the stuff from the folks before us and bring everything to the bar. Swung by here a few weeks ago, and boy, let me say that it is nothing like it used to be. I guess the owners must have let a lot of the very notable, knowledgeable, and friendly staff/management go (Jasmine, Robby, Nadya, Dane, Alex, etc.). Living in the area this was my GO TO place because the servers and bartenders felt like family, and sidling up to a barstool truly felt like home. The restaurant is now filled with servers who do not have knowledge of the dishes or drinks. The food was still tasty, however! I'm assuming they kept on a majority of the kitchen staff. The drinks on the other hand... severely overpriced and not made well. When I stopped in I asked my server who was bartending and they told me that the owner's wife (I believe her name was Jennifer) was making the drinks. Knowing that I wouldn't be receiving one of Robby's famous cocktails, I settled for a beer. Although I cannot remember the name of the beer, I remember it being over 8% ABV and the drink came out to me in a pint glass. I know a thing or two about alcohol, and I KNOW that beers over 8% should come out in snifters, not pint glasses. That is a one lane road to customer overconsumption. Thinking it was just a mistake, I ordered another beverage and it AGAIN came out to me in a pint glass. Thankfully, I live near by and didn't have to drive far, because those overpours could seriously get both the customers and owners in trouble if anything should ever happen. Considering this to be a fine dining restaurant, you'd think that the owners wife would know a thing or two about overpouring. Well.. on the other hand, maybe not. I believe their other restaurant in Maplewood severely went under, and a majority of the negative reviews blamed poor management. Oh well. I just hope the same thing doesn't happen to one of this areas most beloved restaurants. read more

great lunch spot. they had a vegan burger on the menu, which was definitely one of the better vegan burgers that i have had (and i am not a vegan). the fries that came with it were also delish and I am stuffed from my lunch. atmosphere was nice - was able to work quietly while enjoying my meal. We came here with our real estate agent to celebrate closing on our house, and it was a lovely experience. As many others noted, Gigi was fantastic. Since we were there fairly early into lunch service, there weren't too many tables filled so our service was very prompt. Considering the size of the dining room plus the outside area, I can imagine it getting very busy during peak meal times. To be honest, I can't remember exactly what each of us ordered - it was such a hectic day! I know I ordered a salad with grilled shrimp that was absolutely delicious. The Man had the Tavern burger, which he wolfed down with his usual grace. Our RE agent also had a salad, but I honestly have no idea which one. Gigi made sure to check in on us regularly and even gave us a list of upcoming events. By the time we finished our meals, we knew we'd be back again. I don't know how crowded it is during dinner, but we really enjoyed our weekday lunch. Nice tavern with typical tavern food. Unfortunately I tried the fish tacos which were a big disappointment. In addition, they gave me a ton of fries which at first tasked good, but really I should have asked or the waiter should have offered a side salad or some greens. Stay away from the fish taco. What a great place! Recently came here with my husband and our dog, Lucky (they are dog friendly...which instantly made me love them!). When we first drove up we noticed how cute it was from the outside. They had seating on he patio and on the front lawn and of course inside. We sat on a table on the front lawn. The service was exceptional. They even brought my dog water while we ate. We had spicy guacamole to start. It was very good. It was served in the avocado shell with chips on the side. For my entree I had the scallops and my husband had the hanger steak frites. Both meals were delicious! They had a band that night playing inside but since we had the dog we couldn't go. Party of 6 for a birthday recently. Average crowd. Service was very slow. 10min before our order was taken Appetizers served 40 min later, Main course was served 60 min later. Steaks were very tough. One of us got food poisoning, I got a touch of it too (when testing that meal's doggy bag). I would not go back even if given a $50 gift card. Prices do not equate to what you get. Went here for lunch with friends after the Mansion in May Tour. There were only 2 other tables occupied when we came in, but it took more than 25 minutes to place an order. It took another 10 until we were told they didn't have half of the dishes we ordered. I had a pulled pork sandwich, which was very tasteless and dry. As if over heated in a microwave. I also had tortilla chips and guacamole which was proportionately small. Barely enough to share. Very, very over priced for what we had. 4 people at lunch came to $127. A little high for what we had. Next time, I think I'll go to the Bernards Inn if I plan on spending that kind of money on a lunch for four. read more

Three meals over three years. Each lackluster in their own way. It's expensive, service is choppy and the bar tending finesse leaves much to be desired. May I suggest a copy of Gaz Regan's Mindful Bartending? We arrived last night after reading a glowing review in Edible Jersey, unfortunately what is printed on the page in their review and what was experienced certainly felt like two ships passing in the night, one with passengers enjoying their perceived, robust food and the other, our ship, incongruously void of personality and charm. We were seated in the "living" room area of the restaurant and presented menus by Jose' who introduced himself to us in an apologetic manner. Harried and obviously stressed out by a table of nine next to the windows, he was covering this room pretty much by himself. Sure there were back waiters who ferried the food out, but he was essentially alone. We sat for about 10 minutes without water or even bread( more about this later) and called to a bus-boy to find our waiter. He took our drink orders. Bonny Doon Rose' was about 9 dollars per glass (a bottle in the store is about 10, so the prices are unreasonably high for the quality of the wine. I ordered a Daiquiri cocktail. Usually a Daiquiri has rum in it. This one was bitter, sour and had no evidence of rum or liquor of any sort. I sent it back and ordered a Hennipin Beer- our waiter set it down on the table without pouring it. Not good form. At least pour it half way. We continued to wait to give our order. Another 10 minutes. Tables around us seemed to be in a similar situation. Waiting, waiting. The music seemed to be a melange of Blackploitation movie music (Theme from Shaft, strangely out of place in bucolic, staid-Gladstone) moving into a series of 60's and 70's music. Finally bread was placed on the table. As a chef, I believe if you provide good bread when a customer sits down, all can be good. This hockey puck portion of bread was under-proofed, scattered with bits of salt and raw (cold) in the middle. Decent olive oil was on the table, butter came in a small ramekin when requested. (nice touch) Salads arrived. Mine was the wedge of Iceberg with "slab" bacon and Maytag Blue-Cheese dressing. If this dressing was made in fact from Maytag Blue Cheese I failed to taste any of the signature spark and sour of the cheese. It may have been from a jar with bits of cheese mixed in. The bacon was cooked into hardened lifelessness and the tomatoes needed more ripening. Message to kitchen, plum tomatoes work better until the Jersey Tomatoes are ripe. Spring Salads were fine yet lacked character. Tables around us that came in after us got served first. Timing is a major issue with some waiters walking in circles. A floor manager (tall guy with shaved head) seemed to talk down to people in his charge. Directing them rather than helping in the day to day work of a restaurant. I don't think I saw him ask any of the people dining if they enjoyed their food? My dry rubbed brisket was just that. Dry. Flavorless. The plated sauce tasted of bitter coffee. Do they make their own stocks and sauces? Doubtful, but for the price charged this should be a scratch house. (everything from scratch). I looked ruefully at my dish of cold frizzled onions and dry brisket and.. well didn't eat much. My dinner companions had no major complaints with their entrees, my wife's lamb lacked seasoning (but she likes mostly unseasoned food) and mom-in-law just gets everything cooked into oblivion- this was easy for the kitchen with a heavy hand at overcooking. Desserts were forgettable. Coffee was "nothing to write home about" the last thing on your palate is the coffee. May I suggest Black River Roasting? I know they would deliver to you because they used to deliver to the (failed) "New" Gladstone Market next door. Dinner for three almost 200 dollars for pretty bland, basic faire without any memorable dishes. I'd like to say if you enjoy country club style cooking or camp cooking, you'll be very pleased with the Gladstone Tavern. read more

The atmosphere here is great. We sat inside because it was too hot outside but the patio looks very nice. There was a live band playing and the music was a little too loud to hear our conversation but it was fun anyway. The menu has an awesome variety of options but the quality of the food was just average. I would not recommend the shrimp flatbread or the fried cheesecake but maybe we just ordered the wrong things. Clams were very average. The bar was crowded but had a fun vibe. I would go back and sit at the bar for an app and go somewhere else for dinner next time but overall our experience was good. First I should mention that Far Hills is a wonderful place and filled with lots to do .. but when my parents moved us out here I thought I would DIE.. literally die! The Gladstone Tavern is just one of the many great places out here that make it worth the drive. Right now I am craving their tender juicy fillet glazed with blue cheese and paired with garlic mashed potatoes .. if only you didn't make my cholesterol jump. The place is modern, clean and great for the neighborhood. I love that the new owners kept the GIANT horse out front (and while it is weird to see a cast iron horse dressed up for Halloween .. it gives the place character) The service is great, the wine selection while not extensive does boast some great choices, and I absolutely LOVE the steak with blue cheese. So much so that the husband to be and I have ordered it as take out .. and it is NOT a cheap meal. But then again nothing in Gladstone/Far Hills is cheap. Overall I say leave the kids at home and come enjoy the day in Far Hills; stroll down Main street and end the day at the Tavern. Indulge in the fillet , savor the red wine and then walk over to the exotic car shop around the corner for dessert. I promise it is worth the drive. FYI .. the Far Hills train station is a half block away (about 60 minutes from NYC by train), by car you can make it here in 45 minutes. read more

The infamous ( see other reviews) crab tots and the the teeny tiny little pizza must be a joke. The entrees we had were fine but skimpy especially for the price. I had been to the Gladstone Tavern once before and had a beer at the bar. Nice decor, friendly service. My wife and I came here for dinner this past Tuesday, and had quite a different experience. While the service was excellent, the food went from bad to worse. We started with some stale bread, quickly moving on to greasy Calamari, then finishing with a dry portion of Halibut on top of a rock hard piece of pancetta, all perched on an unidentifiable and tasteless fried object. This wonderful restaurant has become the go-to eatery for me and my husband. We discovered it by accident several years ago when driving through the area and have been back several times since. Today, we took our "adopted parents" here to celebrate a birthday and we were not disappointed. From the table to the service to the food, everything was terrific. Our corner booth was perfect for conversing; Neil, our waiter, was helpful and attentive without being intrusive, and the food was delicious. Breakfast skillets served in small cast iron skillets were a delicious combo of eggs, potatoes, peppers, and bacon. The burger was cooked just right, and my husband's French toast was flavorful and not soggy, as too often happens. We plan to be back for Thanksgiving dinner--something to look forward to! read more

Thursday at 7 pm, with reservation, put us in center of very noisy room. So disappointed. We were celebrating a 30th birthday and could barely converse. If there's no open table you deal with it as we did. As to food, drink and service, apps shared delicious, drink and brews enjoyed, little conversation about mains. Then again, with the volume our conversation was minimal. Half lobster on Cobb salad had little flavor but the rest of the ingredients were wonderful. Service was attentive, unobtrusive and courteous. Would we return? Not as a group larger than 2 since we could not enjoy our family gathering during this dinner because of volume. read more

We have always come here and had a great meal. I'm not sure what happened last night. It took an hour and 50 minutes to get our entree. I ordered a shrimp special and it tasted like it had been sitting and warmed up in the microwave. The shrimp were like hard rubber and the pasta was cold in some areas and warm in others. I ate it only because I was starving. After leaving I got so sick and I'm still suffering this morning. The drinks and appetizers were good. We always liked coming here but unfortunately I think I'm traumatized after getting so sick. I think something must've happen with our order. They asked us if we were ready to order an entree after we had already ordered an hour and 1/2 before that. I'm not sure what happened with our meal but maybe it was just thrown together last minute. Delicious as always. Gladstone Tavern continues to deliver. Their dishes are always new/seasonal, beautifully presented and most importantly delicious. Oysters are a must because the accoutrement (with pickles in it) is absolutely amazing. Tonight we had the oysters (as usual) and they didn't disappoint. We paired our meal with their peach cocktail which was to die for - and a perfect drink to close out the summer season. I had the lamb for my main course and my friend had the swordfish. WOW. It was spectacular. The mint chimichurri on the lamb was exactly what lamb needs. I don't even know what to say about the potato croquette that accompanied it - a perfect mix. I had a taste of my friend's swordfish with glass noodles and it had excellent flavor and is definitely a dish I hope they have again so I can have it as my main dish. We both finished with the banana ice cream sandwiches for dessert. The perfect end to a great meal! read more

We've had the Gladstone Tavern on our "list" for a very long time of places to try, and I'm glad we finally went! I agree with some of the other reviewers about the wine list. While the beer list is pretty great for a nicer restaurant, I would have certainly liked to see more options for wine. As a self-professed cheese lover, any time a cheese plate is offered, I have to test it out. We had the Wisconsin Artisan Cheese plate as an appetizer, and it was a great portion. Not only did it come with three decent sized cuts of cheese, it also had plenty of grapes and apple slices. Major credit also for supplying enough baguettes to go along with the cheese! As an entree, I had the hanger steak in a cabernet sauce. It was pretty good, not cooked specifically to my liking, but a decent steak nonetheless. The main event of The Gladstone Tavern for me was dessert. I'm usually less than impressed with the dessert selections at restaurants these days. How many different versions of creme brulee and chocolate molten cake can a girl try? The variety here was fantastic and there was something for everyone. I ended up with the Peanut Butter Sandwich, and I was not sorry! We sat in the dining room, and I was having a hard time figuring out the usual dress code. We were in work clothes, as were a lot of other guests, but some were in jean shorts or jeans. I would say for the dining room, err on the side of business casual.
